They will call 2009 a revelation year, when the nation was once more forced to confront self-evident truths and when again too many looked away.
Decades from now, we will be asked not merely how but why we endured the decay and incredible debauchery of our time. The indifferent will shrug and the clever will offer ready theories. But many will be hardpressed to come up with suitable answers. What would you call a country whose highest officials greet mass murderers with expressions of undying friendship, an embrace, and a handshake? What would you call a country ruled by a government that considers its citizens as its main export and which treats its soldiers as mere fodder while it feeds, arms, and fondles grotesque warlords? What would you call a country where larceny has become the leading state enterprise and where shamelessness has become the rule of law? Here everything seems to be for sale. A man's liver, a woman's children, territories, forests, national dignity – there is a price for everything. And what cannot be purchased is either destroyed or stolen. In the Philippines, acts of extermination and plunder have become all-encompassing, reaching levels of ignominy several magnitudes greater than the achievements of the most notorious criminals in the country's history. Here, the chief executive and her coterie steal lives and mine the national treasury and the ballot box, hoping, from experience, that people would rather forget, would rather move on. Because that is what the recent years has taught – that national nausea eventually recedes. An election is stolen in 2007? It's OK. Contracts worth billions of dollars are drawn up with intestinal ties to the First Gentleman's belly? It's alright. Activists and journalists are periodically slaughtered like chicken? No problem. Noisy groups might throw a tantrum, effigies might be burned and perhaps there might even be a little chaos in the streets. But we have learned to eat bullets for breakfast and for lunch and dinner, various servings of atrocities and pillage. Life will go on. At least that is the hope. When the first working day of December came to a close, the Maguindanao carnage was supplanted by the accumulated certificates of candidacies filed by a motley crowd aiming for the highest post in the land. Ninety-five Filipinos in total had entered their names in the race for the position of Philippine president while the person who had usurped the crown of the republic – the ugliest, most despised individual in the country's annals –moved to avoid prosecution, imprisonment, and execution by going for a lower elective post. Veiled Gloria, mother of disgrace, the nerve is with thee. Blessed art thou among the craven and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Mikey. "I have one term left but I am giving it to someone ten million times more intelligent than I am," said the congressman of Pampanga's Second District, Mikey Arroyo, when his mum officially registered her need for his position. Going by accepted standards of arithmetic, shouldn't the good congressman have just given his post to a slab of concrete? In the end, do we realize that the humiliation is ours? That by our silence we also own the acts of dishonor committed by those whom we detest? For all the noise and heat that the most humongous scandals of the government have generated, ruling elites continue to expect the public's anger to be brief – that citizens of common station will not leave their households to put an end to the indignities they have suffered for too long as individual families and as a people. Today we are asked in the face of the Maguindanao butchery to remember the names of the murdered. But maybe it's high time as well that we recall the names of our very own – to name each child in our family – who will inherit the ruins left behind by our inaction. When an 18-foot whale shark ended up dying on the breakwaters of Manila Bay last October, too few realized that one of our country's possible futures had already washed up on our shores. Decades from now a coroner's report of the whale shark's demise might stand in as a snapshot of the Philippines in 2009: "The skull of the once majestic creature was fractured while its heart pumped septic water through its veins. Its eyes were gouged. Numb to violence and duplicity, the body endured ten thousand slashes and it wasted away slowly, steadily, in its desire to float away, to forget and to move on." Trackbacks

ako po ay hanga sa mga nagkakalat ng uncensored crime scene pics sa facebook. ikinakalat p nila ang karumaldumal na ngyari sa mga biktima.
you´ve described perfectly how this lovely creature being wounded, tortured, abused, neglected and loveless.
in this planet of evil,no wonder it seems many people enjoyed the works of evil and set aside the love of God. but on the end of this world, everyone will called to God but He won´t listen, time for mankind to realized God had enough of his patience for mankind to change but mankind never change instead they get more worse. May God Almighty come back soon and burn this planet for good that´s the only way to end evil=live planet all at once. If we really want to move on as a progressive nation, we should trash that so called white elephant "DEMOCRACY" and all the politicians who perpetually resisting change. It's not fit for pinoys because majority are hard-headed and corrupt. It's not surprising that most media and politicians will hate COMMUNISM although it's good for us because this politicians can no longer do their evil ways to the max. We, the people are only being lead now into a never-ending cycle of poverty and slavery of their evil deeds because we fail to dictate our fate. We can never rely on these politicians because they're always against for our good as a nation. Their evil agenda must be first and foremost. We need a total revolution. Look at our asian neighbors. They gambled for their future in the years past so they're now moving on and even ahead than most economies. We should not fear to change. We need a secure future for our children's children, let us not be complacent. I hope that soon people should rise up and emulate the Great Andres Bonifacio. Unseat the guilty politicians, put them in jail or firing squad. Get back their properties both local and abroad and have them utilized by the new communist government for all the people, both rich and poor. We badly need a total cleansing revolution to cut off the heads of the guilty leaders without mercy. What a shame we failed our fallen heroes! We are answerable to them and for posterity. Thanks Red for your truthful article. We are now a shameful race because of our inaction. If a new Bonifacio among us will rise up and plan, I'll surely support him with a just, fair treatment for all the people except the corrupt leaders. Justice should be foremost for pinoys in all walks of our lives so that Philippines will truly be alive in Asia. We need revolution! We need to cut off with impunity the multitude of devils among us and let them feel true justice!
Yes Maria Mercedes. Hardship in our country penetrates even to the bones. I may not call myself poor now compared to the majority of pinoys, with this rampant corruption, deception, lies, etc. we surely cannot build a good foundation for our children, worse as a nation. Where everyone is always prone to unsurpassed crime, inaction, ignorance, cowardice of the police/soldiers, corrupt minds of the voters, election cycle where getting rich and getting fooled is the rule of the game. The misgovernance is too overwhelming! Right thinking and noble pinoys needs true justice for the poor and for everyone! The past people powers we had are just superficial. We need real change but first we need excruciating death sentence to the multitude guilty politicians.
By now our enemy is within our midst, wolves in sheep's clothing who are corrupt and plunderers. Bonifacio set a example for us with a few lessons to avoid. Someone should set up a secret society with noble ends for the masses (poor & noble rich) with the main agenda of putting down this corrupt government and set up a new communist governance with little assistance from our neighbors in its infancy. We should always support people like-minded with Bonifacio.
Straight, hard-line communism does not work. One only needs to look at the few last remaining communist states today such as North Korea, as well as the collapsed Soviet Russia to see what communism does. A Socialist government that can accommodate both a free market to promote growth and hard work; and provide its less-fortunate citizens with local opportunities; free, mandatory education and support until College, or at least High School for the children of these underprivileged, to start building up their lives, not lifetime grants or guarantees that promote laziness and reliance on government give-aways. We also need leaders that can resist the majority of temptations brought by their office. There will never be perfect leaders, as we are all human, we can only strive to be as close to perfect as possible. To these ends, we need a fresh start: a clear, well-defined, modern constitution and laws that are actually upheld, not an ambiguous constitution and shaky laws that can be translated a certain way for the right price. I believe that the amount stolen from our taxes should be enough to at least give our country the head start she needs. Power_corrupts,_absolute_power_corrupts_absolutely.
You cited well the N.Koreans and the former Soviet Russia but you failed to mention China, Vietnam, and the present Russia which is still a communist state which are continuously booming. This democrazy government around the world is now slowly falling to it's knees by the uncontrolled capitalism and deception of the laws. Surely east asia and some parts of southeast asia will be improving for years to come ... but except Phils. No wonder many nations shifted to parliamentarian which I think will still be ineffective for us hard-headed pinoys. Even a trillion laws can NEVER change for the better Phils. because of the inactive, lazy, coward attitude of our leaders including the military. But we have the manpower and the sun shines best in our tropical country compared to the former Soviet Russia and N.Korea; we can surpassed them and be like China and Vietnam if only we revolutionize. Good governance is in itself not sufficient, we must make our economy manufacturing-dependent. We can never move on by just having good governance, we must have ambition as a nation. But too sad good governance is sooo elusive for pinoys. Making laws and implementing them had become a circus in our history as a sovereign people. The new communist govt. should gamble in creating small industries for exports, explore and make petrochem plants in Sulu by relocating all its inhabitants to mainland Mindanao, use police power not just in a local scale. Also put up a permanent military camp there so its easier to wipe out the bandits. Easy for us to be indicted for illegal possession of firearms in the metropolis but the foolish impartial govt. fails to disarm, put in jail the bandits. Just look at the recent oblation run by stupid UP students, aren't there any school officials who objected to this tradition? Certainly you are cowards! They're corrupting the minds of their fellow female students and worse even the minors who're watching / learning about it in the tv. This tradition is conditioning the minds of the people to accept what is bad as harmless good. No wonder we are a society of very loose morals. As I remember if I'm right, it's only Teofisto Guingona and Nene Pimentel who objected to this immoral oblation run? If these sororities wants to relay a message to the govt., do it in a right decent way. Their message was instead highlighted by their pride and indecency. Another, for the supreme court to extend another voter's registration. How many times this was already extended? The SC in this democrazy govt. is only teaching the people to be complacent, even law violators. When the process was already extended, there should be no way to extend it anymore. No matter how many times they extend it, there'll always be hard-headed pinoys who will toy with the law. If they failed to register, then sorry, just let them do it the next election. They're a short of going to jail for abusing many times the law. Still many smart things will crop up in our minds for progress if only we revolutionize. This space is not enough.
This is a very truthful article, and of course it depresses me again. Whenever I read articles like this, it awakens my desire to leave the country because of hoplessness. I will be honest with that, in the face of such atrocities from our leaders andthe current economic situation of our country I feel like packing my bags and going. I cannot promise that I will be here to rebuild the future, when I worry about what my family will eat the next few days, because I do not know how long I can take the hardship.
Democracy is arroyo. I just admire how she handles everything in the Philippines with precision. The media and the so called opposition always attack her and her policies but all bow in the end. She is democracy in the highest level because the people accepts her administration and policies. If the people dislikes her or if they are against her policies she wouldnt have been sitting in malacanang till now. The way it looks is that she will prolong her democratic ideals and governance well beyond 2010 because after getting a congressional seat she will be voted in as prime minister. The people accepts everything...they are satisfied. Their unsatisfaction is just on dakdak and they accede and toe the line afterwards. Long live arroyo and her democratic principles. If you people do not approve of her and her democratic principles then wake up and do something and dont do it just by dakdak....
Actually GMA was rejected by the people but she was there in Malakanyang because of cheating, which is not a secret to all of us. Why she's there for so long because we failed to act, especially the military. As what red said: "we're numb to violence and duplicity, the body endured ten thousand slashes and it wasted away slowly, steadily, in its desire to float away, to forget and to move on."
Juan Dela Cruz is probably related to Gloria Arroyo, one way or another.
Everybody will unit if GMA and ABS-CBN and all the station will unite to dishearten Mrs. Gloria Arroyo and it's constituent and his all Puppies and Puppets she created. Look all the TV station denouncing all the corrupt government official, how come this politician will listen to you since they knew that both parties have own interest to protect your business, why not all of you TV station owner will unite just for the sake of your fellow mediamen killed in maguindanao. We will achieved the peace in our country if all TV Station owner will unite, like I observe when I was a child. Everything will be just same old story and no ended if the media will not forgiveness each other, I will compare you as the politician who thumping stone to each other. Wake up everybody don't make your awareness become dead.
Nice article but I am not sure I am liking the title... morbid and suggestive of suicide and mutilation....
Thank you for writing this, Red.
What would you call a country where funds earmarked for disaster recovery are spent on gourmet dinners? What would you call a country where urban plans are set aside since anyway, these floods come only every 40 years? What would you call a country where relief goods never reach those for whom they were intended? Relief goods for sale! Going cheap! I love your article and 100% agreed. I am very hopeless with the way Philippines is going. Nanghihinayang ako sa mga ginawa ng mga sikat na pinoy sa buong mundo ang panget na ng tingin satin.
