It's likely no one ever asked Ebe Dancel if he meant it this way when he wrote the first lines of Sugarfree's haunting classic, Kwarto. But I suspect he'd agree if I tell him the moment his songs are first played in public, they're actually no longer his.
If there were ever a soundtrack to the chapter on memory and monuments in a book I've been writing, Kwarto would be one of the big songs, if not the opening tune. The song begins as an unintended homage to Lou Reed but proceeds to open its own vistas. Remembrance is like this sometimes. On a slow day in a cafeteria an odd refrain from outside wafts in or someone a few tables away hums something familiar; a sense of place sits beside you, or a person from the past, a piece of conversation, and things melt and merge and for a few moments the song is yours. Last year I chased the ghost of a storied officer, Col. John Miller Stotsenburg, who arrived with the armed forces of the US a century and a decade ago to annex the Philippines. Stotsenburg fell in what was known once as a town in Bulacan called Qingua - the site of furious volleys from Filipino revolutionaries attempting to halt the advancing imperial US juggernaut. Called Plaridel today, the town contains other exquisite delicacies aside from fried native duck. Every 23rd of April, the proud local government of Plaridel celebrates the Battle of Qingua as a non-working holiday to mark the vigilance of local heroes led by Juan Evangelista and Pablo Maniquiz, who were part of the forces that killed Stotsenburg and blocked the march of the US army. Ironically, for decades a marker stood in the very place where Stotsenberg fell - to mark the death of the US officer. Then in 1999 the local government decided to restore dignity to their town and country. It commissioned the distinguished sculptor from Jolo, Toym Imao, to erect a huge mural - a grand tableau that gave face to Maniquiz, Evangelista and other unsung Philippine fighters, which today frames the original Stotsenburg memorial, which was left intact onsite to carry on the conversation between past and present. National memory is a strange thing. Sometimes it's a lurch across time and space that takes you to places where the pen and the sword can't reach. Sometimes it's like a dream, full of rushing colors. Other times it's like the sleep of the dead; there is nothing except the second before waking. In 1991, the magnificent vote of 12 brave Filipino Senators served the long overdue eviction notice to all US military bases on Philippine soil. Huge tracts of land, sea and air throughout the Filipino archipelago, which Americans ruled for almost a century, came once more under Philippine authority. Camp O'Donnell was reclaimed and so was Subic; Clark became ours again and yet what did we do with it? In 2003, Philippine officials christened a massive park in Clark using the original name of the US airbase. The space was named Stotsenburg Park, after the US officer gunned down in 1899 in Qingua. Not Diokno; not Tañada, Recto or Sakay, who all fought against American rule and for Philippine sovereignty. The felled occupier was worthier. The same Imao was commissioned to build the Clark park monument, and there he built a thing of grace: Stotsenburg bigger than life, riding a handsome horse and looking afar with two other US sentries on horseback flanking him. But bless Imao for his subversive wit: across the road, opposite the statue of the US invaders, a similar monument, which was not part of the original design, was erected: four Filipino revolutionaries about to light an immense cannon aimed directly at Stotsenburg. I remember walking down a narrow dirty road in Caloocan early last year. Clotheslines crisscrossed the street, children were playing and vendors were selling fried food under the shade of tattered tarpaulins. On a transistor radio Dancel's voice teased out Kwarto's first verse and the fat sound of Jal Taguibao's bass line pulsed out despite the tinny speakers. I spent a whole day in that street laughing with kids and asking bemused adults and senior citizens about the name of the road they had lived in most of their lives. No one really remembered why it was called "Stotsenburg St." and they all had a great time theorizing about the person or thing behind the name and when and why it was named. Not even the archivists of Caloocan's city hall whom I later visited could remember where the name came from. Such is life. Twists and turns and twists. To get to Stotsenburg St. from the main highway of Metro Manila, you pass through an avenue called Heroes del 96, named after the revolutionaries of 1896 who led the victorious campaign against Spain in order to build the republic - the first in Asia - which the US soon extinguished. Turn right at the end of Heroes del 96 and you reach the streets of Vibora and Del Pilar, named after Filipinos who fought against the US annexation of the Philippines. Turn left, its Stotsenburg St. I don't know if anyone ever asked Ebe Dancel if the first lines of his song were about his country today. I think it is. "Naglilinis ako ng aking kwarto / na punong-puno ng galit at damit. / Mga bagay na hindi ko na kailangan. Nakaraang hindi na pwedeng ipagpaliban." We are a people obsessesed with the costumes of modernity, a forgetful people living in a land simmering with rooted ambient enmities - a place where the past will eventually catch up with the consequences of forgetting. The future will not be pretty without remembrance. It rarely is. Trackbacks

I like this piece about monumental stories..it shows how our leaders are insensitive to our history as a nation they showed their love for foreign occupiers more than the those of our Filipino brothers who opposed these foreign invaders.. Even the memories of ours being nationalistic was demolished at EDSA...look at the historic EDSA revolution which shows our unity to stand bup and be united just for those 3 days of Feb. 1986...they build Commercial buildings, Railways in less than a year after it happened just to put out the light of nationalism thats fervading our country at that time...ngayon pag tinanong mo ang mga kabataan di nila alam yung ngyari dun sa EDSA in 1986 pati mga nagsimula nun ayaw na rin makisali kasi nga the Foreign subjugator at that time see to it that we don't add more fire to a fledging nationalism for our country..and see to it that no historical value will be remembered for that EDSA Revolution in 1986.
The problem with us, Filipinos, is that we are biased against our own history.
There is a latest issue in this site "why Olalias wasn't acknowledged as heroes?"; the bombing of Marcos' face somewhere in Baguio(?), etc. People who form part of our history should be remembered---to give education to our next generations. Whether they are people from politics, medicine; science; religion, etc. History has always two faces: good and bad. We should not only depict the heroes, but also the villains in our history. In so doing, people have an interesting view of our past. And I don't see any problem putting a foreign name in our streets, for sure they made part of our history. And I found it interesting too, seeing landmarks stating what is the relevance of "that" specific monument in our history. It sends me back in their time and saying to myself "ahhh". Advance Happy Happy Happy 26th Birthday to the E B Babe Joyce Joana M. Burgos in Laguna Philippines.

There were big monumental stories we can be proud of but it can be forgotten easily by our indulgence and insensitivity to the sacrifice of our real heroes. Little brown almond eyed pinoy inspite of its heoric endeavour doesn't deserve to have a landmark named after them. You gotta have a GQ look and an awesome sounding last name like Blumentritt and Stotsenburg. Well the room or ang kuwarto has a narrow window for a view.
Did anyone read the article on LA times that Pacquio inspite of his talent doesn't have a pizzaz and a GQ look. Heroes do come in different sizes but not everyone get honored, plastered and cast. Who said last week that "tao ako hindi igor..." Why do we have to build monuments for somebody/events.. Remembering? idolising?
I think its for remembering the sacrifices and deeds that they had done and serve as model to future generations to follow., pero di naman ngyayari yan sa Pinas kasi me nagtatayo ng bantayog para sa nakakiling na mensahe na gusto nilang maperpetuate, meron naman kahit naipatayo na yung bantayog aatakihin naman ng negatibo, yung sa EDSA di mo nga alam na me bantayog dun sa tamang lugar na pinangyarihan...tinayuan na ng mga lrt yung gitna ng EDSA at malls naman dun sa bakanteng lote dati na pinag-ipunan ng mga tangke, kawal at tao...kaya nga wala na yang EDSA revolution spirit na kinilala naman sa buong mundo at nagsilbing batayan ng pagkatapos mangyari na sinundan ng Germany Re-Unification at pag bagsak ng USSR atbp...kasi nga ang mga lider natin habang buhay sila pera ang mahalaga di bantayog o monumento ...pero pag namatay sila gusto ng mga anak nila at kamag-anak ang magkaroon at magpatayo sila ng monumento para maalala yung namayapang lider, parasaan yun ? bantayog ng mga issue na nalusutan nila at mga problema na binigay nila sa Pinas!! cguro yun na nga . my apologies to nick and rod, who owns this site, and to others
My Countrymen,
How dare you talk about monuments without mentioning my great idol's head monument in Baguio the late Pres. Please kindly sir or madam bring back Bangued Abra to be Region 1 again please now sir or madam:
This is very true when I visited Corregidor most of the statues there are in honor of Americans. Even in the museum most of the pictures which hang on the wall are Americans. Thats why I'm wondering who are the Filipinos who fought for Corregidor during that time.
Don't be surprised because its not our war its America's war and we happened to be a colony of America at that time...so whatever Filipinos sacrificed during that war it doesn't matter coz America don't care..If they care how could they forget those Filipino Veterans that fought their war, they didn't recognized the sacrifices endured and veterans lost lives for 65 yrs after the war ended until this year when Obama sign the law paying the Filipino veterans with such a pittance that a $8000 sum if you divide it 65 yrs will give you 5,800 a yr more or less, US have already earned more for that sum of money deposited in a bank after the war. Here is the sad part, I think many of the Filipino veterans will be dead before every Filipino veterans or families can be paid coz they have to endured a long process because of bereaucratic red tape .
monuments are just that. monuments. a lot of us do not even mind them, and even if they're lucky enough for our passing glance, those faces who adorn such are merely targets for ridicule.
i can be romantic about the symbolisms, but the truth is, on this day and age, it hardly matters to us who are merely trying to survive with less than a dollar per day. @Buraot:
Monuments are just that?!!!! Lot of us doesnt mind them??!!!!! Darn. Really??? Do you visit your deceased relatives in the cemetery? Do you mind them? Just asking. Back to the topic: Edukasyon po and pagkukulang sa ating bansa kaya ganun nalang ang pagkakaintindi ng kabataan sa Monumento gaya ni Buraot. Kumpara sa Monumento at sayo? Sino ang mas walang kwenta? Gamitin mo utak mo parekoy. Kakakain yan ng pagkain na walang nutrisyon. At dahilan bakit di nag progress utak mo.
Kahit ang mga itinuturing natin bayani, may mga mali rin silang nagawa dahil hindi rin sila perpekto, tao rin sila na nakakagawa ng pagkakamali. great blog...one day i was in a military school looking all those great men who fought the great wars. And with their pictures are great quotations...but none, not a single one is Filipino...by the way Rod, you know the General who went to Japan to fight the Americans?
I once saw a monument in marikina, it made me smile and wonder what the monument was for.
It was a monument of a mother holding a "tabo" while washing the butt of a young boy. dapat igawa ng monumentong hubo´t hubad sina Hayden at Katrina to mark their scandalous love affair as symbol of wrong love and wrong place.
This has nothing to do with your current topic....However think about this now....Regarding the video of Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili... The Question "Who is the Victim here"... Ms Halili claiming she is the victim and He (Hayden) should pay... Well at the time Halili is a willing participant... also... More to follow... but first.... Bong Revilla got in the circus... Two things on Why Bong got into the Act: First and foremost maybe He really care hmmm...or Maybe a way to get Media mileage... nothing beat the free media...Knowing Bong most likely is about media mileage....Now the Palace get into the act: oh yeah for them to not focus on whats going on in the palace are a plus...Plus... they need to jump on the bandwagon of Feel sorry for, is "Woman rights" Well What about the Navy SR. leutenant and the Balikatan alleged anomalies, hmm now it is clear concentrate on Ms. Halili case and limelight will be away from the Female Leutenant and focus on Halili, very clever indeed, Smart but hmmm no one will buy that the Palace really care... or do you... Now back to Bong everybody know He did not win a re-elections for Gov. of Cavite.. that along, tell you more about him... Cavitenio is about through with him...Now taking Ms Halili on.. I think is a launching pad for something bigger than Senate re-election.. I don't think He is eyeing the Presidency But I think He want to be Vice President...so While He is working on Ms. Halili The news will be focus on him plus the talk show...is free media mileage at its best ika nga...Well for at least maybe a couple of weeks... no more than that...
Now Back to Ms. Halili... it is true that she is perhaps the victim here...But she also the willing participants.. now for Hayden... oh yah He should be santions.... But I do not think something will be done.... Now My own Honest summary here you go.. The Palace= JUMP ON BANDWAGON (Halili Vs KHO) Bong Revilla= Media Mileage possible run for V.P. Hayden and Halili...+= They are both victim of thier own doing... For Ms. Bello = Betrayal of Trust since both Halili and Hayden benefited from Ms. Bello Thats my take.. Again I don't have dog in this fight just my observation.. For Bong if he runs for VP and made it Cavitenio will be proud of him too.. hehehe
Hahaha
Hayden is no doubt a sick man, imagine secretly vedeoing his sexual circus. Yes Ms. Halili consented to the actual sex but not in the taking of videos. And it is not just Ms.Halili who was victimized bur some other unsuspecting girls. To me Hayded should be jailed and stripped of his license in the PRC. I heard that the children of Ms Bello was the one who downloaded the so-called Hayden sexual scandal for public viewing. Not to mention the boom in sales of the pirated copies of the scandal. I tell you it more than just a "Careless Whisper" If Katrina agreed to have sex with me, I'll record it also. but for personal reasons. It's only for my personal viewing.
What is your opinion on the case of hayden kho? I have seen the video of him dancing with catrina halili and that was just about it. Was there any other video of them having actual sex together? I don't see any reason why a lot of people were so interested in all of this.
Seems like they were just having fun looking at each other dancing in front of a mirror. So what, big deal! He didn't even touch her in her private parts when she was right in front of him. So, what's the fuss all about? I think, that guy "senator", i don't remember his name was so "perked up" with this girl that he could probably want to see more of her dancing. Most likely in front of him. He (the senator) have gone through the whole nine-yards for this girl to file a complaint at the nbi's office. He should file a separate complaint too while he's there. That is, not being able to see it live. And for those people saying that was in bad taste, the hell with you, leave them alone please. These are two consenting adults trying their best in dancing. Oh yeah, i've heard that the government was thinking of yanking his license to practice? What's that got to do with him being a doctor? Come on now people! any one who would have seen and heard about this incident would laugh till they cry. And for the cbcp, stay out of this will you! Or else! this blogger would be all over you, like "flies on a dead rat"! Try not to talk about what is ethical and what's not. In other words, in a very distinct and sophisticated way of saying "shut up"! Don't forget to say your prayers for the guy who is always dressed in red prada coat, maybe, he'll forgive you. sorry i forgot to put my name on it. Number #25 was from me.
Anyway,it was good it was shewn in public otherwise, nobody knows how good their acting. Ang sexy ni Kat at may hitsura naman si Hayden,i hope they will show us more of their sexy video pero dapat humingi muna ng pahintulot ang downloader para hindi sya makasuhan ng infringements, kaya lang baka mismo pa nga si Hayden ang nagdownload para alamin ang reaction ng publiko sa naturang video. Ang masasabi ko lang,it truly entertained us for awhile, sometimes people has to done crazy things just to makes others laugh or cry. Ako napatawa sa acting nila, pero para kay Dra.Belo masakit yon knowing Hayden is her longtime BF. Come on Folks readers of this Blog, This is nota rejoicing matter, Regarding Ms Halili and Mr. Kho, either way both lives maybe ruin, for few years to come.
Now what you wants to read and comments about are the bandwagon effect in this matter, I still believe that this no more than a media mileage for Senators for something big that the Good Senator from Cavite went all out...But I hope he is very sincere about his assistance We shall before the filing deadlines of all candidates on which course The Senator will take, I'm pretty sure He wants to run for V.P. Now for Gabriela groups well they at least consistent in regards to woman rights. Now for Mr. Gonzales stating about years at the Penn...according to news account I think he is being usaul self. Now for the Palace getting on Halili Bandwagon...well you all know what I mean they want to get media good mileage too. and So many others getting on Bandwagons Lets talk JOBS JOBS....and People that are hungary... I know Ms Halili needs all the help but what about those thousands thats needs help too, just look at the few folks in WOWOWEE and Bingo na... They are hoping to win to get medical cure.. or to buy medicines to thier sick love one's What about those folks.. Again I don't have a dog in this fight... Woman right need to be protected If hayden commited a crime then He should be punish for it.. But let the ruleof Law takes its course...please since election is near don't use it for political gains.. after all people have short memories... and election is far away anything can happend.. It will be a toss up Between Roxas and Escudero, Ms. Legarda.... I hope Erap can convince them to just give way base on Survey results.... Thats my take All Three of them I think will be a good president for the Country... Thats my take Itong ating mga senador basta sex ang national trash scandal binibigyan ng priority for a hearing.
Please senator why leave this trashy shit of scandal to the NBI instead of wasting your time getting horny in front of Television. hindi monumental story ang plano nyu. alam ni Katrina yan na kukunan sila sus ...kasi di sya sikat dati wala syang gaanong pelikula na kumikita ayan sikat na sikat pa sya biruin mo worlwide pa ang audience nya sa you tube monumental piece ika nga ..kasunod nyan pelikula o kaya kakandidato yan ang plataporma nya"in defense of the Dignity of Women" abangan nyo
OOOOH grabe ganda ng katawan ni Katrina it is done porno style talaga....Daming style ginawa nila... Mas malinaw ang kuha ng comercial model. I recommend married couples view the complete video.... I propose a statue of Katrina be erected in luneta........ kaya naman pala nagawa nila HighCat ang mga ganon bagay dahil pareho silang mga praning, pasalamat na lang tayo mga dear viewers dahil kahit paano ay naaliw rin nila tayo.
I saw nothing wrong with the said video,it was an act of sexy, handsome guy that just wanted to share their sexy videos. I hope HighCat would makes some educational sex videos, like how to enjoy sex with out making babies, how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, when is the proper time to try sex, etc. In order for him to be free from going to jail, the court should used them to educate people how to becomes a responsible sexual partner, lover and how to have a happy family. After all sex organ main purpose is to produce babies but only knowledge how to make babies is not a big issue, how to raise a family properly is what matters the most. I´d wished Hay make Kat pregnant then for sure i would loved them to have a monument of a happy family with HayKat and their children as monumental model. Nevermine Vicky, she already has her own family to love and cherish, she should let Hay go his way that way he will be happy too. I think Belo and Kho just using each other. I'll take the rich one syempre. No doubt about it. Wala pa namang kupas eh
And one more thing. Before Ruffa Mae is involved with this mess. But cried that she is innocent after Bello spread the news that she saw Ruffa Mae in the video. Is this the reason kaya why Sen Bong Revilla is keen on helping Katrina to charge the responsible person just to avoid the release of this video? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Yes I think Meron nyan if I remember nagiiiyak si Ruffa Mae last year. And sabi ni Dra Belo nakita nya si Ruffa Mae then later denied it.
I'll take the old millionaire, and fool her into believing that i love her.
Hayden is a genious remember the old bitch forgave him when he made the fake suicide, and oh romantic his suicide note he wrote I love you Vicky all over his body. Haha as if he will die taking 4 tablets of aspirin. Idol talaga. The Porche sports car, the condo unit and all the benifits he was showered by the old bitch, Hayren does not need to go to work. Just sleep with the old bitch and he can name his gift. hi Red.
Spectatorship of the Proletariat. Or Taumbayang Naging Protean. Pag nahanap mo, sagot mo Coks...)
