Friday, December 29. 2006A final ritual for a National Artist It was a spectacular goodbye for National Artist for Dance Ramon Obusan at the CCP yesterday morning, an elaborate music and dance-filled ceremony that ended with his urn on the lap of his brother Sullivan Obusan in the front seat of a hearse.  In between spoken tributes, including a loving rant from Obusan friend Elvira Go, were colorful montages of Obusan-choreographed pieces performed by current and former members of his famed folkloric group. The finale was a haunting Kalinga death ritual in which mourners screamed parting words from dark and remote corners of the theater while others wielding candles encircled Obusan's urn on stage. Then everyone escorted the urn out of the theater before waving goodbye (above). In his column in the Inquirer, Ambeth Ocampo published Obusan's unread speech at the National Artist ceremony in Malacanang. A poignant excerpt: Kung may isang buhay pa akong mabibigay sa bayan natin, susuyurin ko pa rin ang mga bundok at baybayin, ang mga ili at barrio, ang mga gubat at plaza upang patuloy na hanapin ang mga tradisyon ng katutubo natin. Ngunit iisa lang ang buhay ko--at sa ngayon ang masinsin at mapagmahal na pagbalot sa mga kaugaliang ito--at ang aking mapagkumbabang pag-abot sa mga susunod na henerasyon ng Filipino--ang tangi ko lang maiaalay. This is definitely dark days in Philippine Arts nevertheless a time of celebration for such a wonderful person in name of Ramon Obusan.
I always being left in awesome everytime I watch creation of Mr. Obusan. He will be missed. Sir Howie, thanks for creating this blog... one of a kind.. informative.. i love this stuff! More Power... One thing is for sure, we will still continue KUYA MONS's legacy and commitment of serving our country and people... I'm sorry to see a National Artist go, especially because I've always wanted to spend time to fully appreciate their works and meet them when I get older (read: finish my schooling).

If no, why not, and give ways as to how this can change. If yes, why, and how can we sustain this? You being a journalist, I know you've seen much that other people usually don't.
