I've lost weight – and a lot of people have told me so. But this never really hit me like it did the other Saturday when I attended my nephew’s wedding in Tagaytay. It was a chance to wear my favorite gray suit custom made by one of the country’s best tailors. I wore it last to some function early last year, had it dry cleaned and haven’t had the chance to wear it again until this last weekend. I noticed the pants were loose – expected since all my pants have become loose and crumple up at the waist when I pull my belt to the last hole. But the clincher was the jacket – as I pulled it on during the walk from the car to the chapel’s door I suddenly felt I was in a tent.
It was just then that it really dawned upon me… what have I done? More specifically, what have I done right? I’ve got through a lot of weight loss programs in the past – Slim Fast, weight training, High Protein, No Carb, South Beach… I’d lose weight slowly and gain it all back fast. I had given up… it always entailed some deprivation or suffering that I felt it just wasn’t worth the aggravation. But this time around, it seems as fun as anything. It all started with my wife and sisters having to go through some lifestyle change to fight the big C. Breast cancer, after all, is the leading female problem (I’m just second, they assure). So it meant a change of lifestyle, basically eating healthy and living clean. So, I figured, it doesn’t make good financial sense to have two grocery lists in one household. So whatever they’re having, I’ll have too. Eat all you can Yes, you gotta believe it. It’s eat all you can in our house. Of course, it’s eat all you can in vegetables, fruits and fish. That’s it. And before you protest, let me say that there are countless ways to make the meals interesting and great tasting that you won’t crave for anything else. I don’t know about you but salmon belly and bangus belly everyday is something I can live with. So basically it’s no meat, no seafood, no dairy products like milk, cheese and ice cream, nothing canned and processed. Coupled with this is preparation: nothing fried and if you grill it has to be wrapped in banana leaves. Nothing open over flame or charcoal. Oil must never be cooked – even the healthy olive oil. Just add later as flavoring and texture. Egg whites and bottled sardines are OK. Nothing white – because white means processed with chemicals – like white rice, white flour and white bread, white sugar (brown sugar is also processed, but avoid sugar altogether). Have brown rice, wheat or multigrain bread and use muscovado, honey or even that new coconut sugar as sweetener. No junk food. Have raw nuts instead like almonds, walnuts etc. Peanuts are not nuts but legumes and should be avoided, but are better than your chips and dips if you have no choice. And water. Lots of water. No softdrinks or any carbonated stuff. Occasional alcohol like beer and wine – not to excess – and no artificial juices. Natural fruit juices are great, but limit your intake to the equivalent of actually eating the fruit. Remember, these juices are actually easily digestible and concentrated forms of the fruit – you may forget that one tall glass may actually be a whole case of apples. The thing is you never have to go hungry. Just stuff your mouth with what’s good, fill up that ol’ tummy. Supplement, supplement, supplement Vitamin supplements are a must. You just can’t get enough of the right stuff with regular eating. Years ago I gave up popping vitamins because I thought it wasn’t doing me any good. I was energetic, could keep late nights and still make it to early morning meetings. But when I restarted taking some basic multivitamin – one that says it’s complete with all the stuff needed by the body – it now makes all the difference. You can really feel the boost. I also tried some other stuff like an all natural food and tonic combination, and it was great. But it cost an arm and a leg so, at the behest of my doctor, I went back to the regular multivitamins that cost P9 a day. Besides, I was just moved by the priceless look of ridicule my doctor gave me when I showed him my new vitamin regimen: “So you think money down the drain is a smart move?” In addition to the multivitamins we’ve added three other supplements: ascorbic acid for added vitamin C (so long as your stomach can take it), fish oil and CO-Q10 (coenzyme antioxidant and good for the heart and circulation). Only the best I must admit, every once in a while I have the urge to backslide – to go back to my evil ways. After all, there’s always that Peking duck, rib eye steak or pork barbeque beckoning me, calling out my name… This is where Lory Tan, Chairman of World Wide Fund for the Environment Philippines, and his eating philosophy comes in: “If it isn’t the best, I won’t eat.” Indeed, why partake of lousy or even mediocre preparations? Save your sinning for the best and only the best. And that’s why, once in a while, you’ll be reading of the best places to have the best food in this blog. Life is too short to die yet. Trackbacks

You have a goodsense of talking about health, goodfoods or proper nutritions and it will help people that have same problem you had.Nice blog FBI.
Pretty good information. I appreciate the one sharing it. I have known it a long time ago and already practicing it but i never had the chance sharing it.
I thought no one would care to know the original diet that God has given to His children. The Bible is very clear on it: grains, nuts and legumes are the food that God intended us to it but we chose to follow what our mouth desire. Thank you for sharing and keep on being healthy! are you saying hindi rin maganda ang pagkain ng fruits of all kind? I eat kasi different kinds of fruit whenever I dont feel eating rice. Sabi kasi fruits is good for the skin. My favorite is grapes, apples, orange, chico, pear, melon and pakwan. Pero i notice di nga ako masyadong naglose weight even if I dont eat heavy meals regularly
Losing weight takes a lot of effort by choosing the right food. When buying food keep reminding yourself to change the habit of buying what you've been buying before and of course you can eat all you can moderately but really avoid fatty foods. My daily health supplements contain mega multivitamins and super stress capsules because of my age with calcium and vitamin D and I noticed that my blood pressure is always normal. I have to watch my sugar intake due to what they call the adult inset diabetes which did not show anymore in my last check-up. We are responsible of our own health so individually we should be committed to guard ourselves and follow our instincts and good advice.
Thanks for sharing this valuable info! Not too many people are intelligent enough to eat right and have the discipline to exercise. Look around you...those out of shape far outnumber those who are fit, who look good. Time to change my lifestyle as well. The info you shared is very useful.
Thanks for the healthy diet tips. I'm sure a lot of people were inspired (including me). I also tried taking diet supplements, but eventually I stopped because I realized its not worth it depriving myself.
I do not recommend taking capsules that burn fats (I can not disclose the brand) because personally It has an adverse effect on me. When I stopped taking this capsule I experienced something like a withdrawal symptom. I feel like vomitting in the morning. It was an abnormal feeling. It took me 1 week before I got over that abnormal state. Now, I eat anything but it should be in moderation and I make sure that I eat a balanced diet. Also, I just wanna share some healthy food diet tips for everyone. Power Foods We Should Be Eating 1. Tomatoes. These can be either canned or fresh. Why are tomatoes good for us? They contain lycopene, (which is what gives them that wonderful red coloring). Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that has been proven to help ward off cancer, prostate and breast cancer. It can also slow down the aging process (something we all would love to do). Tomatoes also contain Vitamins A and C. These vitamins can help us to fight off colds. They also contain a small amount of fiber, potassium, and niacin. 2. Yogurt. We all have heard the commercials (probably) about how our bodies needs those active bacterial cultures. Yogurt is full of these. This is the good type of bacteria our bodies need. It helps make our immune systems stronger, helps with gastrointestinal illnesses, and fight certain infections and even cancer. Yogurt also contains a lot of calcium, which is good for our bones and teeth. Finally, yogurt contains protein, vitamin B12, riboflavin and potassium. 3. Avocados. Avocados used to be a no, no because of their high fat content. But their high potassium and their high content of Gluthathione, is reason enough to add them to your daily food list. Gluthathione is a powerful antioxidant that destroys free radicals. What are free radicals? They are substances that promote disease and accelerates the aging process. Another good point about avocados is that they contain monounsaturated fat. This fat can lower the bad cholesterol in one's system, while raising the good cholesterol.Plus, they contain Vitamin E. But yes, they are high in fat content, so don't over do it. Just eat a few of them. 4. Dark, leafy greens, such as Spinach. Yes, mom was right we need to eat that spinach. Why? For one thing, they are loaded with calcium (good news for those who can't drink milk). Remember calcium is vital for strong bones and teeth, plus for fighting osteoporosis. Dark, leafy greens also contain large amounts of Vitamins C and A, plus fiber. Try to eat a salad a day. 5. Salmon and other fish that contains Omega 3 Fatty Acids. We all know by now that most fish contain omega 3. Omega 3 is good for heart health, reducing inflammation and could even help with depression. Salmon also contains a lot of protein, vitamins B12 and B6, magnesium, niacin and phosphorus. Omega 3 fish oil fatty acids will cause your blood pressure to go down, lower your cholesterol and triglycerides. Another healthy side effect is the fats and plaque from your blood will start dissolving, which improves your circulation and increases the elasticity of your blood vessels, preventing hardening of the arteries. So there you have it. Those are some of the top foods we should be eating on a daily basis. hi ms. darlene,
ang gagaling naman n payo mo, ala mo bui na lang palamdalas ako kumain ng spinach dito sa lugar ko at mostly vege salad ang lunch ko cguro at least 4 times a week....pero my nakuha akong idea syo... yung kumain ng yogurt marami kasi dito eh kaya lang di ko masyado nabibigyan pansin kainin...as of now lagi na rin ako kain nun...tapos dapat pala instead of other juices, tomato juice na lang ang bibilihin ko palagi... tignan ko ang epekto after 1 month baka mas lalong gumanda ang kutis ko... salamat Hi Aljubail ang galing mo naman talagang vegetarian ka pala, keep it up, and don't forget to include fish in your diet para ok yung blood pressure mo. Pede ka rin uminom ng ibat ibang fruit juices not only tomato juice para naman di ka magsawa. Kase sa totoo lang I tried drinking tomato juice pero nasusuka ako, I would rather eat the tomato raw with matching sawsawan on the side or saute it with garlic and onion then add scrambled egg. (hmmm sarap!) Or if you like pasta, I suggest you can try cooking the Pesto Pasta. then you put lots and lots of tomatoes. You use olive oil para healthy.
Happy eating! thanks darlne -- and everybody else, for all the stuff you're sharing.
here's something to think about -- I saw it in CNN: 50% of ten year olds in greece are overweight, and 30% are "clinically obese". the culprit is less exercise and the american style junk food (fries, fired chicken, burgers etc) scary yay for not starving self to lose weight! hmmm but what about sweets? is there still room for dessert?
Is it good also if you eat sometime of meat, for me I consider myself that I have always a good diet coz I always preferred fish or vegetable in every meal is this good or I need also to eat meat?
Yes meat is also important but it should be taken in moderation. It is an important source of iron, which is vital for making red blood cells. Eating meat also aids the absorption of iron from vegetables and cereals. One of the benefits of eating meat is that when you eat a proper balanced diet it can help iron absorb into the body. A lot of things have iron in them but you need to get it out and into the
body. “According to nutritionists with the National Livestock and Meat Board, in general animal foods - meat, poultry, fish and eggs - contain top quality protein. This means all these foods supply the necessary amounts of all essential amino acids.” It is an excellent source of the B-complex vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and vitamin B12. It contains significant amounts of zinc and copper in their readily absorbable forms. Study shows that children who eat more meat are less likely to have deficiencies than those who eat little or no meat. Kids who don’t eat meat — and especially if they restrict other foods, as many girls are doing — are more likely to feel tired, apathetic, unable to concentrate, are sick more often, more frequently depressed, and are the most likely to be malnourished and have stunted growth. Meat and other animal-source foods are the building blocks of healthy growth that have made America’s youngsters among the tallest, strongest and healthiest in the world. You may also check this site: “Benefits of meat for children and teens” http://www.healthyweightnetwork.com/zart6.htm hi,the 3 main causes of diseases are stress, dehydration and malnutrition plus environment
you described it correctly...it is not only food that makes the people sick, too much stress, contaminated environment and lack of clean water supply(see what happened in Laguna)Thypoid fever KO(Knocked Out)even healthy individuals...even Mr.Howie Severino´s brother-in-law becomes victim of it.
Though i understand this blog talk about how to have a perfect figure...we can not have a healthy body if our environment is polluted and dirty. DOH should see to it that all water supply are safe to drink...and the DENR should makes sures that our environment is clean and free of contaminations. Every sector of gov´t.should be doing their jobs in order for its citizens to stay healthy, happy and usedful...kaya lang sa nakikita ko sa ating bansa, ang kawawang mahihirap ang pumapasan ng lahat ng kapabayaan ng gobyerno na dapat sana mangalaga sa kalusugan ng mamamayan upang sila ay maging malusog, maligaya at napapakinabangan...kung lahat na sila may sakit paano pa sila makakapagtrabaho, paano pa aahon sa kahirapan ang pinas kung kahit pagbuhat ng plato ay hindi na magawa...kung maraming maysakit sa pinas, kasalanan iyan ng DOH,DENR dahil hindi nila inaalagaan ang kalusugan ng Inangbayan. they thinking what going to happen today for there own pocket, not for everybody for our future, kaya walang asenso sa pinas, they listen but they are not doing it.think a thousand times mate, hellooooo and wake up.
to add to these, we also need at least 7-8 hours of pretty good sleep notwithstanding to drink at least 8 glasses of water to hydrate the skin and get rid of those toxins in the body. Health is wealth so why take chances, tomorrow may be too late.
haaay... it is so easy to plan for weight loss, pero how about me... ang mahal pa naman ng gulay ngayon.. and full time student pa ako kaya walang work para may pambili ng sariling food... ang hirap maging mahirap!! pero maganda talaga yung payo ni sir na nandito... kakainggit nga lang.. hahaha!!
graduation ball pa namin sa march 28, tapos ganito pa din ako ka-fat?? paano kaya ako papayat within 2 days?? kahit 2 inches man lang off my waist para hindi magprotude ang aking belly sa damit ko no? please... sana may isang makapagpayo sa akin!!!! Hi Jaysille, since you only have 2 days left to trim down. I would suggest that you include quaker oats in your menu. Quaker oats is high in fiber thus helps eliminate the toxins in your body,
You may also include green leafy vegetable and fruits in your diet such as orange, banana or papaya. Do some quick exercise and have enough sleep. This is not an assurance that you'll trim down by 2 inches in 2 days, but I'm sure you'll be stunningly pretty in your graduation ball. If in case you did not lose 2 inches in your waistline, here are my other suggestions: 1. Wear something loose. Do not wear body fit blouse or jeans because your "bilbil" will surely pop out. 2. If you're planning to wear jeans or pants. You pick those hipster jeans or what they call below jeans. Your nice chubby figure will surely come out with those jeans. 3. If you're planning to wear a dress. You choose the Empire Style dress with a V neckline. This style will surely hide your belly. Why V neckline? Not only that it's sexy but to also add height. Especially if a girl has a short neck and face, a plunging V neckline will help lengthened her features. 4. Lastly, regardless if you lose weight or not, just be confident and always put a smile because this will surely add value to your face. I hope this will somehow help you. Goodluck to your graduation ball! This is something encouraging. you featured a lot of things that are healthy to diet information. But I can add that drinking one liter or more in the morning before taking anything can help cleanse a lot of your body waste. In fact, after ten minutes of drinking a lot of water you flush everything that you have probably eaten in the night. Fruits, green and leafy vegerables are absolutely good to your body. Fish that you mentioned is a must in our house. Those things are not heavy to digest and other foods richin fiber. More power to you.
nice blog you have here..for me, every week i do jogging at the oval...around 4 times. after that, then agahan sa bahay with fruits and juices.
http://www.pinoymattersg.com I am dazed and confused about all this suggestion of diet and weight loss. What is wrong with one of the seven deadly sin of GLUTTONY. I don't smoke and drink socially, my suggestion is let's get physical and exercise not just your brain but your body as well. I don't see anything wrong with eating a lot as long as you burn it.
After working out go to McDonald order a supersize Big mac large fries and a coke. Still not satisfied turn to the next driveway at KFC order a bucket size of fried chicken. Don't forget in your way home to stop by at In and Out burger and take home a double double and plate size of fries with spicy chile cheese beans spread around it. Still not satisfied have five boxes of Pizza deliver by Pizza Hot, I like Papa John's pizza better than domino. The next day we can have a chinese take out or a Burrito packed in ground beef and spicy chile and beans. unfortunately, Pepe, it doesn't work that way. Some stuff just breaks our bodies down...and anything in excess is bad. Moderation is the key to life, sabi nga ng high lama sa lost horizon.
Also, don't forget regular exercise (at least thrice a week) of the total health package, a change in mindset.
Congratulations to you and Mench on your second lives, and the arrival of the baby! Indeed, God is good all the time! Hey Ayn! Thanks! Yes, exercise must be part of it. if you can't hit the gym do it at home, or walk more -- just move around more I guess.
I think the movie you are referring about AIDS is "And the Band Played On" and not "Boys in the Band"
ay oo nga! senior moment :-p -- ano nga pala yung 'boys in the band?'
have you ever found yourself in a middle of a room, stumped, wondering whether you were coming or going? hahaha |
