Wednesday, August 20. 2008The iPhone 3G weigh-in
With its launch coming up in two days, here's a geeky look into the pros and cons of owning & using an iPhone 3G in the Philippines.
WHY NOT TO GET THE IPHONE 3G: 1. JUST FASTER: If you are like me and have somehow procured the original iPhone the only thing you'll be getting with the upgrade is 3G support, which means faster data connections for Internet-based apps. There's supposed to be GPS but it isn't true-blue GPS. The rest of the added features you can get via an upgrade to the iPhone 2.0 software (just make sure you know what you are doing if you know what I mean). 2. NO VISUAL VOICEMAIL: Visual voicemail is a neat feature that came with the original iPhone (but it requires telco support to work) that allows users to see a list of voice messages arranged by name and listen to them in any order (where voice mail is concerned you waste a lot of time having your messages read out to you in the order they were received). Globe apparently won't be offering the visual voicemail service when it launches on Friday. There's no word yet if it intends to offer this in the future but I intend to find out during the launch party on Thursday night. 3. USELESS DEFAULT APPS: Some applications are practically useless for Pinoy users: Maps: Maps application works and loads a bit faster when on 3G but the available maps for the Philippines aren't good enough for it to be at all useful. Stocks: Stocks applications works if you intend to check stocks on the NYSE, NASDAQ, and the Nikkei Index (among others). But if you intend to use it to monitor your stocks on the PSE you're out of luck. iTunes: There's a app called iTunes (the purple icon) which is used to purchase music off the iTunes Music Store. But because deals with recording companies haven't been worked out yet, you won't be able to use this application at all. You can try but you'll get an error message that says your country isn't supported. Unless you know a workaround. 4. EXPENSIVE DATA PLANS: Globe's Internet usage plans are still too expensive. Forget the price of the phone (which is expensive too), the killer factor here is Internet usage. The iPhone is a device that relies heavily on the Internet. Not counting the third party applications you can buy, about 8 default applications require the Internet (Music Store, App Store, Maps, You Tube, Safari, Mail, Weather and Stocks) so if you intend to use them while on Globe's 3G connection, prepare for some expensive data costs. Apple is also offering a push-like feature for email which works in tandem with their $99/year Mobile Me service. Theoretically this service will require a constant Internet connection to ensure that email is delivered instantaneously. To quote a tech friend, "if you have PUSH enabled and your mailbox is active, you are doomed!" Of course the only way to confirm is to sign up for a phone/plan, use the service and wait for the bill to arrive. Globe currently doesn't offer a plan with Unlimited Mobile Internet hours so for now you're stuck with a 40-100 hours/month plan or carefully watch your Internet consumption. You can also opt to go online only when a WiFi connection is available. Globe also offers free hours at Globe Wiz hotspots (with certain plans). 5. NOT FOR SMS: The iPhone is not built for texting. Last time I checked, I send an average of 1600/SMS a month and I did a lot of it on my iPhone. But the phone is heavily flawed when it comes to handling SMS. First of all nothing beats the tactile feel of a real keyboard. No matter how good you get (give yourself a week to get the hang of it) typing on glass can/will never be the same – unless they can create glass the provides tactile response. You can't forward messages, cannot send texts to groups (although you can send to multiple recipients but you have to select contacts individually) and there's no copy/paste if you want to forward snippets from a text file or another text message. Apple has failed to address these issues in the second iteration of the iPhone - apparently because it remains to be seen as a priority. This is not good for a text-heavy country like ours. WHY TO GET THE IPHONE 3G: 1. BEST IPOD TO DATE: The iPhone is indeed the best iPod ever, and arguably the best multimedia phone as well. You're really getting a fully functional iPod and a phone - so for the first time ever you can survive with just one device and not find yourself craving for more. Movies are just awesome on its 3.5-inch screen and if you have the right converters at home you can encode home movies and what not for hours of pure viewing pleasure. Although most phones in the market today support some kind of music format what makes the iPod great is its simple to use interface. The iPhone is consistent in this regard and listening to music on it is a breeze. If you have lots of songs and movies don't even think about NOT getting the 16GB model, you'll regret not doing so once your device starts to fill up. 2. EMAIL WORKS: I've had tons of phones in the past but no other phone can handle e-mail as good as the iPhone. I can send/receieve e-mail at the click of a button (even on GPRS) and even while on roaming (tried it in the US earlier this year). Attachments are also not a problem as most files can be viewed on the fly without requiring an external program. The built-in e-mail client supports Microsoft Exchange, POP3 and IMAP accounts and theoretically PUSH Email via Apple's optional service MobileMe. And if you have a Yahoo or Gmail account, that's easy to setup as well. 3. INTERNET SURFING LIKE IT SHOULD BE: No other phone can also handle mobile Internet surfing as great as the iPhone. Pages load just like they would on a regular computer browser (no compromises except for flash video) and because of the iPhone's multi-touch functionality its easy to navigate within pages. After having tried the iPhone I have had no patience to browse the net on any other phone. Oh and if you have WiFi at home, the iPhone is also great for some last minute surfing while in bed. 4. ACCELEROMETER & MULTI TOUCH: Admittedly the iPhone's built in accelerometer (tilt sensor) and multi touch technology are more of show-off features than anything else, BUT they really do add to the user experience, which is most important after all. Plenty of 3rd party games rely on the accelerometer for some wii-esque action. Multi-touch allows you too flip through photos, zoom in with pinch-actions, scroll through your home window to access applications, and navigate around web pages with ease. 5. AMAZING APP STORE: Apple's decision to open up the iPhone to 3rd party developers is one of the best moves its done so far. The App Store is filled with a variety of applications that extend the capability of the iPhone and seal the deal as one of the best phone's ever. There are currently hundreds of applications currently available on the app store ranging from games to productivity apps to scientific apps. My favorites are WordPress (update your WordPress blog), OmniFocus (Get Things Done), Facebook (Facebook!!!) Twitterific (Twitter) and NetNewsWire (RSS reader). I haven't even begun to explore the wealth of games that's available for purchase. Where pricing is concerned you'd be pleased to know that some iPhone apps are FREE while paid apps are priced at an average of 4-6 US dollars each. --- I must admit that I have a White 16GB iPhone 3G reserved for me but I haven't gotten around to submitting the paper work they sent me. Am holding off because the way Globe is offering the phone is ideal for new subscribers but not for loyal old timers like me. I have already 2 Globe lines and am not ready to get one more just for the iPhone. If I did it wouldn't even be FREE. I hope you found this guide helpful, although based on experience, if you've already set your mind on something, nothing anyone can tell you can convince you otherwise. The iPhone after all is one of the most hyped devices in history (deservingly so) and with a wait (and anticipation) that has spanned almost two years, I wouldn't be surprised if Filipino fans, take the bait without batting an eyelash. --- Disclaimer: The author prefers Macs over Windows and admits to be a BIG apple fanatic. His experience with the iPhone dates back to August 2007. Trackbacks

Sorry Josh for igniting the the issue about iphone, we are just sharing our thoughts and hell experience about this communist iphone (nasabi kong communist kase 1 network lang ang pwedeng mag-activate, no freedom of network choice)
Hey guys lahat kayo tama ang opinyon ukol sa iphone. Nasa atin din naman ang desisyon kung bibilhin ba natin ang produktong ito na punong-puno ng pambobola. Sorry Mr. Steve Job. You cannot circline the head of a Filipino. BEST CHOICES ASIDE FROM IPHONE SUCKS...SAMSUNG OMNIA SGH-i900, NOKIA N96 (COMING SOON) N85 (COMING SOON) HTC TOUCH DIAMOND, SAMSUNG INNOV8 i8510, ERICSSON XPERIA, ERICKSSON C905. Don't waste your money in purchasing iphone isucks 3goat. Thanks Josh, More power. Hi josh(a.k.a cyberprince)
meron ka bang video coverage nung globe iphone launch. kala ko interview mo ako eh. but you left na pla. nice meeting you btw. Have you heard that the makers of Iphone are being sued due to 3G reception issues. According to the complainants, even with high signal of 3G, the internet browser was very slow, as is with text messaging, email messagingand other data transfers, and at times, their phone connections are cut at mid-call.
Just giving you a heads up. Although i think Apple is going to put out an upgrade which they say are going to "fix" the said troubles. The phone is great and all - but the freaking local distributer (Globe) want's you to make a reservation 1st - which is utterly useless since they are catering the high end users 1st rather than the regular joses or a 1st come 1st serve basis in like any other places the iphone were released (US, Australia,Japan ... etc) Yung 8GB iphone - yun lang ang available if you'll ask for one - yung sa 16GB - They will give you an excuse na walang stock o walang available o (THE BEST EXCUSE) na delay yung ibang shipment ng 16 GB iphone. And I forgot to mention, na if you want the black - they have an excuse na white lang yung available due to yun ang mas na order nila. Globe told me na today ko daw mare-recieve yung confirmation call ko to pick-up my phone sa business center nila - pero ZIP! NADA! NIL! @:( - Excuses lang ang natangap ko. I pray na ako lang talaga ang malas and that this is not happening to other regular joes. I also hope na sana, parang sa US, na pati Apple Stores dito ay nagbebenta din ng iphone.
In the philippines, Iphone will only just be a part of your decoration by just carrying it around, showing off to their friends, schoolmates etc... and still be as good as any other cellphones and that's it, the only difference is it is a touch screen. For internet connection, I doubt that pinoy will use it. Believe me, Globe's billing is so disturbing, use your cp to call for 10 seconds and they will charge you for a minute. Unlike any other countries, they charge you only for how many seconds and minutes you used acurately that is why they use call rather than sms.
I agree with you I.T. Expert
that's why we have numbthumbs and sored fingers. And a lot mobile users are a showee-typed! All service providers got their millions if not billions thru sms IPHONE 3G VS NOKIA N96 VS SAMSUNG SGH OMNIA i900 VS SONY ERICSSON XPERIA. the winner is N96
Like Fairings, winner din sa akin ang N96.
Iphones is a touch screen alright but that is all folks, it will still be used for sms. And I pray to god nobody will get killed if ever thieves sees them flashing it around the streets. I think the problem here is our service providers, they still do not have an accurate billings, it is still horrible. And still needs great improvements.
OTHER SHARED COMMENTS!!!
Friends .....those of you in out there planning for iPhone... THINK TWICE BEFORE MAKING A DECISION... The short comings of iPhone are endless... No video calling, no AD2P on the Bluetooth, CAN'T share ANY (mp3, images,videos....) files via bluetooth, can't use as a wireless modem, (you pay ridiculous data charges to activate internet on your phone, but cannot connect it to your PC and browse when you are at home) no copy and paste,(cannot copy a part of a.... say.... email & send it....have to type it out yourself) no 3.2 or 5 megapixel camera,(the 2MP camera it carries is worst camera i've ever seen..... photos look like they have come out of a VGA camera) no video recording with camera, no front camera, no flash. no JAVA support No physical keyboard (BELIEVE me! this alone is a dealbreaker...touch keyboard as good as it looks...once you use it then only you come to know about the importance of having a hard keypad) No 3G network yet in India..so why pay for expensive 3G phone if you cant use its 3G services ... so, for India, iPhone 2.0 is no better than its first version No removable battery. (You cannot change battery. Have to send it to apple outlet.. Come on now!!!!...This is not an iPod. Its a bloody phone. You cannot live without phone for 2-3 days) No haptic feedback and cannot send MMS, can't use as external storage device (16 GB of utter waste..next time you go to your friend's house & find some interesting songs, movies, etc...sorry you cannot connect your '16 GB' phone and share it!!!! Apple apparently has a solution.. " BUY MUSIC & MOVIES FROM iTUNES STORE "..... Give me a break will you APPLE!!!) no FM radio, can't use your mp3 files as ringtones,(This is heights man!!!) cannot insert any other SIM card…. completely tied to iTunes... Connect to your friend's iTunes & you risk erasing everything on your phone. list goes on & on & on…. We are used to these features. Most of our phones already have these features. & we cannot do with out them.... i mean can you imagine paying so much for a phone with which you cannot transfer files via bluetooth. what age is this ...STONE AGE??? Some features may be activated by jailbreak.. But why the hell should you risk losing your warranty after paying so much. And want to add third party softwares??.. YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM FROM iTUNES STORE ONLY!!! . (Shell out more money). Apple is a bloody control freak. Dont surrender your freedom to it. Its good for american market (who have no idea what mobile freedom/choice is) which is in stone age compared to asian/european markets. When they want to buy a phone, they have to go to network operators and buy only those phones that are available on that network. & stick to that company till their contract expires. You want to change carriers? Not before paying damages, & buying another phone on the other network again. On the contrary, we in India have so much freedom. We go to handset shops & buy which ever phone we like. Then go to carriers.. checkout the plans & buy SIM.. Dont like the plan or rival carrier came up with a better plan???? EASY .. just remove & replace the SIM. Apple are trying to IMPOSE THEIR MODEL ON US riding on the hype iPhone has created in the US (yes it was a flop in Europe .thats why Apple never talks about its sales in Europe). Dont fall for the subsidized price of iPhone... CHECKOUT THE DATA PLAN ATTACHED TO ITS SIM .they will recover the cost through ridiculous data plans. Bill might come to around +++(ATLEAST AMERICANS PAY THAT MUCH) Let me clear one thing though.. iphone is the best looking phone (its touch interface is nothing like you have ever seen ), & best browsing experience out there no doubt ... (& others are fast catching up..check out the android demo at Google IO 2008).... BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS IT ALL COMES DOWN TO FUNCTIONALITY... Those of who buy it... You will be most happy for atmost a week... & then, MARK MY WORDS...YOU WILL START REGRETTING IT!!! My advice...WAIT FOR HTC DREAM!! (powered by android). Still not convinced by then...by all means go for iPhone... So friends lets spread this info to all our friends and help them in making a wise decision..... & those of you who have bought unlocked versions already please share your experiences with others THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.... GOODLUCK!!! I used to be a user/seller of the first generation iphone.. malakas ang kita sa iphone dati, kaso ngayon parang ayaw ko na magbenta kasi nagbebenta na globe tapos ang mahal pa.. di ko na masyado nagagamit yung iphone ko kasi sobrang hirap talaga magtext, specially kung nagdrive ka (pagtrapik lang ako nagtetext hehe).. yung iphone ko dati, i bought it for $430 lang with tax sa US, nasa Php18K lang yung nung 42 pa lang exchange rate. pero yung Iphone 3G, nasa Php37.5K parang sobrang mahal, its not worth it para sa kin.. yung sa mga bibili, wait lang kayo, for sure baba yung price na yan kung wala masyadong demand..
Josh..pls compare iPhone 3g with Blackberry Bold 9000....thanks!
i've had my 2g for over a year and then got the 3g for my bday. i simply love it. touchscreens may not be for everyone but it sure is for me. now my 2yr old daughter is enjoying my old 2g. hehe.
not biting on this iPhone 3G, better yet planning to purchase an N96 or maybe the Xperia X1 from sony ericsson, in the philippines we know if you have this everyone will look at you admiring your phone, but heck the true purpose to call and text and feature pack mobile is compromised.
Nagbibigay lang ng opinyon mga kababayan natin... Animal karin! Masyado kang apektado, Tanga!
iPhone Drawbacks !
1.Cost 40K !!!! 2.Can't receive MMS messages!!! 3.Can't send or receive anything over Bluetooth!!! 4. 2 mega pixel camera with no video. Nokia N95 has a 5 mega pixel camera and full screen video recording and TV-out. Result: You cannot remove its battery. Thanks for replicating one of the biggest flaws of the i-pod, Apple! 5. The camera has little or no options, and the pictures it takes aren't very good. 6. It lacks proper support for Flash websites. 7. It can't record video!!! 8. No songs as ring tones!!! 9. No GPS! 10. It only allows for a maximum of 1 picture to be attached to each e-mail you send! 11. It doesn't have a file browser/organizer! 12. You cannot save documents on it: documents can only be viewed as attachments when they're sent to your e-mail address 13. Heat issues: the i-phone can get very hot when it is in use!!! 14.There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text !!! 15. Whenever you download a song, you lose your old song from iPhone! 16. Apple says between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity, and you have to send it to Apple to get the cell replaced!!! 17. No MMC expansion slot! 18. No third-party applications can be installed! 19. No Voice Dialing! 20. No Games!!! 21. No FM !!!! 22. No SMS delivery report and no SMS forwarding capability!!! Cost 40K !! nice column,
honestly i stop updating my phone about 3 years ago. Up to now some apps is still not functional due to service network limitations. Sugestion ko lang, service network provider should sell phones or gadget that they can give the full function of it. I don't know if we can sue them for this, when you apply for line they will not tell you about phone's limitation. It's a complete fraud... They (network service provider) just want to convince phone fanatics to be their subscriber by buying latest phone without knowing it's the same as your phone three years ago because they services is not improving...... Hey dudes,
Don't go ga-ga over iPhones (or any expensive phones) if you're gonna use it in RP!...As we say it here in the US, it's your network that counts!..If you carry the latest and most expensive cellphone and your network doesn't support the features that it's known for, that's not cool..and it SUCKS!...my first CP here was the tiny Nokia that my siblings (in RP) called "junk"..but hey, that junk has a powerful Cingular network that raises the bar..It gets me browse the internet, email support, google maps, MMS & SMS capacity...honestly, the network in RP sucks! and the monthly bills ? forget it, total rip-off! mobile network here in RP sucks... Now they are on this Broadband business... Any defects????? Absolutely YES!!!!!
Here in singapore, the voice call and mms are cheap and accurate in monthly billings. Unlike in the philippines you will feel like you have been robbed, because of the unclear high priced monthly billings, call for 10 seconds and they charged me for a minute! wow!!! Think about your network provider first before buying phones.
The iphone perfectly works here in the US. It is not designed to work in 3rd world countries. Because you are way way way back. You can't even solve poverty, you expect an iphone to work there?! Get a grip man. One more thing, we don't need txt here, its pathetic.
Hey yayan, This blog is for filipinos only, nobody cares about what you think...
ah, basta ako satisfied na sa HTC diamond Mobile PC na nabili ko sa Al Khobar KSA
Hey yayan (dumb yankee) even we are part of third world country we still know how to buy and classify good mobile phone. Only fool americans embraced and patronizing iphone sucks 3goat.
American finger pointing that the spaniards are dull racist but the truth about racism you american are the original racist. Don't played safe yankee. Go back to USA and don't ever join us here. CHINA TOTALLY WIPED OUT USA IN THE PAST OLYMPIC BWA HA HA HA. Pity on you yankee. Hey yayan, ang yabang mo! You got that bro? Pinoy ka rin alam ko. Pretty soon you are going to be in poverty as well because your country is going down economically. Kaya ka lang nagka iphone kasi inutang mo lang naman sa credit card bwahahaha!
I totally agree with the comments regarding the iphone's capability that relies on networks. It is an expensive phone indeed and to use it in Manila is more of a luxury item than anything else. I live abroad and depending on the network's capability, the iphone is pretty much a useful tool for personal and professional use.
