Friday, November 4. 2011The war frenzy continues
For days, the sound bytes for all-out war, all-out justice and all-out peace have captivated every Juan and Abdul with frenetic fever following the debacle of the so-called ‘test mission’ in al Barka, Basilan by special forces training for scuba diving.
It was a very costly ‘test mission’ not only in terms of human lives but also in terms of ‘re-igniting’ the hormonal imbalance of every Juan and Abdul in a contest for a raw display of testosterone. But what is truly amazing is the fact that those distant and armchair wannabe ‘warriors’ have the farthest reach in a ‘pissing’ contest of war sound bytes. Metro Manila and other big urban centers far from the areas of conflict have the loudest call for the all-out war. It is not surprising that the people far from conflict are the ‘boldest’ in calling for war so long as the desired war to paraphrase the old Mindanao song would take place in ‘the far - far Mindanao’. Would the ‘brave’ armchair ‘warriors’ and the ‘war mongers’ change their tune if the war they desire would take place right at their very door steps? Most people in these enchanted islands have experiences of war only in movies or through war reportage via cable news or through telenovelas. They are romantic experiences to say the least. Prior to the 70’s, the only war experiences I had were through the stories of the 2nd World War narrated by my folks as they lived the Japanese ‘times’. To my folks, it was an experience that made them declare: ‘War, NEVER AGAIN! The other experience of war was the TV series ‘Combat’. But it was a very romantic and one sided war, where the American GIs were always the victors and the German soldiers appearing so foolish. Yet, to my big surprise while watching the first Papal Visit to the United Nations television coverage, on the 4th of October 1965, on the occasion of the UN 25th foundation anniversary, that slogan was the exact message of Pope Paul VI: ‘jamais plus la guerre, jamais plus la guerre! (never again, war, never again, war! It is peace, peace that should guide the destiny of people and the whole humanity!) I began to understand its meaning during the war in the 70’s in Mindanao. The senseless blood letting and the victims were mostly the civilians and the young fighters on both sides. War brings out the worst in humanity. The pillages, killings, massacres and mutilations of the fallen were no longer sound bytes or some romantic stories but real things that made you puke in revulsion! We lived in fear and endless prayers when we traveled through ambush sites. We jumped and laid flat on the ground every time shootings began. People were taught not to trust the enemies and they learned to fight them with all they had! We knew no peace and we had mastered the types of calibers by their sounds. We became familiar to the booming of the 105 howitzers and mortal shells. They were evacuees everywhere (now, they are called internally displaced persons or IDPs). Informal settlements began to mushrooms in cities like Campo Muslim in Cotabato City, Campo Muslim in Zamboanga City. Farmlands abandoned and remained fallow for years! Houses burned and people learned to live in make shift evacuation centers. The Estrada War of the year 2000 was a very costly one and for what? For war fetish and the flag-raising rituals that were only good for photo ops and that was it! Then the ‘fall’ of Camp Abubakar came and behold the actor Estrada appeared in a fatigue uniform like in his old movies and led the pack in feasting on lechons. It was truly amazing that he acted and believed that he won the war in 2000. Yet what he won was a simple and fleeting battle. No doubt, that the Estrada’s of this world and their likes would always have their wars and most likely win their battles. It is after all a way of ‘prolonging’ their ‘favorite’ adolescent war games. Only this time, it was for real and other people paid for these ‘war games’ with their lives! They know or pretend NOT to know that they will never win the war! War is never won by arms or by simple superiority of armaments. There are enough lessons worldwide to tell us how war can be won! NOT by armaments but political settlements with dignity and justice to all! In the era of globalization and the great wonders of technology and science, NO nation and NO people, today, stands alone, both in war or in peace. Either we stand together and survive or stand alone and perish! We need one another not as enemies but as partners. Unless we learn this basic fact of life, we have shall have NO future! ‘PEACE and NOT WAR should be the guide that shapes the destiny of peoples, nations and the whole humanity!’ Trackbacks

Do you think Fr. Mercado these people are interested in peace instead of a piece of that and a piece of those?
http://jcc34.wordpress.com/2011/10/22/pnoy-a-shakespeare-tragedy/ If the Muslim Filipinos can think like the cebuanos, like the Ilonggos, like the Tagalogs and the rest of the Philippines, then we will be near to national unity and peace.
Then everybody will be living under the same political structures: National, Provincial, Municipal, Barangay. And ARMM will be a burloloy, not needed actually. Right now the only way to what some believe will bring peace is to compromise with the Bangsamoro. Like their clamor for a substate and what else exclusive for them in addition to ARMM. Why cant all Filipinos study in the same school, eat in same restaurants etc. Are not we wallowing in sectarianism? If we do, then we are giving room for war. In the first place we have a war there in Mindanao going on for a long time because of sectarianism. The Filipino nation cannot be black-mailed, mangyari na ang mangyari. Call that all-out-war if you may but that's the way People of the Philippines hopes to survive - one people, one nation, united. another armchair warrior. your concept of unity rod is still confined to the era of napoleon. it's the 2000s, man! have you ever heard of multi-culturalism?
sama ka sakin sa basilan. tingnan natin kung ganyan pa rin pananaw mo pag-uwi mo sa pamilya mo You favor independence for these southern tribes. Go with them it is your choice. This is a free world.
armchair warrior? I have scars of war many pf them than you will know. I think you are blind. You don't see that there are Filipinos who are not Catholics and who are not Islamic and they are not a social problem to the Philippines. Actually outside the Bangsamoro are Muslims who see themselves as any Filipino and they pose no problem to the Philippines.
Bangsamoro is the continuation and propagation of religious-cultural sectarianism. There are only two options to that. eradicate that line of thinking or give them independence. So, how do you "eradicate that line of thinking"? Are you suggesting a genocidal war? Ethnic cleansing?

You are in one of those two options if you cannot see yourself.
The non Christians and the non Muslims who see themselves as any Filipino, and the cebuanos, the Ilonggos, the Batanguenos, the Ilocanos who see themselves as Filipinos are MULTICULTURALISM. They are live, flesh, of multiculturalism. They constitute what you call multiculturalism.
Now, what were you saying for these Bangsamoro?
Yes, Father, I think you are lobbying for a worse scenario to come.
We should stop legitimizing the MILF as an Islamic movement. They are criminals who shouldn't or even don't represent the sentiments of many clear thinking Muslims. If they continue to bear arms against our government, they should be hunted down and killed. Mindanao is losing out on many development opportunities because of them.
I beg to disagree with Fr. Jun Mercado that the war against Rebels can never be won.
Please research the history of Sri Lanka and the LTTE or Tamil Tiger rebels. The Sri Lankan government was finally able to squashed the rebellion and won the WAR against the Tamil Tiger rebels by a very determined military offensive. Our AFP should ask the Sri Lankan army for the tactics to win this war against MILF. The Sri Lankan Army did it. Capitalizing on popular sentiments for political gains ..
There is no need to all out war or the business of insurgency which is the biggest cottage industry for Generals and insurgent commanders. These high ranking people are the first one to benefit the spoil of war.
In fact the Armed Forces of the Philippines has Six services. Army, Airforce, Navy/Marines, NPA, MILF, MNLF. The President is the commander in chief. Why clamoring for peace, when that war in Mindanao is the government scheme. If you compare the policy and implement the policy of the Sri Lankan Government to the Tamil Tigers of Ealam.. to all freedom fighters in Mindanao especially the Moro Muslim of Mindanao, how come we are not wipe out by the Spaniards, American and Japanese in their "ALL OUT WAR"
Truly God will always side and prevails the faithfull against the action figure statue worshipers like Pilipendehos who are the majority is an "ENEMY OF ISLAM".. The only response for their infidel unbelievers who committed deception, treachery and atrocity against Moros is no mercy for they deserve none.. The only language of Pilipendehos are" Pilipendehos cower to the strong but oppresses the weak".. Rizal is always reluctant to give blessing to Pilipendehos to have independe because they are the slaves in the past who became tyrants in the present. Jose Rizal was RIGHT.. Our enemies are have change identities an much more treacherous... he who does not experience war, experiences freedom! but he who suffered and endured war fatigue, vowed not to undergo hell-like war!
War, sad to say, is the last resort when politics fail to resolve issues. It's not true that those farthest from the conflict do not suffer. I remember in the 70's I went to PC Hill, then HQ of CEMCOM when Cotabato City was besieged by the MNLF, from draftees up to top officials, most come from as far as the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, the Cordilleras in the North, Panay, Cebu and Leyte in the Central provinces - recruits and regulars, pressed on to fight and die to defend the Republic from dismemberment. Yes, the 4ID from Camp Evangelista, CDO bleed to death, but its was the 1st ID (Tabak), the 2nd ID from Southern Tagalog, and 3rd ID from Capiz that bore the brunt of the MNLF Secessionist War of the 70's. War eats into the guts of its people, a homicidal, fratricidal killing spree that spares no one near or far ! War must be avoided at all cost, but must be resorted to as a last resort, when all talks fail, as the final instrument of the State to Preserve itself, and Protect its People !
Quote to remember: "Either we stand together and survive or stand alone and perish". Thanks Pads!
Thank you ever so much Father Jun Eliseo Mercado...a very nice article. I reposted it in our group so they could read it and learn from your article. Peace be with you always!
INDIO, INDIAN means savage people
MORO or MOORS - ancient latin slang means Savage people. MAHARLIKA ancient sankrist means good looking penis. FILIPINO means- the most revered Royal highness. So pick your Bangsa name. I'll pick Astronesia- means southern Star.
Mr. Efren Padilla, You clearly have no idea about the war...after reading it, it is you who has illusory prospect of how we can solve it...
Millions or billions of investments were lost because insurgents will not allow it near their territory: they will just burn it. Do not worry, There are to many cities now in Mindanao that have become prosperous in the middle of the war: BISLIG CITY BUTUAN CITY CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY COTABATO CITY DAPITAN CITY DAVAO CITY DIGOS CITY DIPOLOG CITY GENERAL SANTOS CITY GINGOOG CITY ILIGAN CITY ISABELA CITY KIDAPAWAN CITY KORONADAL CITY MALAYBALAY CITY MARAWI CITY OROQUIETA CITY OZAMIS CITY PAGADIAN CITY PANABO CITY SAMAL (Island Garden City of Samal) SURIGAO CITY TACURONG CITY TAGUM CITY TANGUB CITY VALENCIA CITY ZAMBOANGA CITY |
