Hi Mr. Howie Severino, it's disheartening to witness that due to lack of information and massive campaign on protecting nature, people just do as what pleases them. The role of DENR is vital to save all our natural resources, but the general public should also participate to achieve this task. Only with collective action can we attain good results in an effective and efficient way.
By the way, i really like your segments. I hope it will reach the minds and hearts of the persons involved. I also want to participate, in every way I can. Pls. let me know if you need extra help or if you have any vacancy where I can contribute my abilities. Hi Gale, One motivation for doing this work is so that young peeps like you learn to respect the environment wherever you are. You help me feel like a success! You at UPLB?
what does UPLB mean Mr. Howie?Because I'm not really good at acronyms........
UPLB - University of the Philippines Los Banos. University located in laguna. hope it helps.
Yes, I'm from UPLB, I was there in Gandingan 2009. I even approached you there.
the reason why laws were taken for granted by law breakers because the autorithies responsible to implement the law always slept on their duty...in this country where i lived, even fishing on the rivers is prohibited and those who was granted to have a fishermanīs licensed has to be lectured first what proper fishing is allowed and what fish allowed to be catch and those using illegal fishing got their licensed freezed or must pay hefty fine.
I donīt think those birdīs catcher people should lived on catching birds to survive in this world, there is plenty of ways to make foods for their hungry stomach,if they will only learn to raise animals, plants crop that can help them met their needs. Birds catcher thought killing and eating birds is fun, they donīt realized they are abusing and deteriorating birds inhabitants.DENR should do their responsibilities or better abolish that department, sayang lang ng pinapasweldo sa mga yan,mga inutil naman. Wow! Very nice.
To think that we've been through Dalton Pass more than i could remember. Your discovery of the Worcester's Buttonquail is for the record. Hi Howie!
Arnel, with their traps they can capture and eat only a few at a time. With your camera, there's a chance to save many more. ; )
Sir, bakit di ninyo binili nalang yung bird tapos dinala sa Manila?
I really do not understand why people believe that Bird's meat is a cure to certain illness. In the case you presented I would say that the DENR officer assigned in that area fails to perform his duty in protecting the environment and needs re-orientation what is his duty.
Unless the Viscayan's will start rethinking their way of life would they understand the value of the environment that they continue to abuse. Correct me if I'm wrong that parents should start teaching their kids to respect the environment. My concern is even the parents are culprit to this practices. Hope the NV officials will start implementing functional environment program to save their future. Hi Howie,
I am very proud of your concerns to the birds,it is very nice of you to post them here.I love birds......all kinds of them, although I am very disappointed about DENR.They dont save birds like these,so they become extinct........................THANKZ 4 YOUR CONCENRS!!!! The government agencies for environmental protection does not really show teeth in implementing our so many laws on environmental protection.
There are many freedom fighters, who in the long run became terrorists. I thinks those who have love for the environment who have extra funds to be exploited for terrorism campaign against abusers of our environment. Let's bomb their equipments and assassinate corrupt government officials. The end will justify the means! I urge those rich nature lovers to apportion a part of their income to hire terrorists who love to preserve our nature.!! nadismaya ako non sabihin ng gobyerno na mas dapat unahin ang tao bago ang rights ng mga animals. sana bigyan din ng importansya pra naman sa mga susunod na henerasyon.
Let the birds fly freely...I hope they won't put a price on this birds........
i hope the next DENR chief is a true blooded environmentalist, so sad to see rare birds simply trapped like that although we can't blame them for doing so due to poverty,
i also hope you make a documentary about the Philippine coconut crab, it is also a DD class species and a delicacy in Batanes island Hi
I am please to see that there still some people who like to take our local birds ,i hope the DENR will educated some local official to protect those birds...because here where i lived if im driving i have to stop if there is a blue heron ( is a kind of bird )want to cross the road or even a turtle...in fishing you are not allowed to keep if the fish doesnt make up to a size limit..even without the presence of the authority (just be honest)...SO I HOPE the law in the philippines well be effective so that the next generation have something to look up with.THANKS things happening these days are so vital to our everyday life ... teachings of our grand parents had been vanquished by ruthless poverty
cant blame these people doing this. its just so sad to see and to know that some fiipino's don't have the heart for nature ... so sad akala ko ba bawal manghuli ng mga hayop?
Thank you I found this story, Mr. Howie. I will check deeper on this. It could be a part of my scientific studies. Keep it up. Good day.
-Nic of Capiz As a nature lover, I feel awed to know 'bout new discoveries of rare species of flora and fauna in our country, validating our status as one of the most bio-diverse regions in Southeast Asia...but it is disheartening that because of man's greed, and wanton corruption in our midst, all of these new rare finds will just go the way other rare species had gone, going endangered and eventually become extinct.
Mr. Howie, sir, I have always admired your works as a journalist. I just have one simple request, or encouragement for you and your contemporaries...please come up more with stories or documentaries 'bout environmental issues. People in our country need to be informed. Who knows, this will help enllghten all of us the importance of preserving what is left of our dwindling natural resources.
Sir Howie,
I was able to watch this documentary and i had this feeling of joy and sadness. I felt happy because you and i-witness do documentaries like these. You and your show is very commendable. Honestly, the Philippine environment has not been very much focused on, especially on late night docus, and i am glad such stories are part of your i-witness culture. However, it is saddening to know that rare birds or any other wildlife for that matter, are treated like they don't have the right to live in this country, in this world. THEY ARE MORE THAN ANIMALS. But i think we also can not blame the people doing this illegal-doing, what should we expect in a poverty-stricken country? People need to survive too, so they do things that are unimaginable and unacceptable just to survive. Now, who is to blame? I know you know the answer. I also believe that what is deficient with these rare birds is not DATA but RESEARCH. And because of you and your team's concern and interest, you did an amazing discovery, a discovery that i think is a big slap to the faces of the people who should be caring or at least researching about these birds. WALA NAMAN PO KASI SILANG PAKIALAM. PARA PO KASI SA KANILA, ANG IBON, AY IBON LANG. I also commend your act of trading the birds with packs of rice. I hope you do more documentaries like these, it is my special request if you can feature the vastly unexplored, rich yet endangered old-growth forests of the Sierra Madre corridor. By the way, your discovery of the Worcester's Buttonquail was featured in the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC website. "IF ALL HUMANS IN THE PLANET DIE, THE EARTH CAN STILL SURVIVE, BUT IF ALL BIRDS DIE, I DON'T THINK PLANET EARTH IS GOING TO BE AN INVITING PLACE TO LIVE" Thanks Joemel, Anonymous and Unlad-Pinoy for the compliments. Hope this issue has deepened your love for birds and other living things.
Brian, extinction is not inevitable. Unlad, I did docu on the Northern Sierra Madre last year, Si Gob at ang mga Bugador, which might still be on youtube. Rizal, Jeanette, Bjorn FRed and Rainz -- Yes do let the DENR know your feelings. Maybe they'll listen if they hear enough voices. i hope mapreserve ang ganyan species. national treasure nattin yan.
It is nice to know that Philippines is moving in the right direction in terms of conservation of the country's environment and natural resources.
Having spent my childhood in Philippines, I have a very different memory of what the attitudes are towards animals in the 70's. If it's pretty "can we eat it?". If it's scary looking "does it bite?" and "can we kill it?". From my experience, it is the the last comment that is used as a racsist image by western foreigners against Asians (that we eat anything..including dogs...a trait displayed only by "lowly", "uncivilised" people). It is time for the people of Philippines to recognise and help protect her natural resources...Philippiens is after all the "perlas ng silangan". Hopefully, the new generation of Filipino children will take your lead and be environmental advoctes of the future. Life is not all about brands of cell phones, who are your 'freinds" in Friendster or what the new fashion are. Gadgets and fashions come and go. Once the environment goes...there is no turning back. I had written a news story on this in Wikinews:
http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Rare_endangered_Luzon_Buttonquail_photographed_alive_by_Philippines_GMA_Network_documentary&redirect=no If you like to comment there, please do so, by adding your contributions to Wikinews on the Comment or Collaboration page. You can even edit and contribute there. Cheers. Judge Florentino Floro http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User:Florentino_Floro This is truly an exciting find.
I just hope that there are still enough of these fine creatures and a friendly environment that would allow them to multiply and maintain natural balance. Sir Howie,
It seems the discoveries are not stopping. Another incredible find here: PHOTO IN THE NEWS: Hairy-Tailed Rat Is New Species http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/02/090219-hairy-rat-picture.html the photo-article was just published last Feb 18, 2009 I think it is no doubt, that our country is rich with biodiversity. By the way sir, i'll try to look for your docu about the Sierra Madre corridor, i am not sure but i think i have watched it too, the title is familiar. Thanks and more power.
I agree with what Nick said.
Howevever, it may be hard for Philippines to sustain the environment where these animals live in....Also, imagine the unknown species who may have gone extinct in the last 20 years or so because no one ever did care or did a study to find out? I remember as a child growing up in Mandaluyong, near "Ilog Pasig" (which is the boundary between Hulo Mandaluyong and JP Rizal Makati on the other side)...my cousins and I remember a lizard like animal (a bit bigger than your normal house gecko - butiki) often seen near water-lilies that floated along the river. It has a horny head, brown with bluish markings on the side. I bet nobody knows this species nor anyone cared back in the 70's. Nobody among our old friends in Mandaluyong have ever seen this animal again since we were kids...and I dare say it is "extinct" and sad to say...it disappeared and nobody knew it ever existed (apart from a few 8 year old kids from Mandaluyong back in the 70's). It's good to have your documentaries being helpful in educating other people about what we have
(in the Philippines) and what we are about to lose. I grew up in the province of Rizal in a small town (Tanay), while growing up as a child my father would sometimes bring me with him in our mountain farm which is 30 to 40 minutes from the town proper. I'm always fascinated of the different kinds of birds there both big and small and to think it was just a few minutes away from the town proper. After almost 20 years now when I last saw the beauty of wild birds there. The forest in Rizal is fast decreasing if not have vanished by now, where these wild birds and animals used to thrive. I think in the mid 90's, the last time I wandered around our mountain farm, I think I saw a Worcester's Buttonquail (but not really realizing what kind of bird it was 'cause I've seen a lot of those while I was still young but not really sure if it was the same bird but of the same apperance). It's disheartining for me that every year when I go back to the Philippines to see that forests are continously decreasing and together with it is the probable extinction of some if not all specied of birds and animals living in it. I hope that (if possible through) your work could at least pinch in the heart of those people who's continuously abusing nature for personal profits most specially those government officials (in Tanay) and in the whole country and hope that our law will be imposed properly and strickly implimentented. Thank you and more power to you and your work. i am not so worried about if some of our exotic animals perish,it is part of global evolution,if those "birdie, geckos(butiki)etc.disappeared, another type of creatures would exist like those "janitor fish"that eat not only garbbages but edibles fish, vegetables that supply humans needs.
If those friendly birds disappeared, what would replace them are vampires birds, dragons, beast birds that eat humanbeing. If people victimized harmless creatures, beast creatures would victimized mankind. Our world is no longer a friendly planet,it is the generations of cannibals that survives and remain strong, those who are weak are eaten alive by creatures destined to devour the wholeworld...666 is at los!The number of man is six,so every group of three people is the total number of 666: The number of man is like the sand that spread all over the earth, and only a few stone(children of God)exist, all the rest belong to the generations of beast which is 666. If birds are the dead people that reincarnate themselves in birds body then people that eat birds are like cannibals that eating their fellow human being, mankind generation are no different from generation of sharks, whales, lions, crocodiles, cobras, snakes. We are living in the world, where evil(live) is the root of all misery, poverty, cruelty, insanity, craziness, wars, chaos. The solution for all of these is death for all of those living according to their evil desires, but only God can totally end the lives of every evil,by burning this planet make it a no manīs planet like planet mercury, for sure peace will finally took place. Where there is evil(live)there is no peace...peacefullness exist only in places of the dead. hi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was wonderig what inspierd you to take pictures
Hello Hawie,
Thanks for your segment on rare buttonquail because it gave hope that somewhere out there there are still rare birds hiding from the cruelties of man and of course sad because you honestly presented the fate of the poor bird. May you have more bird flicks to present. Mabuhay ka! The true last treasures of the Philippine Islands are its natural beauty and wildlife.
It's too bad many Filipinos are not aware of it, and are rapidly being destroyed. I hope we can preserve what is left. By the way here in Oregon, USA, the Visayan Warty Pig was a big hit in Oregon Zoo. |
