Friday, July 30. 2010Losing to thieves on the loose
There's bad luck, and then there's stupidity, and then there's the particularly unfortunate combination of both. You know that quote about the universe conspiring for your heart's desire? Sometimes, it seems the universe does conspire. Against you.
While I'm not really a material girl, I do value my things. Mostly for sentimental reasons. Sometimes when I'm bored, I look through my bag and reminisce about each item's origin. I take pride in being more street smart than most people, I walk fast, keep my things where I can see them, and for the most part, attached to me. I once got scolded in college for not removing my bag from my lap the entire class. But could I be blamed? Valuables often went missing, even on campus. I've lost things before, once, a wallet that fell out of my pocket in a movie house. I can't remember what movie it was, but I remember I had a ticket to RENT in that wallet. It was free from some goodie bag and it had South Park characters on it. I also lost my phone in high school, it had fallen out of my bag in one classroom. Mang Jose, a dear fellow, found me and returned it to me saying he knew it was my seat where he found the phone. I had also lost a wallet previous to that, at the 2001 U.P. fair. Someone thought it would be a brilliant idea to open my bag, and everything fell to the dusty ground. Also lost in that incident were my friend's phone, and her shoe. It's funny now, but at the time, believe me, it was hard to laugh. I've been held up, too, and I remember it clearly. Everything went in slow motion, and I glimpsed the thief’s eyes which were red and looked even more afraid than I was. Other than those incidents, I haven't lost anything else, until last Friday. I was watching Arigato Hato at their send-off gig at The Collective in Makati. If you haven't been there, you should know that it's the sort of place where thieves would find better luck stealing anyone else's stuff, not mine. I was taking videos for the article I was planning to write. My friend got his camera from my bag, where I had been keeping it safe, then he went off to take some pictures. He returned as the song was ending - it was Mister Music Maker, then I pressed stop on the office-issued phone I was using to video, slid the phone in my bag which I had placed on the speaker platform behind me and probably said something to my friend. This sounds very dimwitted, but the next thing I knew, my bag was gone. Common sense told me whoever took it had left the scene (and the scenesters who all seemed to enjoying the show), but the part of me that believes in Santa Claus was hoping it was a friend playing a prank. It wasn't. It's been almost a week, and my bag has most definitely disappeared. As for its contents, they've probably been sold, or disposed of. The painful part is, my treasure has most likely been trashed. It's almost as painful as the fact that I've resorted to speaking in cliches. At this point, you should stop reading if you hate cliches. There's no use crying over spilt milk, so I didn't cry. But, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Or better, get a tequila shot. In this case, I wrote about it and came up with this letter. Dear person who stole my bag, I'm pretty sure it was that office-issued phone you wanted. Part of me wishes you had just asked for it instead of getting my whole bag. I mean, that was a pretty huge bag, man. Or woman. You know, we used to trade bags to make character sketches. If you were to make a character sketch of me, you hit gold. Now you know my six names, the street where I grew up on, my father's residence. In case of emergency, call him. No, really. He's a doctor. You also know what I had for lunch yesterday, it's written on the receipt in my wallet. well, one of the receipts in my wallet. As you can see, I keep all my receipts. Not particularly to keep track of expenses, but to save paper. I'm rather fond of writing miniscule notes to people. And postcards. There are pictures of those in the phone-the one that caught your attention. You'll also see pictures of the person those postcards are for, he sent me a few, for my eyes only. Stop looking. Back to what I had for lunch. It was Kangkong Singapura, sounds fancy, right? You see, the canteen at my place of work isn't called Creative Concepts for nothing. Oh yes, you can also see that I work for a website. You also have my media ID, my school ID, and my alumni ID. Those are in my other wallet, the pretty plastic one, with girls doing laundry. There's a picture of my daughter in there, look at her smile. This morning she asked me, mama, why did the bad person steal your bag? I told her that the bad person might have been hungry. Well, if you were hungry, there isn't much to eat in there. You can see, I only have around 500 pesos in there, and my latest ATM receipt will tell you I don't have much left to withdraw. Would you like my ATM pin? It's only four digits, and it's the bank-released pin. I never got around to changing it. I also never got around to shaking the tobacco out of my bag - pardon the mess. Oh yes, there's a barely smoked pack of cigarettes in there, and a lighter that says Pinoy ako forever. I usually stick vegetarian stickers on my lighter, but you got that one before I could do that. It would probably have told you that fish are friends, not food. About that recorder, it looks like nothing but it's got a mean microphone. I used that for countless interviews - from my thesis on intercultural conflict management to recent things for work. You could go through the contents if you like, there are some monitoring tracks of dzBB, an interview with Noel Cabangon, Jess Santiago, and you can also listen to the opening of the Active Vista film festival. Ronnie Lazaro's speech is particularly funny, and Lourd de Veyra's delivery does justice to his biting humor like no one else's can. Go on, listen, you can't eat it but it will fill your mind. By the way, that recorder may look cheap, it can only hold 512mb. That's why there are only 11 tracks in there, which I've been listening to on repeat since March. The last one by Mike Benedicto is the most-played. Listen to it and tell me you can't stop. That recorder has a name, too. it's Leigh-Cherie, and it was a mothers' day gift to me from my mama, in 2005. It's been places and so has that bag. So I guess you know I like to watch shows a lot. The tickets to Halaw and Sampaguita are there, and most recently, CATS. There's also a complimentary ticket for the Manilart fair at the end of the month. You should go, it'll be great. That ticket came from Egay Fernandez, by the way, so if you bump into him at the fair, say thank you. It's only polite. You also have the keys to my house, and my sheep ring. I put it there because my fingers are too thin for rings. You can't tell from the photos of me - they're all ID pictures. But you have my sister's graduation pictures - she's pretty, isn't she? I used to always tell her to make sure her bag is in front of her. I guess I should have told myself that. But you see, I was tired, my back hurt, and I just wanted to take a video of Arigato Hato to embed in the article I was planning to write about the event. Right after Mister Music Maker, Michael got his camera from my bag, he went to take some pictures. I pressed stop on the video recorder and put the phone in my bag, then I guess that's when you quickly grabbed it and ran. Or maybe you didn't run. There were so many people and it should've been easy to disappear in the crowd. Before I forget, you might also want to watch the videos in there. The lighting is almost always too dark but the audio is excellent. You'll see lots of Outerhope and some Arigato Hato, but then you knew that already. There's also a video of my daughter playing at home. Whoever you are, I hope you're happy. You see, I am. Despite the fact that I now have to deal with the inconvenience that comes with lost valuables, my life is pretty good. But then, you weren't asking. P.S. In case you feel guilty and wish to return any or all of the above, well, call my Ma. Her number is there, in the phone. Not the one you wanted, the nondescript one. You could also just reply to her last message to me, I'm sure there's one. She worries about me, in fact you can see there's a message there about my lungs and liver. I wish you could realize that that's all you need, people who love you and care about you. I also wish you weren't so mean. Or desperate. I don't know. Who knows. Maybe you'll sell the phone and feed some hungry kids. That would be nice. Trackbacks

You look so pretty and pleasant on your profile photo.
I hope whoever took your purse, I mean your bag (as I'm sure it was pretty huge judging at how you described its contents), will have a big heart to return it. That is, if ever this human being goes to this blog site....and reads your message. I also lost my cell phone on my latest visit to Manila four months ago. I was told, "charge it to experience" when you lose stuffs like cell phone there. The guy even called back when I called my cell number and gave our landline number and address. He said he would return it after his route that day. Never heard from him again. So, lots of luck to you...! i would like to share your post to my daughter who was heldup 3 days back at Philcoa on her way to UP and lost her 1 month old mobile and to my son who dropped his high school mobile grad gift inside an FX going to his class in UST two days back.
i am sure your post will lighten their feeling. i feel frustrated because i am an OFW and can't even give a fatherly touch to my kids. however, i promised to them that they will new mobiles on christmas. Thanks for your comment, Willie, I'm glad this post is good for something other than my own coping with the incident. I hope your kids find it helpful.
take care lagi uy
ayaw compyansa walang magnanakaw kung walang mananakaw I guess we had same fate. the theft took my pouch in which includes my passport, TIN, SSS, philhealth id's,my 3 atm's,picture id's,and 3 thousand pesos.
i did not noticed my bag was opened by that theft when i was buying something in starmall.I was really really sad.better that i have 1 hundred pesos for my fare back going to rizal.i hope that whosoever took my pouch would eventually happy because im happy now.i lost something but it didnt matter to me probably that person who took my pouch is in need and i hope he/ she will change for better because i am working hard for my living.i hope he/ she change for better and finally that money will help him or her. nice piece pero sana isinulat mo ito in pilipino (baka sakali mas lalong maantig ang kalooban ng kumuha) kung maintindihan niyang mabuti ang message na gusto mong iparating sa kanya.
My daughter lost her cell phone on the first day of her school in FEU. I think it is on June 16, 2010 to be exact.
She left her bag with "new found friends" or "blockmates" and voila, her phone disappeared. Sad to say, cases like these are meant to teach everyone not to be too trusting. As for the chance of recovering things of value, it just like hoping for a raise. Cheers! Thanks for the comment, sir. I am working on becoming a paranoid android. Cheers!
a couple of thieves stole my phone in a crowded mrt train several months ago. these were professionals preying on people like us who work hard to earn a living.
looks like there is an epidemic of petty thievery around town which do not get reported. the only stories that get to the front pages are those involving people who sadly get killed or hurt fighting off these criminals. PNoy shud begin to move on from wangwangs to ensuring safety in the streets. Hey, Lapena. Can you stop writing like you were born in 19th century England. Maybe when you do, you'll never get robbed again. Seems to me you like living in your own world, not very savvy or worldly wise at all like you describe yourself.
Thanks for reading, Yossi. I'm actually taking speech lessons from my best friend who happens to be a drug lord, I'm sure that no one would dare rob me then.
Ahem, okay, so what do you expect will come out of this? I bet the thief would take time to surf the net and read your blog--that is, if he would even care at all.
Well, I didn't write this with any hope that the thief would read it, so I don't expect to get my things back this way. All I expect is that strangers like you will stumble upon it and it will make them think. Or comment anonymously.
me style pa nga kunyare elderly magpapahatid sa 'yo ibaba siya sa lugar na pupuntahan then pagdating nyo dun me naka abang pala 3some holdap na

Very subtle. Funny and enlightening. Very positive.
I am not underestimating yung magnanakaw. And yes, with another bag in tow. Marami namang klaseng magnanakaw. May maganda at mayaman din. Tulad ni Winona Ryder.
My line of work require me to travel on many continents and countries. So I collect coins and money bills from the countries I'd been. I have a very impressive collections through the years and I put all collections into 2 thick albums. It was one of my prime hobbies, the other one is collecting wines. Anyway I check in one of 4-star hotel in Makati and that weekend I played a round of golf with a few acquaintances and we have fun after. To make the story short, prior to checking out, I noticed that my collection albums were gone and of course, I reported this to the hotel management, but 'till now I never heard from them. I like the Philippines, people are nice and friendly. They always smile but one low down point with this country, there are many thieves. I guess poverty and lack of work forces them to commit crimes but I've been to other countries, which I left a camera inside a restroom in a train station and after 3 hrs. I came back and the camera is still hanging. Don't make me wrong there are cities and countries that have many thieves but do you want me to compare you to Soweto and Lagos? Mexico has many drug lords and many crimes, but thievery is not one of them.
Hi Cruise!
You can file a complain to our Dept of Tourism. They can help you on that and they will compel the hotel to reimburse you of your losses... BWAAAA.....HAK HAK HAK HAK HAK.....AKO ANG HARI NG MAGNANAKAW. LAHAT KAMING MGA MAGNANAKAW AY DEMONYO. SIYAM NA TAON AKONG NAGNAKAW SA KABAN NG BAYAN AT BILYONG BILYONG PESOS ANG NINAKAW KO AT NASA IBANG BANSA NA ANG IBANG NINAKAW KONG PERA NG TAO. HINANABUL AKO NGAYON NI BINIGNU AQUINO SA MGA NINAKAW KONG PERA. SA TINGIN BA NINYO ISASAULI KO PA YON? NUNGKA...NOPE.... OBER MY DED BADI. HOY...BINIGNU MAGHABUL SA TAMBUL KONG GOSTO MO HANGAL......
Ma'am, may oras pa kayo para mag internet? Kumusta naman po ang pagpila sa airport?
Hi,
Sorry about your lost. I love your letter address to that person; it made us realise that there are things that may be lost and thankful that despite the loss, you are in a much better stance/state than that of the thief. Sana lang that thief would use the money selling your stuff to good use but then again, we are aware that he/she will use this to get drugs and then steal again to maintain this habit. Thanks, Joy. I know nothing about the thief, so I wouldn't assume that he or she does drugs.
One time in QC, i and my gf boarded an fx taxi just after the last passenger in the front seat got off. Once we're seated, i noticed a mobile phone was left behind by that passenger. But then the driver immediately grabbed it and ran his fx. I thought he would be guilty of doing it. Instead, he felt proud that he'd got a new phone saying, " yes, mabibigyan ko na rin anak ko ng celfon." What an asshole!
Ang mali ko i didn't bother to report that fx driver to the LTO or kung anong ahensiya ng gobyerno dapat.
this is the problem in our society and this is because of poverty. another thing, the visibility of police officers are very poor that's why these thieves are so confident that they can do the crime anytime, anywhere no law enforcer is around to arrest them.
- install more cctv cameras all over metro manila and increase police visibility, these will solve that problem. Unless the PNP personnel wont be reoriented with their tasks, no changes will be seen in our problemtic society..most of the time they are only guarding establishment that can give them extra income to support their lavished life style.
-remind also the congress to sit down and tackle the National ID System.. Police Visibility is not actually a very good idea. Bakit?
I suggest, police should be in plain clothes, should not have any gesture as a police officer at all. Yon lang ang effective way para maka huli ng masasamang tao in action. "I take pride in being more street smart than most people"
Fallacy, your bag got stolen so you cannot possibly be 'more street smart than most people'.. Thank you for your comment sir, however I disagree. It's not a fallacy. The time my bag got stolen is the exception in the many times I could've been robbed, not the rule.
maybe its time thievery should be met by force. decapitate one hand from any thief that is caught. o kaya hampasin ng martilyo yung kamay ng hinayupak na mga magnanakaw na iyon. magreklamo na sila sa CHR for all we farkin care.
Nakakatakot ata yun.
I read somewhere (I don't know if this story is true.) that the first name the Spaniards gave to the Philippines was "Isla de Ladrones" which translates to "Island of Thieves". The story goes that after checking out the islands that these Spanish explorers just "discovered", they were flabbergasted to find out upon their return to their galleons that the natives had already ransacked their ships. Thus, the name.
I doubt to believed rp history by the fact such were written by those spanish colonizer
Islas Ladrones was the name given to the Mariana Islands, not the Philippines.
Magellan and Pigafetta were actually relieved that they received much better treatment from the people here compared to the natives in the Marianas... Hi, Melay! Kudos to you for remembering Manong Jose and his kind heart... Sir Isidro, I'm honored to find you here. Thank you! I don't think anyone could ever forget him.
The name "Island of Thieves" was given to the present-day Guam. Mariana Islands is composed of different island.
Ke London, Paris, or New York ka magpunta, merong mga bag thieves. And please, hwag kang MAGSINUNGALING! "Part of me wishes you had just asked for it instead of getting my whole bag." Yeah right, as if you will do so if a total stranger asked for your phone. But now we know, next time, we will just come up to you and ask something of value in exchange for not taking everything. All this article is about making YABANG the contents of your bag.
Philippines is at its worst in terms of pickpocket and snatchers, especially in the capital region. Its true we are WORSE compared to other countries. Ingat na lang. Be thankful that you were not held up and your life was not put in danger.
Thanks for your comment, I am very thankful I wasn't held up and my life wasn't put in danger. I don't think we're worse compared to other countries, though. There's thievery everywhere, on different levels of visibility.
YANG MGA MAGNANAKAW NA YAN HUWAG NINYO SILANG MURAHIN. MGA ALIPORES KO YAN. GINAGAYA LANG NILA ANG AMO NILANG SI GLORIA ARROYONG DEMONYO. AKO ANG HARI NG KADILIMAN.....KAYA SILA NAGNANAKAW DAHIL SILA'Y GANID SA KAYAMANAN NG IBA. HINDI KAMI MAHIHIRAP NA KAGAYA NINYO MGA HANGAL. MAGPAPARAMI PA AKO NG DEMONYONG MAGNANAKAW SA ATIN PARA SUMAYA SI SATANAS NA PINSAN NAMIN. MALIWANAG BA?
I hate magnanakaws.....But I'm pretty sure, the culprit in too busy looking for his next victim to read this article of yours. Even if he does have time, i doubt if he even knows how to read or to use computer at all.
Anyways, I still felt sorry for you, for I myself been a victim of magnanakaws not once but several times. But the I had my vengance. I caught a couple of them in cold hand, man and a woman, together trying to steal my price gamecock. I hacked the guy with my sharp bolo.....Pero tumatalbog ang itak ko. Siguro may anting-anting. The female got in my way, and got a piece of anger. That's when I noticed she was a female for she cried "ARAY", as the sharp blade hit her lowerback. It was really dark that night. She was dragged by her partner as she struggle to climb back the tricycle(thier scape ride). The man came up to me again so we had a little pencing fight for 1 minute. He had a foot long knife and i got a one and a half foot long bolo(I got a little advantage). I got him again, but just like the first few strike, the blade just bounced. It's like hacking a rubber tire with a dull knife. At the end, they escaped and I got my 7 Times winner Claret back. Though I was shaking at of anger and fear...remembering it gives me a little pride of myself....I got the balls to face anybody. Hate leads to suffering, ika nga ni Yoda. Peace, love and understanding lang po tayo.
I wonder if you would say the same kung nabiktima at napaka importanteng bagay ang nawala sa iyo......Just a thought.
Madaling maging tao...mahirap mag pakatao.... At sa environment like pinas, you'll never survive kung ang pag uugali mo ay mag paraya na lang lagi...... It's all about survival sweety..... im sorry it happened to you too.
well i live abroad.we have had incidence wherein someone i knew left her ATM in the cash machine.a good samaritan handed the ATM to the bank so when my friend was inquiring about her lost card she got it back from the bank. now just last week i lost my wallet at work. and in it are all my bank cards, credit cards, driving liscence, photos etc.the thieve manage to withdraw money from my account using forged signature (as she didnt know my pin number) and the bank didnt ask for extra ID (which is basic security question).as soon as i learned that my wallet was stolen i reported it to the police (for a crime ref.number). the thieve then went next to my other bank and again tried to withdraw money but fortunately this other bank ask for extra ID which the thieve said she's just going to get from her car but didnt come back.the bank immediately called me to say that someone's trying to take money from my account, thats when i confirmed that my wallet was really stolen.they all get the thieve's face from CCTV.now im still waiting from the police investigation result. luckily i got my money back (as the bank immediately confirmed that i was a victim of fraud) and all my cards has been replaced. so i can tell you all people that its not only in the philippines that thieves exist. Thieves exist in every country, it's just that there are far too many of them in the philippines.
I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed reading. As for posting soon, I try my best.
Hello Melay. I am happy that there are still people who look at the brighter side of things. We may have lost the material, replaceable things, but the memories, sentimental value of these things will never be stolen from us.
I have practiced the art of positive thinking . Things may have happen in the way we never wanted it to happen but that's life. Life sometimes shower us with great surprises. What matters most is how we deal with it and learn how to appreciate the lessons it unveils. It may take you sometime to replace those things, but little by little, you'll complete your things again, and you'll have a new set of memories too that comes with them. Hindi ka nag-iisa. A few hours ago, a Florida Bus Lines papuntang norte ang nahold up somewhere in Concepcion, Tarlac.
Ingat lagi..!! Hi Melay,
i appreciate your compassion to whoever got your bag. tanong lang? do you have a friend or family member who is also a thief? or baka naman nagkamali lang ang katabi mo at nakuha niya ang hinde kanya.. malay mo marealize niya na hinde pala niya kailangan ang bag at isoli nya or ibigay sa walang bag. eh di nakatulong ka without your knowing it. naku mahirap manakawan. kelan lang nanakawan ako ng bag. nsa loob pa ung wallet. d ako nanghihinayang sa wallet at bag kahit mamahalin. hassle lang ung pagkuha ng mga IDs lalo n sa SSS at TIN. super tagal nun..
