Invoking Pearl Harbor is really giving the pro-Arroyo tradpols too much credit.
 It was the US Naval Academy graduate in the House who immediately saw the parallels with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which took place exactly 65 years before. Rep. Roilo Golez likened the approval of Resolution No. 197 to the attack that triggered World War II: “I just realized that today, Dec. 7, is the anniversary of the treacherous attack on Pearl Harbor. It was called a day that would live in infamy. It was an early-dawn attack, just like the early-dawn treacherous Con-ass attack on the Constitution. This day will also live in infamy.” After a night of highfalutin mumbo-jumbo, Golez's administration colleagues in the House rammed through a resolution for a Constituent Assembly that would finally amend the Philippine Constitution, even without the Senate's participation. The same intent was already defeated in the Supreme Court. The treachery is the extent that Golez can compare myopic politicians with nationalistic Japan. In fact, invoking Pearl Harbor is giving the pro-Arroyo tradpols too much credit. Japan in 1941, for all its aggression, was a country with high ambitions. Attacking US forces in Hawaii was the first step in achieving a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere freed from western powers. For all the high-flying rhetoric on our shores about the national interest, most people can see the real, narrow agenda in the Philippine Congress -- the political survival of the Arroyo administration. Perhaps the more appropriate parallel is with that oblivious Roman who played the violin while his city burned. But I'd still rather hear violins than the shouting in the House. Trackbacks

Golez is a contemporary of famous Annapolis graduates Oliver North and James Webb.
Webb and North graduated from Annapolis in '68, then went to Quantico for Marine training prior to being set to Vietnam as commisioned officers while Golez became midshipman in '70. Saw a photo of Golez and North together when the latter was here to shoot a few episodes of Fox News' War Stories on the great battles in the Pacific War. Howie, you read Robert Timberg's 'The Nightingale's Song' about the Annapolis grads of '68 as well as John McCain and John Poindexter('58), Robert McFarlane('59) as well as North and Webb? The book also featured a photo of Webb stroling in the grounds of the American Cemetery in Makati in 1987, when he was Reagan's Secretary of the Navy. North lost a Senate election in Virginia in '94, while Webb was recently elected in the same seat in one of the most contested races in the November midterm elections.
