In the last six months, the market for cheap ultraportable laptops have been dominated by the Asus Eee PC. It was a great move by the Taiwan manufacturer and became an instant hit primarily because of the retail price. Before that, the smaller the laptop the pricier it becomes.
The Asus Eee PC 4G was originally pegged at $199 but ended up being sold for Php19,000+ in the Philippines – yet people kept on buying them like hot cakes. This unit runs on an Intel Celeron 900MHz, has a 7-inch screen, 512 MB memory, and 4GB of storage but the built-in wifi, webcam as well as its light weight makes it a usable and affordable laptop. The market response to this new gadget may have prompted other manufacturers to join into the fray. There are dozens of new ultra mobile PCs (UMPC) coming out this year – from MSI to ECS, HP, Gigabyte and Astone. Intel even has a partnership with Neo to turn the Classmate PC commercially and call it Neo Explore X1. I looked at 4 sub-Php20k UMPCs and compare them side by side to see which one gets you the best bang for your buck. In the chart below, we have the Asus Eee PC 4G, the Neo Explore X1, Astone UMPC and Deep Blue H1. ![]() All four models mentioned above are currently available in the Philippines, has a 7-inch screen and costs under Php20,000. Take note though that they don’t come with an optical drive (CD/DVD) so you need to purchase it separately. We compare all aspects of the laptop – from the CPU to the on-board memory to the storage capacity, among others. A quick inspection of the specs among the four will give you an impression that it’s a toss-up between the Astone UMPC and the Deep Blue H1 with only a Php2,000 price difference between the two. If you fancy a touch screen and stylus, then Astone might be the choice for a couple thousand bucks more. It’s also lighter than the Deep Blue H1. The bet though would go on the side of the latter because it’s more affordable. If you still decide to go with the more popular Asus Eee PC, you might want to check out my earlier review about it here. As more and more players enter the market, they’ll offer better features and the prices go down further. And we all love healthy competition, don’t we? - Abe Olandres / YugaTech Trackbacks

Doy milagro nag comment ka, its ok to buy as long as you have money
For that price, it is a bargain to people who only wants to surf for friendster and for modders who want to convert it to a one of a kind ultraportable. I hate to say but this is a toy for kids not for grown ups.
not much you can do with those specs they have. yeah Fernando may be right, looks like a toy
Asus actually sold 1 Million Eee PCs in the first 5 months. It has now reached 3.5 Million units as per this GMA News story.
Around 5 years ago, most laptops were running around these specs. And I don't think kids know how to use Linux OS. The best way to market this is to bundle this with tutorials for serious usage.
useless junk...
"Around 5 years ago, most laptops were running around these specs."
Yeah, true most kids maybe don't know how to use Linux, but the point is the specs they have were the ancient technology in computers. computers grow old as fast as a banana does. a 2 yr old computer is considered a grandpa, outdated. the units here, they may be cheap but for a few bucks more why settle for less? hi to everyone! maybe you can help me guys in choosing which computer to buy.we have computer at home but i bought it on the year 2003 and my son wants to have a new computer.i have no idea about computers,i need help! pls.tell me also where to buy.thanks!
Buy a MC.. is the number one recommendation
best ever computer.. you can use it for conference excellent computer.. just talking to my friend in Mexican and i can see him on the web I am in California and he is in Mechegan. and my other friend is in Sanfrancisco. we 3 people seing each other while talking. chao Zacker.. Thanks..i tell my son about your recommendation.here in Israel computers, cellphones etc.are so expensive.i'm just using my palm top in communicating my kids.thanks again Zacker i appreaciate the information.
Zacker...
i think you do not have a spell check in your PC because you miss spell the word Michigan. rainz
you got spell checked too; Zacker... i think you do not have a spell check in your PC because you miss spell the word Michigan. its misspell or misspelled, not miss spell Not practical. Here in KSA there's Troy: 1.86GHz celeron, 512MB DDR2, 80GB HDD, Bluetooth, Camera, DVD-rom, 14.1 in screen.
Sacrificing power and usability for size and portability?
So not worth it. guys remember this is not made to perform task like the desktops... the target market for these portable pc are the kids... still you can use them to surf, email, word process, blogs, chat etc... no photoshop, graphics or other heavy task. there are lots of ways to maximize these little pc.... and soon you'll be seeing more hydrid pc's that based on SSD
How big is the video RAM for each of these LT? If it's 128MB and up, go BUY it! If not, then dont!!! Your kids will not enjoy online games with these units.
Toys for kids..ya toys for kids if you think of its physical aspect.pero kung titingan nyo yung comfortability ng mga yan eh..pasok sa banga!!from wireless connection to and processor speed hindi na masama kung gagamitin mo on its prefered usage..sasabihin mong pang bata..bata lang ang nagiisip na pang bata ito coz the main use of laptop is for mobility hinde po pang server yan hehehe.. mahal pa nga s 20K a i agree lets wait for it na magmura na parang cellphone...gusto nyo ng laptop na pang matanda..checkout mine..its a lenovo t60
your comment not does fit to the ideal purpose of the objectives of the new inventions. Read the topic wisely FYI.
College graduate of software engineer: di mo ba alam na graduate ako ng college?
Technical Networking graduate: Ganon po pb? Alam nyo po ba ang CISCO Router, PING, DHCP, PPP, HUB o ang Cloud? ano po ang meaning at how its operate? College graduate of software engineer: ahh.. eehhh.. a basta graduate ako!!! Graduate of IT Management: Boy's get back to work the system is down!
isa lang po masasabi ko it depends naman po sa user yan kung your a business man kailangan mo talaga yan pero kung ordinary na mangagagwa ka lang at dimo pa kayang bumili ng ganyang kamamahal talagang magtitiis ka muna magrent, ng pc. Its good to have your own pero matitiis mo ba na tipirin ang sarili mo sa pagkain! tama be practical kung meron ka at alam mo na kayo mo go on pero magisip ka muna before doing such decision.
Kung mura sa pilipinas, mas mura d2 sa amerika, gaya ko na ofw dito sa barko nmin lahat ng cabin mrn internet connection so halos lahat kmi onboard mrn laptops para communication sa pamilya..dont hesitate to buy even it was expensive or cheap ang importante masaya ka..sabi ni mrs carpio sa magsaysay maritime corp."PDOS" "Communication is a vital part of relationship, kaya marami natorotot ang asawa dhil d man lng mk text or tawag sa pamilya"kaya mg internet mga kabayan....
Cgro ung iba at first mattempt dhil mura ung price, akala mu nkamura k pro within a year p ung specs nun mga lap n yan is sobrang baba na tlga kya di k dn tlga nkamura bukod p dun ung mga materials na ginamit jan is low quality, after few months di na gnun kgnda ung appearance nyan.So sa iba if you want to buy a good lap cgro mainam na gas2san mu tlga kesa buy ka ng mura eventually maiicip mu n talo k dn.
Pang-internet lang ang UMPC. Saka magaan at madaling dalin. Gusto ko din bumili kaso dapat ang OS eh Windows XP Home man lang o mas ok kung XP Prof. kasi yung Linux not user-friendly, xp starter naman limited functions.
For everyone's info, D2 sa Singapore, di pansin yang eePC, last time na nag-sale yan, arnd S$300, mga PHP 9,000.
I work for a US Base, recently I sold a Toshiba laptop 2G ram, AMD 64x2 @1.8ghz.Turion, 160Gb.hard drive, wi-fi, webcam, memory card reader w/ Vista home premium for $547!! Can you beat that!!! Kahit pangbata lang you're throwing away your money since they would only be using it for games! which I doubt the video card can hold especially the games nowadays. It was really meant for those impoverished people who can hardly afford a computer meaning third world countries. How noble their intentions are still boils down to - business. Sayang, if they stuck to $200 baka sakali pa.

Those who have commented bitterly against the portable laptops either don't have the money or are too conservative to accept the fact that we are living in a computer world. The manufacturers are making the products cheaper, what more could you ask for? HP and the other computer companies won't put their names on the line if their products are unreliable or defective. Don't stop the inevitable. Computer is learning. And learning is the key for progress.
some of us are not saying na d tayo sumunod sa agos ng pag unlad, tama ka were living on the computer age... pro watz d sense kong, LOP TOP ang libangan, DAING naman ang ulam... unless my ANDALUSH ka...(rich ka)
PEACE TAYO!!! In response to Randz "Those who have commented bitterly against the portable laptops either don't have the money or are too conservative to accept the fact that we are living in a computer world", can we suggest you reconstruct your sentence? Careful. The sentence does not apply to everyone. I know a lot of people in this list have resources but don't want to buy.
I do not have the propensity to buy these subnotebooks though I have cash. If I'm not in the computer world, it does not explain why I can dig any computer no matter if it's a mac, windows, linux or solaris I don't want to buy subnotebook. It doesn't fit my needs. I have a high end desktop for heavy applications, a laptop for bringing work to another location and a mobile phone capable of 3G internet browsing, YM and Google Maps. Subnotebooks does not fill a niche on people like me. I don't write documents on a bus or while driving. I don't need to run to the nearest starbucks coffee to get an elusive WIFI signal and "flaunt" my devices. Peace! Cheap laptops were ok but most of the people who wants to buy were of course aware of the quality and reliability of an item. Before we buy think of the price nearly meet your requirements and maybe you may just add up a 50-100 dollars and you get the best.
I go with the Deep Blue H1 for portability. I will sell my Acer laptop because its so heavy.
as a toy, itoy walang kwenta
even if you buy it for personal use wala pa ring kwenta... masasayang lang ang pera mo Well, for a very simple computer function that's ideal, but you might suffer from RSI by always using it, its too tiny, for travellers thats good for them, but for SOHO small office & home office use, isn't practical. anyway that's entirely within the discretion of the buyer.
IF YOU REALLY NEED LOPTOP BUY A RELIABLE ONE LOPTOP IS FOR PROFESIONALS FOR NON PRO' NO NEED', ACTUALLY I AM USING TOSHIBA CORE 2 DUO WINDOWS VISTA 2.0- 2.0 160 GIGA MEMMORY..I AM STILL NOT SATISFIED'SPECIALLY FOR 3D'WORKS'BELIEVE ME DONT BUY SPECS 4 GIG' FOR THAT PRICE, BUY A "PSP"PLAYSTAION MUCH BETTER' AND GIVE YOU MORE SATISFACTION' HE HE HE'
Some people don't see the point of having a UMPC.
I have 2 laptops, a Neo (not the Explore X1) and a Dell Inspiron 1520 with a Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz processor, 2 GB RAM, 350 GB HD, NVIDIA 8600 video card, WIFI, webcam, etc. I can't bring either with me because they're too heavy. I have 3 desktops, ranging from an old 1.7 GHZ PEntium 4 to a 3.6 GHz Pentium D. ANd I'll be getting another desktop with a COre 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz processor, 2 GB ram, Nvidia 8600 or 8800 video card, etc. I access the internet with a DSL account. And I'm still going to buy an Asus EEEPC 900 (the Linux version with 20GB ram) because I need a computer that I can bring around for accessing the internet, using my 3G/HSDPA capable cellphone as a modem... without having to break my back lugging the thing around. I used to do that with the Neo but it was still too heavy. I intend to upgrade the memory to 2GB RAM to speed it up. I can also expand the 'Hard Disk' capability by using a 16GB USB drive and an 8 GB SD card, both of which I already have, for a total capacity of 44 GB (or more if I stick another USB drive in another USB slot or into a USB hub). I've seen people play Doom 3, Counter Strike and Oblivion on the EEEPC 701. I've also seen someone put a MAC Tiger OS on the 701. (I don't like the MAC OS though... pretty limited) But I wouldn't recommend the Deep Blue H1 or the Astone (although the Touch Screen is tempting) because these use VIA processors, which only run at half the speed of the Celeron 900 Mhz Processors. (I'm also not too entusiastic about having a real Hard Drive on a UMPC because this compromises the durability of the unit.) Also, the NEO EXPLORE X1 can only accomodate up to 1 GB RAM. I already asked at Neo. (Although I did see it being sold at P16,000.) By the way, I saw the eeePC 701 being sold at P16,000. The 8 GB 701 sells for P21,000. I'd go for the EEEPC 900 when it comes out, but only if they price it reasonably. Otherwise, I'd wait awhile until someone comes out with a lower price, like what happened to the 701- it's normally priced at P19,800, but you can get it at between P16,000 to P17,500 depending on where you look and who you ask. These UMPC's are definitely not just toys for kids. I agree! That is why it is an Ultra-Mobile PC.
I lug a laptop around as a mobile employee, and when you're forced to commute, it becomes such a hassle. Add to that the fact that commuting with a laptop makes you attractive to robbers! Also means less/lighter bags when you're a girl. useless cheap laptops. it's an incomplete accessories.
That is a good sign for the very affordable gadget in transmitting information and communication for the near future.
Time will come, everyone can buy his own laptop even ordinary workers. Laptops will surely help us a lot in our daily tasks. But aside from its advantageous, there maybe negative effects if laptops will become an ordinary gadget like the cellphone. Come to think of it of possible effects, an example is this.... Our Children or grandchildren will no longer use notebooks, neither use pencil to write. Books will be obsulete to use. Anything more from you to share? It will saves the trees from being cutted only to be used for making papers, pencils, cartons or whatever.
I think our scientist should invent new technology that will save our mother earth instead of polluting it.Saving the trees is one vital moves to protect our environment from total damages. Buying laptop to stored data or transfered data into dvd or disk can saves a lot of tress. I think modern technologies will help mother earth to lived more longer if disposing those highly radioactived materials are recycled properly. .. . . you think of it. (peace).
expect your laptop is not a desktop.
it depends how you use it and when you use it, Nobody knows when and how long the life of your laptop parts last. I want to buy a Laptop, Made by a Filipino company, Financed, Engineered, programmed, designed and assembled by a filipino brains.
PEACE TAYO:-)
I think it is wrong to define this devices as UMPC's (Ultraportable Mobile PC's) as these devices falls to subnotebook category.
To those who are buying, ASUS, be forewarned that available software to install might not be working with this device as the equipment inside is a trimmed down version of a real laptop. Xandros is indeed an excellent Operating System but you need to face these considerations before jumping to Linux from a Microsoft PC. For an ordinary everyday PC applications, think of these before buying a Linux Computer 1. Yahoo!Messenger can be ported but you cannot do video calls. I think it does not run yahoo webcall also. 2. Adobe Flash (e.g. youtube) can run but Shockwave flash cannot run natively (e.g. miniclip.com) 3. Installing Java Runtime Environment (e.g. Forex.com online trading) is a big mess to Linux Beginners. Runaround can be: 1. Skype instead of Yahoo for webcalls 2. Live without Shockwave Flash. Who needs it anyway? 3. For installing Java Runtime Environment (sorry I can only help Ubunty 7.04 users) just give me a beep @ renzo24@gmail.com Rest of ordinary Microsoft application runs, but if you can't live without this applications, think twice before buying. Hey, do you have any computer for disposal, in case you have one and being persuaded by the marketing know-how of the author please just buzz me, and i'm very much willing to accpet it. Its alright with me even if its an old models as long as its still working.
I heard that mr. yuga earned a lot for just writing about techi-info... wow great talent... and these patron of him asking him to write something about their products. And for pay-offs, the company probably adding some amount to their items that we are about to buy or bought. meaning, technically we, the consumers are actually the ones paying the talents, writers, (e.g. yuga) who creates for these computer companies. Its ok to buy as as our country will benefit from this bunch of foreign manufacturers.
Meron akong dell xps its very good and ive bought it cheap too here in dubai.good!
"The Battle for Cheap Ultraportable Laptops" benefits new end users. However disadvantageous to those who bought one a year or few years back for an average cost of $1,000. This will be hard to dispose of for at least half of its original price. Instead of buying a $500 second hand laptop, the would be buyer will of course settle for a brand new one with better specifications. Laptop's "PORTABILITY" seems not a reason enough for "AVERAGE" users.
well i have read some comments about the lap top like ASUS i would like to add mine too.the main target for these gadgets is like a second computer. first 2 lbs. only, compared to 6 lbs to a normal laptop.2nd. the prize half price for the normal one. so make your own decission.........
