haha. i didnt know a howie severino could utter (though in asterisks) an expletive. cute.
cielo, expletive na ba kapag may asterisks? Sorry to show my clay feet! But my every-day language does not contain asterisks, hehe.
Wow. Last Monday's I-Witness about this topic was great. I'm glad that your documentary didn't turn out another ghost story feature.
I wasn't born yet when that infamous tragedy took place, but your presentation made me feel like I was actually there. It sent chills down my spines. Kinilabutan din ako. Great job! Ryan, glad you got a scare, and learned something about our recent history. I did too!
Good morning. I used to believe that marriage would diminish me, reduce my options. That you had to be someone less to live with someone else when, of course, you have to be someone more.
I am from Benin and now study English, give please true I wrote the following sentence: "Your show and stage not identify your seal gym." Waiting for a reply :-D, Soybean paste for acne scars. Last Monday's feature about the Manila Film Center was superb! I've been waiting for sooo long someone to have a feature about it. It's very informative, I really learned a lot from it, knowing that I'm not yet born when the incident occured.
Thanks Sherwin for staying up. We did it for all those who weren't born yet and for all of us who were already around but never knew the detailas because of the censorship during martial law.
i fixed myself something to eat before i took my place in front of the television. after the documentary, i realized i havent eaten anything. hahaha
i've never been pro or anti marcos. i think they did some good for this country despite the massive corruption. but what i saw in your episode made me really sad. like you sir howie, i believe that no one was left in the building... but it pisses me that imelda had the GUTS to risk the workers' safety. never mind that a good foundation is necessary for a safe building... never mind that the cement has to DRY FIRST... nakakainins iyong "bongga" mentality at the expense of the workers... Angelfire,
Sana nakakain ka na. ; > Unfortunately, there are still some who believe that being bongga is more important than human life. That's why we should never forget the lessons of November 1981.
Saguisag, may nabanggit siyang Luciano Gabani.
these are the types of documentaries i like. actually i was riding a bus to Manila when I saw this on TV. Buti na lang sira yung VHS player nila so the conductor of the bus resorted to TV. great presentation and I want to see it again (may replay ba?). Just like the other guy in this blog, kinilabutan din ako dun sa "worker trapped in cement". grabe, di ako matahimik for two days. i was in grade one when this happened but wa me kamalay-malay na may nangyaring trahedya sa manila (i'm from baguio). well martial law... hopefully, in the near future, the truth will come out...
Thanks Jomai for staying awake during the bus ride. The showrated highly so it will be replayed some time, don't know when though. Will announce when it does.
Indeed, does I-Witness have replays? on Q-TV perhaps or before Unang Hirit?
I visited this building with friends from the US a few months ago while waiting for a film to start at the nearby CCP main theatre, and we sort of felt how "sad" the building was. Too bad we weren't allowed to enter the lobby. We would have loved to take photographs and see the exhibit. Is this a privately-owned building now or are the Koreans just renting the place? Behind it, we saw the performers having their afternoon merienda. Since they saw us looking over the walls, some waved while one exposed "her" breasts (saan ba dapat ang "_", sa her or sa breasts ? ;-p). We were later told that they actually live in the building's basement. Say, what ghosts were we talking about again? (grins) Haha that's a classic tale! Must have been a culture shock, unless your friends were from the Castro in San Francisco.
You have to hand it to the Korean company renting space there -- they're making a gallant effort to make the best use of it despite everything. The building is owned by the govt and managed by the CCP.
Dylan, while waiting for the show sa CCp pwede kayong gumala sa mga exhibit dun (for free!).
Great story Howie, I just wish that your program was shown here in the Bay Area. We have some Pinoy TV, I think, on Saturday afternoons but I can't recall seeing your show. Also, I love your blog and will give you a mention on my blog in the near future.
Carl, we do air on GMA's PinoyTV, which started in the US this year. Our documentaries air on that channel soon after it airs here.
hello howie!
nice site you have here. when i was still in manila, i used to see you on tv, kaso ngayon wala na eh. anyway, this piece about the film center is great. i used to go to ccp complex with my family, maybe next time im in manila, ill go to this korean show. (im married to a korean, and ive been here in seoul for 6 years, i rarely see gays here...nandyan na kaya sila sa pinas?) can i link you to my site? Sure I'd be honored.
You probably know better, but I heard that the gay shows are popular with Korean tourists here because they have fewer inhibitions here than back home. Pinoy could get in naman ah. Well I just watched the show for the second time last night. We always conduct our meetings there. We have our own experience but I would love to debunk some claims. I think that's overrated. I went to the toilet all alone and nothing happened.

I saw your documentary about the Manila Film Center in I-witness last year. It was very informative and I would love to see it again. I want to share with you some information that I know why such an urban legend started about the Film Center. If you read the book "Inside the Palace" by Betty Day Romulo (the wife of Gen. Carlos P. Romulo) she said that Imelda's former aide (I forgot her name bec. I have read this book many years ago) died in a car accident after the completion of the Film Center. Siya bale ang kanang-kamay ni Imelda na responsible in all the affairs regarding the Film Center construction. Kung meron man na nakakaalam sa mas malalim na istorya sa trahedya nito ay siya yon but she died an untimely death. Sabi nila ito ang "karma" to those involve in the Film Center tragedy. I suggest that you read that book bec. it contains detailed accounts on the martial law era. Sana ma-feature niyo din other "white elephant" projects during Marcos regime like the Bataan Nuclear Plant. More power to your show! May you continue to give eye-opener and informative stories to the public. hi howie,
i'm doing research on the manila film center tragedy. i wasn't able to watch your documentary. is it possible for me to get a copy? thanks James, the docu is on an I-Witness DVD available at most Powerbook stores. Thanks for your interest. howie
gud pm...i saw a saksi feature on the film center just about an hour ago, and it stirred up a curiousity in me...if i were to decide, it would be nice if the center was re-opened as to what it was intended to be...sayang yung perang ginastos, so why not use it as a film center? kailangan kasing ma-revive yung filipino film industry, and opening the film center might help...
it's scary the way the supposed leaders of this country would do almost anything to put the philippines back in the map... including the construction of a building that, i think, we could do without.
and now the manila film center is in shambles. Thanks for this very objective take on the Manila Film Center. As one of the original staff that worked on the first Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) in 1981 until its spin-off entity Experimental Cinema of the Philippines (ECP), I can categorically say that the story about construction workers being buried in cement there is classic urban legend.
Yes, Imee Marcos ordered that a cañao be held before she would hold office there as the head of the newly-created ECP. But that was more because the staff was reluctant to go there to work, for fear of spirits of the dead construction workers. I wrote an article about this cañao years later for the Philippine Daily Express. During that cañao, the shamans were supposedly able to talk to the dead men's spirits. There was no mention of anyone's mortal remains being trapped in the building's cement. The spirits were reluctant to leave the building because, as in cases of sudden and unexpected death, they were confused and wanted an explanation of what happened. The shamans then helped those spirits to move on. In all the years that I worked at the Film Center, often staying on until late at night alone, I have never had a scary experience. Not even a slight spooky feeling. Well, maybe it was just that I was not attuned to the spirit world, hehe. Hi Guia, That's a fascinating tidbit about the canao. Why a pagan ritual and not the usual Catholic exorcism rites? Where were the shamans from? Is there video pr photographic documentation of that event? Thanks for adding to our knowledge about this "ghostly" place.
I was just watching a movie a while ago in "Cinema One Global" and they had a shot located in front of the Film Center of the Philippines. i remembered what our family driver told me about what happened in the building during the time it was being built. i was a kid then but i always tend to remember horror stuff. so i decided to search about it and ended up in this documentary made by the wise Howie Severino. well, i was just wondering if this episode will be played in "Sine Totoo" coz it was played way back in 2005, there was no Pinoy TV yet. :p
Michael, Thanks for your interest. I will suggest the Sine Totoo replay. The Multo ng Nakaraan DVD will also be re-issued in October.
Hi howie,
Thanks, toti Hi Toti, The docu "Multo ng Nakaraan" will be re-issued on one of the Best of I-Witness DVDs coming out by end of October 2008. Glad to know of your interest in recent history!
Hi Mr.Howie,

Nakakakilabot naman ang nangyari. All the best in everything you do Mr.Howie. Uchie Radermacher Uchie, Happy bday! Glad you spent it learning about Manila's secret history.
Hi howie! this blog's link was posted at one of the forums (http://www.motorcyclephilippines.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144265) I frequent with and this intrigued me. is there any chance that this documentary aired again?

Goodnoon Mr. Howie, Iim glad that you have this blog site because i missed this episode of your's. and now i'm making a project and i choose this story to be one of my report. from this i learned so many new fact about the MCF that billed as asia's answer to the Parthenon of the Greece. I red some stories of this tragedy and one of them was made by Danton Remoto maybe you know him because he's not so unpopular.
thanks for the more information i got from this blog!!! more power Mr. Howie Severino I'm looking forward for meeting you in person. Godbless hi mr. howie, me and my classmates choose "multo ng nakaraan" as our report. we watched this episode in iwitness dvd which my classmate bought somewhere in trinoma. we had a hard time finding on where we would buy the dvd becoause the malls near us have no copy of the dvd docu compilation. anyways, we already have it and when we watch it, this topic really caught our attention. im glad that you have this blog site. it gives us more information about what really happened. thanks for doing this documentation about the mfc.hope you'll do more interesting topics like this. godbless!
hi! kuya howie
. The only way you can truly prove that this is an urban legend is to retrieve the original blueprints for the FCP, and compare it to the submitted as-built plans. Remember that the urban legend goes that they poured concrete on top of another floor and then collapsed, thus forcing them to reduce the number of floors the building has in order to meet the project, and thus entombing the workers in the first place. Only then could you have solid evidence that this was just an urban legend and silence any conspiracy theorists.
Mr Soverino I saw the news film of the contstruction accident. It was not a very long news reel and I think Imelda Marcos was on that news footage too.
For Sure RPN 9 has the footage of the news. I am honestly positive that you can still find that news film. I saw it and I still remember what I saw It was my first time at the Film Center when I attended Showbiz Extra's 100th episode which was held at that venue. It's not so creepy when there are a lot of people and i think the positive energy that people had that day overshadowed whatever negative energy that that place housed for so long. However, the ladies toilet is a total different scenario.
its strategically spacious enough and even with the exhaust fan inside, it still was humid and hot. I could imagine energy feeding off energy creating this one warm reaction. The light bulbs were all flourescent and yet it still had that "dark" effect....when you get to the door, its cool and windy but the second you step inside the toilet its totally warm (oven talaga!) |
