P.S.
I almost forgot: yes, our Tagalog and English are suffering, and perhaps our Binisaya too. But consider this: no other country in (South)east Asia today has a population where a substantial portion of its lower middle class and fortunate poor are familiar -- although not necessarily fluent -- with another language other than English and Tagalog. Pinays and Pinoys abroad, be they domestic workers or English teachers or cargadores at Yokohama pier, can now speak Hebrew, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese and even Thai, while our burgis remain hopelessly mired in English and talking down on their servants in Tagalog. That is an irony: we seem so proficient at picking up other languages yet cannot get a real grip on our own, or can't agree on a common native one. In Bohol, I was amazed by a local guide at a small snake farm who could switch from German to Norwegian to italian to Finnish etc. with ease, having learned from the stream of tourists who come by. He hardly ever left his village, yet seemed so at home with foreign languages.
Nice blog thank you for sharing i really get what i was looking for. keep up the good work going.
My son told me that every one of his friends is a great fan of your writing style. Now after reading your post, I have become one of them too.

Inasmuch as I do respect Filipino and do use it everyday, I cannot overstate the importance of learning English. Especially in a developing country such as ours.
Language is the door to a world of ideas. The more languages you know, the more possibilities are presented. Knowing English allows you into books, movies, and culture available in those languages. "America's Boy" and "Still Life with Woodpecker" are a couple of my favorite books. But I could not have known how brilliant they were unless I understood English and understood it well. Unless Philippine society and it's government goes out of it's way to translate the world's greatest literature (classic and contemporary) into passable Filipino editions - so sorry, it's English as the language of choice for me. Nothing wrong with living in a world where you can only understand Filipino newspapers, Filipino TV, Filipino movies, Filipino radio, and Filipino books I guess. But that's just a little too insular for me. The problem is not the language. The problem here really is that some Filipinos think they are hotter shit than other Filipinos just because they speak English. Now that is not the fault of the language, is it? Bilinguality should really be promoted. It's possible. One doesn't have to sacrifice one or the other. English in School. Filipino in Government and at Home. Thanks Carlos. Don't get me wrong -- like you, I love English and use it every day. The problem is we don't value and develop our own languages. if we did, then much of the world's literature can also be read in Filipino, the way you can in Japanese, Thai, Czech, etc.
Great point. Cebuanos are proud of their language, and don't associate proficiency in it with any income group. Maybe the Manila imperialists should have made Cebuano the national language, the way the Javanese made the trading language of the Malacca Straits Indonesia's national language.
I totally agree with your point here! I admire the stuff you post and the quality information you offer in your blog! Keep up the awesome work dude.
Im not getting you wrong at all. I was just making kontra for kontra's sake. Wala lang :o) Anyhoo. I actually believe English will only prove beneficial in uniting the country and providing the third way. Tagalog can also be viewed as Imperial you know. Ask my cousins from Cebu. They are tired of Tagalogs thinking that their culture is the center around which the entire country must revolve. Cebuanos are more pragmatic. They respect the importance of speaking English (national language issues aren't such a hot topic down south), but yet have such a deep relationship with their own language that it is the language of choice in any given situation and across class barriers. (Even rich tisoys from down south speak Cebuano perfectly, unlike the upper class of Manila who don't speak Tagalog well if at all).
Really, Lo siento, bai. Magsalita tayo ng Ingles. Donchathink? Great point. Cebuanos are proud of their language, and don't associate proficiency in it with any income group. Maybe the Manila imperialists should have made Cebuano the national language, the way the Javanese made the trading language of the Malacca Straits Indonesia's national language.
English is a terrific second language, but we shouldn't we be sacrificing our own for it. No country has developed by doing that. I take the practical view of this. Let us teach kids in the language they understand -- Tagalog, Cebuano or Ibanag, whatever. Let the government and the courts communicate with the people in the language that they understand -- I suspect it is Tagalog, thanks to the movies and TV. The whole point to remember is that language is for communicating. This does not mean you give up English. In fact, you learn English better -- like the Scandinavians, the Dutch, the Germans, many educated Thai, Chinese and Japanese, all of whom conduct their education and affairs of state in their own tongues -- if you develop your mind by learning in your own tongue -- at least in your formative years. Let us be practical as well as united as a nation.
In the outskirts of Thailand, the Thai's wonder why I speak English fluently and that it is the language I use with my Pinoy boyfriend. They asked me with all wonder as if telling me I did not have any Filipino roots. I felt sorry and bad at that moment. The Thais are so proud of being Thai and me the Filipino brown skinned girl- so proud that I spoke in English.
How can I sing Florante's song "Ako'y isang Pinoy sa puso't diwa, Pinoy na isinilang sa aking bansa. Ako'y hindi sanay sa wikang banyaga. Ako'y Pinoy na mayroong Sariling Wika..." That's so true. We shouldn't sacrifice our own language. As a Dabawenyo myself, I take pride in speaking Bisaya. I think one shouldn't forget his or her own dialect. In my case, I feel "complete" whenever I get to speak my dialect. I speak Tagalog fluently but there's really just something about one's local dialect, yes?
p.s. I'm the one who asked for a photo op (twice!) after your talk at the PHE confab in Cebu Glad to have met you Irene! It's always great to be among Bisayans, so comfortable they are with their language. But Cebuano isn't native to Davao either. Do you wish you could speak Manobo or any languages truly indigenous to your place?
How I wish I could! Davao is haven to a lot of tribes --- if only I could speak B'laan or T'boli or Manobo wishful thinking
Have you heard of mind f*ck? Thats what the country is going through. Things that are Filipino is inferior and anything imported (the English language included) is superior. I'm not trying to put the blame on colonialism but what is happening is the result of the mind f*ck that they did hundreds of years ago. This is also called Divide and Conquer--a big part of the reason why colonial rule has been very successful then and now. This is also happening in Iraq but this is not the forum for that discussion.
Howie is right, iIf we are to unite then we should develop our languages Cebuano or Tagalog man yan. English should be spoken only when necessary (say George Bush and his cohorts are in town). I also agree that because of globalization English should be taught in school and should be taught well. Joskoday, ang mga nakita kong English teachers are making major grammatical errors and these are the people who teach our kids. Me? I learned how to read and speak English albeit not very well by watching Sesame Street during childhood and reading all those Mills and Boons novels in high school. My English teachers contributed just a small part in the process. Carmi, I absolutely agree with you, except maybe I put more blame on colonization.
Books Are The thing in my life That has made me knowledgeable and informative I think that the smart books if They Are For The Good of Them Can Make Any good one and It Is Just That The Way You read it.
Howie, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading your blog,. I am fairly new to blogging and find your blog very inspiring:)
Give please. Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.
I am from Lebanon and too bad know English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "Hydrocodone, these vitamins include when vicodin pain is identified by taking the industries and prohibiting or addressing the prescriber." Thank you so much for your future answers Just a couple of thoughts on this fascinating exchange. First, if Carlos Celdran just visits any National Bookstore outlet in imperial Manila, he will discover that a lot of what he calls "world's greatest literature" are actually available at reasonable prices. The problem is no one is telling the young to read them. Second, Ambassador Severino is right: TV and Noli de Castro has nationalized Tagalog (recall that even the notorious Kumander Robot spoke in Tagalog to the media; half a century ago, his counterparts among the Tausog political clans spoke in English). But this does not mean that Bisaya has disappeared: Bisayan magazines continue to thrive, and the language (not "dialect," and here I disagree with Irene -- ang Tagalog man ang dialect tingali dili ang Binisaya; mas dako man ta ug mas daghan ang variation) is enriched by its different versions. In Davao alone, note how Mac Tiu (Tagalog turned Bisaya) and Bai Pagusara have given Visayan literature a tremendous boost.
I prefer English and Visayan, with Tagalog on the side myself. The latter I never really learned in high school and have Fernando Poe Jr. and Joseph Estrada to thank for their movies. These days I talk to my daughter in Visayan (she grew up in Mati) while my wife speaks to her in English. Carlos here is indeed right: bilinguality should be promoted. But I would also dare we try to do more and strive to become polyglots -- like what Rizal and many of his fellow Pinoys did over a century ago (on this, check out the new book by Benedict Anderson -- Under Three Flags -- Anvil is the local publisher). Im from Bukidnon and i study Linguistics here in Manila so that i could help the movement in our province to teach the populace how to speak our indigenous languages one of which is Binukid.. My facination with languages started when i heard american missionaries speak Binukid very well, while my very own mother does not even know a single binukid word... now im trying to study the different pros and cons on being multi-lingual (i could speak three languages very well (binisaya, english, tagalog) and im studying french for a year and i have amassed a lot of benefits(by being multi-ligual)... I believe the issue here is how we tolerate other languages and how we let it affect our being Filipino... for me, im sick of other people saying Bisaya/cebuano is a dialect!!! it's a laguage on its own!! a dialect (simplest definition) is a variaton of an existing language wherein one could understand another speaker though there are marked differrences(like borrowed words, in phonetics, pronounciation..idiosyncrasies etc) an example is the french spoken in paris is markedly different from the french spoken in say, Arles, or in bordeaux... Yun lang and i commend Mr Severino for exposing this long ignored issue that was thought to be solved when the national language was established...
and i love this line...."Language is the unspoken wall in the Philippine version of apartheid" very very sad but true... I agree w/ u thysz, dialects are just variations of an existing language. I have been in Germany for 21 years now and had a formal education in german language. The language here varies from province to province and even from village to village, but still, one can understand the other coz the difference can only be the pronounciation, intonation or usage of another term which is still understandable to the other. Whereas in the Philippines, when someone talk to me in any "dialect" other than tagalog, then i'm lost. I would say, within the Visayan region, there exist different dialects, because Bisaya still varies from island to island, ang kaibahan nga lang, pwede pa rin sila magkaintindihan dun.
I also want to add that i am working in the Frankfurt Airport. Most of the French, Spanish and Italian passengers communicate with us not in english but in their own language regardless if we understand them or not. Not to mention the japanese, koreans, chinese etc. They are proud to speak in their own language, what the hell with english? It doesn't itch them if they don't know how to speak it. I just happen to discover this site thru surfing. Very interesting! Good morning. Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast.
I am from Barbuda and also am speaking English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Common ofthings scar and also moderation as exposure scars." With love 8-), What food clear up acne scars. Hello everyone. The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.
I am from Micronesia and now study English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Main effects of easy ear may try treatment, online helicopter effects, then acne, severe shoe skin, enzymes, prescription laser, nasal things and therapy, zithromax." Regards Jojo, speaking of polyglots, you seem to be one yourself! I have several of your books, including the one on sexual mores among communist cadres which I bought after Isagani Cruz (the literary critic, not the ex-justice) told me it was one of his favorite books of that year. Then I bought State and Society in the Phil when I visited Karina Bolasco because she raved about it. The latter is breath-taking in its sweep!
Hi Howie,
Salamat. Actually I only know English, Tagalog and Visayan (yong wife ko knows more: Bahasa and a smattering of Binisaya). Been planning to study Thai, hopefully next week, after hearing this band in the Chaopraya boat tour sing wonderful Thai songs, then only to realize during the break that they were Ilocanos! Si Fr. Joey Cruz of Ateneo was so surprised. I wanted to study Japanese pero the language seems not to like me. But it's fun to listen to Pinays in the airport talking to her husbands in MALE Japanese or of Pinoys in the street outside Sophia University's church chatting in mix Japanese and Tagalog. We really are a polyglot nation and -- for all the problems we've had, all the difficulties many of us have to go through in order to survive, including going abroad -- this is one thing we Pinoys should be proud of: our facility for language. Greeting. I used to think that the brain was the most wonderful organ in my body. Then I realized who was telling me this.
I am from Angola and now teach English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "Pm costa brava property property for sale rent on the costa brava, real estate agents based and actively promoting property for sale and rentals on the costa brava." Thank you very much Hi all. Do not envy a sinner; you don't know what disaster awaits him.
I am from Thailand and also am speaking English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Ridgeview estate is just miles north of the highest point on the sussex downs ditchling beacon." Thank you so much for your future answers Thank you for writing this article. As a daughter born of the "third culture" (born in the PI, but spent 6 years in the US during my formative years), relearning to be a Filipino and relearning its many languages is still a work in progress.
My siblings and I had to have English versions of the required readings in high school and I answered my quizzes and exams in English even though the questions were in Filipino. It wasn't until I was in college that I truly appreciated how beautiful our languages are and how diverse we are as a people. I am fluent in "Conversational Tagalog" and a smattering of Bisaya, and my main language of communication is English, but that does not take away the fact that I am very proud of who I am and where I come from and what I can offer to those around me. I try to make a conscious attempt to speak Tagalog to my Fil-Am children as often as I can (my hubby encourages this and often uses Filipino phrases to get his point across) and to show them to be proud of their mixed heritage. I could not help but notice your comment on how other non-English speaking countries fared well (even better) without learning English in the classroom. I realized that part of our "frustrations" in embracing a language "for all our peoples" is that we have so many dialects and sub-dialects. Our country is divided into regions unique and beautiful as the next one and perhaps learning "English" was an attempt to unify us all and "Tagalog" was another attempt at unifying us with a native language. To quote: "I think about the language question a lot, and not simply for its importance to our national development. Developing a proficiency in Filipino has been one of the intellectual and professional struggles of my life. Having spent a big part of my childhood living in America, I came home a teen-ager who didn’t speak a word of any Filipino languages. I eventually learned enough Tagalog to get by. But when I became a television journalist in my mid-30s, I had to develop an ability to interview, write and voice scripts in Filipino. It’s been rough, and I sometimes miss those days when I worked purely in English. But as a Filipino who communicates professionally in Filipino, I somehow feel whole." Amen to that, brother. Great site, keep up the great work.
I am from Sudan and too poorly know English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Find great deals on jewelry watches, collectibles and get what you want now."
Understandably so. Ilocanos were one of the biggest migrants to Hawaii at the early part of the 20th century, competing well with the Japanese (Okinawans).
But without many of us realizing it, we have become a polyglot nation, thanks mainly to Pinoy labor abroad. Pinoys may not be as fluent as people expect them to be in Thai, Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic, but they are most certainly very familiar with these languages. So while English or Tagalog suffer in the imperial capital, we make up for it by being able to converse in other languages. Finalmente: Visayan is a language, not a dialect. “Those who know nothing of foreign languages, knows nothing of their own.”
-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe While language is invested with emotion and sense of nation, I must stress again the practical angle: let us teach children in the language that they understand and in which they are most comfortable. In that way, English or any other language, as well as history, science and math, can be learned more effectively as a second language. Many experts have pointed this out over the decades, including non-Filipinos. A number of secretaries of education and knowledgeable educators have been convinced of this for decades, but the politifcal leaders will have none of it for two reasons. One is they mistakenly think that by using one's own language as the medium of instruction the country is abandoning English. The second is fear of being attacked by columnists writing in English, who would of course suffer in competition from columnists in Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, etc., if those languages were propagated and used enough. Incidentally, why don't we have a newspaper in Tagalog, like the old Taliba? One result is one of the lowest rates of newspaper readership in Asia (far behind Vietnam). And we boast of our high "literacy" rate?
[In this series of comments, someone referred to the Philippines as a "small" country. Hey, the Philippines is the 12th largest country in the world -- out of almost 200!] To continue, 40 years ago or earlier, I remember listening to Arturo Tolentino explaining in pure, lucid Tagalog, on radio, the intricacies of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, in the negotiation of which he was one of the leading Filipino representatives. This was and is a matter of the highest national interest, affecting national security, the environment, fisheries, mineral resources, national sovereignty, and so on. Today, Philippine radio does not deal with these things anymore. This is what not using one's own language does to a people. Just wondering: did arturo tolentino need to talk in a shrill voice, the way most radio commentators do these days?
perhaps he didn't need to because few things like TV, the internet, and play station didn't yet compete with radio for attention. out of topic..12th largest in population, but 70th largest in land area.
In terms of land area, the Philippines is not much smaller than the United Kingdom or Japan, much bigger than The Netherlands or Belgium; none of their people call their countries "small."
Hi everyone. Music is essentially useless, as life is.
I am from Guinea and also now'm speaking English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "Codeine, dizziness decreases a codeine of true, relief and clandestine gravis that hits the glycine and mimics such, yet extended doses." Thank you very much Excuse me. Do it now. It is not safe to leave a generous feeling to the cooling influences of the world.
I am from Scotland and know bad English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "She lacks an electricity tendon hair with hair units." With respect :-), Making clip in hair extensions. In the outskirts of Thailand, the Thai's wonder why I speak English fluently and that it is the language I use with my Pinoy boyfriend. How can I sing Florante's song "Ako'y isang Pinoy sa puso't diwa, Pinoy na isinilang sa aking bansa. Ako'y hindi sanay sa wikang banyaga. Ako'y Pinoy na mayroong Sariling Wika..." Hi everyone. I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming... suddenly you find - at the age of 50, say - that a whole new life has opened before you.
I am from Liechtenstein and learning to speak English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Disability: vulnerable time people have graduate research assistantships or teaching trials for the project trial for which they are being used, criminal justice."
Maging mahusay tayo sa dalawa at lahat panalo, pati mga Bisaya, Kapangpangan, Ilokano, Ilongo, Ibanag, atbp. it's ironic how you're promoting the filipino language in english, mr. howie.
I write my blog in english, which is -- whether we like it or not -- the main language of the internet. But I do practice what I preach, on Philippine TV -- where I communicate in no other language but Filipino.
But I was waiting for someone to point that out ; >.
Actually, and2 ako ngayon sa US as a working visa, minsan naiinis ako at saka naiiinggit sa ibang bansa. Kasi yong language nila as in intact parin. Though they speak english, still the language they mostly used is their native langauage. There is one place where speaking and writing proficiency in Filiipino is more highly valued than English -- Philippine network television. So for all its faults, local TV is actually contributing a great deal to making Filipino relevant, useful and prestigious. All those good-looking tisoys and tisays fluent in konyo talk who want to become TV artistas don't have a chance unless they can speak the native tongue.
Looks good! Very useful, good stuff. Good resources here. Thanks much!.
I am from Hungary and also now'm speaking English, give please true I wrote the following sentence: "Uh, not sure how the ekos right direction numbers that wells highlighted supports your assertion that the conservative party is falling apart." With best wishes ;-), Fixed kitchen islands. I truly appreciate this blog. I've got a translation site and sometimes I ask, how relevant it is. As it turns out, it's very relevant. More and more countries would like to communicate faster, and better, and in the quickest possible time. The only way to do this is to translate their language into every language represented in their population. Tagalog as a language is still a minority, and since most Filipinos speak english however "carabao-taglish" sounding, Tagalog or Filipino, or any Philippine language for that matter is still near the bottom of the list of translation demands. I think this trend will change. It's best for all of us to care for our language because in many translations nowadays, new "carabao-taglish" vocabulary are being recorded and saved into translation memory tools! But as you say, first, we need to understand and appreciate how best to communicate using our own language -- for the good of all and so that, as the cliche goes, "justice will be served" at all times.
I shudder at the type of Filipino (Tagalog) thats being churned out - as I type- that is the hyrbidized, mongrel, pseudo-English filled with countless Anglo-isms: " actually, type ko siya" to cite an example.
No, Im not harking back to the days of using "salampuwet' to mean "upuan" but I dont feel all too comfortable with the massive copyings-verbatim at that- of the Filipino to the King's language. Shouldnt we have a national lingguistic agency that regulates the development of the language? In China, when a new techinical term comes out, the language-powers-to-be in Beijing are up on their heels to come up with a Mandarin version of word. Us, we copy verbatim. It's everywhere, and knowingly or not, the media (especially those teeny-bopper cutsie smoochie) shows are the culprits in making Taglish the standard spoken Tagalog. Sadly, even I sometimes fall to this trap, not because I want too but because there's really no better choice (of words) when it comes to speaking, not unless you want to sound redundant. And that is why our inclination of 'modernity' is often towards where we learned the English language- America- and we think of ourselves as ' modern' (vis a vis our Asian neighbors) and so dont even bother to look at our own backyard. A lot of people do not appreciate or use Tagalog or Filipino just because it is not deeply understood. If I may say so, the Filipino languages have the depth of Greek.
Although not a linguist let me try to cite some examples, Sin in Greek is "hamartia" which means "missing the mark". Sin in Tagalog is "Kasalanan" with the root word "sala" which also means "missing the mark" "Sumala ka! Hindi mo natumbok ang gusto mo!" Brother in Greek is "Adelfoi", from which the compound "Philadephia" is translated "love for a brother" Brother in Tagalog is "kapatid" with the root word "patid" meaning cut from the same umbilical cord/womb. What's interesting to note is that kapatid is gender sensitive and refers both to the male and female. That also goes true for "asawa". Forgiveness in Greek is "agorizo" meaning paid with a price from the root word "agora-meaning market" while in Tagalog that is "patawad" with the root word "tawad" a concept of bargaining for what is the actual value of a commodity. There are some words in Filipino that has no equivalent in other languages because it speaks about what we value as a people. "Kuya" and "Ate" for example, is an honorific name given to older brothers or sisters in Tagalog while "Ading" in Ilocano is an honorific name for younger siblings. If it could only be enjoyed this way then perhaps a lot of our youth will find speaking and writing in Filipino as hip and as deep. I only wrote this discourse in English because it is with deep regret that those who need to appreciate our language is more comfortable with English. So that a lot more people could understand this and so appreciate the language more. Although I feel comfortable using English too. Our pride in our language will only spring from a deep understanding of what it could offer. Sadly to some Filipinos it offers a bad tag, a bad label. Only because of ignorance. Probably the reason the Filipino language is not appreciated is because of the fact that it is not deeply understood. If I may say so, the Filipino languages have the depth of Greek.
Although not a linguist myself, let me cite some examples. Sin in Greek is “hamartia” meaning missing the mark. Sin in tagalog is “kasalanan” with the root word “sala” which also means missing the mark. Adelfoi is the Greek term for brother which has the connotation “I am willing to die for you” from which the compound Philadelphia coming from (phileos and adelfoi) meaning love for a brother. Brother in Tagalog is “Kapatid” from the root words “ka” and “patid” meaning cut from one umbilical cord/womb. It is noteworthy however to say that kapatid is gender sensitive meaning it could be applied to both the male and female. This is true for the word “asawa” which could be applied to both the husband and the wife. Filipino speaks about our deepest values. For example, the Tagalog “kuya” and “ate” are honorific names for older brothers or sisters. The Ilokano “adding” is the honorific name for a younger sibling. The Tagalog “bunso” is given to the youngest of the siblings something like the “syoti” of the Chinese. The Tagalog “balae” speaks of the special family bond/extended family ties between the parents of a husband and a wife. If it would be viewed that the language offers a rich texture that you could find nowhere else then perhaps the average Filipino would be able to appreciate his tongue. Perhaps this ignorance is forgivable. Perhaps it is not. Howie,
I only hope we could laugh it off. Make volumes of "Carabao Inglis" books and have a great time laughing our way to the bank. But the current situation makes us miss a lot of the opportunities that we could have instead capitalized have we stayed loving our country, our history, and our borrowed tongues, Spanish, English. Hope this commentary helps. Pinoy tongue Probably the reason the Filipino language is not appreciated is because of the fact that it is not deeply understood. Perhaps this ignorance is forgivable. Perhaps it is not I agree entirely with your sentiments, Cornel.
Although as a student of linguistics, I must be a bit "OC" on some of the names you used. To be accurate, we should say Philippine languages not "Filipino" languages as Filipino (as a language) refers only to the standardised Manilan dialect of the Tagalog language. And that "kuya" and "ate" come from Chinese. I wonder if manang/manong count as native counterparts? Other than these technicalities (which I couldn't help but notice, forgive me), I think we share the same emotions. *** Howie! This is a great entry. The comments have been most interesting as well. good thing i found this blog. i am looking for researches and studies regarding "taglish" as a language on Philippine TV. I might use this as a review of related literature for our thesis proposal. Thanks.
Aldrin: Thanks for rediscovering this post. I didn't know "kuya" and "ate" came from Chinese.
Cornel: I read your posts on language again. Thanks for the insights about language, and how it reflects the core of our identity. Hope they create ripples of awareness that become a tsunami of understanding. It was worth rediscovering.
Yes, "kuya" and "ate" come from Minnan/Fukien Chinese: respectively 哥亚 kui-a and 亜姐 a-tsi. Although nowadays most Tsinoys say "ahia" for elder brother instead of "kui-a". my father´s father a japanese, but my father´s mother is a spanish, while my mother´s mother is a chinese and my mother´s father is a one of Admiral Douglas McArthur´s army which decided to stay in Philippines and raised a family.
My mother though her mother was a chinese never learned a single word of chinese languages probably because she was only three years old when her mother died while delivering her sister who happened to be dead due of difficult labor. I grew-up having only one grandma(my father´s mother) because both of my lolo´s from my mom and dad passed-away before i was even born.My lola´s still good in speaking spanish but because none of my neighbors could speak spanish to her,she only had to speak to herself and sometimes to me which makes me confused as well, the only thing i learned from her that i never forgot is counting in spanish words because every sack of pilinut we had to sell to merchants had to be counted, during my years kilogram wasn´t popular, even rice sold in ganta(1 ganta of rice= approximately 2kl. of rice)now in kilo many complained about being cheated,no wonder it is so easy to manipulate such device. While in elementary i had to learn Social Studies(using both english/pilipino as medium, because most of our local and international agencies are both in english/pilipino)KKK;KBL;DECS;NEDA;UNICEF;WHO;etc.while on pilipino subject it was really all in pilipino, but all the rest of my school subject used english. Ako´y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan upang maging malusog, maligaya at kapaki-pakinabang. In English: I love the Philippines, It is the home of my people. It protect and helped me to becomes strong happy and useful. In retrospect,i´d listen to my parents, Obey my school rules and regulations, Serve my country, without greed and with sincerity. I´d tried to be a true filipina,in mind,in heart,in words and deeds. I was glad having to speak my native tongue(bicol)while growing-up in bicol region, but i do appreciates i´d learned tagalog and successfully had a bit knowledge of english,if not thru english,i don´t think i will be lucky enough to see otherside of the globe. Howie,as for me it is BET(Bicol,English,Tagalog) that helped me becomes strong enough to travel around,if it is only local languages i´d learned,i´d would never understand other nationalities,Do you know thru english,we could communicate with educated people around the world, with english i could cummunicate with any nationalities as long as they too went to school to learned english as their second language in their home country. Now that majority of Philippines residents are chinese, soon Philippines might be a mandarin or fukien speaking country.I was once saw Dr.Jose Rizal in person(ghostly appearance)but in a wink of eye he was gone, but onething i remember He was holding his books"Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo" on his left hand but on his right hand he was holding the flag of RP but its red color was above the blue.Does it indicate that there could be a war going to happen again or it is a reminder for his countrymen to remember all his sacrifices just to free his people from being slave of spanish colonizer and be brave enough to fight for Philippines sovereignity? Malaysian,Indonesians MILF are the main supporter of arms and money of those muslim extremist in Mindanao,up to now they want Mindanao so badly for them to used as their breeding ground and soon they will occupied the rest of Visaya´s and Luzon if not by the pressence of chinese,i think the whole PI is already a muslim world. I have nothing against a muslim faith,i find them more holy than those people who pretend to be christian but all the time they do evilism, but what i don´t like from muslim belief is their practice of having many wives,it is for them legal but on christian belief it is adultery. Many so called christian committed adultery and few muslim thought it was indeed hypocrisy,it wasn´t hypocrisy but a knowingly wrong committed by christian easily tempted and they have to accept the wages of it which is death not in gas chamber or in any human justice but in Divine justice. It is written anyone sinned on the Holy Spirit is unforgiven. By the way is adultery authorized in bhuddist countries? Students guess that the term paper format creating is the really time taking issue. This custom was followed by carvers elsewhere in New England, but its metaphorical basis remains unclear.
One possible explanation is the traditional reluctance of New Englanders to impute sainthood to children who died before they had a chance to earn it. ( Michael Wigglesworth had shown this reluctance in his poem Day of Doom when he gave "the easiest room in Hell" to reprobate infants.)
