Saturday, June 16. 2007‘Defense wins championships’
CLEVELAND, Ohio - If there is one term that would best describe the 2007 NBA champions San Antonio Spurs, it would have to be that it is a "sound" team.
Just like franchise player Tim Duncan, the Spurs are so fundamentally sound. On offense the team shares the wealth. No one can be accused being a ball hog as everyone gets touches as they move the ball around in their vaunted half-court set. But where the spurs are at their deadliest is when they play defense. The Spurs' stingy defense is credited to coach Greg Popovich who demands perfection from his players on both ends of the floor. But emphasis should be on stopping opposing teams. Lebron James found it tough finding an open lane against the Spurs' almost perfect "deny middle" approach, which took away almost all the high-flying acts of LBJ23. Hounded all series long by the Spurs' defensive specialist Bruce Bowen, the usually prolific Lebron settled for off-balanced jumpers and desperation three pointers to finish with a dismal 36 percent from the field, not only that "the chosen one" turned the ball over 23 times during the four game series versus the Spurs. With the deadly James in check, it became a lot easier for NBA finals MVP Tony Parker and pivotal player Manu Ginobli to put the finishing touches on San Antonio's 4th championship in nine years once again proving that indeed "defense wins championships." Yes it is True that DEFENCE wins Championships, and OFFENCE wins games..
LJ was too young to defeat the Spurs chemistry. Next season it will be difficult for LJ because the other teams saw his weakness (jumpshots). LJ was lucky that Bowen only guards around the Free Throw area. It is his chance to show that he is a scoring machine, but the spurs knows he is only strong in the inside, so they guard the inside instead his perimeter shots. Next season I want to see James "The Flight" White play and join the slam dunk contest in the NBA. This is something for the kids not for defence.. Last one Chino, please tell Quinito Henson that his guess for this season champion is wrong (Rockets). He never mention something about my Spurs..

it's not only the defence why the spurs won the series, it's also because of experience. cavaliers is a very young team compare to the spurs. although i agree that defence is the main factor of the game but spurs shows that they are the the team to beat as far as experience is concern.

The big D...
The third best defensive Cav's team in the league did't look like they were, against the powerhouse Spurs. Defence define Championship in basketball or in any team sports, the Cavaliers in result they've been outplay by their opponent. The spurs did it all concerning in defending the basket, how many times duncan make a shot block, even horry help the spurs in blocking shots, how many times spurs steal the ball? and in the other side of the team how many times Cav's make a turnover without being forced by Spurs. I think the Defence Presence of Spurs in court make the Cav's made a lot of mistake or bad decision. The Cav's have a good look in the basket but the ball won't go in the basket. They've didn't give a good defence to defend Tony Parker(TP), Tony is too much to handle for the Cav's. Thats why TP is named NBA MVP of the Finals. That's why i beleive what coach Mike Brown said "there's always a first time for everything" that's why the Cav's exit and being swept in the NBA Finals for the FIRST TIME. The consistency of the San Antonio Spurs and not able to panic makes them a Champion. From the very beginning of the finals game the Cav's show a weak defence to compete with the Spurs in result they've paid the huge price of not defending well to be named a team champion for 2006-2007 season.

Hey! You borrrow does words from Michael Jordan. Do you think, you can compare the "San Antonio Spurs" to the mighty Chicago Bulls defense in the 90's. Who's your best pick? Please comment on that!

Sir Tsino3nidad,
NBA Finals was over. Maybe it's now time for you to focus your ball reporting stuffs to our PHILIPPINE BASKETBALL TEAM! We are all wondering how they’re playing individually and as a team? Although there’s printed news on their games but seeing them play no matter what the result is, is the most exciting reward that will fulfill our day! Sir Tsino3nidad, I hope you will hear my far cry. Someday you will be a PBA commissioner and I hope you will give what the fans want? Salamat po!

COACH owned the very vital role in basketball game as well, he’s responsible for planning of both plays (offense + defense).
Care – he’s there to set and command what execution he feels right. His will is to defend the team. Observe – If the executions is poor he’ll then set another plays, Innovation should start after earning poor performance. Analyze – After improving the performance and getting the right executions, perfect plan has been established. Communicate – Interactions w/in the team, shared ideas must also given an importance, this is how will you address the plan. Help – merely TEAMWORK! Basketball is like a chess game, it’s a total team effort in which offense and defense executed. Hi Chino, Hope we could have some topics about whose great coach in the land today local and foreign. As of now for me, Popovich is very intelligent coach. He sees what ahead of them and be able to adjust what is needed as evident in the recent series. Local, Coach Siot T. of SMB, obviously he able to bring the Beermen to semi-final even though having a bad start this conference and having import w/c not scoring much. You’ll see what impact the coach in the team, Some D’s I describe Siot T. DISCIPLINE DETERMINE DRIVEN DEFEND DIAGRAM Coach can’t be measured by how many wins he get w/ his superstar players around him, nor by how many fans cheers and surround them; instead coach will be measure by his expertise in controlling his team even without superstars and brings what best to the team. Galing ng beermen – pina iyak nila ang Coke at Ginebra..

Defense wins championships only applies in the NBA. They have the best skilled offensive players in the world so containing/neutralizing/stopping/or whatever you guys wanna call it would really be credited to defense....
it does not apply to us filipinos cause we cant shoot.... In the PBA, if you look at those really good championship teams, they have a heck of quality scorers... Patrimonio of purefoods, jolas, hawkins, abarientos of alaska, the spark of ginebra, meneses and da bull of sunkist, danny s. of san miguel.. etc,....shell had marzan and chris jackson but not until another offensive freek named paras got them on the ship and getting his 2nd MVP award.. they kept on saying that the smb team of the early 2000 was a defensive team, but they have Danny S. Danny I. chamba racela, these guys average atleast 15 a game that yaer. 15 a game is BIG in the PBA.... by the way, SMB won against ginebra, there no way you can credit defense on that.. ginebra missed thier shots, which is normal with basketball.thats wat you call breaks of the game.Gozales had 10 points in the 4th and calagiuo scored 9 in overtime, what the heck this #11 blog is talking about...

Ul*l!
Shame on you to say that. Filipino do know how to play defense! Loyzaga for example.. "i think you're still in your dad's egg on their era." Wat did SMB do to ARIGO(Coke) they forced him to travel and wat do you call on that SMB play?.. "i think your eating talangka on this moment" and to Ginebra, SMB switched their defense from double teaming Nealy to zone defense, and that brought them to come back from the game having 16pts deficit entering 4th Q. You cannot perfect defensive plan in whole game.. Its just how you see your defense is improving by limiting your opponent from scoring.. intyindi utak talangka?? wipe up your tears na..

wers the D that your talking about with smb.... i hope you dont say sumthing personal sa reply mo, its just a blogg,,, c'mon........

kaya maganda ang depensa ng spurs, dahil is LBJ23 lang naman ang babantayan nila e.. so parang 5 vs 1.. so anong mahirap dun..kaya para sa akin hindi yun ang big factor..Aminin na natin na kaya natalo ang Cavs dahil veterans ang SPURS sa finals, marami silang magagaling na players compared sa cavs..at maganda ang execution nila ng plays..wala ring dominant players sakanila at lahat pwedeng mag step up para makapuntos..defense is always part of the game but not the main factor for spurs.

CHINO> This has been a problem with commentary this past few finals... Its just you and quinito giving too much UNNECESSARY INFO... like what does other members of the ball players family do.. the players filipino connection... improper announcement of who fouled or what happened on the court... leaving us viewers having the question... did he do it? and then after hearing the court announcer you take it back... weird...
so just a suggestion... just leave it to the usual nba commentary team, less cost for the networks... and if you still want to go there... then stick with the play by play without the over reaction and the INFORMATION OVERLOAD and INACCURACY.

Spurs are a complete team, they keep key players and play IN YOUR FACE DEFENSE.
Every Championship team has "several" go-to players: the Bulls have Jordan and Pippen, The Lakers have Magic and Kareem, the Oldest Celtics teams have Bill Russel and Bob Cousy. Last years champs Miami Heat have Shaq & Dwyane Wade. If I where Coach Mike Brown someone should step-up as the other go-to guy. Ilgauskas was the 2nd guy for me but he was inconsistent. I would hope that Drew Gooden and Damion Gibson(?) would step up next season if they want to win the championship

Dear Chino,
Thanks!

A team that has no defense will never become a champion. and additon to that is team work. San Antonio Spurs is Great team and every player knows thier role in the team.
Com chino, your such a good commissioner. . . More power comm.

Spurs win for a simple reason, they play team basketball, that's it. So all of you out there, just ignore guys like kobe, carmelo, lebron etc. who are just nothing but fancy and ball hugging. No one can win basketball alone (only if its one on one basketball). Team always win basketball.

Champion! :) Woohoow! Defense can indeed win you a game!

Guys,
Here are the status of the two players. Both of them has serious injuries and it may not allowed them to play for the national but hopefully, they can. Hontiveros has a serious "ingrown" in his right toe and might require surgery. After surgery, he might need to rehabilitate it and need a physical therapy just to bring back the normal function of his toe. Seagle has a serious mosquito bites in his butt and he always scratch every five seconds which make him gun shy. He can't shoot because he rather scratch it again to ease the itchyness. That's very serious guys, hopefully, it can be resolved so we might have a chance to beat NU Bulldogs this coming UAAP.

Pareng Dahanie,
Sbi nga ni Coach Chot (#31.1 2007-06-22 09:02), mukhang malabo makalaro sina Danny and dondon but let's hope for the best. With your suggestion regarding yap and ritualo, I prefer ritualo becoz he's a pure shooter and yap is just an actor nowadays, he cannot play good basketball now. With regards to William, Menk and Hatfield, they are our secret weapon! We will only used them in the actual competition and our opponent will be surprise. This is the plan of coach chot. He's really clever, right?

Defense wins championships!! offense can win you some games, but you can never be a champion. Just like Phoenix, they can win ballgames but they cant beat greg popovich's defense the only person can challenge greg as a coach is phil jackson and jerry sloan, coz they are war veterans in basketball coaching..not mike d antoini!! i just hate phoenix thats all!! haha!!
