Other Virginia-Philippine connections are:
1) William Atkinson Jones, the Congressman who worked with then-Philippine Commissioner to Washington Manuel Luis Quezon to secure the passage of the Jones Act of 1916, which pledged Philippine independence in twenty years upon establishment of a 'stable government.' 2)Virginia-born NY Congressman Francis Burton Harrison who became Governor General of the Philippines from 1913-21. The only other American(apart from Douglas MacArthur)to earn the devotion of the Filipinos during his term, and was subsequently buried in Manila's North Cemetery after dying in 1957 in NJ. 2 1/2: West Virginia Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller used to be a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines back in the 60s. Virginia Tech is not located in Fairfax County : ) Virginia Tech is located in south western Virginia and Fairfax is Northern Virginia. I live in Fairfax, Virginia
Thanks Carl, Will correct it, although I did see some accounts that said Virginia Tech is in Fairfax County.
you were right howie. Fairfax,VA and Virginia Tech (Blacksburg,VA) are in the same State which is VIRGINIA. Fairfax is a county in VA. I live in Fairfax too.
You're right Carl, VT is in Blacksburg. But you might have forgotten that VT and UVA share a bldg in Alexandria, which is in Fairfax County, that serves as a satellite branch for both schools.
Actually, I did not forget about the other campus locations. I see VT daily as I ride the Orange metro line : ) My heart and prayers go out to all involved and may GOD please help us all to love a little better.
Number 3: York County, VA-born Littleton Waller of the U.S.Marine Corps. In the aftermath of Balangiga, Brig.Gen.Howling Wilderness Smith ordered Waller to wage war on the island's civilian population including 10-year old boys--to his credit, Waller countermanded Smith's directive--but that did not save him from court-martial later.
Peace be with her...I hope that it was an accident that took her life..Sana walang foul play sa isyung ito...Kung nagkataon, nakakahiya naman talaga..tumulong at nagmahal na nga yung tao eh, pinagnakawan pa o inabuso...Wag naman sana...
It is a shame that an incident like this adds to the tarnish the philippines has been receiving as a dangerous place. But irrespective of the circumtances of Julia Campbells death, it is irresponsible to venture off alone during any hiking adventure. it was first thought she had fallen, if she had someone accompanying her, they could go for help. If she was in fact robbed, a group of people is not looked upon as easy prey for opportunists. A single woman walking alone in a desolate place is just inviting trouble from criminal elements looking for an easy picking. Common sense should always come into play when planning any trip into the unknown. She did not deserve to end up this way and I hope the Peace Corp. excercise some lessons learned in making sure their people communicate their plans and have the means to be contacted in the event of an emergency, and more importantly don't go wandering off alone. The peace corp, in my mind, bears some responsibility for this incident, they as an organisation should have not allowed her to go on this trip without contingencies. They have their own security co-ordinator in country, did he or she not extend memorandums to personnel on good practice of personal security. I know every other organisation working abroad do this. It was a preventable incident made by stupid decisions. I hope the people are caught and convicted and the family of Julia sue the ass off the peace corp for their negligence on not implementing security measures of world reknown practices whilst working overseas or in difficult terrain locations.
Its really sad to hear all this kind of news these days, from north to south, east to west deaths everywhere. I spend my secondary education near the banaue rice terraces,- one's among the 8 wonders of the world. its a breathtaking landscape, peace loving people- not refering to the NPA's. Im hoping that there's no such negative impact with this incident to our country, im hoping the autopsy will probe no such killing happens. Every thing happens for a reason........... Its either we gonna learn from it or we gonna go back for it. If there's no occupation to Iraq, the horrible violence up there doesn't exist, If the gun laws in the U.S a bit more stricter, then the shooting should not have happen..
It is so sad and so disgusting to think that a very nicelady like Campbell will end up dead in the land of paradise or parasites? It`s a coincidence that something more worst happened in Virginia Tech. otherwise it will give a very bad effect to Philippines tourism and adds to unsolved extra judicialkillings.Virginia Tech.scenario only show that not even in USA is safe to go to school or live at.USA maybe rich nation but they have also problems that exist anycorner of this world.
Insane people are so dangerous to controlled especially if they are armed with guns so do the rapist or killers who run around the country and victimize innocent, alone individuals that didnt know how dangerous to travel alone especially in a place you are not familiar with the people. My deepest sympathy to Campbell`s family as well as to the victims families of Virginia Tech.Shooting.May that incident wake up everyone minds especially those who are responsible for the safety of everyone. May God burn up this evil planet soon, and makes it a new heaven where no more evil people exist or why God don`t just killed the devil so there is no more temptations that ruins mankind as well as animals. Why God can not help us solved the problems this planet earth has.God must end this evilness if He really loves mankind as well as friendly animals. When God will kill devil evil lucifer, when no any humanbeing alive to witness that incident. God please bring justice to this evil world.Amen. God's perfect will is to save all mankind, men is to kill mankind... whatever decision - good or bad, it is in the heart and mind of men and that's not God's responsibility but totally accountable to men. If we point our 1 finger to other, 3 FINGERS point to us... we must UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS....
My deepest sympathy to the family of Julia Campbell. It's avery heartbreaking news for us Filipinos especially for us the OFWs here in Hanoi, Vietnam. Sana mahuli sana yung taong may kagagawan nyan.
Anonymous 2 In behalf of my family here in Paris, France, we condoled to the family of Ms. Julia Campbell. I hoped that she would be given justice by Philippine government. Thank you very much for all the cares and love that you have given to my fellow filipinos. And for Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales, you should admire Julia because she did a good job for my fellow filipinos not blamed her for walking alone in a deserted place, How about you Mr. Secretary of Justice, what you have done for my country? We felt sorry for the family of Ms. Campbell for such rude comment.. Desole .
I did not get a chance to see Mr. "Injustice" Sec Raul Gonzales' comments about Ms Julia Campbell. But for sure and I believe with you Mr. Joselito Reyes-this old, old, old, man has nothing good to say---pati mga babae "binabanatan nya", he always have similar comments for Kris Aquino and "Nicole"...hindi kaya insecure si Mr. "Injustice" dahil mas magaganda sila sa kanya???
Raul Gonzalez is GMA's court jester--without the funny hat will the bells and the mock scepter....
Uyon ko s uban nimong gisulti.. As a respect to the family of Ms Campbell the justice secretary should opt not to talk offending words if he only comments about the way the victim travels on the supposed tourist site.. IT IS INAPPROPRIATE ESPECIALLY THAT SHE IS A VISITOR AND PEACE VOLUNTEER. SHE DESERVES RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING.
No wonder Philippine government has gaining more and more of no respect worldwide. A higher official like Mr. Raul Gonzalez doesn’t help the cause either. Please don’t tell us because you are having a dialysis. Mr. Raul Gonzalez you are insensitive and irresponsible, part of the cancer of once a great Asian country, Be ashamed of yourself, a disgrace to fellow Filipinos back home and abroad. An apologies to the family of Ms Julia Campbell and the citizens of the Philippines. Resigning from your post is not a bad idea either.
I guess Mr. Raul Gonzales has now reached the stage of scenescence. Mr. gonzales, you are so ungrateful!!!Dont you realize that maybe Julia was walking alone because she was just so trustful of our fellwos? Her acts manifested the purity of her heart. I'm glad I got the chance to work with you Julia..You left us good memories that will live forever in our hearts...and for sharing you life with us, thank you so much, you are lucky enough to have lived life to the fullest with a purpose.
My condolences to the family of Julia. Anonymous
Kami handa na.God is watching us from a distance. Please pray that Jesus Christ will comeback soon.God loves you.Amen. ***second round ***
HE! HE! HE! MARAMI PONG SALAMAT muli.. our deepest condolences to the campbell family...
but raul gonzales is simply telling is somewhat true.. somebody has to do that so that we will all learn.. painful or not.. im sorry to tow reality.. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the the family of Julia Campbell.
I read the news about this horrendous crime committed on Julia who has given so much to the people of my country of origin. She doesn't deserve this. Not a bit. It was heartwarming to know the amount of charity work she has achieved in such a short period of time to make the lives of people better in these poor communities. But at the same time it was heartwrenching to know that her life was cut short by a mongrel lurking in the mountains of Banaue. I am personally outraged about this senseless & despicable act. I am also stoked by the comments of Mr. Raul Gonzales that she was partly to blame for this tragic incident. What a goose! It's a reckles thing to say coming from a cabinet member. It's adding insult to her already grievng family. Julia will be always be remembered as a special person who has touched the lives of so many people. Our prayers are with Julia's family. May Julia rest in peace. Alex Sydney, Australia Let me start by extending our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Julia Campbell.
That said, I guess there is really nothing that can take back what happened to this resolute model of selflessness and benevolence. I'm sure that Ms. Campbell's family would agree with me when I say that this is clearly an outrage. But again, I do not believe that the general public or the entire country should be held liable for this tragedy. After all, these things happen everyday - yes, sadly, even to good hearted people. Ms. Campbell came to our islands on her own accord - fully understanding the circumstance that she’ll be facing here, that is of course, I take that this was briefed to her before she accepted the project. I condone the senseless violence, if it would've been proven that her misfortune has indeed been perpetrated by any particular individual or group. I would support any plans to bring her killers to justice – with whatever means necessary. As I said, I fully understand that bad things happen to good people everyday – but it doesn’t mean that we all should just leave things that way and wait with all hope that someone would make the difference. This brings me to my point which is – we as a society should be resolved in providing substantial security for ourselves. I believe that at this time and age in our nation’s grim chapter, we should put this matter in our own hands by actively being involved to each others welfare. I mean let’s face the fact that we will probably never see, not in this lifetime, the day where government, specifically the judicial branch (including the officers of the law) would be discharging their sworn duties within acceptable performance levels. So, until we realize this fact – the sacrifice of the innocent will continue to taint our motherland red. Just want to extend my condolences to the Campbell family. I'm a a concerned citizen. I can feel the same way with her situation in a foreign land. I salute her courage and has the heart of compassion towards my fellow filipinos. Not sure of danger facing ahead. It's her time to be with her Creator God. I hope it was an accident not a criminal act of evil posses person. Our country considered as "One of the christian nation in south East Asia". But what is the role and the influence of the churches? Mga kapatiran "Gising". Don't be so religious and dogmatic in your our religious comfort zone do something to help your fellowmen especially pray what God wants you to do. "Love your neighbor as you love yourself". Go and preach the real Gospel of peace of Jesus Christ." to every one.

Philippines is a christian country with mix of pagans, buddhism, muslim ect....Yes crimes still takes place anywhere anytime and it is not only happen in Philippines but around the world. As a filipina i am one of embarrassed and feel disgusted about this crimes commited of that evil people living there in Banaue, are they really filipinos or pretend to be one.Philippines is invaded by many criminals or international terrorist. There are so many of them that do not like americans men or women and that makes any english speaking people an easy prey.I`ve visited northern luzon as well as southern luzon, and visaya.I can sense that there is many of residence do not like white or black english speaking people for what reason could be the wars in Iraq or the USA policy. Yes i was glad i can used tagalog as a languages to communicate with them well. Many i found out they do not like americans because of their policy and war lovers attititude towards other nation.Chinese,Vietnamese,Northkoreans,Iraqis,Iranians,Russians,Europeans do not likes USA,UK,.That makes the english speaking people a target. I dont think that killers is filipinos ,for me he is evil citizen.Julia Campbell killers could be that evil terrorist, immigrant, asylum, refugee or drugdealers living in Banaue afraid of getting detected of their wrong doing..Philipines Government should not accept any criminal people as a filipino citizen but declared them as evil citizen. Please there is so many of them pretend to be filipinos but they are evil citizens of this planet earth, that is why they done evil things.Evil people no matter how many times you baptized them, they are still evil.I do believe that everyone of us is really responsible for our safety no matter what corner of the world we are at...yes english speaking people is at great danger because of its bad reputation marred by wars that really doesnt makes sense at all just killed a lot of innocent people and makes many nation crazy.Dont wonder why a SouthKorean went on killings at Virginia Tech he is one of USA residence but he simply hates americans or mankind. He is crazy but yes he live in USA.Crazy criminals are all over because of many drugs that used by many people.Illegal drugs could never be eradicate when the people who supposed to stop it, is the one run and controlled it.That is like chasing the winds.Julia is not the only victim of evil crimes that is why Julia family has no reason to feel bad on filipino people guess they understand what is going on in Philippines than the filipino people itself. To be on the wrong place and the wrong time that could lead anyone to death.Philippines Government should gave warnings to all coming tourist to be vigilant and entered at your own risk because Philippines is not a safe place anymore not even to media or journalist. That is the fact about Philippines, and the Government should not deny it wether it will promotes tourism or decline the coming of tourists.Only the braves risk their lives and Julia is one of them.Yes Julia is not afraid of any,and she probably entered Banaue with out thinking that place is not the same where the people know her in advance that she has a good reputation even she is from hated country USA.Americans knows not all people living in Philippines are filipinos because even in USA is many intruders wanted to illegally entered their country. If i were Georges W.Bush i will ordered the USA air forces to bomb Banaue so the residence there will give up that evil killers...but maybe oneday all of you just will be surprise...if that area will be bombed just like Sulu or Iraq. Philippines has many evil, drug addict, terrorist criminals just like USA but USA also has a hard time to solves the cause of it.Policy has to be change and respect for every nation rights should be highlighted no matter if it means losing their rich oil supplier. Then peace can be granted for everyone,if not,it will be Rest In Peace for all.R.I.P. for mankind as well as animal but evil probably just laughping on mankind for being so stupid and crazy.God will only burned this planet if all mankind are dead so He dont hear evil peoples COMPLAINS:Amen. Condolence to the family of julia campbell,May God comfort you in this situation, and to you Mr. Injustice Secretary Gonzalez Keep your mouth shut if you don't have something good to say, you never know what's the effect to your countrymen about your comment. You better take a rest and resign from your position.
It's so disgusting to have a top official in our country commenting the tragedy of Julia with very insensitive and "moronic" attitude. What if one of Gonzales' daughters were the victim of this satanic and barbarous crime? What would you feel, Mr. Secretary, if that happens to you or to someone you love? Would you be consoled if we say that part to blame is your being confident to the people you are also helping?
I praise Ms. Julia for doing something good and noble to our people who are in dire need. I'm just sad that there are evil people who would like to take advantage of the generosity of good-hearted people like Campbell. And I'm very sad to have a government official like Gonzales. Hope I hear him resigning from his post the soonest. Foot in mouth disease is an ailment not restricted to the cattle species.
In behalf of all the Filipino living and working here in Saipan , we condoled to the family of Ms. Julia Campbell. We hoped for the immediate response and justice from the Philippine government, the department of justice, for whom the leadership was BADLY given to irresponsible secretary.
The Filipinos are trying to prove in the world positively who the FILIPINO is, What is the beauty of Seven Thousands One Hundred Islands in the East, the PHILIPPINES. With this ignorant comment of the chief justice in the case of Ms. Julia Campbell which he strongly said that he is a LEADER, the Philippine chief executive should do something to this MORON Leader to prevent another Global Embarassment to the Filipino People. To Ms. Julia Campbell, Thank you very much for all the cares and love that you have given to my fellow Filipinos and to my country? We felt sorry for the family of Ms. Campbell for what happen and for such rude comment. THANK YOU VERY MUCH JULIA. Pancratiusjuan
Justice sec.Gonzales is old and he should retired early before he damaged more the dignity of filipinos, but he is right for saying that it is dangerous to travel alone in the wrong place at wrong time.As you see it clearly,Philippines is not a safe place neither for its people. All this bad elements our country had,it is really a stupid decision to go wander around alone on places you never been or someone knows you well to escort you around for your safety..That statement hurts so many, but that is the truth, and we filipinos should not deny that otherwise there will be more victims coming if not careful enough to think first before risking oneself. It is not only Julia Campbell who is a victim of that evil, there could be more but no one knows about it,it happens that the victim is a foriegner and more known to everyone that is why it is being investigated and tried to solved it early, what about the victim of this ASG,extra judicial killings, political killings up to now it is not justified. Philippines government should declared the country a risky place for locals or foreigners alike because our security forces is not strong enough to secured everyone. That is the fact and we can not deny that...it is better the whole world knows it is too risky to travel around the country than makes them feel they are in paradise not knowing it is the paradise of evil people that ready to kill anytime for evil reason. Julia still alive if she is careful enough and not trust any people at all. There is many saint in Philippines all over but most of them are dead.Dead can not save anyone you know that.Only the living God can save the lives of anyone who called and follow Him. The killers of Julia will not done that if Julia did not gave them that chance. She went there with out anyone to supervise her is a stupid decision and she knows she is a foreigner that can easily victimized by evil people living there. Well no matter who is wrong or right that incident is already happened, what should be done to avoid another tragedy is for people to be more careful and wise enough so they do not becomes victim, and that evil should be catched and jailed them so they no more can victimize others. I just want to extend my condolences to the family of Julia Campbell. And I want to thank Julia for what she've done in my province of Sorsogon...The people of Sorsogon loves her very much especially the kids who's with her when she was there...She was a good volunteer....Thank u so much Julia...
God loves u and so do we... May u rest in peace!!! Lyn chie About Mr. Raul Gonzalez...ur an idiot !!! how dare u to say that to Julia...what about ur wife and daughter...aren't they idiot like u? hope u apologize to the family of Julia...
==============================
Howie, As you know, Julia's blog has gotten the attention of her friends, family and admirers. Links and posts by and about her have been used by the local news (her photos, her writings, e.g.). I have been following GMA 7's reports on this tragedy myself. A week since retrieving her remains, the police is still holding on to (or, at least has been staying with the line of) a "teen-age witness" (probably the only one next to the dog). However, entry 139 of Julia's blog which I read as far back as 19th or 20th April says [entry emphasis mine]: Clarence Clifford De Guzman said... Dear Julia: I met you hours before you were to die on April 8, i know it was you because you were still on your way down to TAPIA falls at around 5 pm with a guide, ( i dont know why reports say you were hiking alone and that is not true) Since it was already late i wondered if you will be able to reach the falls with enough daylight. and i said Hi to you and asked if you were going to TAPIA falls and you replied DYAN LANG SA BABA, i was impressed that you spoke tagalog very well. i didnt know that you will perish on that fateful day. I hope that Justice will be served Im praying for your soul. we lost a wonderful person and heaven gained an angel 8:46 PM ---------------- Have the law authorities looked into this angle? At least to provide one more witness. Since we have all expressed our sentiments publicly for Julia, have identified with her experiences, etc, and entry author bravely wrote his whole name (assuming it is not an alias), I wonder if the local authorities and media have gone beyond looking at stained fabric--or harassing the suspect's family--to add a little more data to their investigation and use the technology of the internet more. By all accounts, Julia's media connection in the US prior to becoming a volunteer to the Philippines have been watching the tragedy and investigation unfold. Also, the blogs of those whom Julia encountered on the eve of her disappearance proliferates with their accounts. Just a thought. To Julia's family and friends everywhere, I share your loss. As the family statement said, she is a smart traveller. If the entry above is correct, Julia placed her trust on the local guide to be her companion and therefore did not/may not have hiked alone (Sec. Gonzales, are you reading this?) I hope, too, that 'Mr. de Guzman' will be brave to say his story. ============================== Kaffee
You are right,Mr.de Guzman could tell the real story at least who is the tour guide accompany Julia, but just a common sense,no need to find DNA test or what ever laboratory test result, the suspect is for me the criminal if not he has no reason to hide in the first place, other than that why is it the stuff that belongs to Julia was found in their house.Julia was probably killed right inside their house and buried about 300 meters away from their house.Well, this crimes will only show how smart or stupid our law enforcer in solving the crimes, crimes will takes years before it get justified if judges are so stupid to solve the crimes. If they can not jailed even one of the assailant i wont wonder if USA will never respect our justice system nor other countries will respect the filipino people. What do you think about that,Kaffeeman. I hope the media will continue pursuing the story. I don't think the killer is telling the whole truth. It is hard to believe that he only struck Julia once when according to the autopsy, Julia had wounds on her head and defensive wounds on her arms. Besides, if Julia bumped the killer from behind (this is also hard to believe), she would have said something immediately. I don't think he was deaf and blind and not hear and see who he was about to strike.
Grace
I agree with you that killer of Julia Campbell is lying how he or (they) had killed Julia.I said "they"because with the damages Julia get from her killers it points out that there is more than one people involved. The way killer narrated the story,it really show how he mastered first what to say before surrendered himself to authority. That killer has a policeman uncle and that uncle of him probably advise him what to say to cover how brutal the death of Julia in her killers arm. It is good that atleast one of the assailant had surrendered and hopefully the rest of his accomplish would surrender also.I dont believe the way he told the story how he killed Julia unless he explain why is it Julia`s stuff was found in his house. My observation Julia probably decided to spend her night in her killers house as she is scheduled to left for Manila the next day.On that evening while Julia was at their house having massage as she want to have for relaxation, then the killer together with his accomplish had decided to killed Julia by smashing her of the wooden tool and strangulation had done by one of her assailant. The killer, his wife and the sister of wife could be involved but now they decided to only one admitted the killing so the rest of guilty person still can run around free. If Julia is still alive she probably said to her killer that he is not only a killer, robber but a liar as well.Well, God the only one can punished that killer more worst than what human justice could done on him.Look likes he is a very special killer that had to be treated like a president.Well, what is the difference anyway as you can see even the president of USA also authorized the killing of innocent,so even USA try hard to bring goodwill of american people it will not help at all especially if the president the one on the wrong way of killing people. My conclusion,i dont think Julia`s killer would be punished while the guilty president is free to kill people for their self interest as well.Julia killed by her killer for his self interest to get Julia`s stuff and revenge against foreigner that he think is a threat to their place. Both had make mistakes,if Julia didnt went there that killings wont happened.Julia survived in Bicol eventhough that area was also known for many assailants, because there she was officially known that she is going to be on that place therefore the bicolanos is responsible for her safety, otherwise if that killing happened in bicol then by now bicol is on the list as one of dangerous areas for foreigner and for sure no one will dare to visit that place. I wonder how Sec.Raul Gonzales would decide in that case. The deal could be freedom for rapist Daniel Smith,in order that Duntugan would be free to live with his family happily again. That is the vision i imagine would happen after. Im very much sad about what happen to julia....shes an innocent person and she wants only to help filipinos...Im shocked what ive watch in tv about her..I hoped our goverment do such actions immedietely to give her justice...I love Julia for what she did..she is very brave and hardworking person....I hope youll fine in heaven and you may rest in peace..Dont worry Julia God knows everything and promise he will always be there for you...

Why is it most of good nice people die or got killed so young while the bad evil people live more longer, giving the bad people enough time to repent or repay their debt or it is true "Bad grass live longer than good one" May God come back soon to fullfilled His promised return not Gen. Doughlas McArthur that said,he shall return when war is over,God coming back in the height of heavy turbulence, wars and mis understanding even of a parents to his children and brothers against his brother, so is wife against her husband, at that moment God is the one will give justice to everyone and redeem those who remains faithful to God.That is the end of this planet EARTH,It is ready to be burn sooner than we think. So please keep the faith so thru faith we can still live one more chance in God Kingdom where there is no more evil, death or sin because God will never tolerate injustice in Heaven.Devil evil people are banned in Heaven, only those believe in God,follow God can have second life.Devil evil people will suffer themselves being burn up in the lake of hell.Revelation must takes place if not devil, evil people will say God is lying.I believe God is not lying and that He will come back according to what the Holy Scriptures said.Hopefully all mankind is ready and those who want to be save must learn to accept Jesus Christ and have faith even up to the last trumpet never lost hope God saves those who have faith in Him.Amen. i really felt sorry for the people of Korea for what Cho did to his fellow students and teachers at Virginia Tech. I read a lot of articles regarding the background of Cho and i've found out that he has a phsycological and emotional problem as well. I also don't think that that Korea boy is not really bad, someone or something pushed him thru thats why siguro he did that thing. For what happened naman to Ms. Campbell at least the suspect surrendered by himself yet i don't believe that he just hit her once in the head because according to the autopsies, Ms. Campbell was found to have a lot of bruises in her body.

This blog will attempt to find relevance in the exotic and the commonplace, value the undervalued, and satisfy my personal curiosity about all things that have anything to do with being Filipino. Howie Severino is a journalist, documentary maker, mentor, father, husband, patriot and pilgrim. He does two main gigs on television: I-Witness, GMA Network's pioneering documentary program, and Sine Totoo, a showcase for some of GMA's best non-fiction public affairs programming. For four years, Howie also reported on culture and travel in the quirky Sidetrip sa Saksi stories on the late night news. He has also worked at, in reverse chronological order, The Probe Team (reporter), Phil. Center for Investigative Journalism (staff), The Manila Chronicle (reporter), The Journal Weekender (editor), Department of Health (speechwriter), Ateneo de Manila High School (teacher), the Philippine Embassy in Wash. D.C. (writer), the Boston Common (pretzel vendor), McDonald's (grill cook), newspaper delivery boy, choirboy. In the mid 1990s, Howie wrote a column in the Manila Times called Moving Mountains, which explored environmental issues and trends.
