Friday, September 19. 2008Organize Finances before Working abroad
IT HAS been my advocacy over the past five years to concentrate on teaching financial literacy to income-earning Filipinos. Fortunately or unfortunately, a great majority of Filipinos earning substantial regular income are the Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs. I am quite blessed to be able to get to know them and their problems related to financial literacy up close. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment to be able to assist them in understanding the need to save and to grow their savings so that they may be financially independent when they come back for good in our country.
In the first place, the reasons why they go abroad is a combination of the following and not necessarily in order: 1) Lack of appropriate jobs for them locally. Sometimes, they have job opportunities in the Philippines but they know that they have technical capabilities that will give them better paying jobs abroad. The sense of accomplishment is also a very important part of life. When they lose that feeling, it can be very depressing and the nagging thought that they could have done better in life will haunt them till they grow old. 2) Want the experience and adventure abroad. There are some OFWs who are not really there for the sense of accomplishment but for the thrill of being alone abroad and living a different life. Granted that this might not be a great number of people but it is true especially for those who are young and single. Hopefully, they can combine their work and pleasure. 3) Want for better pay. I can’t say much more about this. Everybody wants better pay whether in the country or outside. Sometimes though, they need to carefully analyze their net pay. I know of some who thought they were getting higher pay in another country but cost of living and other expenses related to moving away actually gave them a net pay lower than what they would be receiving in the Philippines. Based on my and CFE Team's personal experience in dealing with OFWs, it seems that at most, only 10-20% would know how to manage and grow their money. This same ratio probably applies as well to those who stay and work in the Philippines. Personal money management, or applied wealth management is not really taught in schools. It’s only now that we are seeing our advocacy in promoting financial literacy (personal finance) being brought to schools. A group, led by a prominent College in Parañaque and one of the largest (if not the largest) Investment Bank, has put together a Capital Markets Institute of the Philippines (CMIP) to precisely educate teachers who teach finance and economics in investments and personal finance. CFE is fortunate to be actively involved with this group. One of the key and immediate objectives is to reverse the prevailing counter-productive mindset among the earning classes, i.e., the mindset of the "here and now"- the seeming drive to live their chosen lifestyle immediately at any expense up to and including borrowing beyond their means. Pre-Departure Fundamentals Before they even leave the country, first and foremost, they should have a personal financial goal. They should know exactly: 1) How much they are worth. They need to make their Personal Statement of Assets and Liabilities and Personal Income & Expense Statements. 2) They should agree with their family left behind what their budget should be and be ready to send only that and no more. Their family should not be tempted to thinking that they can now spend as much as they want just because their OFW is earning in foreign currency. 3) Remember that in making that family budget, they should follow the formula INCOME-SAVINGS= EXPENSES. It is important that they not only keep some money for their personal expenses abroad but also the savings for themselves. 4) They should try their best to follow the 80-20 rule. They should save 20% of income for their future capital. If they can't save 20% they can start even with 1% but they have to get that winning experience. 5) Need to learn what options they have for saving both here and abroad. They should not just send everything to their family and relatives. In fact, it is better that they make arrangements for direct placements of their investments with financial institutions before they leave. In their working country, on the other hand, they should try to find out the safe methods of keeping their savings. If they feel confident about investing there over the long term with a reputable financial institution, they could do that. The whole end goal of most OFWs is to come home “for good” with enough saved so that they can sustain a fairly comfortable financial life with their family. These goals have to be quantified over specific time periods. They need to monitor their progress and thus should regularly update their personal financial plan. Many times, OFWs become so homesick and start believing that they have enough saved and that they can easily find a job or business when they come home. They start believing that what they have saved will tide them over until they find the job or business. Unfortunately, many times this is not a realistic assumption. If they still need a job, they should be relatively sure they have that job before coming home for good. For those who dream of getting into business, they should prepare for the business that they intend to get into. They should prepare themselves together with their family in identifying what business they will get into, thoroughly study the identified business and have a complete plan in how to set it up and start operations. Ideally, the business should already be running even before they give up their job abroad. They can start to prepare for this by working on their plans each time they come back for their vacation. One of the better ways to do this is to look into franchise businesses that fit their goal. In some cases, Franchisors can provide active management of the business in the start-up year. This way, the OFW or his family member can be taught how to run the business on-the-job. There is no better way to prepare and train than going through this kind of hands-on training. Typical Back-For-Good Situations When they are finally home in the Philippines, some OFWs say they cannot adjust to the new life. Most of the time, it is because they realize that what they have saved is not enough. This is so because it usually is taking them longer to find a job or to think or put up a new business. In this case, their only choice really, is to cut down on their expenses drastically until they are able to settle down. Those who have lived in the Philippines all their lives know that setting up businesses can lead to a lot of frustration especially since the choice of business should be dependent on the passion of the person, interest, size of market and sufficient funding. To all the OFWs out there, always remember the saying that “The grass is always greener on the other side.” Examine your options well whatever side you are in now before making important decisions to uproot yourselves and move overseas. Long time no blog si Sir Colayco, welcome back po.. Kamusta na kayo?
Very informative, Sir. Thanks for posting this. Hope you can write about how to prepare a Personal Statement of Assets and Liabilities and Personal Income & Expense Statements. More power.
Nikki, nasa page 71 & 74 ng bestseller ni Sir Colayco yan na "Wealth Within Your Reach, Pera Mo Palaguin Mo" available sa National Bookstore.
hindi kaya maging "pera mo palaguin ko pero mas malaki ang tubo ko" hehe..just kidding...mahirap na magtiwala ngayon pare, mukhang may bagyong parating,,dapat makiramdam muna..we'll just keep our hard earned money in our pocket for the mean time
Thanks alot !
I am leaving the country soon I need this informations you posted here. Please post more.... I will be reading at the other side of the world. Mabuhay Pilipinas!! no matter what this place is still the best. I gonna miss this place and hopefully I am able to manage my family finances correctly even Im not physically present. It really requires more maturity, organized planning, obedience, love and communications to make everyone lives easy there for me and here for my family. More power... hello sir! nice article! just want to know if my money I'm saving with Danvil Plans, Inc soon to be handled by Legacy Consolidated Inc is safe? Is it a good investment for my future? Please I need ur advice. I'm an OFW here in DUbai. Working hard for my familys future n my retirement in the Phil. Pls.Is it safe to continue paying DAnvil/Legacy?PLs Mr. Colayco, I need ur advice. Thanks!
If you dont mind pwede po ba malalaman kung ano ininvest mo?
Ambilis naman magpalit ng pangalan ng firm na yan, dati Family First yan ah, ngaun Danvill, then Legacy and so forth di ba mukhang kaduda-duda na yan?
Sir,
I learned my lesson investing in funds, as what professional investors advice diversify your investments. What made me study and look for other ways to have my money invested is the failure of my kids' educational funds with CAP, remember that? I thought that was really a seccured investment investment, that money could have earned a lot had I learned about treasuries, bonds, securities, and mutual funds fifteen years ago. If I lost that amount of money from CAP which I presumed a sure and wise investment years ago, why can't I have the courage to other investments like the stock market I would say almost the same risk right? You could ask Mr. Colayco what Php 300,000 would have earned if it was properly invested in the market fifteen years ago. I had already think about it, and you should now. Sir Ely, medyo naresearch ko na yung sinabi mong kung naginvest ka ng 300k sa mutual fund 15 yrs ago, and kung ano na napala mo ngayon.. frackly speaking, tingin ko you will not gain that much, kasi maabutan mo yung Asian Financial Crisis nung late 90s, 97-98 ata yun. sa pagkakaalam ko, it took them 5 yr just to regain the loss from that crisis tapos rememebr nung 2001 9/11, bumagsak din lahat ng investment worldwide, and it took a couple of yrs din para ma regain yung lost.. and this year ulit, bagsak ulit, feelng ko nga niloloko lang tayong lahat ng mga investment firm kasi yung mga investment firm, alam nila kung kelan ilalabas ang pera para di sila masyado tamaan, pero tayo itatambak lang natin pera natin sa kanila, ang tendency kung tumaas salamat, kung bumagsak wala rin tau magagawa.. nagsisisi nga ako bakit ako naglagay ng pera sa mutual fund, sana bumili nalang ako ng apartment, nakikita ko pa kung san napunta pera ko, kesa sa mutual fund, para kang tanga na wala kang magawa kung san ka dalhin ng alon dun ka nalang pupunta, in short di mo controlado yung situation. opinion ko lang po ito
For those asking for Mr. Colayco's comments or advice, you should write to info@colaycofoundation.com. Mr. Colayco or the CFE Team answers when you write there. I've tried....
hi jammy, any news abt danvil / legacy? i would really want to be over and done with this - til now i stil regret that i ever signed up. I have only 1 more yr to go. didnt rcv any other info or or's after their last mailer/announcement re transfer. i should realy give them a visit one of these days...not even sure if they have moved again or not!

Aray! Only then, I started savings. Kaso sa mga savings na ito I also tried to venture into business and bought shares kaso both failed, mukhang inaalat talaga. Siguro mga another 5-7 years pa, pede na akong magretiro.
Pare, suko na ako sa 10 peso a day. Napag-isip isip ko malabo mangyari na un. Ang tagal kasi, kakainip hehehehe!
Nagliliwaliw pa siguro si Pareng Buddy. Good morning mga Pare,
With regards to Mr. Colayco's blog, good boy muna ako. I agree, 100percent.

But There's always hope. The Sun's still shining. May Narinig ako sa kaibigan ko, sabi niya "do not worry about mr. tomorrow, for Mr. tomorrow will worry about itself". Let us live one step at a time. As Mr. Colayco had said, just 10 pesos a day, hehehe.

Ayos yang mga binitiwan mo parekoy ah, I will not be Mr. Tomorrow, magiging Mr. Present na lang me ngaun.

Good morning Pareng Sev. Kaya mo bang mamuhay sa Probinsya pare? I doubt. hehehe.

Pareng Glenn,
I have your books actually. Madali akong maloko eh. hehehe. Pareng Sev. Thanks to you Pare. To Mr. Colayco, Keep writing sir. dito lang kaming tatlo ni Pareng Sev and Pareng Glenn.
THE WHOLE TITHE INTO THE STORE HOUSE,THAT THERE MAY BE FOOD IN MY HOUSE.TEST ME IN THIS"SAYS THE LORD ALMIGHTY,AND SEE IF I WILL NOT THROW OPEN THE FLOODGATES OF HEAVEN AND POUR OUT SO MUCH BLESSING THAT YOU WILL NOT HAVE ROOM ENOUGH FOR IT.. THANKS AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL. hi! Mr. Colayco,
Nawa'y tayong mga nasa Abroad ay mahanap natin ang mga sagot kung paano malalampasan ang pangungulila sa mahal sa buhay..mabuhay tayong lahat na nagsisikap para sa pamilya at bayan... i agree w/u mr superman27. primary purpose nmin ng X-husband ko s for r future and just like others mpagbayad ng utang. sa 22o lng lubog talaga kmi. b4 he left nagpaliwanagan kmi kng magkano lng ang dapat nya iremit sa akin. enough 2 pay for our obligations and skoling ng kids. very little for the savings. unfortunately, nd ntupad yon. a year after he left, he forgot about his commitment @ nambabae p.i asked him 2 comeback kc nawala n yng driven purpose nya. 4 us 2 start all over again. . .
Hello Edi-ann,
San ba napadpad yung mister mo at nambabae? It’s just my 1st tym 2 join n dis blog but I’m starting 2 njoy it. sev, buddy and glen, it’s nice 2 know that I’m also gaining friends lyk u. I guess as wat mr colayco said I’ve got 2 follow his formula income- savings = expenses. Although syempre medyo mahirap. sev, I really understand how it feels 2 b an OFW. Mahirap. But wat bothers me most of the tym, people tend to blame those who were left behind here s falling out ng marriages. We, who were left behind here has also r own sacrifices. Unlyk s OFW movies wat happened 2 me s d other way around. Yng X-husband ko p ang nagloko. He’s n australia now. Well past s past. We should learn from our own experiences. Ky nga Cmula lng mbasa ko yng blog n mr colayco & saw some of his TV appearances I immediately knew n marami akong malalaman sa kanya about finances.

So we would like to welcome you as one of our friends here in the blog world.
Hi Ms. Edi-Ann,
Buddy here, best friend nila Pareng Sev and Pareng Glenn sa Blog ni Mr. Colayco. You know what I mean. Tama ba Pareng Sev at Glenn? Hi Ms. Edi-Ann,
Wow! I am very impressed. Madiskarte ang tawag dyan. I admire you. I think I have crush on you, hahaha. Joke lang wag magagalit. Honestly, you are doing good. Keep going, do not quit. Bilib din ako kay Mr. Colayco, though not 1000percent ng kaniyang advice tama, according to my own judgement. Thank you guys. I admit hanggang ngayon di ako agree doon sa "FANTASY" niya, 10pesos a day then 28.8m in 40 years, hehehe. To me this is a BIG joke of Mr. Colayco, knowing that many big investments co. ay bumabagsak. Sino ang tatanggap ng 10pesos para isugal ang pera natin ...a day... then maghintay ng 40 years? Hahaha. hilarious! Well tapos na tayo doon. Idol ko pa rin siya hanggang ngayon. Keep writing Mr. Colayco... Nandito lang kami. God bless you po and your co.

Hi, superman27. Wat an unwavering faith! Tnx for all the inspiring words. 2lad din kau ni buddy who wud always put their family next to God. Sana nga lahat ng OFW wil be lyk u. yng tipong nd mawawala kailan man ang driven purpose why they have 2 go abroad and make sacrifices. It’s true dat we should know how 2 spend our money wisely and to have a time frame on how long do we only have to be working abroad para magkaroon tau ng savings and spent d rest of ur lives w/ur own families. Ganoon nman talaga ang dapat d b. simply living.
Wat mr colyaco wrote s a guiding principle not only 4 those who are working abroad but 4 those who were left behind.
Dear Melvin,
I think safe ang RT bonds kasi It is a Govt Securities. Mula pa noon I invested my savings yearly sa RT Bonds at every 3 months, Banks credited the interest and also upon maturity. Anyhow try your luck. Try also in BDO who knows,. Kuripot of Riyadh hi sir,
your very true talagang dapat maging wise spender. hindi porket nasa abroad ang asawa ay maging magastos na. actually, i learned my lesson this is our nth chance to save money and i will follow now your formula na income- savings = expenses...thats the way it should be handle. thanks for enlightment my day.god bless. Pwede kayang baliktarin?
Income-Expenses= Savings? Or Income= Savings + Expenses? Mukhang pepede di ba? Actually formula lang naman yan which you can always play with. The most important thing to have is discipline in handling money. Thank you for the advice. Very useful post. Keep it coming!
hehehe magastos yan pare yung kotse, mahal gasolina ngaun.
years i stay in saudi.....7years ba yon i got my gf there....saan nga ba yong hospital????forgot na happy moment in riyadh/jeddah/khobar....... yes it true na maraming natutukso????both male and famale....talagang malapit ang tukso???? if youre alone...away from home.... try to find friends that bring you happiness in jesus.... or try to study financial literacy...wag basta mag tiwala sa investment... they are claiming they give much gain/////....advice from your expert engineer.they can compute the probalitlity........ sige mga kapuso ger IRAN mga kapuso.
try to read RICH DAD POOR DAD a good a perspective in life you can add.in gaining financial goal... dati di ko sila pasin....but one day na realize ko na kasama sa pag ulad ang tamang paghawak ng financial mo. avid fan ako ni mr.colayco'mga books nya na read ko rin.... so mga kapuso...try....nyo ger iran Ahh, yes ... all of rich dad's fortunes are invested in their business while all of poor dad's moneys are saved in the bank (with little interest) and being used by rich dads.
Small investors are "sacrificial lambs" of giants like lehman bros. Your invested fortunes are at their mercy. Maybe we should try this equation: Target savings = maximized income - flexible expenses This equation is only true if mixed with the "WILL" ingredient: 1) the "WILL" to save 2) the "WILL" to maximize income 3) the "WILL" to adjust spendings accordingly After this equation, you'll probably look for the right investment formula, which we probably may learn from "rich dads". Though big or small, investments have ups and downs. Dear All,
Thank you ver much! With that, marami akong nakuhang idea based sa actual experiences ninyo. I'll try to spend more time reading Mr.colaycos blog to gain more idea as well mga feedback and comment niyo. More power and God bless magaling na Sir, madali sabihin na organize your finances before working abroad dahil wala ka sa katayuan naming mga mahihirap, kaya nga kami nagtarbaho sa abroad para magkaroon ng pera, eh kung may pera lang kami bakit pa pupunta ng abroad...ang labo...
organize ur finances before working abroad??? mas maganda siguro organize ur finances after working abroad..mas kapa-kapaniwala. thanks,
to anonymous, it is true....kaposo na tayong maliit e kakaining ng big time investor??? watch out sa U>S. economy sino ang kumikita million of dollar>>>>//// CEOs plus dami pa silang share na mabibili pag mura.....then binta uli pag tumaas na.....ganoon ang laro nila dyannnn..... like sa mga company...insurance....pag di nila kayang bayaran ang mga naka-insured....declared lang ng bank???cy.... din lusot na sila....im i right mga kapuso.....correct if im wrong. pa advice ng kay mr. colayco bakit family first nagpalit names to danvil to legacy/?????? damay pa ata kinuha nmin insurance policy????? ger of IRAN sarap sana mag-ipon no? kaso sa eskwelahan napupunta ang ipon =) 2 kasing pamangkin ko puro nasa college. wala kasing work kuya ko, tapos maintain pa namin sa gamot dahil nastroke.

Dear Blog Readers & SadOFWReader,
Yes Im also an OFW here in Qatar for 15 Years now. I've read all the commented topics i.e. TPG, Mr. Colayco, Financial Prof Plans, LBC, etc. before it was deleted. I think Im mature enough to judge what is right & what is wrong from what I have read. From my judgement, most of the Comments which was Deleted were mostly from OFWs from different countries like Saudi, Dubai, Qatar, Singapore, etc. own experiences on Mr. Colayco's investment company. From GMANeEWS.TV Editor Note on the last Comments he/she said "Other people want to learn based on the topics discussed. Please respect them." From this quote, My question is, How can Blog Readers like millions of OFWs all over the World can learn....based not only from Mr. Colayco's blog but also from experiences of OFW which was shared & intentionally deleted? GMANEWS.TV Editor just a simple advise, OFW Experiences is the best lesson which all your Readers can have. Not only truthful but also not a fictional. This is just my cent of comments and I just hope you won't delete too. Thanks & more power to all Kapuso. OFW are always here reading your News and Blogs anywhere in the World. - Jimmy Ong (Qatar Gas) TO: GMANeEWS.TV Editor
