I love that lighthouse. Some years ago I saw from the Inquirer that someone had written a thesis on Philippine lighthouses. It's a great topic, since they symbolize so much of the country's maritime history. If the bozos running Philippine tourism would only invest in sprucing the lighthouses up and perhaps opening some nice classy accommodation nearby I think a Philippine lighthouse holiday would be a hit with foreign tourists. But of course that's too small-scale and too much like hard work -- it is much more visible to run hugely expensive adverts on CNN, despite the fact that the tourist infrastructure is so clapped out.
Also on lighthouses, I can't recommend "Lighthouse" by Tony Palmer highly enough. It is a work of oral history about the men who live on Britain's lighthouses (which, unlike Cape Bojeador, are usually on small rocky outcrops away from the mainland). Who are these people who live such isolated lives? You'd be amazed! Thanks Torn. That someone may be UST architectural historian Manolo Noche, who just published an illustrated book on Phil. lighthouses. The Cape Bojeador lighthouse is not in great shape either. I did suggest to the caretakers, employees of the Coast Guard, that they could earn enough to maintain the lighthouse better if they allowed visitors to spend a night or two in one of the empty rooms at the lighthouse's base. The terrific view and cool breeze, not to mention the novelty of the experience, would keep the tourists coming. But the Coast Guard would have none of that. They'd rather allow the place to break down, then blame their budgetary woes for the accident that will one day mar their spotless safety record on the cape.
Howie, thanks for this feature. I know that there was a project involving the Olympic swimmer Akiko Thompson being photographed with our lighthouses as background but I dont know what really happened (if it ever took off). I dont know if it would be a good idea for a coffee table book to have beauty pageant queens photographed in their usual swimsuits in these beautiful lighthouses.
Nice photos. Really nice of you to capture heaven's artwork. Howie, Thanks for Katrina's article. Thanks for the hope that shines through each line and thanks for her decision to stay. I really hope she does not learn the line "fight another day" in Sydney or anywhere else. It really hurts to feel left behind not because you want to go somewhere else but when patriots leave the struggle becomes a bit harder to provide a glimpse of hope to those who may still want to believe, to stay and to fight it out to the end in our dear "Bayang Magiliw".

This blog will attempt to find relevance in the exotic and the commonplace, value the undervalued, and satisfy my personal curiosity about all things that have anything to do with being Filipino. Howie Severino is a journalist, documentary maker, mentor, father, husband, patriot and pilgrim. He does two main gigs on television: I-Witness, GMA Network's pioneering documentary program, and Sine Totoo, a showcase for some of GMA's best non-fiction public affairs programming. For four years, Howie also reported on culture and travel in the quirky Sidetrip sa Saksi stories on the late night news. He has also worked at, in reverse chronological order, The Probe Team (reporter), Phil. Center for Investigative Journalism (staff), The Manila Chronicle (reporter), The Journal Weekender (editor), Department of Health (speechwriter), Ateneo de Manila High School (teacher), the Philippine Embassy in Wash.
