In the middle of reading through this thread on how to show Filipino pride, I found myself uneasy.
At first I thought it might just be the odd disturbing comment (suggestions like posing with the peace sign and squinty eyes, which I hope was meant as a joke and will not be taken seriously) that was causing my queasiness, but I soon realized what was wrong. Every ten comments or so, someone would say something like "rephrase the question in Filipino," or "Managalog tayo." Suddenly it struck me as strange that I was writing about love for country - in English. I was so disturbed I had to stop for a while and over-analyze the situation. Memories of my unhappy childhood entered my mind, and then, in a moment of clarity I decided there was no problem. I told myself that I don't need to speak the language to show my fealty, or any other aspect of my nationality. Being Filipino is so much more than speech. I'm not saying it's not important. It's very important, and if we were to have an educational system similar to the one in Malaysia, our language scholars would probably be very happy. On the other hand, our call center industry would not be as, what's the word? Booming. I am in no way opposed to the Filipino language, but I don't think speaking Filipino is a simple method of showing Pinoy pride. First of all, the word itself is derived from another language, just like the Panatang Makabayan. Second, Filipino is not the only local language we have, not to mention the dialects. If there is a single characteristic definitive of our nationality, language isn't it. I must admit, however, that I think in English. This is the result of being raised in a house where no one speaks any other language, at least not to each other. It is such that when one of us says something in Tagalog, it sounds surreal. I know that many people would have plenty of negative things to say about this, but here is my defense. My parents agreed that we would learn English at home, because they figured Tagalog would be easily picked up at school. While I recall being laughed at by my school mates and excluded from games, I don't regret my parents' decision. Sure, I got ostracized, but I eventually got the hang of speaking in Tagalog, especially after my Grade 1 teacher, Ms. Cariaga, took me aside and told me I would have to learn, or else. Nothing like a gently delivered threat from an idolized teacher to strike fear into a five year-old’s heart. My parents reasoned that English is harder to learn in school, because to master a language, you have to be in an environment which requires its use. Pretty straightforward, isn't it? It wasn't like we had fees at home for speaking in Filipino, it's just that English was what came naturally for us. We had those in school, in certain subjects. Having to pay 25 cents for every Filipino word, now, that was wrong, I thought. What was common in my parents' decision and the school's questionable policy was the well-meaning goal, which was to produce fluent speakers of the English language. And why not? Even the most rabid pro-Filipino activist cannot deny the fact that knowing how to speak proper English is an advantage. Job advertisements show just how much of an edge this is. I think if it helps you improve, it's worth working for. On the other hand, it goes without saying that your native language shouldn't be abandoned. Still, nationalism goes beyond the words you use. No matter what language, if what you say has no meaning, then you may as well just shut up completely. While we were raised speaking in English, we were also raised in an extended (and constant) classroom. No matter where we went, we had a running commentary. Whether we were crossing the street or riding the jeepney (which cost Php1 at the time), we were treated to a highly informational informal lecture on society and philanthropy. This is what happens when your parents are teachers. My childhood memories are sorely lacking when it comes to street games, but they are rich with field trips to Pasig River and Smokey Mountain (Riding in a garbage truck was one of the highlights of my life, no kidding. Unfortunately, it cannot be said that my mother shared my enthusiasm, as she was in charge of the laundry department at the time). We were brought up with a mission to be useful citizens — worthy occupants of the small (but beautiful) space our overpopulated country affords us. The idea is not to be proud of your country, but to be someone your country can be proud of. It's safe to say we do this, each in our own ways, however strange, or, forgive the word, foreign, they may seem. Although I did get the hang of speaking in Filipino, I never mastered the language, and I still get laughed at occasionally for awkward phrasing and misused words, but it isn't for lack of trying. In high school, when we were required to read Noli Mi Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and Mga Ibong Mandaragit, I made a pact with myself to resist the temptation of the comic strip versions. I am proud to say that I read those books from cover to cover, and understood most of them. When I was applying for admission into the Creative Writing program, a former professor told me to try Malikhaing Pagsulat, instead. For a moment, I was tempted, but I realized it would be foolhardy. The point of art is expression, and to force myself to write in a language other than the language in which my ideas are formed would defeat the purpose. After all, doesn't a lot get lost in translation? Speaking (and thinking, and writing) in English doesn't make me less Filipino. I could even argue that the true Filipino is marked by an extraordinary ability to relate harmoniously with others, and my language skills enable me to do this in international situations. That could, of course, be taking it a bit too far. It's a continuing effort, this language mastery, and I consciously strive to learn as much in both languages. Still, I am more at home with English, but that doesn't mean I don't love my country. This may read like an overly defensive obligatory EDSA post, but it isn't. I wasn't there, not wholly, since at the time I was just three months in the making, but my parents were there. They were there, in front of the tanks, among the thousands of people who wanted to be free. So here we are, 24 years later. What are we doing with our freedom? Which begs the question, are we really free? Trackbacks

Melay,i found out your parents made mistakes by teaching only english to you, they should teach you tagalog or the local dialect where you living at,that way you wasn´t allienated in your local school or by your countrymen where english isn´t "yet" the official language.Learning the local dialect help you communicates with local less-educated people but if you can live alright and get along with them with out learning their local dialict then i think english is enough to live-up with, anyway english is a universal language that everyone should learn.
patriotism can not be defines by the languages local people using but by the good deeds they do for the country. there are several non-filipino speakers that contributes a lot to our country, like the americans that help builds schools, higways, bridges to makes every filipinos becomes civilized and order for us to becomes competitive in international community...no jokes our country supplied the wholeworld with highly proffessional performers at any field either for medicines, engineers, entertainments or as DH the only sad part about it,those lefted in the country mostly are the less educated people that makes the country sink because most of them are idiots(vices addicted people)that doesn´t know how to improves the country and how to convinced everyone to love our country,as saying goes:words with out action are useless. see what americans or japanese doing, they do it not just say it.If we filipinos loves our country we must do something for the country, like planting tress,clean-up the country and make it a pollution free country only then we could say we truly love our country, many filipinos say they love Philippines but at the same time pollutes it as well. what Philippines need a real love not a fake love of the politicians and other pretenders. our country will never achieve unity, and will never be united as those rabid tagalogs of imperial manila would always insist that tagalog dialect is a god-given dialect that MUST be spoken of by ALL filipinos, they do not respect other people's culture and identity, as they blindly believe that tagalog is a superior language or dialect, never mind other dialects, to hell with the bisaya.
pinoy ikaw ay pinoy, ipakita sa mundo
Dear Ma'am,
This may not be the right place to tell this but please check two carabao death in Guimba, Nueva Ecija. Last Saturday at Monday po ay namatay ang dalawang kalabaw sa Brgy. Bunol, Guimba, Nueva Ecija. Nagkataon na nabasa ko ang news about anthrax in Cagayan kaya, naalerto po ako. Yong unang kalabaw ay nagtae bago namatay. Inilibing na po ang dalawang kalabaw. Maraming salamat po. I could also be reach at 0908-750-3520 Hi melay, para sakin at kung ako kausap mo na alam kung filipino ka at panay english mo sakin maiisip ko siguro na isa ka sa mga hipokritang tao sa pinas at tatalikuran kita at indi kakausapin. kasi para sakin indi rin masama ang magsalita ng banyaga kasi naging kailangan na rin ang english sa pa-araw2 na pangangailangan. at dahil na rin na-enforce na sa kasaysayan na mas maganda at mainam na matutong magsalita ng english.pero sa sinabi mo na may nagcocomento na managalog na lng d ba. kasi para sa akin ebalanse lang ang mga bagay2 like you use the english language if it is the right person to talk with. If you are talking to a filipino talk in the local dialect that he or she can understand, if it is a foreigner then talk or use a language that he can understand and that is a english dialect.
Because to me speaking a foreign dialect in the native land is a disgrace especially talking to his/her own people.how can you say patriotism if you do not use tagalog for instance when you are talking to the common people. I do believe now, what my professor says in college it is base on the Rizal's document " ang taong indi marunong magmahal ng sariling wika ay mas malangsa pa sa isda" it is a simple phrase but it is a very powerful tool. can you share with me which rich country that uses english as there main dialect aside from the country where english originated? it is like comparing the country of korea and us...though korea was trying to learn english language but why they are richer and stronger than us?why does the hollywood chosing them than us???? lastly indi naman masama matuto at maging sa salitang english ang sakin lang mas maganda siguro na meron depth ka rin sa tagalog.... No...why? pero sa mandaluyong ko pinanganak at sa kasalukuyan nagtratrabaho sa region IV-A....
binasa mo ba kung bakit sa english lang bihasa si Melay?
it was her parents idea to used only english as their official languages in their homes or even in their school so hindi kay Melay ang pagkakamali nasa magulang nya dahil ang akala ng magulang ni Melay sapat na ang matuto lang sa english ang kanilang anak at mabubuhay na sila ng maayos sa ating bansa, but we all realized she miss the opportunity to understand filipinos who only capable to speak and understand local dialect. my children doesn´t speak tagalog nor my dialect at the province where i came from but i speak to them in english that way they can communicate with english speaking people which i find more useful for them in case they decided to travel around the world someday because having a foreign hubby the father of my children and living in my hubby´s country,it is for the benefits of my children to be fluent on their father´s official language which is not english either so to enforce my dialect to them in order for them to learn tagalog would occupy much of their times learning many languages, besides they have no one to communicate with tagalog because most of the people here are from different countries and the only way they could understand each other is for them to learn these country´s official languages. it is an advantages for any person if they has knowledge in as much languages as they can handle to learn but if only it will be a mandatory law for every country to include english in their school basic subjects then for sure the wholeworld can understand each other and no need to ask somebody to translate it for them because english is would be a universal language and only those people didn´t learn english will remains ignorant of english...so no need to talk to them if they don´t can understand even the universal language that everybody need to learn. as Melay had said she did help herself understand tagalog by reading tagalog komiks and that´s a good idea because our tagalog comics artist are really good in that...comics maybe a waste of money for some but it does help people becomes familiar with everyday languages of a country they were living at. i also find it easier to learn from comics in communicating with other people because comics is a good form of learning a language you are not familiar with. may natutuhan rin tayo kay Melay na hindi sapat ang matuto lang ng english dahil hindi lahat ng tao sa pinas nakakaintindi ng inglis. pero nakatulong rin sa anak ko ang hindi marunong ng tagalog dahil hindi sya basta nakikipag-usap kung kani-kanino na lang na kinakausap sya sa tagalog na gusto lang naman syang kulitin o asarin, dahil hindi sa nilalait ko ang mga pilipino pero minsan mga taong walang mabuting breeding ang tanging alam lang nila ay mga bastos na salita tuloy nakakawalang gana makipag-usap sa kanila kaya mabuti pang ignorin mo na lang mga taong walang alam na kabutihan asal dahil lumaking kasalamuha ay mga basagulero, gumon sa bisyo at halang ang mga bituka. sometimes its better to live in a country where all people are civilized, where everyone understand what is respect, where people even can´t speak of the same language you know but understand you will thru your moves and action. it is good to learn other languages but it does occupied a lot of space in our brain and that makes our brain no longer capable to stored more valuable data on it and it affect our capacity to learn more on more important subjects like science, modern technologies, medicines, math and what else"invention"that could help many people if we could invent things helpful for human needs or restored our vanishing natural resources because of our negligence to care for it and do something to save it. SK is ahead of RP because USA has full support to SK economy the same with Japan, but once USA left them the same USA did to RP for sure SK and Japan will also goes down to where they use to be a poor country just like RP. RP is not really a poor country,it only becomes poor because most of its people are so lazy to work harder with the 90 million populace only 20%of them work hard enough all the rest spent their times in gambling, gimmicks, makes more babies instead of planting more foods so they have enough food for hungry populace they all depends for the gov´t assistance to bring them food on their table or finds stagnant foods in garbbages bin or becomes a beggar in the streets. sabi ng mga turistang namasyal sa ating bansa, ang ganda raw ng ating bansa, kaya lang karamihan sa pilipino ay tamad at sa halip na gumawa ng makabuluhan kapakipakinabang ng bagay sinasayang ang mga oras sa pagsusugal, inuman walang hanggan pulos pagpapasarap lang at pagwala ng makain sisisihin ang gobyerno, kikidnapin ang turista, magnanakaw sa mga namumuhunan o manghoholdap ng bangko o kaya maghihingi na limos o kaya mangungutang sa kapitbahay at paghindi pinautang magagalit. kaya kung mahirap ang pinas iyan ay dahil sa tatamad-tamad ang mga pilipino. ang tsina kahit bilyon ang populasyon nag export pa sila ng produkto ng kanilang agrukultura dahil masipag silang magtanim. ang Thailand dati hindi marunong magtanim ng palay ngayon sila na ang export ng bigas around the world. hindi uunlad ang pinas kung karamihan sa mamamayan nito tanga na tamad pa! mixrace, alam ko kung bakit indi alam ni melay mag english....it is her parents pero indi pa rin yan excuse...why for 15 years sya nagaral sa pinas imposible wala syang nakalamuhang pinoy o nagsasalita ng tagalog see the point....unless kung pinili nya indi magsalita...
kung ang mga anak mo indi marunong magsalita ng wikang tagalog o kaya indi mo tinuruan it is your choice...pero eto lang kahit anung gawin mo pinoy ka pa rin kung pinili mong iwala ang pagkapinoy mo sa kadahilanan na indi mo tinuruan ng filipino ang anak mo again it is your choice... who says it is mandatory...to learn english dialect...for your info spanish is the most popular dialect in the world and even americans learn to speak spanish...most of the country learn english because of economics only. But i do agree with you learning english is advantage and use it in daily life because as I said it was infused that english is good (which I can say it sucks). Sa sinabi mo na maganda na hindi natuto magsalita ang anak mo ng tagalog para indi tuksuin o asarin. This is what I can say what do you think of your children...what will be his/her upbringing, ngayon pa lang bata pa ang anak mo marunong na mag-ignore na ang reality kalahating pilipino sya anu pakaya kung lumaki yan (sana wag naman maging matapobre sa kapwa pinoy paglumaki). anu ang magiging guidelines ng anak mo which is good and bad in the society kung indi nya maexperience sa buhay nya ganun kapaligiran nya.you will not be there for the rest of your children life. Did you watch discovey channel or even national geographics? a person that have a high IQ and a good brain have one talent to grasp other dialects.learning and understand other culture is a manifestation of how well educated you are and well develop your brain are. our brain is capable of acquiring of a lot of knowledge it is up to a person on how manipulate and make use of what she/he learn and make it better. Do you really think that the other country is much more civilized than us.dont be such hypocrit your not only putting yourself to shame but also all your family ahead of you. (although to some extent tama ka) pero eto lang masasabi ko pare-pareha lang ang ibang bansa sa atin may mga parte na magugulo at indi maresolve-resolve na prob.just want to give you an example japan napagandang bansa mayaman..pero ang prob nila is child prostitution much worst satin...why search it in the internet. Are you really sure if there are no USA the SK and japan will be poor? Why not search in the history first. And if 80% of the filipino ay tamad sa sinabi mo...tumingin ka sa salamin...matanung ko lang kasi grabe panglait mo sa kapwa mo filipino eh.bakit nag-asawa ka ng foreigner? binasa mo ba muna ang mensahe mo bago mo nai-post?"si Melay hindi marunong mag-english"...? are you in a hurry that you didn´t notice what you´re doing here in her blogsite, siguro hindi ka pa kumakain kaya nahilo ang pc mo...joking only!
well,i do want my children to learn tagalog, but they have no one here to practice with other than myself and that´s for them boring and it just adds additional subject to their subjects that they really need to learn in the school here, for they need to learn the languages of other countries next to this country as it is required in their school. my children even complaining why they need to learn a lot of things at early ages when they still want to enjoy playing and enjoy life while they are young, school here are more advance compares to school in RP though no award givings after the school end,the school children has to study hard enough otherwise they will repeated again and again if they failed to reach the passing grade and that cause big embarassment not only for the children but for the parents as well,so to lighten their heavy loads,it is better not to force them to learn tagalog, anyway what´s so important for them is to learn and master their father´s official languages as it is the one can provides them a better opportunity to find job with a better salary,if they went back to RP and seek for a job there, maybe their salary not even enough for their needs what more to help care for me and my hubby when we are old,i even felt sorry for my relatives back there, even just to build a decent house for themselves they can not, because the money they makes is not even enough for their foods. here you can easily find a job with a decent salary as long as you are citizen of this country while in RP only those have connections with politicians can have a better positions with benefits and bonuses. maybe if RP already becomes a firstworld country then it would be good for my family to settled there for good but while RP still under invasions by moros, tsinos, who else? It´s better they live here,no headache and the people are more civilized, respect your privacy,no beggars,no drunkards,no corruptions,no problem. i didn´t meant to put down all filipinos because there are few of them are still workinghard and doing what is right,i´d just hates to see many of those strong men and women spent their times gambling instead doing something worth their precious time. by the way those filipinos didn´t desires to go out of the country, they don´t need to learn english especially if they are not comfortable with it or don´t have someone to talk with in english, better they spent their time planting sweet potatoes it will help them survives the hunger. one thing is really wrong in RP,even a 3 yrs.old child can purchased in any store a liquior, cigarrette or any alcoholic drinks and even illegal-drugs. here if any store or establishment doing that, owners expected a closures of their business and pay a stiif fines. in RP illegal-drugs are everywhere, cigarrette and alcoholic drinks are sold everywhere even to unlicensed stores. there is to many things to get rid of if RP want to becomes a firstworld country. first get rid of products that drives the youth crazy and makes them becomes useless. the gov´t benefits a lot from sin tax that´s why they have no teeth to implimented the law. here the law is powerful than sin. kung hindi lang ako naawa sa mga matinong pilipino ipagdarasal ko na lang na sana lindolin ng pagkalakas-lakas ang buong pinas para mamamatay na mga masasamang damo kaya lang baka ang mabubuting tao ang mamamatay at ang mga masasama ang hindi mamamatay-matay dahil ililigtas sila ng demonyo para makapagkalat pa ng kademonyohan...mahal na mahal pa naman ng demonyo ang mga kampon nya.

mixrace i rest my case with this argument...i feel sorry for you...really bakit ganun na ba kalinis yung bansa ng asawa mo?if it is switzerland I agree with you or sweden and norway aside from my mentioned country i dont think so...bakit wala din bang masasama dyan?
you know basi sa nabasa ko sa mga comment mo..i really feel sorry for you correct me if im wrong but i think nagasawa ka ng foreigner para makatakas sa kahirapan ng bansa natin..it is really very easy way to escape... pilpino ka pa rin kung pinili mo kalimutan yan its up to you... kung sa bagay yan ang trait ng pilipino na magturuan at maghanap ng rason at magturo ng kasalanan ng iba...but it is not that end of the world para sa pinoy. nice taking to you...

i am in Sweet-sir-land(Switzerland)yes there are a few asshole(please pardon my nasty words)that also run around here sometimes but security personnel are truly excellent in their jobs,so they could easily catch them and the gov´t officials are not corrupt and every planned projects has to be voted by residents if more people agree on it,then it will be done quickly not wait for decades to finish it....one thing sometimes i told my children oh!we are now in "shit-sir-land" when animals wastes are being sprayed in farmland, you need to closed your nose and breath only on your mouth that way you won´t smell much the nasty, crazy, yucky smell of it...but it does help a lot to keep the crops grow very healthy.
swiss people are already used to it,and i had to be used to it as well,if not then i should live there in RP but with out my family with me then its not joyful enough to lived there. i think RP´s problem is the way our gov´t tolerates illegal traders do their business in RP.Selling garbbages products for public consumption does a great loss and damages to Philippines residents and that makes many of citizens becomes useless, worthless and destroyed our dignity as a nation. by the way,i didn´t married a foreigner to run away from poverty in RP(i am not that poor,i can work there and live alright if i want to but with too many mouth to be feed my earnings won´t be enough to support them all)i did marry him so i would have a family and besides living in his country is a great privileges and opportunity for me and for our children,as it is like living in the first floor of heaven....really. even i am granted to be a swiss citizen,i am well known for being a filipina as my brown skin still show that i am not an original citizen of this country, ika nga sa wika natin sampid lang ako dito. well,i hope someday you would visit this country and see the difference the way the people live their life and how the gov´t officals here perform their duties and responsibilities. its truly different from RP and that´s maybe the reason why filipinos thinking going backward instead going forward, because our gov´t trying hard to do the same USA doing when our country is not well-developed yet nor rich enough to handle the gross budget it needed for election automation that truly drain RP´s coffer, does Taiwan ever spent that much to purchase any RP´s product? and after the election those poll machines will becomes outdated, malfunction and damages by several visits of climates changes and then it need to be fix, another budget again just for fixing it. RP wasted too much resources on elections that really makes other countries laughed out loud on filipinos. sana kung sasakupin man tayo ng ibang lahi(muslim world)iyon ay para sa ikabubuti ng ating bansa, para mawala na ang mga alak, sigarilyo, droga, sugal, sabong at kung anu-ano pang sumisira sa mamamayan dahilan para maging mahirap ang ating bansa dahil nasira na ng bisyo ang kaisipan ng mamamayan. kaya kung susuriin mo bagsak na sa averages level ng normal na tao ang kaisipan ng karamihan sa mamamayan ng pinas dahil sa dulot ng mga bisyo na sumisira sa kalusugan at kaisipan ng tao. sana lang magwagi ang kabutihan sa kasamaan kung hindi, paghuhukom ng Diyos na lang ang tanging makakasugpo ng kasamaan na talamak na sa ating bansa. dito mas marami pa naman ang mabuti keysa masasama kaya tiyak matagal pa naman bago hukuman ng Diyos ang bansang ito. sabi sa librong Apokalipsis ang pagbuhos ng parusa ng Diyos ay unti-unti lang naman kung saan ibinuhos ng anghel ng Diyos ang galit at poot ay doon lang magkakaroon ng grabeng pagdurusa at kaguluhan. so we have to watch out for that...God is watching this planet and His angels has to do His command. have nice day "Wenden" that´s a beautiful name! melay, saan ka ab lumaki> saan ka nag-aral? even if you use english at home hindi sapat na reason yan to be lost in your own language..sa curriculum natin we study PILIPINO and plus the native language comes naturally to us kasi napaligiran ka nito kahit na may english speaking policy sa bahay nyo.in my elementary days, i learned tagalog & english in school and speak my native Cebuano tongue hanggang ngayon i can still speak the three languages and now i'm learning my fourth.the more languages you know the better. well anyways, your blog is about nationalism and the use of the native language,i agree to some comments here na what is more important ay yong ginagawa mo para sa bayan hindi lang yong mga sinsabi mo..to show love for our country is simply being responsible to every action we make no matter how small like garbage disposal..even I wonder really kung bakit tayong mga Pinoy pag nasa ibang bansa sinusunod natin batas at ordinansa nila at hindi natin magawa ito sa ating bansa. para sa yo melay master the tagalog it is helpful also...
Melay, you don´t need to lear or master tagalog or other dialect,as one of these days all english speaking countries will launch an all out war to non-english speaking countries, they will wipe them from the face of the earth ´til no one that didn´t speak english would ever exist.
wouldn´t it be possible? again just kidding! wouldn´t it be good if Philippines would makes english as its official languages?
those can not speak english jailed them in one of the island of either to one of the three island of RP (LVM) and only those can write, speak and understand english will be given freedom to come out from jail. observing lifes of filipinos,i´d notice only those people has knowledge on english languages has more opportunity to find jobs in local or abroads those can not understand english at all are living like an idiots or ignoramos...isn´t it a sign that english is the key to success? Japan,SK,Germany,French and other first world countries will not becomes powerful if their leaders can not understand english at all,it is the english language that has the power to unites countries of the same interest they want to reach. if japan didn´t understand what english speaking countries ask them to do,they´ve been wipe out long ago.If germans wasn´t given a chance to migrate in english speaking countries there will be no germans ever exist up to these days because Nazi had caused too much emotional and physical pains to their victims. i dream that someday everyone will only speak english...by the way in heaven it is english going to be use not any other languages so those who want to enter Kingdom of God,its for your own self benefits to learn english if you dream to enter Heaven and decided to stay there forever. and for those wants to stay in this planet of evil no need to learn english, for all of you destines to be burn....joking only! crush ko si kc concepcion
ako crush ko si heart evangelista
puro kayo crush.ahehe
hahahha ako crush ko si John Lloyd =)
the fact is that we can come up with a whole ton of justification for anything. Eloquence, though, will not hide the fact that we Filipinos have completely lost our national identity.
We have generations, past and present, who cannot speak straight Tagalog, Waray, Cebuano, or Hiligaynon without a smattering of English, so we laugh and justify it and say, it's Taglish or whatever, and then scholarly say, but there is no such thing as pure Tagalog, we have chinese words, malay words, etc., etc., in our dialects. What I would like to come out is a study on why, in our part of the world, Japan and Korea, who "do not speak English and who do not educate in English" have fared much better and do not have to send their English speaking college graduates abroad to wipe the butts of thumb-marking Arabs' kids ? A presidentiable said he's going to put one college graduate per home. Great. One college graduate who cannot even speak grammatical, syntax-correct English who will have that diploma on his wall and an eye on Saudi or Singapore because the same presidentiable cannot guarantee he will have a job or a career in his own country ? Give me a break. if those countries export products,RP export manpower and for that we don´t contributes pollutions as much as those industrial countries doing, their people may not going all around the globe looking for a job but what will happened if no one would buy their products no more, they too will have a heavy economic breakdown.
many countries still crazy about modern technos but soon they will realized they all are fooling themselves thinking it help them reach those dreams with out knowing it ruins not only life of being a normal people but life of this planet being a very sensitive nature. with so many things mankind has invented not much of them help preserves natures instead it ruins our planet earth´s natural beauty and makes it no longer safe to live at. so what we can expect is a massive calamities cause by mankind´s fault and we filipinos partly got blames for that because we are only user of their stupid inventions but because we patronized their hazardous products we are partly to be blame for being idiot and ignorant. by the way it is a blessing that many filipinos has opportunity to serves other country you should not be ashamed of it as its our pride to serve them and that´s makes us more unique compares to them, for even Jesus Christ came to this world not to be serve but to serve mankind(feeding the hungry, cured the sick, washed His disciples feet,etc.etc.)and the filipinos doing that not only for money but to let the wholeworld knows that filipinos are truly good at any jobs they were assigned at....so please stop having a self-pity,instead be proud of being filipino nevermind if we have a corrupt politicians that means our country is a rich nation that´s why there are too much money to be corrupt and that benefits not only our politicians but the countries were our corrupt politicians invested their stolen wealth and beleived me those countries were so thankful for that because it help their economy booms! For that they could hires more filipinos to serves them and send to RP what their country owed to RP. life, wealth and natures is a cycle,at times we our country is down other countries are on top,at times our country on top other countries are on its bottom...please face the fact that we were destines to lived our life this way otherwise God could just wipe out all of us and let no any man live ever again. i don´t envy those countries you mentioned for they too has economic, politics, security problem with in their country. there is no more safe or nice place to live at because everywhere in this planet, evil people can entered even to a very sacred place only belong to Holy God. we live in evil planet, where evil wants to be the ruler and the only thing we can stop corruption, poverty, wars, injustice, hunger and chaos is to ask God to put an end to these world of evil....that means death for every living being!Amen. Give me a break and stop bringing in the Name of Jesus Christ into this issue. That's apples and oranges, man.
Jesus Christ came to fulfill His Father's will, not to serve mankind. You don't even know your Scriptures. This is about national identity. This writer is justifying her ability to speak "good" English. Well, I found out about "good" English the hard way. I live here in this freakin' United States of America where they SPEAK English, and proud of the fact that I speak better English than most Filipinos, Indians, or even Latinos and guess what ? Many of these so-called "liberal, easy-going" Americans still show a face of concern once they look at me and see my brown skin and my name and try to make themselves articulate because they think (1) I will not understand them, or (2) THEY will not understand me. And when we do talk, me using correct idiom and good grammar to the best of my Benedictine education, I still hear some of them rudely refer to my accent, like they don't have accents themselves ! This is about loving your country AND your language or dialect, not being proud to be a world-class slave with the dignified title of domestic helper or driver or something else other than what parents worked themselves to death so their children can graduate freaking college. We can't forever console ourselves with the fact that we're "worldwide domestics" contributing to the betterment of others, when we can't even pull our own country out of the quagmire it's in. The next time you sit down on your toilet bowl and you see it's made in Japan think of Jagna, Bohol and the fact that that toilet bowl may have been dug up from the placer mine there, brought to Japan, made into a toilet bowl, and then sold to you, the Filipino, who owned the soil from which it was taken, and then face the mirror and say how proud you are to be a world class servant. Didn't Jose Rizal say: Ang di marunong magmahal sa sariling wika, ay masahol pa sa malansang isda ? So, where does Jose Rizal fit now in the grand scheme of things. The textbooks ? Dr.JPR didn´t even used english as medium for all the books he wrote, for several of it are written in spanish.
the reasons why our country fails to becomes fully developed because of our failures to have enough self-discipline and self determination plus our incapabilities to becomes united as saying goes,"a country whose people are divided is weak"we are divided by politicians whose concerned are only to enrich themselves not the country as a whole. how many leaders RP has ever thought of country first before their so called self-interest,most of our leaders are all after to what they can get from our country´s coffer not what they can "put-in" to our country´s coffer! our OFW´s workhard abroad trying hard to remitt as much as they can, while our gov´t just spent the resources over useless, worthless things that makes our country vulnerable to corruption and shame. Japan,SK,USA,Germany,France etc. they are progressives country because their gov´t and their people are well-disciplined and patronized their country´s native produce while filipinos are all into imported products for that it does drain not only our brains but our finances as well. if RP is such a poor country that is because of what the filipinos make it to be....we didn´t strives hard to becomes superior,we are contented of being underdogs,we didn´t patronized our products to help our fellow countrymen have enough jobs instead we bought imported products to adds more to our ever growing jobless filipinos. be thankful that some of filipinos can speak and understand english, somehow it helps them find jobs abroad, because our very own country couldn´t produce jobs for its people. our gov´t failures to provides jobs for its people with-in the country is one of the reasons why our country failed to becomes first world and plus the growing undisciplined filipinos and strangers alike that living like a wild pigs ruins our country´s paradise like beauty. uunlad lang ang pinas kung bawat mamamayan nito ay mayroon disiplina sa sarili at may determinasyon mapaunlad ang kanilang kabuhayan ng hindi kailangan lumabas ng bansa. dati naman sagana ang mga pilipino at hindi naman gaanong naghihirap ng husto, noong dumami lang ang mga intsik at muslim sa bansa saka dumami rin ang krimen, droga, patayan at kung anu-ano pang kaguluhan. minalas yata ang mga pilipino sa kamay ng mga intsik at mga muslim dahil mga intsik at demonyong muslim lang ang yumaman at ang mga pilipino ang nawalan ng lupa´t kabuhayan. all of this are part of history and the only way filipinos can get out from poverty if they can get rid of all the chinese and muslim people that makes this country poor, ugly and full of shames...but with the fact that more than 40 million of RP population are chineses, indians, indonesians, libyans, syrians, malaysians, koreans it is impossible to send them back to China,Malaysia,India,Indonesia,Libya,Lebanon, etc. lalo na´t nagustuhan na rin nilang manirahan sa pinas dahil sagana sa magaganda´t mababangong bulaklak. i think RP destines to be a thirdworld unless it will be ruled by a king that can get rid of any undesirables aliens, improves its infrastructures and built strongest army to guard it against any invaders only then it will becomes progressives as Japan or SK. agree...pare....salamat may isang katulad mo na parehang pagiisip....
hoy mixrace, tumigil ka na nga sa kaka english. ang sagwa eh. wrong grammar ka naman. kakahiya!!!!
mixrace, tama ba to?
I think that some people miss the point of the article. You focus too much on attacking the writer for the choice of language she communicates with. It's what she knows and she utilizes it to the best of her abilities.
The point is, while you can definitely show patriotism by using Filipino, it is not the only way to show it. Our environment now makes us have to adjust to the needs our country demands. As individual Filipinos choose to live/work elsewhere or our country opens itself up to jobs that require interactions with people abroad, we need to learn other languages. It has been a trademark trait of the Filipino to adjust to the needs of others. Our sense of hospitality is proof enough for that. Now you have to question yourselves, what other traits are we holding on to? What other sources of pride can we boast of? The question is, what is our identity? Who is the Filipino? *** On a personal note, I find it very insulting for either language (English or Filipino) to be mixed with another. While there are certainly words that you can't translate from one language to another, I think that you should stick to one language per sentence. Not using the language properly is downright disrespect to it. As for writing, you have a keyboard in front of you. Use it properly. Saying "araw2" is just plain lazy. It goes to show what kind of person you are. |
