Friday, January 16. 2009The perils of blogging
I’ve been thinking long and hard lately about blogging and how, at least in my case, it fosters intellectual indolence, which can be detrimental to a journalist like me.
Blogging is a great invention. Used properly, it complements journalism in ways that are not possible five or 10 years ago. More importantly, blogging democratizes expression and has proved crucial in the struggle by many citizens in repressive regimes to be heard. Since the Pangandaman case exploded, however, I have been entertaining the idea that maybe blogging is best left to people who have advocacies and causes but are shut out by the mainstream media. Or those who have interesting things to say about themselves, or what they had for dinner last night, or why The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a charming but tedious movie. Blogging was not invented for journalists and, as such, may not be an ideal medium for them. (Indeed, some even believe that blogging was invented precisely to get around the conventions of mainstream journalism.) It is clear to me now that journalism is one hat, blogging is another. And a journalist, in my view, cannot wear two hats -- especially those that, because of their respective nature, simply don’t fit if worn at the same time. I would be lying if I said that this self-examination was not prompted by the so-called “golf war” and how it played out, i.e. that the Valley Golf and Country Club management had practically exonerated the Pangandamans, who have been vilified on the Internet left and right. Although I still stand by what I wrote in this space – that the Pangandamans behaved like warlords and that Nasser Pangandaman Sr. did not deserve his appointment as peace negotiator because, hell, he couldn’t even stop a simple misunderstanding from escalating into a brawl – I realized that it was an incomplete assessment of what had happened. The problem lies, of course, with the fact that I, like the gazillion of bloggers out there, relied solely on the word of Bambee dela Paz, whose account of the incident was, as can be expected, biased. Although she may not know it at the time, her post was a classic example of propaganda warfare: if you want to control the agenda, put out your version first, as quickly as you can. The more heartbreaking the tale, the better. From a propaganda standpoint, the odds were stacked against the Pangandamans. They not only belonged to a political class that is easy to pigeonhole and excoriate, they behaved precisely as people who belong to that class would behave. Plus, they apparently do not blog. Bambee dela Paz certainly was well within her right to publish that post. And I’m glad that she did, because, as I’ve mentioned in an earlier post, blogging can be a tool to correct an injustice. She merely used a medium that allowed her – no, expected her -- to do exactly what she did. The same can be said of the other bloggers, whose outrage, as can be gleaned from their posts and the comments sections of their blogs, quickly turned into the digital equivalent of a mass lynching, which is fine, because the medium allows that. I was the guy in red shirt with the baseball bat shouting “Let’s kill these bastards!” As a journalist, I should have known better. In itself, the brawl at the Valley Golf was a fascinating story, with an even fascinating backstory from each side: a family of powerful politicians from a region known for their goons and guns versus a family of golfers trying to make it big in golf. I felt strongly about what had happened (at least according to Bambee) but instead of investigating the incident and get to the truth of it, as any journalist ought to do and as I have done in other stories in the past, I put on my other hat and merely blogged about it. Did I attempt to get the side of the Pangandamans? I did not. Did I investigate whether what Bambee dela Paz wrote was accurate or truthful? I did not. My outrage had been vented, so why bother? It was so goddamn easy. Blogging about the golf brawl allowed me to let off steam. What that did was give me visceral pleasure – I hate arrogant pricks, particularly arrogant pricks who hold office -- but it waylaid my instincts as a journalist. Let me make it clear that I am not blaming blogging per se, just as I am not faulting radio for the rise of so-called shock jocks or newspapers for those pseudo-journalists, called hao-shiao, who extort money from politicians and corrupt customs officials. What happened in my case is more the result of a lack of discipline to fight the temptation – strongest among bloggers -- to shoot first and ask questions later. That baseball bat was so conveniently within reach. But it must be said that, because of its nature, blogging is such that it is very easy to be lazy, irresponsible and careless with it. dear mr. conde:
i must congratulate you for that fine piece of realization, that you have joined two disciplines, journalism and blogging. which, as you have said, made you one sided and maybe to subjective, maybe your anti-moro bias came out. which as a journalist, you should not done. i may have torched (me as invictus and invader or...) you to the ground because of the way you treated the bambee blog as a 'gospel truth.' now the true truth about her blog has come out. I really wish you well for that coming to terms with your blog on bambee dela paz. i forgive, you don't have to seek apology from me. really, i must confess, i am also a journalist, that was why i 'excoriated' you in my posts (like don't drown in your ....s). remember that. you know what failed vice presidentiable sarah palin said about bloggers: 'bored, anonymous, pathetic bloggers who lie.' which i think is very aply said. bloggers, in some extent, are failed journalists who go nuts, shouting to the world at the top of their voice through the internet. they are failed journalists (not all of them, though), who cannot be journalists because they cannot separate their egos from their journalistic etiquette. as journalists, blogger can't really thrive, because they don't follow rules. anyway, thanks, mr. conde, for your blog today. yes, i think it is wise of you to not join your hat as journalist and a blogger. it is like oil and water. we maybe rub elbows in some coverage. my advantage is i know you; you don't know me yet. or so. so, congrats to you and your realization. regards. "Anonymous" before you try to correct someone else's english, you should review your own english grammar... Here are your grammatical errors you hypocrite! 1."sound like a kid who HAPPENED to get hold?!" 2. "and decided to TYPED?!" you're sentences does NOT make any sense.. you wrote two verbs in PAST tense forms with "TO"... so mr anonymous hypocrite i suggest that you also try to get some professional help.. okay?
hi caloy. this is a great piece.
congratulations for having the courage to admit your mistakes. not everyone does that. I want to share with you this letter I sent to the DepEd and PSHS:
I'm a stay-at-home mom of two based in the US. I always monitor news from our beloved motherland and I'd like to react to this article: http://www.gmanews.tv/story/144604/DepEd-blocks-suspension-of-4-students-over-blog I'm also a blogger. I always read news and react to social issues by writing to our leaders and whoever is concerned about the issue. I keep some of these letters in my webpage. There is a new trend in social communication. Please have some time to read these: http://almamather.multiply.com/journal/item/26/NEW_TREND_IN_SOCIAL_COMMUNICATION_ (The 1st part of this blog talks about innovations creating a "world where technology helps solve the toughest problems..."): http://almamather.multiply.com/journal/item/23/Let_Freedom_Roll_!!!! "Level-Headed Approach"! Just like how US President Obama reacted to his economic critics: "Show me your ideas!". As what I've said in my introduction: "Imagine if each one, every person, would contribute to finding solutions for every social problem instead of whining, criticizing, gossiping, blaming, bullying, bickering, politicking, and condemning....lives of people would be spared....anger, wars, bloodshed won't have a place in this world and we will all arrive in a better place!" Educators, leaders, media people (and everybody) have a big responsibility in realizing this "Level-Headed Approach" in expressing ideas and opinions. Hope for the best for all! P.S. If you have extra time, please read my other blogs: http://almamather.multiply.com/journal/item/25/A_Cry_for_Help_>"A Cry for Help!" http://almamather.multiply.com/journal/item/2/Nasaan_Ang_Bagong_Rizal Peace to all!!! We, the listeners and viewers tend to digest swiftly "media facts" and we tend to react fast on issues involving oppressions of the poor and weak.
Lucky for me, though I reacted on Pangandaman's actuations, I also consider my self's assessment on Mr. dela Paz's "character" through his TV interviews. And my opinion as I've said on this previous blog is that "mukha din kasi syang palaban". Besides the fact that this is a fight of "elite personalities". At saka yung napasama sa away ang 14 years old nyang kapatid (pero sabi ng isang ka-blog natin d2..14 years old is not innocent anymore, may punto sya don). Lessons: 1. To the media in general-review your "facts" 2. To Mr dela Paz-behave! 3. Understand, state the pros and cons, then react.
We should always think of the future.
MARAMING SALAMAT po!!! I really admire your courage to admit at one piece your inability to investigate the Pangandaman case.
This is one mature action that only a few Professional Journalists can manage to do. May the force be with you according to Jedi way. I hope people are getting responsible for their actions especially if you are in media. Media played a major role in shaping people's mind and actions.
I held you Mr. Conde as one of the irresponsible media people. With your irresponsibility, laziness or probably bias action, bad languages, outrage, hatred and other negative feelings and actions were already expressed and planted in people's minds. And that's all? Just simply say that you did not investigate and get the other side? With the recent golf brawl, who is the real winner in the end? IT WAS YOU MR. CONDE BECAUSE YOU HAVE CREATED AWARENESS OF YOURSELF TO THE BLOGGERS. Sad thing is you did it in a bad way, a selfish and very irresponsible action. |
