Monday, February 18. 2008Taking the plunge at Wawa Dam Teens and even a seven year old were diving off the old watch tower next to Wawa Dam in Montalban, Rizal yesterday morning. That's at least a forty-foot drop into a defunct but still watery reservoir supposedly polluted by one of Asia's largest piggeries upstream. This is not what I would do for fun.  But there I was yesterday morning on the same ledge pondering my fate. I had just arrived in Manila about ten hours before, after a 20-hour cutting trip from freezing New York. Duty was asking me to jump off the ledge in my street clothes for a shot that would (it better!) end up in the upcoming I-Witness plug (TV industry parlance for a commercial promoting a show).  More than two dozen peeps were watching, including the overconfidence-inspiring director Monti Parungao and hunky cameraman Kikoy Rapadas who matter-of-factly assured me there would be only one take (it didn't strike me then as an ominous assurance). They and the rest were probably wondering if I would chicken out at the end.  My jet-lag-induced grogginess moderated one basic instinct (fear of foolish fatal accidents) and pandered to another (fear of cowardliness). I was awake enough to first ask locals about the depth of that murky water. I assessed the risk-reward ratio, and thought of the decision tree in my head before I leaped from a giant rock off Apo Island two years ago. I jumped into the old reservoir. After the splash slightly stung my sandaled soles, I tasted that greenish water and heard the crowd cheer. Hey, that was fun! The Wawa Dam was constructed in 1909 by the Americans as a reservoir and pumping facility. It became a battlefield during the Japanese occupation. Many Japanese soldiers died here defending this holding point when the Americans retook the area. A marker was placed in one of the caves that anyone passing through the trail can see. It was placed in honor of these brave men.
