A gift from Cory Aquino

Posted on 01 August 2009 by GMANews.tv

Back in September, she had been suffering from cancer for at least six months, had undergone chemotherapy, and was only making rare public appearances, let alone sit-down interviews. She just didn’t have the strength.

Our public affairs team at the time was producing a special program called Newsmakers, featuring all the living Philippine presidents past and present. Cory Aquino, of course, had to be an integral part of the show. But she was ailing, and our producers had the delicate task of trying to arrange for her to still be part of the show, if it was at all possible.

After her three daughters Ballsy, Pinky and Viel were interviewed together for the show, they promised they would try to convince their mom. Sure enough, Ballsy — the daughter who was also Cory’s right hand during her six years in Malacanang — texted a day later to say her mother had agreed to be interviewed.

According to program manager Ella Evangelista-Martelino, who conceived of the project, the interview was initially set to take place at her office in the Cojuangco Building in Makati, but “Cory decided to see us at Times instead as this might be more convenient for us. How considerate could she be!” Martelino recalls.

(Times refers to the home on Times Street in Quezon City that Cory shared with husband Ninoy and their children.)

Cory finally sat down on September 3 with Jessica Soho for one of her last full-length interviews. Frail but smiling, and summoning a still-sharp memory, she gave us more than an hour of reminiscence, insights, and just the down-to-earth goodness that endeared her to the nation. None of us dared talk about it at the time, but all those who were at the shoot knew this would be one of their final encounters with her, if not the very last.

“I still have great hopes. Tayong mga Pilipino, sasabihin, ‘Ano ba naman, bakit hindi tayo umangat katulad ng iba nating kalapit bansa?’ Sabi ko, darating at darating din iyon.”

She herself talked almost matter-of-factly about soon joining Ninoy, with the tone of contentment of someone who felt she had already accomplished her life’s mission on earth. Even as she neared death, her calmness served as a lesson for us all.

She was interviewed in the living room within sight of a portrait of her as a young attractive woman by national artist Fernando Amorsolo, a gift from Ninoy early in their marriage.

Alas, our airtime for Newsmakers could only include a few minutes of that conversation with Jessica. But we felt that Cory agreed to speak not just for the show but as a way of leaving some parting words for the nation.

“I realized I have so much to be grateful for.” The paintings in the background are by the former president. She took up painting in her retirement.

In the “A gift from Cory Aquino” video, and in the previous one we uploaded while she was still alive (Cory Aquino: Woman of our time), we chose some of her most revealing soundbites, the ones that moved us most, and the nuggets of wisdom and encouragement that we want future generations to take to heart.

This is one of her farewell gifts to us — to those of us at GMA News and Public Affairs who were fortunate enough to be part of that production… and to the Filipino nation that she loved unconditionally.

Thank you, Tita Cory.

– Howie Severino

From the interview, recalling her campaign against Marcos in early 1986:

Alam mo, parang gusto kong maiyak dahil ang hirap na nila, yet they were giving whatever they had to me.

Tita Cory was the unifying factor in a country left in shambles, like a shepherded who led her sheep to clear waters. She bought back democracy to the people who wanted change and has suffered more than enough and freed them from the chains of martial law.

Cory is a woman for all season and for all reason. Her crucial decision to salvage what was left of the tragedy that befell her family by the callous and premeditated slaying of her husband catapulted her to world’s acclamation of her courage, creating a rippling effect on countries where desecration of human rights and the trampling with impunity the democratic system of freedom and liberty is enthroned supreme. She set the stage, a light brightly shining and beckoning to this day of what every person should be: one man ( woman )with courage makes a majority.

No succeeding nor preceding president of this nation has ever done such democratic acts than what thi simple housewife had done. I challenge the current government to be a Cory, or more than a Cory. I challenge you who are sitting in such given positions to do your part and restore the life of this dead nation.

  38. Anelito Balderrama of Taguig City Says:

CORY & THE PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION HAD A SIGNIFICANT PART IN OUR LIVES. MY FORMER GIRLFRIEND & I WERE MEMBERS OF A CAUSE ORIENTED GROUP (FILIPINO DEMOCRATIC STUDENT - FIDES, & KABATAAN PARA SA NASYONALISMO AT DEMOKRASYA - KANDILA) IN 1983 - 1986. WE’VE ATTENDED EVERY RALLIES, DEMONSTRATION AND PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN FOR CORY. WE SAW AND MET HER VERY OFTEN UNTIL THE DICTATOR WAS OUSTED. AFTER THE 4 DAYS VIGIL IN EDSA WE MARCHED TO MALACANAN AND REGAINED OUR VICTORY, THE RESTORATION OF DEMOCRACY. AFTER THAT, MY GIRLFRIEND AND I DECIDED NOT TO GO HOME. INSTEAD WE EXTENDED ANOTHER 4 DAYS IN CAVITE THAT MADE US HUSBAND AND WIFE AND BLESSED WITH EIGHT CHILDREN. OUR CONDOLENCE TO THE AQUNO FAMILY. WE’VE LOST A GREAT LEADER & AN ACUMEN MOTHER THE FILIPINO EVER HAVE.

I have been closely following up the events of our country Philippines as it unfolds and it was only during the presidency of Corazon Aquino that my faith towards our government have been restored. Now that she is gone, my faith to the people in the government who is running the affairs of our country has also died.

  40. Marc Guerrero Says:

    Carry on, Noynoy!

  41. patrick Says:

I watched the interview made by Jessica Soho with Mrs. Aquino. During the interview, i can see how true and humble this person is. She said something about her being the Woman of the year, at first you will notice her bragging about it, but ultimately she smiled and said: she won’t make it without GOds help and the Filipino’s help. she returns everything to God who really is the source of everything. She never forgets that its the Filipino people who gave her the priviledge to be a Woman of the year. try making gloria macapagal-arroyo a woman of the year? she will never be thankful for us. The only reason she is thankful because she gets to steal all our money and she has the POWER. GREED thats the reason why she wants to stay in power, plus if she does’nt win she can probably get caught of whatever anomalies she has done in the past.

Anyway its all about Cory. I will pray for you, just as you prayed for our country. Please continue to pray for us Madam President. WE know that you will be with our creator. Now you can talk to him better and i know you will ask him to bless our country. WE love you not just as a president but as a mother of our democracy.

    SALAMAT……..PAALAM
    Maraming-maraming salamat,mahal naming ina,

Nagdadalamhati ang buong kapuluan, mapa bata man o matanda.

Muli mo kaming pinag-isa at pinagsama-sama.
Sayang, sana kami’y iyong naririnig at nakikita.

Saan ka man naroroon, mahal naming ina,
Sinimulan mong dmokrasya amin ngayong tinatamasa,
Kami ngayo’y malaya na, kaya maraming-maraming salamat at paalam po MAHAL NAMING INA………

    Dear Pres. Cory

We thank God for giving you to set a good example to all the Filipinos.
You are the only President who is not corrupt in the Phil. history, humble, simple, prayerful God fearing and prioritize the welfare of the people especially the poor. You have the qualities of a good leader selfless and sacrificial love. A non-corrupt leader is a non-corrupt government. For a selfish person has a corrupt mind and wants to stay in power and you are far beyond that. You had done a great mission indeed and you are the voice of God’s people and the poor. May the heavenly rewards be with you. Pray for us Filipinos you loved unconditionally.

    Whether it’s a broken friendship,
    Whether it’s a loss of self-esteem,
A look in her eyes can be a guide,
A guide unto the path of my freedom.
    Ms. Fix-It can fix anything,
My faith, my attitude, my everything.
Her atmosphere is filled with imaginable things.
Such a beautiful person inside and out,
So lovely that it makes me want to do the same,
So manipulative in a good way that makes me initiate.
    Her walk is invincible,
Her voice is louder than a lion’s roar.
    Everything about her is amazing
And I wouldn’t ask for anything more.

thank you for making the filipinos proud of you

    REST IN PEACE………………

  108. Raul Says:

For me all politicians are the same, they are never true, but when Cory decided to go against Marcos, that was the only time I really got involved.
At that time I, together with my cousins would have followed her to any battle she would have gone to. We found in her a person not tainted by any political muck that envelopes almost all politicians. Alas when she finally emerged victorious we did not do or help her enough to totally succeed in raising up our nation and people. Coup after coup, she had to manuver behind all those political backstabbing and power tripping persons around her. Fortunately for us, she has enough courage nd fortitude to survive all of those. It is just right and befitting that we now pay tribute to the immesurable contribution and sacrifce she has given us. The question now for us filipinos is, are we going to just let things stay the same and wallow in apathy or will we finally wake up and raise ourselves up as a proud race and live up to our supposed potential?

  109. Robert_Rina_Sarah_Jason Says:

  110. ronald Says:

    I will miss you…

  111. WINA M. HERNANDEZ Says:

I AM GRATEFUL THAT IN MY LIFETIME, I SAW THE MOST IMPORTANT, IF NOT CRUCIAL EVENTS IN OUR HISTORY. I CAN WRITE TO YOUNGER GENERATIONS OF MY FAMILY THE TRUTH THAT UNFOLDED BEFORE MY EYES ON PHIL. HISTORY CIRCA 1980 - 2010.

THE INTERVIEW DONE BY JESSICA SOHO ON PRES. CORY IN SEPT. 2008 IS WORTH KEEPING FOR POSTERITY. I THANK GMA 7 FOR THIS GEM OF WORK.

ONE THING I LOVE PRES. CORY FOR IS WHEN SHE MADE STATEMENT THAT MAKES US ALL FILIPINOS PROUD OF: SHE WAS THANKFUL THAT GOD MADE HER A FILIPINO!

I TOLD MY ONLY SON, ALJON, THAT THERE IS SOMETHIG SO SPECIAL ABOUT BEING A FILIPINO.. DO NOT LOOK FAR ENOUGH, JUST LOOK AT AND REMEMBER PRES. CORY.

FAREWELL CORY… AS INTIMATE AS I COULD BE, I WANT TO CALL YOU SIMPLY CORY, THE BELOVED…

MY OWN SISTER, JUDY, ALSO PASSED AWAY LAST JULY 16 OF THE SAME ILLNESS, CANCER. I COULD NOT GET OVER HER DEATH THAT HAPPENED SO SOON, BUT WHEN YOU DIED AUG. 1, ONLY THEN DID I REALIZE THAT ONE HAS TO GO BACK TO HER MAKER AND THAT IT HAPPENS FOR A PURPOSE.. BECAUSE OF YOUR DEATH, I ACCEPTED THE SUDDEN DEMISE OF MY BELOVED SISTER, AND COURAGE AND STRENGTH CAME BACK TO MY SYSTEM. MY FAITH IN GOD INCREASED AND BY NO MEANS WILL IT EVER DIMINISH. THANK YOU, CORY. TO MY LIFE, YOU HAVE GIVEN THE MOST THAT IMPACTED ON ME; TO SEE ME THROUGH ROUGH TIMES AHEAD IN THIS WORLD TEEMED WITH STRUGGLES AND SORROW. NOT ONLY DID YOU AFFECT OUR NATION, YOU AFFECTED EVERY SOUL IN THIS BEAUTIFUL GOD-GIVEN COUNTRY OF OURS TO DO OUR SHARE OF FINALLY TRANSFORMING OUR COUNTRY INTO A COUNTRY WORTH LIVNG AND DYING FOR.

i read the complete transcript of the said interview, and it was inspiring to read about her thoughts & feelings about what she’s gone through (& was going through at that time). how i wish i could adopt the same attitude towards life & God. and how i wish that she will continue to inspire us filipinos. so that struggling through her funeral procession, wearing yellow, displaying ribbons, shedding tears for her are not enough. so that her examples of simplicity, genuine faith, courage, honesty, concern for others will be emulated by us in the government, business, work, community & family. just like w/ Jesus, i think, that will be the true miracle.

i hope the full transcript can be posted again because i’d love to read it again. thanks!
