SO BARACK Obama has finally made it as the United States’ Democratic Party Presidential candidate, edging out Hillary Clinton.
It was a tight race indeed, and both had worked real hard and long in getting in the votes including generously exploiting this thing called the cult of celebrity. They had built their celebrity up so high that they’ve made themselves household names, not only to those who cared for them and their existence but also for those who couldn’t care less if they existed like, say, some chamber maid in a remote lodge in Sagarmatha that happened to have an illegal access to CNN. But in my view, Hillary made a very big mistake in running against Obama to start with. I firmly believe that even before Obama and Hillary decided to even cast their lots in running for the Democratic nomination, Obama had already won. Why? The answer is simple: 24. Yes, that hit TV show 24 – 24 hours per season with agent Jack Bauer played by Kiefer Sutherland. The show was truly engaging, exciting and memorable. And, guess what, among the most interesting and memorable characters in that show was Senator and later President David Palmer, played by Dennis Haysbert. Palmer, the black President of the United States of America, who was so good, so decisive and so presidential that he lasted five seasons as the ideal leader of the free world. Of course, in 24’s timeline, that’s just 5 days. But his character was so powerful that the bad guys could not do anything but assassinate him to get their way. At this point, let me quote Wikipedia’s entry on David Palmer to state my case: Characteristics – He was married to Sherry Palmer whom he divorced after losing trust in her, even with a total of 29 years behind her (some remember that they even knew each other back in grade school, according to Sherry herself). However, he maintained contact with her, using her as an informal special assistant during both Season 2 and Season 3's terrorism crises. He was horrified when she was killed by a woman Sherry had implicated in the murder of Alan Milliken. He also has a daughter named Nicole (a rape survivor) and a son named Keith, who, during his campaign for the presidency, was accused of murdering Nicole's rapist. Around the time he was running for re-election, he dated his personal physician, Dr. Anne Packard, a divorcee. On the day of the first debate with his opponent, that debate was complicated when his opponent brought up charges that Packard had conspired with her husband to 'cook the books' at a pharmaceutical company they were previously involved with. She was innocent and Palmer supported her. She sometimes came between Palmer and his chief of staff and brother, Wayne, who disliked her. On that same day (shortly after her ex-husband committed suicide right in front of her), Packard broke up with him because his life was too complicated for her to continue the relationship. In Season 6, Regina King plays the role of Palmer's sister Sandra. Palmer has always shown himself to value principle above anything else, and has steadfastly refused to rush to judgment on anything. He was deeply disturbed by the cover-up of the events surrounding his son, Keith. He initially blamed Jack Bauer for the attempts on his life, but apologized when he realized Jack was innocent of wrongdoing. He was also horrified by the actions of his wife, Sherry, regarding both events about her son, her attempt to lure him into an incriminating affair, and her willingness to sacrifice Kim Bauer. He left Day 1 with his ethics intact, though his marriage was over. And in Day 2 when talking about the nuclear bomb, he says that he is more worried about the bomb going off than his re-election, something his subordinates fail to realize. In a special feature for season 2, Dennis Haysbert mentioned he based the character off a combination of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Colin Powell calling them the three politicians he admired most. Concept and creation – Dennis Haysbert was disappointed that his character was killed in the 5th Season, commenting that it continued an American legacy of killing its popular and charismatic leaders. He does continue to watch the show and be a fan. Okay, so you can say: wait, wasn’t a strong woman President Mackenzie Allen also projected in Commander in Chief played by Geena Davis? Shouldn’t that have worked for Hillary as Palmer did for Obama? Not quite, I say. Commander in Chief, the great show that it was, was canceled early. And nobody loves a loser, especially in show business. However, in that show Vice President Allen rose to the top rank when the President was incapacitated. Hillary, now, is seriously considering the post of Obama’s running mate. Hmmmmmmm….. very interesting. Gotcha IN THE Los Angeles Times, Theodore Dalrymple writes: “The cult of celebrity is not new, but it is increasing in its scope and effect. At one time, people wanted to simply gawk at the famous, and possibly dress like them. Now, many take their moral and political opinions from them.” Back home in the mess that’s Metro Manila, we ponder over our own celeb fascination. Gabby Concepcion, home with much fanfare lost no time in getting himself in every headline that he could, first toying with a Kapuso lawsuit after clinging on to rival Kapamilya network only to recant later. Then there’s the botched endorsement deal, leading him to be the top endorser of a food supplement whose own image battle is making the headline. And now he’s in court, answering for a bigamy charge filed ages ago, forgotten all this time until now, that he’s conveniently back. Of course, the bigamy charge drags other big headline hogging names like ex-wife Sharon Cuneta (now married to Senator Francis Pangilinan) and daughter KC, an extremely fast rising star. These guys are everywhere in the news – hard news, soft news, magazine covers, ad endorsements… in this blog… Wait a minute, there’s something I don’t get in this whole bigamy thing. So the claim is Gabby was married before he was married (in super big celebrity fashion) to Sharon. But Sharon has had her marriage to him annulled, so she’s legitimately married to Senator Kiko. From the way I understand it, annulled marriages totally cancel out the marriage – like it never existed or never happened. This is not like divorce where the marriage is severed, but the marriage did exist and still exists on record. So if the Gabby-Sharon marriage was annulled, where’s the bigamy? It never happened, as logic dictates. But that’s only me. And by some powerful and undeniable force, I am dragged into this cult of celebrity, feeding the growing need for attention and fame of one Gabby Concepcion. For all we know, here’s a guy who needs to make a comeback in Philippine show business because his real estate business in the US is kaput with property values way below survival rates, hit by widespread financial instability and nose-diving economy. And here I am, falling for this racket. Ju-ju-ju-judy BUT LIKE it or not, celebrities who have the popularity and perhaps even the credibility with a particular target audience can catapult your message to that audience. Hoping to replicate the success in convincing the mass audience with a message they so despise, First Holdings – the Lopez-owned controlling interest in Meralco – came out with a “public service” message on “systems loss” delivered by the darling of the masses: Judy Ann Santos. The message: systems losses in your electric bill are real, justified and legal. They were hoping that Judy Ann can do for this unsavory message what she did for Senator Jamby Madrigal’s unsavory candidacy. Well, Judy endorsing Ja-ja-ja-jamby on TV undid whatever distaste the masa had for Madrigal in her first run for a Senate seat. They quickly forgot her first campaign – a giant billboard on EDSA flashing a bejeweled socialite claiming she is there for the poor. Judy endorses the “systems loss” advocacy with analogy of how some ice melts away on your trip from the store to your home. She adds that systems losses charged to consumers are never higher than what’s prescribed by law. True enough – but it totally misses the point of what we all find distasteful about this issue. Sure, the kilometers of cables and wires that bridge the generation of power to the consumer at home may result in attrition of the electricity that runs through them. We can accept that, just as we can accept the ice melting on the way home analogy. What gets our goat is the system loss due to Meralco’s inefficiency… no, ineptitude… no, incompetence… no, plain katamaran, the cost of which is charged to us, the consumers. We pay for systems losses because they charge us for the power those bums in the squatter areas steal with their jumpers and direct wirings to the posts. They claim they have prosecuted some. Honestly, would you bother with policing and prosecuting when what’s stolen is getting paid for anyway? Why punish us who dutifully pay our bills? I say, charge us only for what we consume, these power distributors will move heaven and hell to secure their lines. As to the natural attrition that occurs in the power lines, the internet will show you that the technology exists to minimize if not totally eradicate this. You don’t understand what I’m talking about? Try this: when you buy ice, bring a styrofoam ice box or a Coleman. Or are you just too lazy? But they had to use Judy Ann Santos, because her celebrity with her audience – the masses they want to reach – will sweeten the message with her endorsement. It isn’t the same to come out with the same message in that usual “So the public will know” print ad, or even Meralco spokesman and father figure Elpi Cuna telling us of the melting ice on the way home. No. It had to be Judy. Remember: “The medium is the message.” Trackbacks

Now while I agree with you on the Meralco/Judy Ann fiasco - I completely disagree on the 24/Obama scenario. While folks in America have gone gaga for 24 a couple of years ago - making it the reason as to why folks went Obama rather than Clinton is a bit of a stretch.
I hope you are making the entry with your tongue firmly in cheek. Nonoy as my former boss would say: life is too serious to take seriously
You don’t understand what I’m talking about? Try this: when you buy ice, bring a styrofoam ice box or a Coleman. Or are you just too lazy?
It's not about being lazy, it's about bring practical. Do you actually think that the masses that you talk about who are easily swayed by celebrity endorsers can even afford to buy a Coleman or even a styrofoam box so that they can save the few drops of water that melts when they buy ice from their nearby store? Putting this in context, do you expect Meralco or the other power distributors to put security guards 24/7 to watch their power lines? First, it's not practical. Two, you'd be risking their lives especially if you assign them to high risk areas. Last, do you really expect them to stare at their power lines? do what u have to do...
we have a saying in our line of work. 'kung gusto may paraan, kung ayaw may dahilan' isa lang masasabo ko.....ang mahihirap lalong humihirap at ang mayayaman laging nanlalamang kaya yumayaman.....
ganyan ang MERALCO or LOPEZES..... Salamat sa kanila at nawa'y pagpalain sila sa ginagawa nila. The issue is about systems loss from pilferage and distribution inefficiency. It's not all about guarding electric posts and making sure that no one illegally taps on electric wires. I think it's outrageous to note these when there are other elements of the system that can be developed to minimize loss such as reducing loss in transmission lines and facilities such as substations.
"System loss"extra charges, that sounds consumer abused is it?Bakit kailangan bayaran ng mga konsumer ang konsumo ng mga magnanakaw sa kuryente?
Mabuti pa siguro ay gumawa na lang ng maraming solar ang mga negosyante at ibinta sa mga magnanakaw ng kuryente para hindi na pagbayarin ng extra charges for system loss ang mga konsumer. About Clinton vs Obama it is natural Obama would win because it is about time for USA to have a black leader to change the way white leaders does.I hope Obama would really make a big difference. Hillary´s charisma is no longer as hot as her husband charisma when he run for president, probably because they been a residence of white house already, the american people simply want to try Obama for a change, though Hillary suppose to be the first woman to lead USA if she win but the american people already tired of having a recycled politicians keep occupying the white house for themselves. I think Hillary could be good for a vice-president or McCain would get that position if she don´t deal with Obama. Pinay,

Pinay,
thats easier said than done. di ba naging katanungan sa yo kung bakit ang bansa natin na may tropical climate, sagana sa sikat ng araw halos buong taon, ay di maisagawa ang paggamit ng existing but seemingly ignored source of energy? di ba pumasok sa isipan mo na maaring may bahid ng business politics yan? walang iniwan yan sa development of biofuel, maraming kontra kasi may masasagasaan. naitanong mo rin ba sa sarili mo kung bakit arabo at hindi pinoy ang namumuno sa higanteng petron? di rin nalalayo ang murang gamot. di ba kelan lang may alingasngas sa pagpapasa ng murang generic medicines? bakit kamo? kasi may mga negosyanteng mawawalan ng malaking bahagdan ng negosyo kapag iyan ay pumatok. at ang mga kumokontra ay mga halal na tao na ginagamit ang posisyon sa sariling kapakinabangan sa pamamagitan ng pagsabwatan sa mga dambuhalang negosyante. di lang naman sa atin nangyayari ito, dangan nga lang ay sa atin walang kapinuhan, halatang halata ang hidden agenda. i'm not sure 'bout this but as far as i know, each and every energy source in the philippines go through NAPOCOR. yes, they do go through NAPOCOR, so may bayad pa rin buwan-buwan. take for example the wind energy gotten from windmills in some place in Ilocos. dumadaan ng NAPOCOR yun. ang singil sa kuryente, hindi nagkakalayo sa singil ng kuryente sa atin.

adrian,
that got me thinking too. but if we go for solar power lets say, individual households options, this can be installed with the cells/panels and don't have to go through napocor facilities therefore we don't have to pay anything to this group. of course this will be very expensive and not affordable to all pinoys.

power producers do not have to go through napocor. that's why the Independent Power Producers were created -- to meet napocor's lack of production (late 80s and early 90s) and have some form of competition. distribution companies like meralco can choose to buy from any of the ipps and napocor.
however, this was rendered u8seless by meralco when the lopezes also went into ipp operations. they basically bought from themselves at the price they wanted, not at the best price. also, when the ramos administration created the ipps, they made a critical tactical error -- they were banking on the economic upswing -- things were so low that they thought there was no way but up. so to make investing in ipps attractive the contracts assured the ipps that their power would be purchased n o matter what -- guaranteed purchase. the tactical move proved ok because it killed off those pesky long brown outs almost instantly. but it was wrong strategically because the economy eventually crashed -- especially with ERAP plus the asian financial crisis. so we are now stuck paying for power we don't use. now with gma... hoooops ayyy deeeed heeet agennnn... (ala britney daw o) It's a simple case of motivation. I agree that there will NEVER be a serious motivation on Meralco's part to fix or at least reasonably minimize their systems loss if they know that the CONSUMERS are paying for it anyway. This is where social responsibility and corporate accountability should take place. It feels so hopeless when officials reason out that we can't stop IPPs from charging unused power because it's under the law - can't we do something about it now that the impact is so significant for the common tao???
Re: Gabby bigamy case
Gabby married Sharon when was already married. Subsequently, Gabby and Sharon annulled their marriage, Sharon married Kiko Pangilinan. Gabby is guilty of bigamy, Sharon is not. The gist of a bigamy case is when a person contracted a second marriage when the first marriage is still subsisting. Gabby contracted marriage to Sharon, when he was still married to another, thus this bigamy case. Sharon married Kiko when her marriage was already annulled thus no bigamy. Some might say that there was already a subsequent event - annulment of marriage, that should have erased the basis for the bigamy case against Gabby, but that is not how the law or jurisprudence deals with bigamy. hmm, at least balitang artista pa rin as one guy who got married more than once said: that's not bigamy... that's big of me!
considering how hard life is today, i tend to agree. having more than one wife is a stretch Juday on Power Loss Charges
I think, the best thing that she should have done is to be impartial. This is a very sensitive issue with strong conflicting interests involved. Who the hell cares about movie celebrity. No doubt most of them has good look but only a few are smart. They do have talent and skills but only a few put it in good use. Some are arrogant and wants to be pampered 24/7. All of them are infidels to their spouses. Their movies are either sleaze, dialogue and acting are lame. Some of them are elected in public office but all of them can't figure out policy making decision.
Yet so many idiot adore them and even elected them in sensitive office. Pepeto,
right! absolutely right and you smacked it on their faces. I think there is another plot on meralco commercial which judy ann santos explain on current problem, im speculating that there are other motives behind the commercial that involves judy ann, lopez family can hire biggest artist other than juday with the likes of Sharon Cuneta, Claudine Barreto and angel locsin... but why judy ann???
Everybody knows that there is a war going on between star magic and alfie lorenza...and everybody knows that any explanation that meralco gave is CHAOS. Lito,
i guess Judy Ann just exactly did what you suggested, she thought of the million peso she gets in return for that "public service message"

haha, i stand corrected. i agree with that, "public insult message"
Just to share my actual experience. Many of our neighbors are in-jumper connection. Almost everyday they would put their stereo in the most irritating and disturbing maximum volume. My mom had already reported their illegal connection to the Meralco many times. But Meralco has never taken any measure. And I also learned that these houses were protected by a Meralco officer.
Thus, Meralco's system loss can be equated to corruption and inefficiency.
We're in the same situation. I live in an area in makati na may squatters din siguro atleast mga 100 families na sila dun, all connected sa jumper. Walang pakundangan magpatugtog! inuman araw-araw! may washing machine, videoke system, playstation, ref, tv, pati na rin pc ang mga to, who knows baka may naka-aircon na sa looban. I guess they can afford it since they are not paying for utilities like electricity, water and cable. Worse, it seem like kahit sino na lang naakyat sa poste from time to time para magkabit.
TAONG BAYAN PARIN MAGBABAYAD. KAYA NGAYONG ARAW NG KALAYAAN NG WISH KO SA GOBYERNO AY PALAYAIN TAYO SA SYSTEMANG BULOK NA ITO....PALAYAIN TAYO SA SYSTEM LOSS!!!!!!!. Can anybody check if the paid AD of Juday is charge also to system loss.
Do we need to tackle and to discuss about Obama, Gabby and Judy Ann?
It's a non sense Idea or subject matter. Its better to talk about how we can improve our way of life in our Country. To create a program which is more beneficial to the Filipino peole, to teach the moral values, to fight for the corrupt government officials,to improve a system of government for not adopting a system of other countries which even their own constitution are not perfect. Simple rules which is easy to understand which is more good to Pilipino people.
is that correct? "fight for the corrupt government officials"KURAP NA NGA IPAGLALABAN MO PA!
maybe Tom meant "fight THE corrupt government officials". mental lapse lang siguro, carried by the emotion, and not having it proofread before posting.
Anonymous
kapag ganyan, hindi aabot sa kalahati ng voting population ang makakaboto, LOL, tapos sasabihin ng losing party......... walang mandate of the people ang winner Is mandate really needs to be from non taxpayers.
So you were saying "bring a styrofoam ice box or a Coleman. Or are you just too lazy?"
Oh boy I guess you forget that in the capitalist world, anything or everything they used or do not use for production are added to the price and being passed on the consuming public. So if they buy styrofoam box or a coleman, the cost for this will still be passed to you and to me. So whatever could be added, they will add it. The thing here is that there is monopoly and nobody could force the Meralco to lower their price or improve their services because they know that people who uses electricity (in metro manila) have no other option. The weird thing about this is that we are saying we are poor. Damn, have you been to the squaters house? Let me say about 60% of them have TV set, electric fans, and worst DVD player. Is that what you called kahirapan? KATARANTADUHAN!!
Lets admit it, mahilig tayo sa libre. If we can get it for free, we will even if its a crime. We dont have the discipline. Mahirap pero 7-12 ang anak. I may say I earned enough for my family pero I never think of having a 7 child not even 3. Even for rich nor for poor, we are all alike. We want to cheat as much as possible. Rich thinking of becoming more rich, poor thinking of free things. Now, you will asked if the poor become rich, will he not do the same as Lopez were doing?? hahaha, you are stupid if you say NO.
Navy Helicopter Shot at in Philippines
June 09, 2008 Associated Press WASHINGTON - A U.S. helicopter on a humanitarian mission in the Philippines apparently was shot at, prompting the Navy to temporally halt the mission, a defense official said Monday. An MH-60 helicopter operating from USNS Mercy hospital ship had gone to pick up 11 passengers about 50 miles inland, and two bullet holes were found when the aircraft returned to the ship with the passengers. "The holes appear to be an entry and exit point from a single bullet," said Cmdr. Jeff A. Davis, a Navy spokesman. It is unclear if the bullet struck while the passengers were on the helicopter, he said. There were no injuries and the aircraft's commander was unaware of any bullet striking the aircraft during the flight, Davis said. The Mercy is anchored in Cotabatu, conducting Pacific Partnership 08, a humanitarian civic assistance mission between nations - and with non-governmental organizations - to provide medical, dental, construction and other services ashore and afloat. "The USNS Mercy mission commander has ceased all Mercy Pacific Partnership activities until a proper assessment can be made," Davis said in an e-mail. © Copyright 2008 Associated Press.
