Wednesday, September 30. 2009Ondoy shows that emergency is a fact of life
The floods of Typhoon Ondoy were extremely devastating. This time, Ondoy did not choose only the poor and marginalized. For the first time, even exclusive villages were flooded. In many cases, both personal and household items were swept away by the flood.
For most, even if the items are still there, they are no longer usable or cannot even be repaired. So many thought they were going to die and being alive seems to be the greatest blessing of the day. The response to help each other was also overwhelming. Neighbors opened their homes to strangers who needed a second or third floor or even a roof to evacuate to. The sharing of money and food is awesome as we see so many people in the supermarkets buying boxes and boxes of foodstuffs not for themselves but to give away. Soon, the reality of having been caught unprepared for much needed expenses to repair homes, offices, buildings, factories, cars, etc. will settle in. Nobody wants to suffer and certainly nobody wants to be caught unprepared when natural calamities strike our homes and communities. We know these things happen and that they happen with regularity. They are a fact of life and we must accept it and do something about it. And yet, why do so many of us always get caught unprepared? We seem to think that when these calamities strike, we will be spared and that it is the others that will bear the brunt of the problem. It’s never us. We grieve for the victims of Ondoy especially those who had family who lost their lives. Losing them is trial enough but for those who lost their breadwinner, moving forward will be so much more difficult. There are several financial reminders needed while the lessons are fresh in our minds. Reminder on Insurance Ondoy’s devastation should remind us to take a second look at the importance of insurance. Those who have family dependent on them should taking life insurance to somehow lessen the pain of their loss. Term insurance does not cost very much. Another is property insurance, specifically for our home, its contents and our cars. For house insurance, the most common perils that you should cover are fire, typhoon, and earthquake. Fire, in particular, can render one completely devastated because, most of the time, you can lose almost everything permanently including your memories (pictures and mementos). But the floods of Ondoy reminded us that floods can be just as devastating as fire. If you had insurance against typhoon, the losses you incurred with the floods would have been covered. Whether or not you own your house, you can consider covering it with insurance. As always, you do not want to claim on insurance and it is difficult to spend on premium payments because you might feel that you are throwing away money for nothing. After all, you do not get any part of your premium payment back. These premium payments are one hundred percent expenses. However, if you can afford it, it is better to be protected. If you don’t own your house, you can cover the contents of your house like furniture, equipment and personal effect. If you do own your house, you should be covered as well for the house itself. Coverage means that if the items covered are damaged by the perils covered, the insurance company pays. While you do not really recover the real things that matter after a fire or typhoon or earthquake, at least the insurance payment will help you buy back some of it and replace to a great extent the physical assets damaged or lost. Word of caution though, read the fine print in your insurance document to make sure you are really covered for what you want. Car insurance has many types of coverage. The most common are for third party liability, theft, and own damage. Insurance coverage for the devastation type by Ondoy must specifically be defined in the policy acquired. As a minimum, it should cover the cost of restoring your car damaged by floods or typhoons. Car accidents can be painful physically to the people involved. It also involves a lot of reporting, documentation with the police and other authorities. However, it becomes even more troublesome it you are not insured. If you own a car, insurance is one of the required costs of ownership. Reminder: Set up cash reserves for personal emergencies One of the very first rules about money management is to pay yourself first so that you can set aside at least six months salary or earnings precisely to cover emergencies. For most income earners, it takes years to build up a six-month cash reserves. If you save ten percent of your monthly earnings, it will take you five (5) years to accumulate six months cash reserves for emergencies. Practically speaking though, there are faster ways to accumulate this goal. For those who did not lose all their assets in the flood, one way is to dispose of some assets we may have acquired and which we do not really get to use today. I am sure, most of us have some idle assets that we can sell and convert to cash now. Look around you. Make an inventory of things like appliances we have more than what we need, e.g. an extra TV, radio, excess furniture, clothes, gadgets, electronic “toys”, etc. Have a good look at these possessions and choose what you can afford to dispose of now. Chances are, losing some of these assets will not diminish or hurt your present lifestyle. Selling theses assets will most certainly contribute to building up cash reserves for emergencies right away. Get started and build your personal cash reserve now! Do not procrastinate. One of these days, it may be too late and you will no longer be able to recover from your emergency losses. Salamat po sa pagtanggap ninyo ng tunay na hangarin ni Mr. Colayco na ipamahagi ang kaniyang personal na kaalaman base sa kaniyang sariling karanasan.
Just want to ask MR, Colayco what to do about my unused and unfinished educational plans of my sons sa Professional Academic Plan. Meron akong 2 High School, and 2 college plans with PAP na nabitin noong nagkaroon ng problem ang economy ng Pinas. Maraming salamat po.

The Professional Group 37 EDSA corner Boni Ave. Mandaluyong City I work as an insurance professional here in the middle east and would like to advise people to consider getting an insurance, may it be life, accident, health, property & casualty, fire, or business to protect our honest interests and be able to reach out to those who are in need when we know that we will have excess funds due to our insurance covers.
The only problem of the insurance industry in our country is that the premiums are too high as compared to salaries. I came from 2 of the largest insurance companies in the Philippines and saw the trend in the insurance premiums overlapping the minimum wage purchasing power level. One example is a pension plan wherein 8 yrs ago, you invest 100k pesos for 300k pesos maturity in 15 -20 yrs paying and waiting period, now you have to pay them up to 250k pesos so you can project same maturity amount. Worse when I saw a premium requiring me to pay 300k pesos to get same maturity amount and the benefit i will get are the accidental riders which are very cheap benefits. The increase in premiums started when people lost their trust in pre-need and insurance companies when some of these firms filed for bankruptcy and eluded obligations. For me, I believe that in addition to inflation and other external economic factors, reasons behind their losses came from wrong actuarial pricing/forecasting and choice of investment vehicle and some fund abuse. I am relating pre-need to insurance, as people mainly think that both are interralated and the nature or flow of businesses are the same. The consumer trust measured down and sales declined which prompted insurance and preneed companies to recalculate and increase their prices. In order for insurance companies to regain trust from people, they should consider the wage levels in pricing their products and design benefits appropriate for the Philippine setting and sell insurance ethically by showing it as a documented promise people can count on during unexpected times. Develop products that would reach out to the low income levels for a wider market and to enable them to know, that they too deserve the good things in life. Here in the middle east, people and companies do not mind though insurance prices are very high as they have a very high purchasing power that can also make insurance companies think of providing more flexible and generous benefits. Governments here also required companies to provide free health insurance covers for their employees and it helped the economy by having successful businesses due to confindent, healthy and financially abundant workforce. to number 3..thank you for this valuable information.it is greatly appreciated.i hope insurance companies will be considerate enough to take into consideration the salary of the ordinary people when making decision in pricing insurance..
You're welcome Biel. Insurance is a big contributor not only to our GDP/GNP or kung anu pang econ indicators, but also on compensating honest and just losses.
To No. 6. - government has separate projects to cover the losses you mentioned. You can aval of non-life insurance cover: calamity, property, fire, jewelries, appliances, travel, mobile phones, etc - for your additional protection. para sa mga kukuha ng life, pension, health, accident & education plans, the ff are impt: 1. check the company financial standing, history, sec/ IC reg. 2. choose the product that fits your needs (savings, protection, health, or combination of any of them)and pay capacity. 3. don't be fooled by generous product offers w/ very low premiums. walang libre sa mundo. ang nagbebenta ng palugi ay malulugi. this is what happened to some preneed and insurance companies. 4. check your purchased plan against the proposal, read the conditions, exclusions and return it or have it corrected in case of discrepancies Bring the docs to any company customer service center for verification. 5. Kumuha habang bata as premiums are lower at a younger age. 6. buy only from a licensed sales agent o broker. ask for company identification docs. thanks, I hope the author of this blog is also sensitive to its readers' reactions. I agree with you. Just to add, Insurance can build confidence to businesses. Financial Institutions like banks will then give relax credit that will result to more investment and oppurtunity. In effect, more jobs will be created, and our economy will grow significantly. I think proper information about Insurance should be one of the platforms of the presendentiables. This is one key to help our economy grow.

even in calamities, you think of business very well said, Sir. i really appreciate your article as i do with your book "Pera Mo, Palaguin Mo". sayang! sana po noon ko pa na-realize ang kagaya sa mga Insurance na yan. but then, it is never too late pa rin. i am now into insurance underwriting and i'm trying to do my best in educating people as to the importance of having insurance be it life or non-life, education or healthcare specifically. kudos! thanks a lot for being generous enough to share what you know as far as financial planning and management of our resources are concerned. thank you for helping us prepare for a better future. still not too many people realize that insurance is more than just a business on the part of the insurance company but it is, in fact, an INVESTMENT OR SAVINGS rather than an expense on the part of the one who got it (policyholder/insured). more power and blessings!
ai, you think it's marketing? its the fact!

hmmm... Insurance have a good benefits naman. make sure you're invest in good company and make a background check. Di natin alam ang mangyayari diba. Its investment after all if you connsider your "things" as investment. Learn from mistakes na lang. Awareness and eye opener lang talaga ang nangyari. If you want to make sure on your insurance, see SEC website kasi alam ko may list sila nun and ung active and down na companies na provider nun.
Thanks to Sir Colayco for the articles. Don't cry over the spilled milk can't stand such mentality. Colayco is not a government authority, go to SEC or insurance commission or DTI if you have some complaints.
gma news: why allow colayco to blog and not react to feedbacks? that's why some here are mislead because the author becomes mum after writing his piece. though i am not required to help, i tried my best to post some useful info and tips just to give light to the wrong perception on the business of insurance. it is unprofessional and not good sometimes that you let people here raise arguments and allow them to throw stones at each other because you did not interfere. thanks, i sooo agree with you..instead of discussing this matter in a civilized way..people here are throwing stones at each other. and please, mind the language..esp if your question is non-blog related..
but thnx for the useful insight regarding insurance, learned a thing or two.. gmanews..this is not a hate site so please try to mediate. We apologize when we are unable to assist Mr. Colayco to answer comments on the blog. We always invite readers to write him at info@colaycofoundation.com which he will always reply to.
With the mentality of filipinos in the philippines, insurance doesn't work.... well, atleast most of them. filipinos are corrupt see, how many thousands are victimised by C.A.P? poor filipinos ain't got money back yet.. First world countries is much better option if you're up to insurance.
CAP and other pre-need companies are not insurance companies. Each of these pre-need companies have their own particular issues to address. It is best to write to the specific pre-need company for their explanation.
I agree w/ the securing insurance both for property & life coz you can't have concrete solns from the gov't. The cause of the flood is truly a human error due to poor urban planning & corruption. And most of the time waisted by local & national government is on politics! the devastation of flood killing hundreds of people is the result of "TOO MUCH POLITICS IN THE PHILIPPINES". If they dont changed it will happen all the time.
Philippines I said ....IF .and... IF......
I know that Mr Colayco is not a govt authority...I requested and asked if he can do a favor..only ... published his BLOGS here and reached anywhere?reponses are expected.. anyway the responses not much..... Philippines your right ..go to proper agencies and file your complaint. AGAIN...Its your choice and understanding....ITS your money..if you had alot of excesses ...GO..INSURED ALL WHAT YOU HAVE...... Just want to clear from the author of this blog about his reminder about insurance...the way he reminded the philippines... the way I responded and personal views. ANYWAY.... PHILLIPINES BE SMART.... your help is avery good act showing kindness and love for others. ...GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH IN GMA CAVITE, is also seeking donations for its Mission churches churches in Montalban, Rizal who have not yet reached by the relief operations. we are also accepting donations in cash or in kind. just text me 09175684405 or call our school line Grace Baptist Christian School of GMA 0469720292 for assistance. thank you very much. may the good Lord bless you more.
Puro kayo mga dakdak. Someone out there is asking information about danvil and cap which are insurance matters too. wala kayo maisagot mga gungungg.
it is not related to this topic. go to SEC of you want. the blog is not about to help you find missing companies.
Ano point mo?, dahil may kumpanya ng insurance na pumalpak/nanloko, masama na ang insurance?
Ang Danvil at CAP ay hindi insurance companies. Each pre-need company has it's own particular issues so you have to write or call them directly.
Hi Sir, good day
Thank you very much for the insite, i've learned a lot from you More power & god bless insight
Alm nyo, this is not the time for us to discuss about this things, marami pa tayong dapat na isipin, at isa pa alam naman natin na halos walang mapagkakatiwalaan na Insurance Agency dito sa atin kasi kung ikaw ay mag apply palang ang galing mag intertain ng mga agent pero kung may nangyayari na, turuan nalang ng turuan kahit sino madadamay, kawawa ang mga nagbabayad para sa Insurance na pinaghihirapan pa ng mga tao. Swedens EU presidency provided emergency aid to Asia-Pacific including the Phils: http://www.se2009.eu/sv/moten_nyheter/2009/9/30/presidency_statement_on_recent_asia-pacific_natural_disasters It would be interesting to get a feedback on what ways, if you have in gmanews have time to research about it. I myself has asked our PM about it in his blog: http://carlbildt.wordpress.com/2009/10/01/bryta-balkanska-blockeringar-i-bryssel/#comment-72994 I agree that 'emergency is a fact of life.' Some emergencies are manageable though while some are even welcomed, e.g., an arrival of a long-missed guest; etc.
Take out the emergency. Calamity-related emergencies are always unfriendly. Rather than prepare though for the aftermath of emergencies, I'll instead "take out the potential emergency. Getting a flooded house maybe an emergency. Take out the "flood" risk. There are things actually that can be done medium and long term. In building / buying a house, pick a place that's historically not flood-prone or is really safe from floods. A house maybe cheap in northwest Manila but the place has annual floods. Sure it does not flood every time it rains but one (1) flood can be as disastrous if not too inconvenient. If one rents only (often selection criteria to get closer to work, school, etc., costing should include 'flood damage' factors. Being close to work, etc. can probably save fare but if 'flood damage' can cost more, it is wrong arithmetic. If for any reason a place historically flood-free gets flooded, do not hesitate to move to another place. Some places get flooded nowadays since more structures have been built and often taking out "excess rain water basins" or worst have blocked natural paths for water flow. I am a renter and moved within 3 months after incurring inconvenience due to floods. In the same flood, the moment I saw the water level go 1/4 up my tires, I had my vehicle brought elsewhere free from flood. Plan-C was a negotiation with a gas station to have vehicle up in a lift for a fee. Plan-D was to bring vehicle to a multi-level parking lot in Makati. Plan-B worked well though and saved me from spending unnecessarily. What's your emergency supply? Mine includes reams of cigarette (good for about two (2) weeks). Emergency stuff is not bought lump sump (just before the emergency situation) but rather a household supply system where "spares / reserve / safety stock" are built over time. I used to buy cigarette when I run out of a pack; nowadays, since years back, I've managed to have an un-opened ream - supply at least good for another week. In this manner, I have avoided having to go into "forced savings" just to build the "emergency supply." This method allowed me also to acquire "nice to have" emergency stuff, built whenever I had spare money and are absolutely dual purpose. Flash light? I smoke and thus buy the cheap lighters with flash lights and always have spares as I want a lighter when and where I need to light a cigarette. Since, I often go to the seas, I have 2 life vest and the biggest coleman container. There's also the airbed (with manual and electric inflators) that I occasionally use. There's also the 100m 1 inch nylon rope (borrowed yesterday to have a roof tied down) now used in a swing and an 11 ft ladder used for cutting tree branches, banana, guava fruits and for a escape route tool if I have to exit via the neighbor's walls . If I have to be displaced from the house, Plan-B is a tent for 3 (used also during picnics) and Plan-C is to move to either to the place of my dad, brother or sister. Plan-D is to stay in a Makati hotel (a good reason to use the credit card). Saving for emergency funds. This would include acquisitions of "nice to have" stuff. I could have saved to buy my stuff but rather than save, it is better to "produce" funds and often there are lots from the house or personal possessions. Even old books still have value; least is scrap value that collected altogether allows one to build emergency supplies. Any room in the house will always have "unused / unwanted" stuff. Collect and sell and if done periodically (at least yearly) allows freeing floor area, storage space, etc. and even makes the house cleaner free from pests and rodents. For prolonged emergencies or rehabilitations, the above funds may not be sufficient. Weather-related emergencies are short lived and thus maximum can be as much as two (2)weeks (extreme) only even if flood waters reached the roof. If it rains heavy again within the 2 week period, you're in the wrong place and did not plan well where one would live. A burnt or earthquake-destroyed house will require a longer "emergency status" rebuilding / rehabilitating tasks. Even an expensive insurance coverage for the house will not place one back into a house within six (6) months, probably not even a year if a 'desirable' house is wanted. One will need at least funds to cover the usual 2 months deposit and 1 month advance rental for an apartment. That's not quite difficult to save really (about p30K) but if one does not have the funds, make sure that you have been good to relatives that can probably attend to your emergency situation. Dear Mr. Rene,
Mr. Colayco will be quoting your comments in his coming articles in Bulgar and goodnewspilipinas.com. Since we do not have your personal info, we will just mention got your comment through this blog. Since this is a public blog, we assumed you would not have any problems with this. Thank you for helping in the financial education of others.
