Monday, February 15. 2010How to get a promotion in just three steps
Part Three of what I learned in Dr. John Maxwell's "Leadership in Challenging Times" seminar:
Dr. Maxwell gives three foolproof pieces of advice for getting ahead in your career. Warning: Will contain hard work. 1. Do a bit more than the average person Dr. Maxwell advocates getting to work early, having a 30 minute lunch and staying a bit late. "I'm amazed at how many people are in love with the average," he says. Average is what you do not want to be. Jeffrey Fox, another author, actually has an equation for this. He says to come in 45 minutes early to do prep work and leave 15 minutes late to finish up. Not only does this create a good impression, doing prep and cleaning up actually prepares you for a productive work day. Industriousness, coupled with strategic thinking, makes for an excellent employee, and excellent employees are oftentimes acknowledged. 2. Everyday, do something for your coworkers that is not expected of you "Instead of trying to compete with others, complete others." That piece of advice will probably go against every bone in your body, even the funny ones. After all, isn't everyone supposed to pale in comparison to your glowing record of good conduct? No. First of all, that's succumbing to the crab mentality. Second, you're just going to make everyone hate you. Everyone, except those with the blackest of hearts, wants the good guy to succeed. Besides, if you get promoted, you want everyone on your side. They're going to be the, forgive my quote, "wind beneath your wings." Being nice is not something you can force though. People can smell "plastic" a mile away and being known as a plastic person is worse than being known as a mean one. 3. Ask for a 10 minute appointment with the owner of the company This is a tricky one. I myself don't know if there's wisdom in doing this (lest you be accused of brown-nosing, among others) but Dr. Maxwell claims that the people who've done it have had excellent results. The meeting should be short, because your boss is busy and you don't want to take up his time. You introduce yourself, thank him or her for giving you the opportunity to work in the company, give him or her your cellphone number and tell him that if s/he needs anything business-related done, s/he can call you anytime. Then leave. Your boss may never call you to do anything, but you will certainly have left an impression. Again, I'm not sure how the third item will work in the Philippine setting, but just doing the first and second ones will help you get ahead in work. At the very least, it will make you a better person. Trackbacks

thanks for sharing mukhang kailangan ko to..
basta anak ka ng boss o kamaganak you dont have to be smart just wait for few months promoted kagad!!!
if you dont beliv me mag apply ka sa company namin para makita mo! I experienced that here in our company, I was about to be promoted as a Shift Manager and I am expecting the papers to be released in two days but to my surprised it was the brother of our VP for Operations got the position yet he was not on the shortlist of selected applicants. How's that?!
Argh. I feel for you. Nepotism and favoritism is never nice. That speaks more about your boss than about your performance. You could be the best in your field and that promotion could still go to the boss' nephew. Still, that doesn't mean that hard work doesn't work. An employee who gives quality to the company will at some point be recognized. Maybe not in his or her current company, but good work will always shine through.
korek kaya yan,
may mga kakilala ako...nag stay pa ng 2 hrs after work...tatamad naman, overtime lang ang habol para dagdag sahod... 30min b4 ctime kung dumating ...tutulog naman muna kasi kulang sa tulog at gumising ng maaga para aga dating sa trabaho... ma promote kaya tung ganitong klase Thanks for the tips.
You have shared really very good information. It is of use to everyone in the office. I am really thankful to you.
always seek to upgrade ur skills & be d 1st to assume responsibilities & challenges
Yes!do all that and you will have a lot of work.
At this time, companies are multitasking, indirectly saying do more and more work.hahahahaha! gusto tlga mkita ng mngmt yung extent ng kaya mo sa job thru multi-tasking para kpg me promotion ka na alam mo kung ano ang galaw ng trabaho in every dept
It depends on the position you are aiming for the promotion. If it's managerial or leadership level, I don't think going to work early or leaving a bit late will do much help. I've seen a few "hardworking-idiots" who practically live in the office but doesn't really accomplish much.
It is efficiency, productivity and leadership that counts. Nos. 1 & 2 seem helpful but i/m skeptical with No. 3 especially in the Phils. I think if I've done this, I will be a "SIPSIP"-type of staff as my co-employees would considered me. But maybe in some place outside Phils., I think would work.
But I think, hardwork and perseverance to the work will elevate a worker on top. I agree. As said in the article, I thought #3 would seem "sipsip" here as well. Right on about the hard work.
wow great tips, thanks for sharing!!mabuhay ka!!
I think no. 1 will not work in abroad particularly in the middle east in which every employees arrive and leave the work simultaneously otherwise you will be left by the shuttle.
good tips!
but here in arab country you will automatically promoted as long as you are SIPSIP hihihi! Korek!
all of these are good except every workplace has its own dynamics on how they promote employees. plus, having laptops and internet connections everywhere allows people to be mobile and yet effective (depends on how they use the technologies available)..
"How to get a promotion in just three steps".......ah okey..ty
"How to get a promotion in just three steps"! .....ahh okey....salamat..
One more thing...being a reliable employee, I would say, is one of the points for promotion...
Na promote kc ako last dec09, hehehehe...one of which (reliability) is the reason for my upgrade...yun ang sabi ng boss ko... I have been promoted before getting regularized and have done exactly what Dr. Maxwell advised. This is good stuff. And prayer certainly helps too.
i agree to your #1 and #2 but the #3 will ruin everything ...the best help i can share is master the ART of WAR ...
Don't work hard. Just work smart. Tapus.
Nice advice. But not applicable almost all the time.
Doing the steps above will certainly get you noticed.
But not all bosses/managers can see this. Some even become 'The Great Wall' that prevent you from growing. those advises are good, but you gotta be very careful in doing even a very small tiny winnny micriscopic MISTAKE.even you did a 100 good job and doing just 1 mistake out of that....some people can make it the other way around.
No. 1, I love the writer:-). About no. 1 and 2: it's a catchy definition how or what a person should do for himself and to others. I don’t like no. 3 and never do that: whether a Filipino or not, a professional should work for based on his objectives and achievements and not for the employer, unless you’re the Personal Assistant.
In short, kailangan mo mag yabang.
in the Philippine setting, dapat sipsip ka din kahit papano
first hand experience ko , anti social kasi ako e, ayaw ko umaattend ng parties or functions na company related...ayoko din mapalapit sa boss ko on a personal level kasi baka tawaging sipsip nga i always believed na short term lang ang sipsip kasi pag mahusay ka magwork no matter what aasenso ka i was wrong...need mo to socialize and be noticed otherwise dami aangat ahead of you Sa palagay ko 2 Mukha ng PAGIGING SIPSIP ayun sa Philippine version on my own opinion lang po.
FIRST Kausapain mo ung boss mo at pagusapan ang work related and sharing different thought for the growth of the company. (WHICH IS GOOD) BUT!!!! in the Philippines close door meeting pa lng sa Boss mo SURE Sipsip n iisipin ng co-employee mo(ANG Kitid) SECOND (ANG PINAKAAYAW KO) Kausapin ang boss mo at pagusapan ang ugali ng iba at work ethic the iba NANGYAYARI yan dito sa Middle East lalo na sa mg Arab they really like to know even the smallest details maybe upto the extent kung ano ang brand the brief mo hehehehe OPINION KO LANG PO!!! in the Philippine setting, dapat sipsip ka din kahit papano
first hand experience ko , anti social kasi ako e, ayaw ko umaattend ng parties or functions na company related...ayoko din mapalapit sa boss ko on a personal level kasi baka tawaging sipsip nga i always believed na short term lang ang sipsip kasi pag mahusay ka magwork no matter what aasenso ka i was wrong...need mo to socialize and be noticed otherwise dami aangat ahead of you Sa Phil. setting 1 tip lang ang epektibo kelangan SIPSIP ka in all forms. Kasi kung trabaho at tulong lang ang gawin mo, you will end up a janitor or at least leader ng mga janitors.
Yvette,
Not necessarily. In a perfect world, that can easily happen. But not in the real world. Not necessarily It's simple really:
1. Be good at what you do 2. Make sure people know that you're awesome. Unless you are totally exceptional, don't expect to let work do all the talking for you. We Filipinos, especially the ones working overseas, need to master the art of self-marketing. all that sacrifice just to get a promotion, a few thousand increase & tons of headache?! and in the end, the company does'nt give you what is right? the salary is barely enough to make you live a fair life?!?! therefore, doing all these things is total Bulls@x.t!!. what all of you people should do is to migrate to a better country and leave the philippines. working here is a slow suicide.
If an employee works without thinking of a promotion, he will be promoted as an employer.
I am an OFW here in Dubai and guess what!!! food prices here are cheaper compared to that of the philippines!!!the rice, chicken, pork, beef AND EVEN VEGETABLE & SUGAR FOR CHRIST SAKE!!! so my advice to all of you who are reading this, MIGRATE! MIGRATE! MIGRATE! DONT WAIT FOR YOURSELF TO TURN 50 AND END UP RETIRED IN THIS WASTELAND, REVEIVING A PENSION OF JUST 3 TO 5t!!!! THIS IS A TOTAL bULLsX@T!!!
@marty, i detect a hint of dissatisfaction during your course of working in the Philippines. TOO BAD!
"... migrate to a better country..." in your own words is total "Bulls@x.t!!. I think you are the best example of what am employee should not be. You are bitter, you left, and those that were left behind got the break, and you blame the world for it - hahaha tough luck! Ever heard of "no guts no glory" or "No retreat no surrender". Too bad for an article to show us a way to become better and a comment from a bitter person to telling us that the best way to success is to give up. In your methods and way of thinking all I can say is that I am happy working in the Philippines. I am satisfied. I probably got everything you have through hard work and determination and need not migrate to a "better country". It makes me think... in what world would you be better than me? And for those who would follow @marty, well para na ring sinabi nyo na iboboto nyo ulit si erap! thanks @yvette No way your tips will works especially today at the brunt of economic crisis period.
its a nice piece of advice theoretically. pero sa totoong buhay, either you're in a private or government office, there's no guarantee that when you follow them, you'll get promoted. Hiring pa lang nga, it's not what you know but WHO YOU KNOW. Lalo na sa promotion.
Tips to get promotion?
-product knowledge or work knowledge -use your personal power, associate it w/ -who you know power thanks for sharing. Ilang taon nkong sa position ko, it's time to get a promotion
Personally this tips will apply only for ideal setting..
But in reality like here in the Philippines where most of the companies are family owned, where 90% of these companies apply a different approach with regards to promotion. They promote people because they are relatives or they kiss their ass. But for your own career satisfaction, just do what you do best, just keep working because you love what you are doing and remember the type of output you produce represents your professionalism. But then again if you really cannot take it anymore you still have the option to transfer to another company. There certainly is no way a promotion can be guaranteed by any formula.
Not unless that formula was defined by your manager and was documented. Even the basic performance evaluation with defined performance objectives does not define a basis that you will be promoted if you did things better than the rest. A promotion is a recognition/reward of your value as perceived initially by your manager and then by the top executives. The key here that the promotion is a "reward". As such the reward is given via some decision item that only top executives would understand. This is why we tend to be angry at rewards given to people other than ourselves. We claim that we also did the same thing and sometimes even better and wonder why did the other got the promotion. It's a senior executive decision in which you have to be a senior executive to understand it. In the end, we do not have to agree with their decision we just have to commit ourselves to supporting that decision. You can be promoted anything if the company wants to.. The question is;
"Why do you work for someone for something you don't even own?" Aside from making to meet the other ends.. For the love of money i will have meals for 30 minutes and worked a little bit late? Hell, it is good for the pocket but not good for the stomach that needs food.
I will never do it unless i am paid overtime. Only the capitalist earn money while the workers are paid at the minimum for sustenance. Look at the what they did in the US, they bailed out the banks who at the first place created the financial crisis. Now, only the banks have money. The poor have no money; worst, no house because of foreclosures. The gap between the rich and the poor is kept on widening. Lust for profit is the culprit, the embodiment of the capitalist system. At the end you are still called a slave by the company. You want to be slave, go ahead. But think twice The mere fact that even if u have the guts and deserves to be promoted, yung mga SIPSIP pa rin yung mga nproPromote. Hence, the company will know who's "THE WEEKEST LINK"..Hahahaha..
HOY! If I were your boss I would NOT even promote you to a higher position because you CAN'T even SPELL the word "WEAKEST" right....
Employers dont promote dumb people The ROCK... Guess you are the "WEEKEST" Link.. as you mispelled it.. hahahaha anong weekest? weakest you mean?! patawaren mo na yung typo error....
be positive palagi either ma-promote or hindi @The Rock
Trying to prove yourself to others should be the last thing you do. Prove it to yourself that you can do things better than others and let others recognize you for it. In my opinion, if my boss is absent and critical things are referred to me even as my boss designated somebody else is a clear indication that majority of the people regard me to be better than the boss’ designate. Those who “kiss the boss’ ass” will always be known as SIPSIP. Those who truly are good will gain the respect and recognition by his peers. For people like me, being recognized by peers as the best is the cake. The promotion or any reward I receive because of that is the icing. why bother getting promoted if you can be your own boss? i say, save enough money, quit your job, and put up your own business. that way you earn the full amount of your hard work and no greedy corporation can take the lion's share. ika nga nila, walang yumayaman na empleyado.
In reality, if you want something, you have to want it badly. It does not come easy. Just work smart, not necessarily hard. Be creative, pro-active and always upgrade your knowledge. Mind you, Bosses nowadays are shrewd. Even if they know it, they won't still. If that is the case, time to go. A company that does not recognize your talent and effort is not worth it. But then again, saan ba meron pa? Hehehehe. Or offer eh mimimum wage (my gosh). After 10 years of experience abroad, apply uli ako sa Pinas, sagot naman eh over qualified, d puede. Otherwise, minimum wage. Life...
Magsipsip ka kay Mike Arroyo bibigyan ka ng Susie ng Impierno. what if you are a construction worker? or a security guard?
promotion is to an employee as winning a lotto draw is to a bettor outside luzon. you try hard to convince yourself the game is fair even though you believed it's not. trick is know your boss' weakness. if your boss is japanese, email to him a list of numbers from gro's you know. americans, they like teens and young boys. the rest are in between. if it's pinoy, forget about it. apply to where there is an american or japanese boss. anyway, employment in the philippines sucks bigtime. specially that you pay big taxes and tita glue and friends have a free hand on how to spend them. besides, reading maxwell or covey bald habits are all forms of colonial mentality. nobody knows them in freaking america, they're all thrown out their homes, can't pay mortgage eh. and the pinoys are kissing their asses on seminars to get promoted. What has been shared is valuable. Every written advise we could get should be appreciated. Negativity only breeds more negativity. So let's thank the author and apply what we believe is valuable. I have been in the Marketing Field for 18 years starting from the bottom. Lost Jobs found better ones, but never the less persevered thanks to such advices both from peers and superiors.
If we observe that there is Nepotism in the company we're in, we should not complain but rather leave and search for one that could contribute to our growth or career. The fact that they do practice that means there is very little room for us. Fortunately for my family, things went for the better and I never needed to work abroad. I hope we all enjoy the favour of our bosses, even the guys on top report to somebody else. CEOs are accountable to even more people than we think they are. God Bless! I just got promoted last January 2010 and I must say loyalty to the company and conitinous improvement on your job. It helped me to get the promotion it takes time but you'll see the ladder that your climbing up.

Hit me up with your resumes if you can. Please email it at the_blu3sman@yahoo.com Thank you! In my 14 year career as an IT professional, only once did this article proved true and that is when my boss was a foreigner (an american) in a BPO company. Other than that, the idiom "nice guys finish last" is the general rule.
I noticed that even in multinational companies, the kiss-ass always gets ahead. It pays to work hard. Of course it should come with luck and good connection.
All are said as they wish, basically it is up to every individual what he deems applicable. common good, values and learned lessons surely makes difference.
malaking tulong po ito, maraming salamat po!
3 step to get a promo...
1. Be Smart 2. Have a hot and good look. 3. Sleep with your Boss...Psssshhh. That really worked for me. I have read similar book few months after I got this job and few weeks later, my boss assigned me as the manager!
She left the company in my hand after a year and I am really happy with the outcome!!!! But it will never work unless you do it from within. So you really MUST do the 1st and 2nd very naturally and heartedly!!! It does benefit you personally. no offense to the writer, but it seems this one is not true, which I think....maybe to few descent company.because even a multinational company sip-sip is still existing....and few worth promoting persons can not be elevated (the sip-sip na wala naman alam ang napropromote), now the question is why... at nakakalungkot even that this station even reported that some of the good or best workers go out to other countries and succeded?maybe thats the things to ponder....in my experience as a 7yrs maintenance engineer I noticed why that those people with dignity and capability and intellect goes last kahit ako willing ako maging subordinate kahit mas bata pa sakin dahil magaling at may makukuha kang knowledge yung pa nangungulelat sa promotion at yung humahalik sa pwet ay yung napropromote.....why and of course im only talking to some of the people or company or group.
you will get promoted if you are more closed to the higher boss, know their weaknesess(blackmailed them)if they don´t give you the position you want and makes sure you also has enough people as your back-ups in case things didn´t work out good.
so many people get promoted to higher position because their bosses can not say no to the demand of their enemies. sana mapromote na ako
i shared this article to my friends... sana one of us mapromote
Thanks sa tips very helpful toh!
I like this article. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to promote my new movie
Miss You Like Crazy Sana panoorin niyo... Salamat po! can't wait for your new article
i don't subscribe to this:
"... having a 30 minute lunch and staying a bit late." one hour lunch break is legally mandated, why would an employee deprive himself of that and the employer to think positively of you, if you do otherwise? it would be good if both the employer and employee respect each other's time, thus the employer should respect the employee's rest period and the employee to work hard and smart during work hours. By the way, for some companies, employees who stays later than the usual working hours, is deemed not good, it may mean you are not working smartly, because you were not able to finish whats due on time. also, it means that you have no other life other than your job, that's why you prefer staying later magandang tips po ito, salamat po!
ayus sa mga tips, i'll keep these in mind!
more tips please
For work smart and reliable is best to get promotion plus having real concerns to the company counts.
