I saw Auraeus Solito's PISAY yesterday, a sweet love letter to his alma mater. It was the morning screening at the CCP so I thought I'd be alone with my son and brother with great seats. But that happened to be when nearly the entire Philippine Science High School student body and faculty saw it, so it was a festive SRO event with the audience howling at familiar campus locations and personalities.
The coming-of-age story follows several gifted students through their entire high school lives, as they deal with first romance, academic failure and success, pressures at home, the death of a classmate, and the turbulent years right after Ninoy Aquino's assassination, climaxing with the EDSA revolt shortly before the students graduated. That was also the time period that Auraeus spent on campus, so it was to an extent autobiographical. The camera work by Charlie Peralta was superb, but Auraeus had much to do with shooting a school he knows well. So one can't help thinking that he might have been planning the more exquisite shots in his head for years: the slow long shot through a multi-story wall window of two teens trying to negotiate a date while walking down the stairs in the school, the reflection of the trees outside playing on the glass as the camera followed the couple descending; the high school military cadets marching under the fire trees in bright bloom; two teens engaged in girl talk in the moonlight on the second-floor ledge of their school building. Then there are the 360 degree shots that are the signature of this movie, capturing the masked protest play that was moved outdoors after it was censored by the faculty; and the classroom scenes of budding scientists.
 Auraeus Solito, center, with his young cast. Auraeus and direk Laurice Guillen were right: This may be the first movie that portrays modern Filipino youth as being as brilliant as Rizal had envisioned more than a century ago. If I have any quibble with it as a critical viewer, it's with the story itself. I was expecting a climax in campus life equal to what occurred at EDSA, since national upheaval was the parallel story to what was happening on campus. Or maybe that's simply how 1986 went for the characters' real-life counterparts. This is after all semi-autobiographical. The mestiza heartthrob Wena also didn't work for me, despite her innocent beauty, because her American english was jarring in a movie with otherwise Tagalog dialogue. Didn't she have to pass her Filipino subjects? Conyo english or Taglish would have fit her landlord daughter role better. I'm biased of course, but I wish the impact of her driven campus journalism got more play. The best acting came from thespians who played the faculty characters. Wena Basco was her usual brilliant self. Eugene Domingo as the squarish Ms. Casas was a riot. The dj Claudine Najera who played a gorgeous, earnest math teacher was a revelation; we should see more of her in the future. Even the eminent Ateneo sociologist Mary Racelis was convincing as the kind principal. The scoring summoned emotions that the film sought in its viewers: a bittersweet evocation of youth, first love, and the promise of a future as broad as the sky waiting for Halley's Comet. Trackbacks

About the movie, I'm almost afraid to write about it because it'd be a dead giveaway. Apart from the clothes and the lingo, there's really very little that has changed about Pisay over the years, and so (I'm taking the liberty here of speaking for everyone else), the movie was as much ours as it was about Auraeus'. My favorite part about the movie was that it showed how Pisay kids undergo a lot of the same things that other kids their age go through, the same insecurities, the same affectations, and the same sense of how everything is matter of life and death when you're in high school. Pisay marked us, and we spend the rest of our lives trying to both live up to our potentials, and to live those expectations down. Perhaps that's why it's appropriate that the story ended that way.
