Southeast Asia: In Search of an ASEAN Community By Rodolfo C. Severino (Published by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Singapore)  My father's new book on ASEAN, which was at least three years in the making but the product of a long diplomatic career, has been a proud family achievement. But at last month's ASEAN Summit, President Arroyo made it the Philippines' own as well. She invited my dad, former ASEAN Secretary General and retired Ambassador Rodolfo Severino, to present his book to all the heads of state present in Cebu. Instead of memoirs, my father chose to write about contemporary Southeast Asia and provides a road map for its future. He confronts head-on some of the key issues that bedeviled the region in recent times, highlighting the years when he served as Secretary General (1998-2002). Among the concerns he addresses are regional security, Asia's financial crisis 1997-98, haze, SARS, Myanmar, human rights, Sabah, the Spratleys, terrorism, and "the ASEAN way" of consensus and non-confrontation.
He has long been an advocate of greater regional integration, not simply for its economic benefits but as a way for smaller nations to deal with the giants of Asia and the world. "He knows practically everybody in the field," says distinguished ASEAN watcher Hal Hill on the back cover.
