A battle over paradise

For three generations, a close-knit clan of fisherfolk have claimed the tiny, white-fringed islet of Mantigue in Camiguin province as their home -- a prized piece of real estate in the tourism economy. Now the government wants it back and return the island to its natural state for day visitors to enjoy. The effort of local officials to relocate the residents, including a mass arrest of the entire island population, has bitterly divided the community. Eerily evoking the group dynamics of the popular TV program Survivor, but with much higher stakes, family members threaten and back-stab each other over the wrenching decision to leave or fight for a slice of paradise. At the center of the conflict is the tormented Romulo, who has finally decided to accept the government's resettlement offer and urge his neighbors to do the same. The rest of the clan, including his cousins and siblings, accuse him of treachery and try to discredit him.  Howie Severino and his team camp out on the islet and explore its hidden natural treasures, even scuba diving at night to accompany spear fishermen hunting precious food fish. They also see how the intensifying planetary choices between people and nature play out in a very small space.  spending summer in camiguin always involves a whole day of boating in mantigue and asking the fishermen to cook the fish after we buy their catch... the friendly residents of mantigue are part of the island's charm. how can the government drive them away and possibly turn the island into a tacky 'tourist destination' (like how they developed the other government controlled tourist attraction).. i smell something fishy on this one..either the local government is planning to have an overpriced tourism project that will create an avenue for corruption or the area is found ideal for illegal activities (read: drug trafficking). i suggest i-witness should do a deeper investigation on the issue.. they might catch a bigger fish of a story.

I wasn't able to reply to your exclusive offer regarding the name of this island. It's because since the start of this sem, we're doing community field work and I had no time to go online. Anyway, my guess is wrong. I would've answered an island in Occidental Mindoro for no other reason than I missed my birthplace. Logic says it's an island in Mindanao (which happened to be true), though I don't know exactly where. Hopefully, the video's running online so I can watch it. Roy, yes that's the main issue on Mantigue: Is the reef better off with or without the community there, and can the government with its dismal track record do a better job?

If i were the gov´t,i just let those residence stay there,the gov´t has to solve first the biggest environmental problem it has in cities of Luzon before trying to bring tourist garbbage in that no man´s land.Those poor residence can not bring as much garbbages as those potential visitor could bring like poisonous chemicals,radio active materials that could contaminate well the said island. true...am not a camiguinon but saw the no man's land documentary, i felt it was so biased in favor of the gov't who want the residents to be evicted to pave the way for be purely a tourist destination area or to build a casino...the residents an small establishments near themarket in mambajao too were demolished...the almahong tribe in brgy liong in guinsiliban received a notice of eviction as the area is to be named as diosdado macapagal park, all these are designed for the influx of development aggression t the island in exchange for the displacement of the poor people or the residents. If it is genuine concern for the development of the island, then it should be the people that should be the center of development NOT infrastructure only..empower the people with livelihood skills to increase their buying capacity..
Hi Nellie, We interviewed a range of people and investigated, and found no evidence that there is a plan to build a casino or any major tourism facility on Mantigue Island. It's not easy to give government anywhere the benefit of the doubt, but I did so in this case. Whether evicting residents is the best way to protect the island environment is what should be debated.
