Saturday, January 13. 2007Panata in Pandacan Every year at this time, the hardscrabble life in Pandacan, Manila makes way for the fiesta - an Ati-Atihan transplanted from this migrant community's native Aklan soil. Beneath the paeans to the Santo Nino beat the animist hearts of true islanders.  The steady drumming in the narrow alleyways begins before dawn tomorrow, calling residents to dust off their little Caucasian dolls, blacken their faces with charcoal to resemble the original natives, and join the dancing, drunken procession all the way to the church. A "panata" is what the insiders call it. To outsiders, it's just a rowdy good time.  Pandacan lies at the intersection of two great arteries, the Pasig River and the railroad. When the deadly train is not rumbling to Bicol just inches away from children playing, dozens of trolleys ply the tracks, powered by human muscle and patronized by passengers who like the five-peso fare, the more breathable air, and the faster flow of traffic.  Beneath the tracks, right before the steel supports that stretch across the Pasig River stop at land, are homes. After the last train rolls above their heads around 7 p.m., the riverside community settles in for quiet evenings. Except of course during fiesta time. Trackbacks
