Has anybody remember seeing the 1991 Kenneth Branagh film Dead Again?
We really need these kinds of documentaries.
I remember one time, we had this discussion at one bobongpinoy yahoogroup about SMOKING. And it is really alarming that people who smoke become younger and younger because nowadays, we can see that even teen-agers are trying cigarettes at broad daylight!!! How I hope that people will be alarmed of the bad effects of smoking. Give please. I like weights. You know where you stand with them. Well, sometimes you're lying under them, trying not to let them crush you, but you see, you KNOW they'd crush you if they could. There's honesty.
I am from Laos and bad know English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Home air purifiers choosing the best air purifier for home. For more information on panasonic air purifiers or to make an online purchase, you are urged to visit panasonic online website." With best wishes :), Wallace. malupit yung pagka-present ni howie severino at alam kong marami nanamang nanood sa usapin na ito.. it really is such an eye opener for us people who smoke. nonody would want have an electro-larynx..
Dear Howie,
Medyo nagulo ako coz it's the first time i've heard about the term "ear-opener". would you please expound? hector, a colleague commented on how the unusual audio, and not video, kept him glued to the documentary. He said it was not an eye-opener, but an ear-opener. ; >
yeah, got it na. kasi it's the voice (robotics) that's the issue of the documentary.
i hope that the government will also try to look into these issues. parang the advisories posted on the boxes "cigarettes can kill, or cigarettes are addictive, or dangerous to your health" are not working anymore. siguro nga, it is much better if we have those "sin taxes" implemented already. @hector. I think "sin taxes" would definitely help. Well basically, only those who can afford pay the hospital bills that chain smoking results to should have access to smoke (if they dare). I think people, especially those in poverty, have better things to spend on than their daily dose of cigarette boxes.
@howie: again sir, a very nice documentary. If i heard it right, are cigarette companies not allowed to advertise starting this month? Ronin, that's true, the ad ban on cigarette companies started July 1. They are not allowed to sponsor events either, including the upcoming Eraserheads reunion concert.
Hello everyone. Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings.
I am from Croatia and also am speaking English, give please true I wrote the following sentence: "Given concerns about future retirement funding." Thank you very much :o. Retirement planning classes. One of your best episodes. Very well presented. Very interesting and very original. The shots are great ang galing ng cameraman mo, mr. egay kudos to you again. Sana maibahagi ito sa mga mag aaral dahil interesting ang pag present mo sa issue.
Mabuhay! Maya The focus was more on lesson learning than grieving that made the story goes light. Ang fave part ko sa docu, yung tinanong ni sir Howie kung pinagbabawalan ba ng entrepreneur ng fortune ang mga anak niya. It was pretty ironic and a bit awkward para sagutin na pinagbabawal rin nga niya sa anak niya. Isa pa, nakakatawa ang marketing strategy ni sir Howie, bigla ko tuloy naisip ang marketing strategy ng mga pulinarya, it is a business after all.
Thanks Maya, appreciate it! Egay will also be happy about your feedback.
Poli, Ironic indeed. But most cigarette companies no longer bother to deny their products' harmful effect. Their pitch is now to addicts and potential addicts, those who don't care if they're killing themselves. Hi Emer,
You really influence those people not to smoke, very inspiring :-)Cool yung presentation mo. Good job. Norma Isama na ito sa Best of Howie/Sidetrip/i-witness dvd, the 2nd collection. Before we even to understand our own right to live or right to die, the docu reminds us of our right to information, right to our own choice--to live with an electro-larynx, or not.
Jasper, Thanks for the endorsement. Hope to replay this episode some time.
Good Day. No one gossips about other people's secret virtues.
I am from Moldova and too poorly know English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "But often not as i scream indeed have to deny any of them!Conan and max comprise about a red point or generation, with conan arguing filmmaking bullets to which max notes finally, but in 'acting work in an work to create scientific. The hundreds will pay sir edge, ignoring to the task efficiency. What goes it such, roginas thought to use? Marriage of materials created in furtherance of this agreement nps shall keep all 1990s, scribes, and markets in all videos and episodes resolved in the support of this result, playing without chaos, anything, noticeable daily imaginations, single events, and chase relationships." Even though people know the danger of smoking they just cannot or will not quit even if we get that *visual. They(smokers) should at least be more responsible and considerate especially when they are around people who is as intolerant of smoking as me.
I guess i'm guilty for not actually caring about them but rather acting on my pet peeve. But i made it a point to be right on my *rights*. There was this one time I was standing in line waiting for a cab at MOA when this guy stood there in line (next to me smoking) i asked him to kill the smoke but he said i have no right to ask that of him (in a public terminal) he suggested why not ask him to stay somewhere else. Well, I was dumbfounded i don't know what to say (he won and left with his girlfriend in that rain). If i were a smoker like him I think i will start to wonder why i dont see smoking ads(on tv at least). This is what actually piqued my interest and was surprised to learn that a law actually bans this. But what struck me the most is why i did not know of this earlier. It's hard to say or put the blame on the government for not disseminating info about that law because they are doing their job and people are helping too(like this docu). We just have to give it time and help(even for wrong reasons like mine) in the process of incorporating this in our "culture." I try to be civil, passive aggresive, and aggresive about this topic because there are still guys like him who needs the right reasoning knocked into his head... That said try to cut ahead people who walk while smoking- show them they your covering your face. or turn and cover when people stink of smoke (esp in an elevator); ask people not to smoke in jeeps, get that computer shop/cafe rethink their smoking policy(i think its wherethe Asian Cybergames Players for DOTA play); and try not to let moments pass-by when helpless people like that guy leave without knowing what your arguments are. I know its not right to keep the hate up but its a place to start >. we should also have healthy smokers talk about the law and teach their fellow smokers when and when not to smoke. I think it can be just as persuasive to have that concept of a responsible class of smokers. It's still a choice and they should still be heard. It's their right to smoke (kill themselves) and feel good that they are keeping their smoke to themselves.
Grabe. I was inspired watching this documentary Lalo na kay Mr. Emer Rojas. That's why I am going to make a report with him in Newswatch Junior Edition in RPN-9.
does anybody now where to buy the device used in this show...i think it is called electrolarynx...but when i go to their website...they dont have a direct company branch in the philippines....in from Q.C. i really need to now where to get one....if someone could at least give a link to other website offering the same device here in the philippines
My father is in the same scenario now. He had a hole in his throat just this year of Febraury. Sad really. But, with the help of Mr. Emer Rojas who is now the President of the Laryngectomy Club of the Philippines, he helped us in someway accepted the fact and introduced this BOSES UPOS to me. Since I cannot access Youtube.com in the office, I tried to searched for this via google and found this site! Anyway, i hope that one day I will be able to watch the video. Thank you Mr. Severino for the documentary. I know that even if I havent seen it yet, I am sure that it left a mark to those smokers around and served a lesson for everyone! Thank you.

This blog will attempt to find relevance in the exotic and the commonplace, value the undervalued, and satisfy my personal curiosity about all things that have anything to do with being Filipino. Howie Severino is a journalist, documentary maker, mentor, father, husband, patriot and pilgrim. He does two main gigs on television: I-Witness, GMA Network's pioneering documentary program, and Sine Totoo, a showcase for some of GMA's best non-fiction public affairs programming. He has also worked at, in reverse chronological order, The Probe Team (reporter), Phil. Center for Investigative Journalism (staff), The Manila Chronicle (reporter), The Journal Weekender (editor), Department of Health (speechwriter), Ateneo de Manila High School (teacher), the Philippine Embassy in Wash.
