Sunday, November 8. 2009Azuthai, Metro Manila's newest Thai restaurant
If there are cuisines that Manila needs more of, it's Vietnamese and Thai.
Thankfully, Chef J Gamboa has added to the Thai roster with Azuthai, an authentic Thai restaurant located beside his and his family's immensely popular El Cirkulo, Tsukiji, and Milky Way. The interiors may look contemporary, but the cuisine comes straight from the motherland. When we tried Azuthai, my companion and I made it a point to stay away from the regular things people order like Pad Thai (I could do with some right now, actually) and Pandan Chicken, opting instead for traditional Thai dishes yet to be discovered. The Azuthai Appetizer Sampler (P375) contains two pieces each of Prawn Spring Rolls, Fish Cake and Fried Spring Rolls. Nothing like a nice selection of fried food to whet the appetite. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I know I should be describing the tastes one by one but truth be told, I ate my share before I remembered to record individual impressions. My bad. The Crispy Duck Salad (P325), or Yam Ped Grob is crispy duck jerky served with spring onions, tomatoes, and chili, flavored with tamarind dressing. The dish is a mix of flavors and textures — sweet and sour and crunchy and chewy and fresh. I liked the veggies more than the duck but that's a personal preference. After 10 years of not eating meat, I'm still trying to get used to meat that isn't steak. Instead of the usual Tom Yum Goong, we ordered Tom Ka Gai (P345), chicken soup with galanggal, kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk. It's hot and milky and packs a punch, going straight down your throat and up your sinuses. The mushrooms and tomatoes provide texture while the coconut milk tempers the soup's spiciness. The soup is great accompaniment to Massaman Gaeh (P395), Massaman Lamb Curry with shallots, potatoes, and peanuts. The lamb is tender, easily pulled apart by fork and spoon. It has a slight gamey flavor that compliments the curry, which is thick and without much spiciness. I would have preferred the dish without peanuts, as I feel they get in they way of enjoying the lamb. The curry goes well with Thai sticky rice, which isn't on the menu but can be requested. Our only concession to "the usual" was when it came to dessert, when we ordered one of my favorite after-meal treats, Tub Tim Krob (P125), sweetened water chestnuts with coconut milk. Water chestnuts covered in colored, coagulated potato flour (tastes waaay better than it sounds, believe me) swimming in chilled sweetened coconut milk. I recently learmed how to make this recipe and have to restrain myself from eating it forever. Azuthai serves authentic Thai food in the middle of contemporary Makati. The restaurant may be serene and calming, but that's only to enhance the fireworks that go on inside your mouth. Azuthai is located at 900 A. Arnaiz Ave. (Pasay Road) cor Paseo de Roxas, Makati with phone numbers +632 817 6252 and +632 813 0671. Trackbacks

Food is the topic here not politics, maybe you are not reading what is this blog for....FYI Nag sorry nga kay yvette eh.. anyway ..
Warning To All Regardless of your Sex, Religion, and Age:
Islam is the biggest cult in the history of mankind. It is Satan the Devil's main religion in disguise. The most and the worst intolerant religion and worshipers in the whole universe. Any inhabitant's life in the world regardless of age or gender is always in danger because of this terrorist religion. But soon the true God will wipe out this religion and its worshipers including the other false religions just like what He did in the first great flood but there will be a multitude of survivors. See another bombing incident in Manila and beheading of a school principal in Sulu.
I know we all have our opinions pero whatever the terrorists are doing it's all against the law of Islam. It's not about the religion, it's just about the people. It's all for self-interest that drives them to do this. So do you think ang mga iskalawag e mga muslim din??? I don't think so.. All terrorists are not just muslims, may halo ding ibang religion dyan.. Anyway, regarding the resto, will try to go there if I get back on December. Wala namang masama kung i-try di ba?! ~(^_^)~ Hi Yvette, I have to agree with you that Azuthai is really good. However, is it really new? Medyo matagal na din to ah.
You should try their fried fish with sweet and spicy sauce. You're probably right. It is the newest of CHef J's restaurants, however. GLad you liked the entry.
Oooh I love Thai food. Matry nga Azuthai. Thanks for sharing
I don't have nothing against trying International Restaurant & Cuisine-in fact whenever opportunity presents itself, time & extra budget-my family & I treat ourselves or our pallettes to different kinds of food around the world & I consider myself lucky having been able to that once in awhile-'coz I must agree International Flaire can get pretty pricey!
I would like to encourage the writer to write more on Philippine Restaurant & Filipino Cuisine--our food culture is so abundant with gastronomical varieties & mouth-watering exotic dishes that a person can dream-of-- Anjan kang "Pinakbet""Kare-Kare""Bicol Express"Bulalo"Pina-upong Manok & the list go on- & on a Pinoy Restaurant the prices are usually affordable & it won't cost a fortune! Bukod sa masarap na nakaka-busog pa! To stay afloat especially in any kind of business nowadays is to be globally competitive--Kailangan mas- agrresive tayong mga Pinoy to promote & patronize ang sariling atin muna bago ang iba- if we do this the effect with be outstanding-for the Economy,Job Creation,Local Businesses will grow & the growth will stay in our backyard. I don't dismiss the fact that International Restaurant's pay their dues to operate in our Country & it helps with the Business & Trade Industry- I just wish that AzuThai is a Filipino owned or perhaps a Franchise of a 100% Pinoy. You are right. Some of us Pinoys are out of the common necessities that we actually need. Instead of appreciating and promoting our own, we instead love to promote others. This attitude of Pinoys make ourselves a vulnerable slave of other nations work or ideals.
The Crispy Duck Salad sounds yummy. I must try this.
i don't think thai people will eat on this restaurant, the price is to expensive.
siguro mag tyatyaga na lang ako sa bikol xpress.. hehehe I'll be more proud if there will be a Filipino Restaurant in Thailand. I am currently living here in Singapore and Filipino foods is not popular.
I have tasted other dishes from different country and I conclude that our own recipe can compete with them. Filipino foods is very underrated. Other than that, our tourist spots is better than those popular tourist spots of our neighbor. Our goverment is not doing their best in promoting our culture. I agree with Bruno in almost everything that he said. Coz i had lived USA, many other nation's cuisines are overrated despite expensive and not that good to eat. W/the exception of authentic Chinese cuisines in authentic restos. Our Philippine Gov't and their 'bulok' systems is the main thing to blame.
Ala bang matino-tinong article na pwedeng maisulat na pang masa na ma-address ang mga problema nating mga pinoy? Sa ganitong mga article para bang namimili ng readers ang journalist na sumulat.
Thai food taste like it has chinese origin. Their basic ingredient is always peanut butter, coconut milk and lemon grass.
There are more Filipinos around the world than Thais and yet Filipino food did not make it as one of the favorite worldwide. Thai don't speak English yet they are good at marketing their country, their food, their culture and ugly beaches to european and americans. While Filipinos, there is just something wrong the way they think and the way they see themselves. It is just too complicated to explain but its ugly. Even the most intelligent among them kinda strange, they succeed yet they fail. Is it a ningas cogon, whatever that means. Filipinos is suppose to have everything their country has to offer and no tourist will spend longer it is just boring. Filipinos are the most boring people in the world. Their Food sucks, Thai food is one of the best. Paborito kung agahan laging tapsilog, hapunan bagoong at tuyo, bahaw na kanin. kung wala na talaga at hirap, kanin na may soy sauce at kunting mantika, magkamay na walang hugas. |
