Monday, September 3. 2007Death by hazing A UP student lights a candle at the UP law school in memory of Cris Mendez, who died allegedly in a hazing incident one week ago.  On Cris's coffin hung a slew of academic medals, including those earned in elementary school. Cris Mendez nurtured a dream that he would be somebody some day. Like many smart provincial kids with humble origins, attending the University of the Philippines would be his path to greatness. "He told us we would see him on TV some day," a high school classmate told me. He finally made his first appearance on TV when he died. As the latest hazing casualty, his death has drawn intense media coverage. At his wake in Tiaong, Quezon, Cris Mendez's hometown friends recalled that he had a slight body but a sharp intellect. One of the best students Tiaong ever produced, he was a champion debater who was known to argue against fraternity hazing. An undergraduate at UP's college of public administration, Cris was an aspiring law student from a small town, perhaps finally succumbing to a frat recruiter's pitch that he would never feel alone again on a big campus, he would always have an extended family of brods, even after he became a lawyer. A former classmate told me he warned Cris that his skinny body might not endure the blows during hazing. But Cris was known as a student leader who was not easily cowed. His luck ran out when he was delivered nearly dead by the father of a member of Sigma Rho, said to be the law school fraternity that hazed him. No one in the frat can be reached and they have virtually disappeared.
Sigma Rho alumni, however, are very visible in the corridors of power. A who's who of Sigma Rhoans here. At his funeral mass, a family spokeswoman addressed the fraternity, which did not send any representatives, "Why do you need to hurt someone to call him your brother?" The question could be asked of the entire frat culture.  Cris was buried yesterday in Tiaong, Quezon. His father, an OFW, couldn't make it home. There is nothing new under the sun.....Lenny Villa died, Chris Mendez died...and for what? Collective amnesia, the world keeps on turning, evrybody acts as if nothing happened, and these frat members will soon be in positions of power and will keep on perpetuating the system of keeping the Filipinos in their 'proper' place--which is at the bottom...of such people who belong to fraternities in Manila's elite universities...fascism is made.

At isa pa, sa sarili natin dapat simulan ang pagbabago. wag natin sisihin ang gobyerno, na wala n ngang ginawang maganda, sisihin pa natin. eh di mas lalo lang sila ngdeviate. masasagot lahat ng panalangin yan mga bro. at simulan ntin ang pagbabago sa sarili. dahil kung lahat tayo magbabago patungo sa mas magandang pagkatao, naniniwala ko na susundan din tayo ng karamihan. it's just a matter of believing. dont be pessimistic on the issue. kung nde man sila managot sa batas eh may diyos pa rin na huhusga sa kanila. kaya wag na magsisihan. okei?

Kadalasang inaalala ang mga namatay sa marahas na paraan sa pag-ukit ng kanilang pangalan sa bato. Maaaring malabanan ang paglimot kung palaging gugulantangin ang ating mga mata ng mga pangalan ng mga estudyanteng nalagas ang buhay dahil sa mga kriminal na kapatiran. Bakit walang nangangahas sa buong ka-UP-han na magtayo ng pader na maglalaman ng lahat ng pangalan ng mga estudyanteng pinatay ng mga sangganong samahan? Malilimutan ba natin ang kanilang karahasan kung sa bawat araw na papasok tayo sa Palma Hall ay makikita natin ang talaang naglalaman ng pangalan ng mga biktima at ng mga samahang bumawi ng buhay nila? Sa halip, ano ang nakikita natin sa UP? Ang nakikita natin ay ang mga daan at silid-aralan na nagbabandila sa mga donasyon ng mga organisasyong kriminal. Papurihan ang mga pumapatay at kalimutan ang mga pinaslang. Ito ba ang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas ng mga nangangalandakang iskolar ng bayan?

If i am the the President of the Republic or the Chief justice of the supreme court,i will order the PNP to hunt all the member of that fraternity group in order to catch that evil member.Tiyak na kakanta ang may kagagawan nyan kung ayaw nilang habang buhay silang lahat nakakulong.Lalo na ang mga iggiterong anak mayaman na ayaw nilang natatalalo sa talino ng skolar o anak ng mahirap.Sa totoo lang hindi lang sa UP nangyayari ang ganyan kahit sa mga unibersidad sa probinsya ay uso rin ang ganyan dahil ang mga demonyong kasapi kahit saan gusto makapatay.
Jailed all of them is the solution for that.Justice will never take place if the law enforcer are corrupt and weak. somebody died violently, no autopsy report by the coroner, no immediate police investigation (no press release from the authority of any action) and from my perspective it didn't matter the circumstances. this is where the country's justice system still have to take another hard look at itself.

Look, there were no investigation occur, there's no outbreak of silence or any report from the police. It only means that they were being paid by this high-flyers frat.
And the things is that, this frat will never be ban and continually be outrageous and abuse innocents. When I heard the news about Cris, I remembered the unresolved cases of frat hazing deaths before. Even though I don't know Cris and I'm from a different school, I still sympathize with his family and friends. Like Cris, I am also an active student and organization member who dreams big and aims to becoming 'somebody' someday. But Cris lost all his hopes because of that shameful and evil fraternity.

But the greater tragedy is that he died to be part of something he did not truly believe in. And at the end of the day there are so many who will follow, knowing the risks, but lusting after the promise. An easy pass through law school; high grades from your brods who are profs; and a job in a prestigious law firm coddled by partners who are brods. Indeed this might have been his fate, to be part of the "mafia" and look down on you barbarians. But alas there's many a slip btwixt the cup and the lip.
Why do people join frats if not for the glorious Filipino tradition of palakasan. Clearly, the price is never high enough. A few years back, a similar neophyte of Alpha Phi Beta, Alex Icasiano died of hazing. I wonder what happened to his case? Will his case suffer the same fate as Chris?

These deaths continue to happen each year. Each time, it gets forgotten by the public and the only ones who remember still are the families they left behind. For once, I wish the media won't stop pursuing these kind of issues until it gets settled and justice is served. When the media starts to lose interest and finds a new story, the public does the same. If they keep the issue alive, their audiences will not succumb to letting it pass and go on their ways like its just a mere part of life.
Lives are needlessly thrown away on a regular basis, it just numbs the mind.

How many more young people will suffer the same faith as that of Chris Mendez of UP along with other victims of Frat Hazing? As of now most of these culprits are left unpunished by the law. The government and also the UP Administration should wake up now. They took the lives of these young people in a snap not to let them fulfill their dreams.

S = Maglingkod sa kapwa estudyante at guro. Pangalawang tanong ko "meron bang hazing sa inyo, bakit me namamatay". Sagot nya, meron. Bakit kelangan me ganun? Sagot nya sakin naging tradisyon na yun noon pa kaya lang nagkakaroon ng namamatay sa initiation ay dahil sa ibang frat na pabaya. Malalim ko man pinagisipan hindi ko padin maintindihan kung bakit kelangan pa ng ganun. Tradisyon? Saktan ang taong gusto na maging miyembro ng organisasyon nyo. Hindi ko rin naman makuhang magimbot sa kanila dahil magaganda ang layunin nila sa aming unibersidad tumulong sila sa mga estudyante wala akong nabalitaang gulo na pinasok nila di tulad nung ibang org dun, puro gulo. Siguro depende narin sa papasukan mong org talaga. Siguro ang kay Chris Mendez ay maling organisasyon. Tama ang tanong ng iba. Hanggang kailan? There has been a lot of news about student dying by hazing in different fraternities. Is is a known issue, it is not a secret. What i do not understand, why are there still student joining the this Fraternities with hazing initiation. First of all, the Fraternities themselves contradict the meaning of the word Fraternity, one of the biggest irony in my opinion... 2nd you can be somebody without the help of Fraternity... Fraternity is over-rated... its has no difference with gangs of lowly and unlawful subhuman beings, like those people who have hurt Dindin Palma, they are basically the same.
The solution to his problem is not from the goverment or the school administration... the solution is with the student... nobody should join Fraternities, let the present members die with it... let it rot... anyway... it is just one big bull... Unless the concept of Fraternity be overhauled, to my humble opinion, Fraternities are just waste of time, money, effort and most of the time, lives. if we really want to do something about this, among many other things that plague humanity, GREAT sacrifices will have to be made. Thousands upon thousands need to die, including their children, and afterwards the mere utterancde of words like "frat" or "omerta" or anything else that detracts from exclusive worship of the State must be criminally punishable by death. At some point people won't even bother reviving these barbaric traditions because there is nothing to revive: their memories are subjected to the useful kind of amnesia, one that prevents the recurrence of human drama instead of repeating it.
Seriously, we all should read more books, the solutions are RIGHT THERE (Nineteen Eighty Four). If we advance in science far enough, our neurologists can also remove the need for humans to achieve hormonal balance through sex, by removing the need for it altogether, so that we can devote all our energies into conquering other nations so as to perpetuate our healthy society, on top of solving the population problem, with our children carefully designed and manufactured in strict quality and quantity control that the imperfections of the natural womb can never, ever give us. Sounds like you wanted to create a robot to conquered other nations.Better we do not have neurologist or scientist that will makes us all regret of their inventions.Your opinions work very good in NK(North Korea) does it makes them specials?Your answer could be yes,due of the fact that they are a threat to the lives of mankind,but there is no reason for them to pose a threat if they had everything they desired.
In this case of death in hazing,what would you do if this happened to one of your children? ...in a country like Philippines justice is more slow than a walk of turtle. first off, there are already 80 million Filipinos, I don't want my loins to add to that...but for the sake of the argument, assuming that i do and he gets beaten to death, all the more will I dedicate my life to societal engineering, because that's the only way to truly abolish frats and secret societies: If people don't even have a word for it, it does not exist. Period.
If that fails, then I'd follow my Faith...which means I'll fight my way still into political power and settle for doing it the Catholic way and have them end up like the Templars. I mean, if the Church was able to do that with the rich and powerful and martyred Templars, then there's always hope. i was just wondering why all the frat groups do the hazing...you have to paddle or hurt or have sex with them first before they recognize you as a member..i think that frat groups are a bunch of .....Why they cant stop them? because they have a powerful and popular parents that they can rely on? they say brotherhood but they will kill you...its ridiculous..

What's more frustrating is that there are people who actually blame Cris for what happened to him. A fraternity member even blogged and said that "Mendez took a risk and lost." There's also this rumor around peyups.com about a law professor who said that those who are anti-hazing are those who don't really understand the fraternity traditions.
It angers me that these people are trying to defend or even justify Cris's death. Yes, it was not intentional but intentionally inflicting pain on someone for the sake of "brotherhood" is simply illogical. I am sorry to say this.. Cris Mendez knew what he was getting into. He knew there is hazing when one joins a frat (like Sigma Rho). He knew some guys have died due to hazing (Lenny Villa, Alex Ycasiano, etc). He knew that frats engage in rumbles and it could be fatal (Dennis Venturina, etc). His death could have been avoided (by not joining). I am really really sorry for his parents (and siblings) who probably didi not know he was joining a frat. They are the biggest victims and most greatly affected.
Nino Calinao's case is different. He was a non frat member, a bystander who was killed in a frat rumble which he had nothing to do with. A case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. This case cries for justice. It's not the same as the cases of students who voluntarily join fraternities knowing all the risks. No one will die of hazing if no one joins them. uhhh...so by your logic of assumed risk, everytime women wear miniskirts, it's completely legal to rape them, because it's an assumed risk that men will molest them if we can see their legs?

You should contact NBI,PNP and the media.Media could be a big help to solve many crimes but that if the justice system is serious to punished the offenders no matter if they are part of their brotherhood.It could be Dr.Cruz and his son or daughter can tell the whole truth,so NBI or PNP should rely on what the statement that Dr.Cruz would reveal and i hope Dr.Cruz is man enough to tell the truth,if not he is one of the killer doctors our country had that should be put to death.

A lot of students remain silent cause they don't know who to trust. Personally I wish I could help pero baka ilaglag ako ng media at mamaya na lang i'll be one of those badly concealed/pixelated informers. Common knowledge na sa mga estudyante dito sa amin kung sino-sino yung mga miyembro or at least kung sino yung mga officers, but the media men we see roaming around keep asking not only the wrong questions but the wrong people. Nakikita ko pa na pumapasok yung mga wanted na estudyante na as far as I know may subpeona na at provisionaly suspended kuno. Unfortunately yung mga nakikita kong camera men/ pulis etc. are standing in the opposite end of the hallway. Ano, kakawayan ko pa sila at tatawagin para mabugbog rin ako ng di oras ng mga fratmen-- my schoolmates, classmates and orgmates? ANg dami ko ring prof na Rhosig. Sila rin dapat yung mga interviewhin and let's see if they denounce frat violence. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. Check the freedom wall btw in the college of law sa tabi ng library. Very revealing about the students' state of mind re this issue.

We should mobilize the youth into becoming more responsible and critical citizens of this country instead of lining them up as punching bags. We do not mold future leaders by taking away their right to live and stripping away their potentials. Fraternity and sorority members, let us prove them wrong by serving society and fighting the real demons of the prevailing oppressive structure that has tolerated hierarchy and abuse to the weak. Break away from the tradition! Rebel for the worthy cause! If we are to die, it is better to pass away as heroes and not just victims… Let us recall the victims of political killings who had served the people selflessly and fought courageously for till the very end. These are those we should look up to and not the known frat or soro alumni in their comfy seats in the administration. This is exactly how I feel after reading the comments from this blog knowing that 15 years ago during my resident days at UP, I joined my fraternity. Let's call the crime for what it is... This is not rich against poor nor this is a crime by every UP fraternities. This is a murder by the members of the SIGMA RHO FRATERNITY and not by the entire fraternity system. Fraternities always make the headlines for rumbles, hazing and death and rightfully so beacuse these groups are not what the fraternity is all about. The fraternities engaged in such activities are GANGS who disguise themselves as Greek-lettered blinded brotherhood. There are however, a handful of fraternities that will mold an individual to the best person that he can be, who will guide them towards the right path and who will share their principles and move towards a common goal, and frankly, if you are somebody looking from the outside, you will never understand the bond that we share. To the Filipino public, the media group, the friends and family of Chris Mendez, the only way to get the truth out is to pressure people in power who are accountable to the Filipino public. Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, Sen. Franklin Drilon and Sen. Edgardo Angara, among others should be pressured to let the truth be known and believe me when I say (from somebody inside the fraternity system), that by now these SIGMA RHOAN Senators, know the exact details of what really happenned and that their voices will be heared and followed within the Sigma Rho fraternity. Let these senators be accountable to tell the truth and expose their fraternity brothers or feel the wrath of the grieving Filipinos. The justice system should be on trial... not the fraternity system. How can you put the justice system into trial if itself is the one has the right to make wrong right and the right make it wrong?

Again, we are losing track of the crime. The wrongdoing is not the knowledge of fraternities nor its mere existence. With this argument, it is as if you are even blaming the victim because he attempted to join the fraternity. The fault lies not on Chris Mendez for joining, but on the hands of the ths SIGMA RHOANS who hastily assaulting and murdering an innocent soul. When a drunk driver hits an innocent by stander, It is not the fault of the beer company for making a legally acceptable drink nor it is the fault of the car manufaturer for building a mode of transportation. Let us call out the Sigma Rhoan senators to let the truth be known and Justice be served. personally, i think frats and soros are not bad, its the hazing part really that's wrong. I agree not all fraternities are bad but when the fraternities you belong at committed crimes either are not actually involved in committing a crimes you are indeed suffer the consequences your mother fraternity brothers did because you belong and the same brotherhood,same faith,goal and kept the secret of hazing.

now, my two cents: the knee-jerk reaction of several people to what happened is to call for the complete abolition of the fraternities and sororities in the Philippines. that, i believe, will be an impossible task, because it goes against the most basic of our laws, which is the Constitution. The Bill of Rights specifically recognizes the freedom of association, which means that anybody can form and join any group they wish, as long as the purpose of said group is not contrary to law, morals, and public policy. do fraternities and sororities fall under that classification? no, they don't. the purpose of said organizations - to build ties and networks, make friends, create support groups, conduct outreach programs, contribute to their members' growth - are not per se illegal. hence, they cannot be banned outright. what we need to change is the CULTURE of [most] these organizations.. starting with the culture of violence that is so pervasive in their initiation rights. it is possible to build camaraderie and rapport without the physical beating. i cannot fully understand the justification for their rites, but having friends in fraterntites, the reasons they have given me barely suffice. on the other spectrum, and i might get berated for this, is that for the initiation to even commence, there must be a neophyte - an applicant so gung-ho as to be willing to go thru hazing, someone who knows the risks but decides that it is far outweighed by the expected rewards. this is who chris was. what was he doing at the rites? he voluntary subjected himself to hazing. yes, he didn't sign up to die. i know that. but part of me thinks that all of this could have been avoided if he didn't give in to peer pressure and believed that his own brilliance could have landed him a spot in Villaraza, ACCRA, Quisumbing-Torres, or Sycip. and so, that would be the next logical step - for people to simply stop joining frats, or frats with a known culture of violence. for people to believe that they can get by solely on merit, on the basis of their own diligence and hard work, and that they don't need to undergo hazing rites for doors to open for them. while we cannot abolish these organizations legally, we sure can let them die a natural death. we can let their numbers dwindle until the old boys' club is no more, or until they change the ways of their organization. we can start the change from the outside. Masakit mang sabihin, pero wala ding mangyayari sa kaso ni Chris. Sa dinami dami na ng mga biktima, iilan ba ang napatawan ng parusa? Sobrang kupad na nga ng hustisya sa Pilipinas, pumapanig pa ito sa mga makapangyariahan. Hindi matitigil ang fraternity-related violence habang may fraternity. in any case, di kaibigan ang kailangan nya when he joined, naniniwala ako na kaya sya sumali is yung 'IDEA' na pag member ka ng fraternity madali ka makakapasok sa society ng mga elitista o politician. it is all about CONNECTION. he has so many friends who loved him, good grades, family that supports him, ang naiisip ko lang na rason para maconvince syang sumali sa 'brotherhood' is yung ngang pagkakaron ng connection. inisip nya siguro na kakayananin nya ang initiation, at inisip nya sigurong hindi naman sobra ang magiging initiation, pero di nya naisip na may mga taong 'hayok sa karahasan', tuwang tuwa na makitang may naghihirap sa kanilang harapan, mga sadista! i just feel sorry for him, he is so young. he's only 20 years old. malayo pa mararating nya. NAKAKAPANGHINAYANG! I hope we will all continue to ask for the truth in what really happened, to call for reforms from the fraternities, and to demand true and lasting changes.

I was shocked to hear in the news about the death of a promising man. Much worst, is when I saw a segment in Jessica Soho reports last saturday, wherein neophytes are beaten black and blue yet, they still want to join fraternities. Why?? a shocking question, WHY???. The reason is to join a group that would "protect" and "help" them in times of need. For me violence begets violence. What the neophytes received through initiations now, they will do it to their future neophytes. So this senseless, if not ruthless system will become a cycle. This is a rotting system that is creates that its ok to be violent but with "justification" that they will protect you. My view is that we have to provide solution to the problems at hand. I think, in most interviews that i saw, people who join fraternity or sorrority groups purpose is to belong to a group. Why not create a group with civic senses (ie volunteer firefighting among others) with the benefits of that of a fraternity, without the hazing but the proper training. I think this would lessen senseless deaths. Thus it will also produce civic-minded people. I think with the creation of this kind of organizations in universities and colleges, would help lessen people joining violent fraternities. Provide the students with choice. I think they join fraternities because they have no choice, in order to belong to a group with "benefits" is that they join violent fraternities. Provide this young minds with a choice. A choice wherein they could help their communities by joining a non-violent groups or join a violent with hazing fraternity group and God know's that you might end up seeing him earlier that your time. Many dreams has been shattered. Many lives has been wasted. The fraternity/sorrority violence must end. With the creation of alternate groups and its proper desimination, I think people would stop joining violent frats. then with the decling number of people joining violent frats would reform themselves. Thus we provide a part solution to the problem.

i strongly condemn hazing, but based on experience and observation, 'brods' really do have this extraordinary bond that tie them together. it's not something you see in ordinary organizations or groups. it's a relationship that you would expect from your best friend, instead of someone whom you've known for only a month. they attribute it to their process of intitation as well as the culture within the frat, so much so that i think their process will never actually undergo any significant change. Whatever their reasons or logic behind their hazing traditions it doesn`t fit to a broadminded civilized people.Only stupid,idiot,barbaric evil minded individuals would done deadly hazing to someone who want to becomes their fellow brother or sister in that associations of criminals.I concluded that all the fraternity are evil criminals for they shared the same guilty verdict and becomes a member of professional criminals.

Yes initiation and hazing promotes bonding, nothing can prove that more than the "van doos" where brothers will take the bullet for other brothers since the First War and now in Afghan, and even with this brotherhoood of brotherhood, no fatality. What a total wastefull violence. I am not talking about Fraternities as it is for it was established by Americans in good faith (and a bit of mischeif). Hazing as the main ingredient of Fraternity "initiations" has defeated all possible human logic. We are a people hungry for violence and sought outlet from cockfighting to movies and now this - violence in different forms manifesting on different strata and levels but violence just the same. Filipinos are violent people. And the moment we get a slack on the leash we go for it then justify it with twisted reasons.
If it is up to me, Fraternities or ANY organization that perpetuates any form of hazing or abuse, physical or phsycological must be banned and be punishable by law. This must be enforced with extreme conviction and not just on paper. "Ungguyan", "Lokohan" - whatever you call it, it is STILL HAZING. According to the article his former classmate warned him not to join bcoz of his skinny body that might not endure during the initiation but he did not mind it. Second, i believe that he knows what he is doing and what will happen to him if he pursue to join the org. bcoz according to the article again his close friends and relatives said that he is bright student of UP and there's no reason for him not to forsee the consequences that might come up to him after the initiation.
My point here is we can not blame the org. or even the recruiter but himself bcoz his right to say "no" was not encroached by the said recruiter. I urge the the people who gaves their comment about this incident that before we give our oppinion we need to trangulate the situation that we can not become bias but rather become fair square in each angle of the situation. i am just as saddened and enraged as everyone here over cris mendez's death. there's just no need to type in all caps or place a million exclamation points or, as howie pointed out, to curse and call people names. we should all do something more concrete than just sympathizing.. we should join in the fight against this culture of violence, and not just in the initial weeks, but until significant change has been effected.

i don't think there is a law penalizing the pledges/neophytes who enter those associations, so please stop blaming the late mr. mendez. what i know is that hazing which results to physical/psychological/mental injuries or death to a pledge/neophyte is a crime. criminal intent is irrelevant. the act itself constitutes a crime.

pero para sa lahat tama na poh at wag na kayong sasali sa mga gantong walng kwentang organisasyon,, sisrain lang poh nila ang buhay natin,, matulungan poh tayong lahat pigilan ang pagdami ng mga inosenteng nilalang na sumasali sa mga fraternities magtulungan tayo at baguhin na natin ang mundo,, panimula sa pag sugpo sa mga organisasyong ganyan! Exactly. Whether or not the senior had criminal intentions matters less. What is important is the criminal act of killing the victim through bludgeoning.
This is the extent of frat lunacy. There should be legal reprimands for hazing and frat in general. Society just can't afford having groups enforcing and running their own fell ideas of brotherhood. There must be moderation. Personally, I'd rather prefer banning of frats. Rest in peace Cris Mendez.
