I wasn't able to watch the documentary, but I did see the trailer for it, which may not be enough basis for my opinion. My initial thought was it was a very foolish and selfish thing to do. Jimmy would definitely have died if it was found out by the kidnappers. What then would his family do with the video? To piggyback on what you said, it's very unlikely that it would be effective in capturing their captors. Still, I hope it serves its purpose. It was worth his life.
ellaine, as what howie has discussed, siguro talagang lumabas yung puso ng pagiging journalist ni jimmy dun sa situation. being a seasond photojournalist, he knows how he can get away with the situation coz he is the master of his own gadget-the technicalities of his camera, he can use to conceal his purpose.
what's interesting is that, he really took the risk on what he did. risky enough that if he gets caught and punsihed for it, big time sya kasi he did his job. Same thing, as what have happened, big time din sya kasi he wasn't caught, and his shots got away from the hands of the kidnappers. I'm still baffled or maybe i just missed it sa news, whether there was ransom paid. I only know of the Php5million as their board & lodging (correct me if i'm wrong), but overall, i got the understanding there was none... i'm still baffled and still in curiousity here.
me too, i missed that kidnap docu and hopefully they'll show it again. thanks As i look at it,it looklikes it was a dramatic film of the KFR movie and it maybe real or not real but it show that it is possible to scared journalist as well as other prospect of the said game.
Kidnapping is the usual business of people who has no more other way around to make a quick cash.It sures make a headlines for a while but what benefits does it gaves to public?Nothing but another trauma for tourist want to visit Philippines. While no one punished for that crimes, many will probably victimized. |

This blog will attempt to find relevance in the exotic and the commonplace, value the undervalued, and satisfy my personal curiosity about all things that have anything to do with being Filipino. Howie Severino is a journalist, documentary maker, mentor, father, husband, patriot and pilgrim. He does two main gigs on television: I-Witness, GMA Network's pioneering documentary program, and Sine Totoo, a showcase for some of GMA's best non-fiction public affairs programming. For four years, Howie also reported on culture and travel in the quirky Sidetrip sa Saksi stories on the late night news. He has also worked at, in reverse chronological order, The Probe Team (reporter), Phil. Center for Investigative Journalism (staff), The Manila Chronicle (reporter), The Journal Weekender (editor), Department of Health (speechwriter), Ateneo de Manila High School (teacher), the Philippine Embassy in Wash. D.C. (writer), the Boston Common (pretzel vendor), McDonald's (grill cook), newspaper delivery boy, choirboy.
