Thursday, December 21. 2006Mayor's order: Don't touch the dinosaurs! I'm not implying there's a connection, but one day after I blogged about the lack of educational content in the mini dinosaur park on Roxas Blvd in Manila, name signs suddenly appeared! Unfortunately and predictably, underneath the species' identities were the names of Mayor Lito Atienza and his candidate son Ali. "A Christmas season treat" from the mayor and son is how the dinosaurs are being promoted, as if hizzoner was a ninong paying out of his pocket for merienda for the inaanak. How naive of me to expect anything else from our mayor on the eve of elections!  But my real quibble is this: the children-unfriendly "PLEASE DON'T TOUCH" signs all over the exhibit. What a cruel tease, for the dinosaurs, made out of sturdy polyresin material, appear made to touch, climb and ride. Luckily, when my son Alon and I went there to play last Sunday, no signs stopped him from climbing on the baby stegosaurus. No such treat for the many Christmas visitors to this unusual display.  Having fun before the PLEASE DON'T TOUCH signs went up. Some of the signs did make me think about the accuracy of my previous post. Okay, I may have made a mistake in identifying Tyrannosaurus Rex (I wrote that it was Carcharodontosaurus, or Donto for short) and the Triceratops (my educated guess: Chasmosaurus). But I stand by my assertion that the long-necked specimen is an Apatosaurus, formerly known as Brontosaurus. Mayor Atienza's sign says it is a Brachiosaurus. But according to various web sites including Wikipedia, the main difference between the two is that the Brachiosaurus has hind legs that are much shorter than its front legs. The creature on display clearly has legs that are about equal size, a distinguishing characteristic of the Apatosaurus.  Baywalk management did make one good move -- they transferred the menacing T. Rex herd away from the heart-warming tableau of a father's homecoming. Now little children can once again ponder when their own parents will be coming back from migratory labor somewhere in this big world, where much bigger creatures once roamed. Trackbacks

If I remember correctly, the Brachiosaurus has some sort of bone ridge on it's forehead. unfortunately, I can't tell from your picture if it does. Dinosaurs as campaign materials, very clever huh? Actually the dinosaurs are nice, but what irritates me is that politicians are getting away with this things where in they use public funds and posts their name in BIG BOLD letters, "Serbisyong bayan ni " or "Mula kay " . It's as if the money used to finance the project was taken from their own pockets.Sheesh!
I am not from Manila, but Atienza does irritate me when he drags his son along with him for publicity. (Remember Manny Pacquiao's arrival?). Just look at the sign! He and other politicians are getting every opportunity to get good, free (sponsored by the tax payers) publicity. Yeah, this is sad. It's like you owe them just because they did something that IS their job in the first place.

Heniweyz, Bracahiosaurus nga yung nandun. At least from the neck up, with the palong like feature sa ulo. pero mali nga yung legs, dapat maiksi sa likod. At mali yung T-rex. that's the most stupid mistake sa exhibit na yun. it is not T-Rex. It is a Deinonychus. yugn Velociraptor pa nilagay nila, mapapatawad ko pa na nauto lang sila ng Jurassic Park. Pero mistaking Deinonychus for a T-Rex. hayayay Paeng, It is confusing. But the original Deinonychus was about five feet tall. The ones on Baywalk are much taller, like the T. Rex.
