Isn't this a common feature in a Third World country? Ask Graham Greene, C.J.Koch, V.S.Naipaul and company?
In his book 'A Cook's Tour,' Anthony Bourdain's taxi driver in Phnom Penh had to pull over when a relative of Hun Sen passed by in an SUV accompanied by a motorcycle police escort...and another Hun Sen kin shot off the tires of his airplane when the crew misplaced his luggage-- behavior which did not result in arrest. Gosh I really wish I could ask Graham Greene, Naipaul et al. Never got a chance to meet them. I suppose heads of state anywhere could justify having police part the red sea so they could pass. But perhaps the Philippines differs in having even wealthy wedding entourages or two-bit trapos escorted by cops.

That is very true about the president's entourage.
Since we've lived in Baguio for the last 6 years, my family had the chance to have a photo-op with the president, the smile, the wave, the entire package. And then there's this one time when we were on our way to manila along the NLEX, my wife and kids are all sleeping while i was driving. All of a sudden a group of SUV's head right infront of me. I was caught by surprised since i was on the southbound lane and these big black vehicles with bright lights and loud sirens were going towards my direction head on. It was like a car chase sequence from a Michael Bay film. Boy did i get the scare of my life, at the back of my mind i was praying for the Lord to deliver us. Had it not been for the mercy of God, my family would not have woke to see the light of that day. I was the only one awake and i never even bother to tell my wife the story. It was horrible. I would like to make a brief comment about why most of the security escorts to some politicians are oftentimes seen in public as being over-protective of the person they are supposed to protect. The reason why that was the case is due to the fact that most of the high profile people either be in government or in private life has accumulated a lot of enemies during their term in office. Hence, the over eager security men around them. Wouldn't you be scared being out in the open knowing that there's a lot of people out there who really wants to see you dead?
yah, and may I ask how/why have they accumulated these lots of enemies? because they have promised special favors for them when/if they get elected in return to the massive donations for the now-public official's campaigns! is this reason enough for you to just swallow politely all these high and mighty politician's abuse of power???
No one has ever mentioned anything about "abuse of power" in the comment i just made miss. I was not even trying to take side on these people. The point is, some people get irritated every time their trip on the road or on air has been delayed because a presidential entourage has come their way. Those people responsible to get the car of the president from point A to point B has an extremely difficult job to say the least. Please, let's not take any pot-shots on these people. The presidential security group in particular and the presidential security command in general are doing a heck of a good job. The same holds true, whenever a president is literally unapproachable to some people or even within easy reach to some. A case in point, when at a public meeting Mrs Imelda Marcos decided that she would never want to see any one of her security around her for the simple reason that seeing her with security around in public gatherings will make her look "out of touch" as she calls it. And then, a terrible thing happened, a deranged man approach her at the stage and stab her. The point is, security can never be taken for granted or set aside, ordinary people like you and me are expendable, but, not the president. Mrs Arroyo is still around, is she? thank her security on that one.
Hi Howie,
I'm an avid fan of your program and your columns. Talking about airplane, I happen to witness a helicopter crash when I was in Palawan for a short vacation two weeks ago. When I went back to manila and asked my friends if they happen to hear a helicopter crash in the news or papers, and seem to have not heard anything at all. I thought the incident was huge that media has to take hold of the scene, while rescue and recovery of the fallen EC130 helicopter is being facilitated by local people and authorities. Well I thought it was Pambihira naman!
Putting the blame on the presidential party of being on the tarmac and obviously wasting a lot of people's time would indeed put your nerve up on the roof. You might want to put the blame on whoever is responsible to make a sound schedule of flights coming in and out of the airport. Better yet, fire that person for being so incompetent in his job. Absolutely! These are just some of the so many annoying things that happens all the time at most airports. Speaking of which, why are baggages arriving at Ninoy International Airport coming from abroad are most often than not, being looted before you could get your hands on it.Now, this has to stop, why? because the majority of people who want to make the Philippines as their number one choice of destination were having a second thought whenever they hear horror stories like these ones.Believe me, it's not about terrorism or some untruthful travel advisories coming from some people who hasn't been or seen the beautiful Philippines, it's always the thought in everyone who wants to travel to the Philippines, that, they are gonna get rip off right at the airport by some thugs milling around in their "barong tagalog". Well people! can we just make it as pleasant as possible for an ordinary traveler to visit the Philippines? What can i say? Let's all shout "Mabuhay!" Anyone out there who happen to read this blog, please, don't hesitate to respond. Thanks in advance. We are all on this together folks.

I've read all your postings about this matter. Being a law enforcement officer myself, I understand why the gripping nature of security is observed and practiced all throughout the world. Yes, I agree that some people do tend to abuse this perk. However, place yourself in the shoes of those who are in power. Knowing that your life is always on the line and in jeopardy of being taken away by someone you don't even know. Secondly, I agree with Rey Juico about the poor planning of the Air Traffic Controller or Dispatcher for Gulf Air. These trips of any heads of state are planned and usually the airport is given a 3-5 days of preparation. If they can't plan ahead to carry out the protocol of having the president's aircraft out before the rest of the aircrafts in the air starts falling because they ran out of fuel, then please do fire that or those individuals in-charge of these planning! It's poor and incompetent planning and execution! And for those who have no idea about the protocols of high profile government security, SHUT THE HELL UP! You are just making yourself look more stupid as it is!
^ Randy, read the account. the presidential entourage took their time taking off. they overstayed. and it's not for a frigging security matter. it's to attend a wedding, a sosyalan.
I'm sorry, but, did i miss something here? Who is making a comment about the presidential entourage taking their time at the tarmac, how did he or she know about what's happening on schedules of the presidential entourage? Believe me, the last thing that those people involved in her security was to sit around in airports, you haven't got the slightest clue. There could be some checks that has to be done on the plane for all you know. And if you're in a hurry yourself to use the airport, why don't you try flying a plane when the president is standing around the tarmac, and find out yourself first hand, what "security" means.
this has always been a problem, politicians always get a police escort to avoid the traffic jam, which i think one reason why until now the traffic in the metro is still at its peak, so to say, because they do not experience what the tax payers is experiencing, how hard to go to one place to another because of traffic. indeed their lives maybe threatened however do they really need to take 2-3 lanes in EDSA, and does it really have to be a very long parade of cars with sirens?!?
Well Cindy, unfortunately, the president has to leave the Malacanang Palace every now and then to attend to her subjects, that is, like you and me, and some other errands that she has to do. Now, for the president to leave the confines of the Palace is something that involved a lot of thought. An example of which, is to make sure that if there is anyone out there who wants to hurt her bad, security always wants to make sure that not a lot of innocent bystanders would get hurt. Hence, they try as much as they could to stay away from civilians like you and me, and consequently, they have to occupy a wider space on the road. I hope that, i have answered your extremely annoying question as much as i could in plain language that you could understand. Thank you for your thought.
Again, i couldn't agree with you more on that when you made mentioned about the fact that there are always a tremendous traffic jam where ever you look in Manila. However, it wasn't because of those people with police escorts going about their business. It is because people seems oblivious of the passing cars moving about around them, in front of them and ahead of them. I was born and raised in Manila myself, lived in north america and returned after twenty seven years. But, let me tell you, i was totally taken by surprise by how much attention people have in dealing with vehicular traffic in Manila than anyone else in the world. The people just don't seem to care anymore if their gonna hit someone or someone is gonna hit them. I asked my brother once while we were in the car as to the reason why i noticed that there are very few stop signs in intersections in Manila, and his reply was, "it doesn't make any difference whether we have four, ten or even a hundred stop signs in a corner, people will still ignore them no matter what". Did you ever hear the saying that goes; "don't fix it, if it's not broken"? Well, i hate to disappoint you on this one, but, i think the traffic situation in Manila have already passed that stage, way beyond between nil and negligible. To sum it up, it is "us" people who have done these horrendous traffic mess to ourselves, we let it go on and on for decades until such time that everything was beyond repair. I was literally in tears when i saw these things around me that could have been save a long time ago, and i wasn't just talking about the traffic, but, a lot of other things in the Philippines that could have been save with just a simple "human intervention". Speaking of which, my friends and i used to go swimming behind the manila hotel when i was there. Now, that part of the ocean was nothing but muck, sludge, garbage and floating dead animals. It's a terrible thing to think that my grandchildren would never ever enjoy swimming on that part of the "used-to-be-ocean" in their lifetime. Moral story? when you get up in the morning and looking at the mirror, do you ask yourself if you have done one little honorable thing yesterday worthy of telling your kids? If there is one, then, welcome to your own preservation.
I think most Filipinos have forgotten that ALL those men and women seated in the government are there as public SERVANTS. (Yes, Mr. Politician, I am your *boss*.) But it seems that most of us have forgotten this. It is us who they should be addressing "sir" and "ma'am" and not the other way around.
If you (servants) have a meeting to attend to, leave your house early just like the rest of us so you won't hassle our appointments! Yes, we have them too. The "VIP" concept/mentality should be obliterated into kingdom come. actually it isnt just the president's entourage that have been pulling their weight around. Last year while stuck in traffic there had been a BIG SHOT who was behind me...the escorts wanted me give way. STUCK IN TRAFFIC! there was simply no room in the other lane for me to move into. of course, the escorts hit my car because i couldnt let them go through...my car has the dent to this very day.
i wasnt able to get the plates of the any of the vehicles in the convoy so i dont really know who to complain against. Erika, Some of these cars in big-shot convoys even remove their license plates so you can't identify them. With cams in phones, perhaps this abominable behavior can now be recorded and uploaded on the Internet for everyone to witness so at least their relatives recognize them. A form of people power ; ).
Here we go again talking about all the disgusting traffic inconveniences done to us by VIP security escorts. Do you really believed that motorcades by the president and some VIP people is the main reason why we have a horrendous traffic in Manila? Think again, you are absolutely "misinformed". However, let me explain this little bits of information on the subject. Presidential convoys going to and from Malacanang has nothing to do with the worst traffic snarls in Manila. Not with the amount of time the presidential motorcade spends on the road. Actually, it has nothing to do with the messy road condition we're all seeing nowadays.Consider this, whenever presidential securities have already cleared the road, it will only take about six minutes and twenty one seconds for the motorcade to reach PICC from Malacanang palace. (my own observation, cause i always see them all the time) That's the total amount of time you will be waiting sitting in your vehicle. There, is that too much to ask? You will be stuck in traffic anyway, with or without it for a very long time. Why? cause, the guy walking next to you hawking "balut", "peanuts", "banana-on-a-stick" and some other items too long to mention will be walking and running right in front of your car. And also, the people who wants to get to the other side of the divided median walking close to your car that you can literally smell their breath. It totally gives a whole new meaning about people on the road.Reminder: incidental events, places or things mentioned in this blog is based solely on my own observation and not of any other entity, persons or group of persons which are either connected or known by me.Thank you very much for your time reading this.
Yeah, that's right, tell them to take a picture of the heavily tinted vehicle without the license plate and show for everyone to see in the whole entire universe. That would be great! only if you could see the people in it.And not just a black tinted mercedes cruising at high speed on the highway.I have a feeling that this, might not be a good idea. (lol)
This is also true here in Thailand as well as in Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and parts of China. Manila only has to stop for politicians.
In contrast, Bangkok stops not only for politicians but also for the Palace and it's kin. traffic stops and people are not even allowed to cross the overpass. security is a difficult job. it really is. Your Blog is great. You should keep up the good work.
Even though GMA Network is our network rival, tha'ts only for business. We like your entry. God bless. ABS-CBN News Maraming salamat, I'm very honored. I happen to think that in some important ways, the networks are good for each other.
Do you really meant good for each other? I think what you wanted to tell them (ABS-CBN) was, "we-would-do-what-is-best-for-the-readers". In a way, when i first read about the comment made by ABS-CBN, i was totally in shock to say the least. Correct me if i'm wrong on this one sir, but, are they the same network who are connected with the "stampede"?. Of course, i wouldn't know the facts behind the incident cause i haven't gotten around reading them. To cut a long story short, people or readers in particular would take notice if one of the networks would give in to those powerful and or influential people who just did a wrongful act to another person. Let the race begin! to find out who gets the highest ratings on this one.
Alundio - What I meant was having competition is better than not having any competition. It keeps you on your toes, so that you strive to serve the public better. Then again, one can look at competition in different ways. There are unsavory aspects of rivalries, which I won't get into here.
Yes, Mr Severino, i couldn't agree with you more on this one. Knowing what the people on the other side of the fence was actually doing gives you more perspective i guess in doing what you do best and consequently learned from it. I didn't mean that you will resort to "finger pointing" of that sort when push comes to shove in your line of work. What i am trying to deliver here is that, there is one part of journalism ethics that comes to mind in giving concise, unbiased and truthful information to the public, and the word i was thinking is "fairness".
A very good example of this is, when the information has been received by your network on a breaking news regarding a shooting incident that involves a former top government official, normally, most networks will probably jump on the bandwagon to get the facts. But, since the facts are somewhat distorted to the point that no other network seem believable at this point and time, would you have gotten the real story and tell the public about it or would you rather have a "wait and see what we've got attitude"? Irregardless of whose toes you're gonna step on. I strongly believed that your own good reasoning will come your way. Please allow me to state further that, in the absence of a strong competition, no one will even think of putting journalistic integrity up a notch which, are badly needed in this day and age. Thank you for your reply on this one, i really appreciate it. (and i thought i was talking to myself here) lol I have just read an article here on GMA7 about the untimely death of De Las Alas. This was just about the state prosecutor questioning the chief of police of Makati who did the initial investigation at the crime scene. The chief made a statement to the state prosecutor that, the reason why they (the police) didn't find any fingerprint on the gun was the fact that a) the gun was not held tightly b) the gun has a smooth stainless steel and c) cold temperature in the room creates a residue of moisture on the surface of the gun. Whoooaaa!! Only one of the above mentioned criteria could affect lifting prints on the surface. Even then, a gun that has been submerged under water even for a week would still have prints on them. Whatever happened to the picture they showed and even indicated that the gun was on top of the table of Leviste around the side of the table, with the barrel pointing towards the back of the wall. Then, just the other, when they were having a re-enactment at the crime scene, i saw this male individual (could he be a cop?) trying to place the gun on the right hand of the poor guy who is trying desperately to act as the deceased. Correct me on this one please, if i am terribly mistaken but, did he (De Las Alas) sustained a gunshot wound at the back of the head, and behind his torso that goes through and through the seat? Because, from what i saw yesterday on that picture when one of the boy's of the state prosecutor was taking "the chair" out of the room where De Las Alas was presumably sitting, i did not see any remarkable trace of blood on it. I gathered perhaps, that, he took the bullet from behind. Just like the bullet he sustained at the back of the head. I don't know what to say on this one! How could a guy comfortably sitting on a chair be a greater threat to anyone? Let me tell you, i wouldn't want to be standing close to this guy while i am having a conversation on my cell phone, he might think that i was gonna hit him with my motorola razor phone and smoke me instead. Wow! only in the Philippines.
Does it really make any difference at all if people would express their personal opinion coming from other sources other than ABS-CBN? Come on now, or do i sense some "journalism breakdown" or envy from the other side. Perhaps, the other network do have some interesting topic to talk about here that readers felt they have to had their say. Remember when i mentioned in one of my entry that "we are all on this together"?. Well, this is typically one of them. If the GMA Network would give their opinion about Leviste not being in jail for killing his very good friend after his confession to the police that he did, in fact killed the guy. Would you (ABS-CBN) say so otherwise? I believed, that when it comes to unbiased information based on scientific facts and circumstances thrown out to the readers, irregardless of the source has nothing to do with network affiliations. And I thought you guys have your own "journalistic integrity" left in your blood. That comment you just did, proved me wrong. However, if you really want to talk about the guy who just killed his friend and getting away with it literally and decided that he wants to become a "Senator"! Let me know your opinion on this one, or should i say, let US know about it here in this section. Unless, of course, just the very mention of the guy's name is making your a,,,,,s pucker.
"Even though GMA Network is our rival"? Must you put emphasis on this one? We are all on this together, remember? I bet you, that you wouldn't even think about inviting Mr Severino to be a guest in your network for some personal interview. In north america, it doesn't matter whether you work for ABC News, CBS, CNN or from any other network. People here doesn't really care where you come from, what they are interested is, what do you have inside your thinking mind worthy of exposure. It would be like judging a kindergarten going to school for the first time wearing some expensive clothes, as opposed to a kid wearing some hand-me-downs but with a splendid intelligent opinions on just about every topic there is in the world. By the way, just a reminder that, i have yet to see here coming from you about any opinion that you might have on the Leviste case. I promised that it will all be "politically correct".
I am terribly sorry for not signing my name on that one that reads; "Even though GMA Netwrok is our rival,,,,," Just so you know, i don't intend to make comments here without even indicating where it came from. Thanks.
Alundio, you are so right, we are all in this together. But compeition is natural in this industry, and the fight for audience share can actually benefit viewers as long as the networks don't lose sight of our common nationality and humantiy. It's a chicken and egg situation in a way -- as the audience gets more discerning and demanding, the networks know they can't fool viewers with shoddy quality and poor information. Better TV in turn makes for more discerning viewers.
Television networks do compete, we couldn't argue on that one. They get the information from whatever sources they have at hand and get that first hand information to their viewers. Is that all there is to it? Nope, there is more to delivering news to the public than anyone could imagine, it wasn't just reading those news from a tele-promp and expect that the people watching in their living room would automatically nod and say "oh i see". But, right after hearing and seeing what they expect to see on the tube, audience will always ask themselves not just the how, where, what, when it happened but more important of all is the "why" it happened. I am totally convinced that not a lot of network would delved in the prospect of getting the "why" of the news item. Intelligent and well informed audience would always recognize if a certain network has been biased on their reporting and of course, has been intimidated by reporting any further on a particular news. I am sorry but, i would like to have some clarification when you mentioned " It's a chicken and egg situation,,," Do you mean with all honesty, that some networks couldn't even compete with the ones that have already established themselves in the market? Does that mean, your network would refuse vigorously to step ahead of them? If that's the case, don't you think it's a little absurd? Well, hook me up to the CEO here (just kidding). With all certainty, this is what most of the viewers were all looking for, a network who cannot be twisted with their reporting of the facts. Now, where do i apply again? I appreciate it really that you respond, thank you Mr Severino. You are doing one heck of a job. Keep on tracking. Just a thought.
