Thursday, October 27. 2011Remembering the dead…
The month of November is set aside for the remembrance of those who had passed away. November 1st of each year is the celebration of All Saints Day and the 2nd of November is devoted to the remembrance of the dead.
In many places in the Philippines, people go to the cemetery on the 1st of November. For the first two days of November, the cemeteries are transformed into major hubs where people meet their kinfolks, former classmates and friends heard and seen a year ago. In many ways, the remembrance of the dead has become also a powerful and continuing ‘glue’ to the ever growing family. It recognizes a common ancestry to growing family branches that have multiplied through the years and have gone far and wide. In years past, the remembrance of the dead was solemn and very religious. People offer Masses and prayers for their beloved dead. Later in the afternoon until evening they visit the cemeteries to light candles and place flowers in the tombs of their beloved. As the world has become more secular, the religious rituals have become more subdued and the cemeteries have practically become carnivals complete with shows and all sorts of games. The remembrance of the dead has become a big commercial enterprise with the trappings of showbiz! There is no ‘turning the clock back’, except for some nostalgic reminiscences of the bygone times and ages! There is the joyful celebration of the All Saints Day, November 1st, and All Souls Day, Nov. 2nd. The more religious members of the family reserve the whole month of November to offer prayers and Masses for the departed. It is rightly so that the remembering the dead is not all sad and sorrowful! The remembrance of the departed is not simply a ‘look back’ into the bygone days. The remembrance of the ancestors is as much as a ‘look forward’. People in a friendly and hospitable environment update themselves on the development of their hometown and kinfolks. The visit to the graves make them feel anew, in a more physical way, the beliefs and values on which their forebears stood ground with dignity and pride. We are four children plus one (there is a first cousin who was adopted by my mother from birth until she was 21) that were early orphaned by a father in a plane crash. The presence of our father was kept alive not only through photos and stories that our mother never tired telling and re-telling, but also by our weekly visit to the grave after the Sunday Mass. Through the stories, he became very alive and we were taught and formed to live by his belief and values, particularly friendship with common folks, hospitality to those in need thus our home had practically become akin to ‘DSWD’. As my father was a great provider, my mother became practically the ‘mother’ of perpetual help to all who knocked at our door. Now that both are gone… we (5), their sons and daughters, continue to live by their beliefs and values. They continue to measure us not only by their hard work and generosity but also by their devotion to the Almighty and to her Blessed Mother. The two towering icons that have become the living legacy to us are the Jesus of Nazarene at the Quiapo Shrine and the Mother of Perpetual Help at the Baclaran Shrine. My saintly mom became widow at a young age of 26 years old. The tragedy of my father’s plane crash coupled with five young mouths to feed and educate was the cross she bore. Her unwavering faith in Jesus of Nazarene at Quiapo gave her that strength to carry the weight and the burden of her cross. She, too, bravely bore her cross to the end and gave life and good future to all her kids - the five of us. She would, also, constantly call on the Mother of Perpetual Help in her times of needs which was ‘always’! And the Blessed Mother had never failed to come to her side both in times of joys and adversities. The Mother of Perpetual Help had truly become the perpetual help to her. She was literally her and our own ‘life line’ in the years of our growing up. All Saints Day and All Souls Day celebrations are always special to me. They provide the occasion to come back ‘home’ to Obando, Bulacan, my first hometown (Dulawan in Maguindanao is my second). It is not only to fulfill my filial devotion to my mom and dad by lighting candles and saying prayers in their graves but it is also a precious moment to ‘re-connect’ to my kinfolks and classmates and townmates. November is an occasion I always look forward to celebrate with kinfolks and friends as I reminisce the bygone years with all the members of the tribe – living and dead! Trackbacks

While I would like the dead to be remembered and have their legacies known, I think it would be wise not to pray for them, as they are now in a different state of being and whatever their needs are exclusively provided by GOD, without any of undue influence done by those who pray for the dead...
I would just like to have this known: "21Another of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ 22But Jesus said to him, ‘Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.’"
Thank you for the sharing of your life Fr. Jun Mercado. Thank you also for your loving parents for preparing you to become a friend, brother and father to all people your life has touched. May the loving, merciful and gentle God always bless you.
Thanks Fr. Jun for sharing this story. We owe so much to our parents for living their lives for their children while they were with us. Eternal rest grant unto your parents, may perpetual light shine upon them, and may they rest in peace.
May i ask a question, is catholic a religion of aswang?
B.S. Do not believe in it.. everything here in the universe ..is just freak show.. Injoy the freak show and watch it..
but many believe it was taken from the abbreviation UGG Ashur Boot Sale 'ugly',
Should the Living Pray for the Dead?
Does the Bible indicate that the living should ever pray for the dead? Is there any chance that those on earth can help those in the next world? The Bible says there is no basis whatsoever of the living praying for the dead. The following points can be made. 1. Condition After Death Determined In This Life Where we go after we die will be determined in this life. Jesus said to the religious leaders of His day. I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins (John 8:24). 2. No Change Possible He also said that no one could pass from the place of the unrighteous dead to the place of the righteous dead. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us (Luke 16:26). 3. Judgment After death comes judgment. Condemnation for the wicked and rewards for righteous, not purgatory. And it is appointed for humans to die once, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Final judgment is never dependent upon what we do after we die. 4. Jesus Wept For His Dead Friend Jesus cried at the tomb of his dead friend Lazarus (John 11:35). He did not pray for him. 5. The Example Of David's Son King David prayed fervently for his young son while he was still alive. Once he died, David stopped praying, for there was nothing else anyone could do. 6. No More Rewards Believers earn their rewards in this life. There is no chance to earn them in the intermediate state. Scripture teaches that we will be judged for our works, and there is no work we can do after we have died. 7. False Hope Praying for the dead gives false hope to people. What is worse is that it stops the prayers for the living. This is where our prayers should be directed. 8. No Example We find no example of Scripture of anyone praying for the dead. All the prayers that are offered are for those who are alive. Nowhere are believers commanded to pray for those who have died. 9. Onesiphorus—Not An Example Some claim a biblical basis for praying for the dead. There is an account of Paul writing about a man named Onesiphorus. May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus (2 Timothy 1:16-18). Some have used this passage to argue for praying for the dead. It is said that Paul prayed for mercy for Onesiphorus, a man who was dead. Therefore Paul believed his prayer could have some affect on the outcome of the destiny or reward of Onesiphorus. Response First, we do not know that he was dead. Nothing in this passage makes this certain. The fact that Paul prayed for his entire household does not mean Onesiphorus himself was dead. Second, even if he were dead, this is not a specific prayer on his behalf. Paul is merely expressing a desire that mercy will be shown to him on the day of judgment. Praying for the dead is contrary to everything the Bible teaches. Summary The Bible says that the fate of the dead is determined in this life. Praying for them does no good whatsoever. The example of Onesiphorus does not teach that we should pray for the dead. This is not a biblical doctrine. We need to pray for the living. DO YOU PRAY TO JESUS you called christ? he is a dead man.
i think you are crazy!
We always pray to the merciful heart of God to grant eternal rests the souls of our beloved depated ones.
just like in Genesis 18:24-33 abrham beg for God's mercy for people.... we beg God's mercy too for our loved ones and to those people who tried to live for the kingdom of God and yet in sme ways fails because of their weak nature. and so, we pray for God's mercy for their souls. Abraham said, "Please don't be angry, Lord, and I will speak only once more. What if only ten are found?" He said, "I will not destroy it if there are ten." 33 After he had finished speaking with Abraham, the Lord went away, and Abraham returned home. eternal rest grant unto them o Lord. I feel sorry for these christians, and born agaist christians who already judged the merciful heart of GOD. woe to this blind christians who doesn,t pray for ther dead brethren @love of GOD - this is the sad truth that we christians wanted to impart to everyone who are deceived. I agree that God is a merciful God, but He is also wrathful to those who continually sin despite His gift of life and salvation.
Search the bible, seek the truth and the truth shall set you free. @Full Gospel,
then who are you to judge, the sincereity and releationship of a person to OD? are you a GOD that dictates what is right and what is wrong? you cannot limit the Love of GOD... but for you...you just limit the LOVE love of GOD... God doesn't need the righteius ones like you...GOD opens his heart to those who acknowldege theirs sins and follow him inspite of their limitations. GOD is not black or white as wahat you think of.... His ways are not your ways and His thoughts are not your thoughts so... you better shut-up! itong si fullGospel (este half truthGospel pala) ay nagsasabi na wag kanang magdasal para sa patay ..o kahit ano paman... kasi ang diyos ay may sariling diskarte... indi siya pweding makipag "negociate".. kasi ang diyos ang may pamamraan.
KAYA PUES,, WAG NA KAYONG MAGDASAL SA DIYOS KASI DI RIN KAYO DIRINGIN NIYA. TAPOS! everything is not negociable! 1) GOD HEARS AND WELCOMES EVERY PRAYER
2) PRAYING FOR THE DEAD=== IS A PRAYER! THEREFORE, GOD HEARS AND WELCOMES A PRAYER FOR THE DEAD!
@Full Gospel... SEEMS THAT YOU LACK A GOSPEL AT ALL. what a shame of addressing yourself as fullGospel yet you don't know your Gospel at all...that is why i hate Christian denomination like your church
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
Indeed, Jesus said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." That time, He is the way, the truth and the life, all the prophets that was sent by God all of them brought one message to worship God alone without any partners. IT IS BETTER TO PRAY....THAN NOT TO PRAY AT ALL... if you don't or maybe seducing others not to pray... then think of yourself...you might be a collaborator of satan trying to pull others away from GOD.
let us pray for one another....we pray also for our departed brethren. Qur'an is the last and final testament and no one else.Islam is the religion of truth that's the reason why so many priest now embraced Islam
OH YEAH?...let us see what are its fruits!.... they are rotten fruits... hehehe!
A real religion does not boast anything. Nor does not tell others mistake just to boast for his religion. A religion is a medium to get closer to God and for the welfare of people.
There is only one true God. God of Moses, Abraham and Jacob. There are only two important golden commandments - 1. Love God with all your heart. 2. And love one another as you love yourself. If your religion tells this then your religion is on the right track. If not... then think and rethink. A true religion gives hope to life and does not take life to give hope. A true religion loves the sinners and corrects them. A true religion does not embrace sin and wrongdoing. A true religion is a friend to other religion. I am happy to be a Christian Catholic. And a real Christian does the above. Devil exist. And his number one mission.- To place the word "Envy" to everyones mind. This is how he falls. he envy humans.
Secondary Mission: Lies and Deception. He tells the half truth so you would believe and lies at the end, on which not point of return. his former name was Lucifer the light bearer his new name is satan. he can not read peoples mind but he can place bad thoughts on them. its up to you if you will entertain this bad thoughts. Soul exist- soul never dies, the soul is our senses. It always show our personality. Heaven and Hell exist. Heaven are for people who follows the Word of God. Your soul will feel all the good things you can ever imagine and the good thing unimaginable. This is a place where we praise God forever. Amen. Amen. Hell is a place for people who follows and deceived by satan. Your soul will feel all the abomination you can ever imagine and the unimaginable abomination. That is the truth. - Believe me. I am a Christian I am a Catholic and this is my calling. and should be everyones. But God gives us an absolute freedom. The freedom to choose from good or evil. To echo what Jesus have told. Because Jesus is the Word of God. And the word became flesh and liveth amongst us. God loves us all and He extends it here. Those who have ears listen. you are 98% correct.. but a certain correction, we don't have absolute (fullness of freedom) freedom. that is why, we have law to follow cause it limits our actions and desire..so, we have only relative freedom.
